  • This clip combined her 1st attempt of the free skate, her re-skate, and the post-skate interview.
Hamar, NORWAY - 1994 Winter Olympic Games, Figure Skating, Ladies' Free Skate - Tonya Harding of the United States had skate lace problems when her original laces broke during the 6-minute warm up. Her team did not have a proper spare lace for this kind of an emergency and ended up using whatever they could find, which apparently was not long enough for her to properly tie her skate properly. In order to avoid being disqualified for not getting into her starting position within the 2 minutes after they announced her name, she would rush out ill prepared and started her routine. She would bail out of the opening triple Lutz and then go to the referee to show the referee her problem. She would be allowed time to fix her lace problem. It seemed that Tonya expected only a small break to change her lace and then go back out to skate, but the announcer came on and announced that she would be allowed to re-skate at the end of the group and immediately called out Josee Chouinard of Canada to skate.
Tonya would have her re-skate and would perform well enough to place 6th in the Free Skate. She would move up from 10th Place to finish in 8th Place overall. An interview with Tonya follows.

They boo at the beginning but they can't at the end. This is such an incredible performance under such horrendous circumstances. What a brave kid.

I like how the movie recreates the moments exactly how it happened..

I still feel like, even today, nobody jumps like Tanya Harding. Either she was way ahead of her time or people simple did not look to her for inspiration on how to jump textbook perfectly. Young skaters today, look to her. Forget about her past. You would do well.

Choosing Jurassic Park as her theme music? How appropriate and fitting! Jurassic Park equates terror, panic, fear, and pain. Yep, pretty much sums up that year in figure skating.

She would have had it easy nowadays, she could've been more herself and skated wonderfully.

Over-rotated on the triple loop. Failed to do the triple axle and instead did a single axle. Hit the triple Lutz. Obvious fatigue in the total program. Tonya was headed for greatness at one time. Was one of the most athletic ice skaters ever. Her skating weakness was in artistry. Her personal life was in utter chaos. She added to her own personal disasters as we sometimes all do. Her husband was a self-absorbed, self-interested character who was so toxic to Tonya's career and personal life. She was so young. Not making phony allowances for her but there were terrible immoral and criminal forces in her life that churned her into the midst of continual storms and upheavals. Yes, she played a role in most of it. But Tonya was never beyond redemption. She deserved the chance to skate again. Sad she was never given that chance. Tonya comes across hard and rough in her demeanor and presentation but I don't believe that facade. It is a defense mechanism to protect her mind and heart. She had been harmed so much in her growing up years and then in her first marriage. She has tears and fears just like most of us do. We all need to be loved and forgiven; and also given credit for our accomplishments and healthy encouragement to keep achieving. And when we fail and fall to be assured we are not loved any less because of our failures.

I learned one thing from her. No matter how hard it is, no matter how many obstacles there are never give up. Even when her dreams were smashed she kept on shining. She's an inspiration

something always happened to tonya. she always looked dazzling and she would be at least america's best skater period if her situation was just a little better.

I always rooted for her because she was such an under dog. But looking back after all these years you can see all her struggles finally bringing her to an end. She had a rough life without all the advantages that other skaters had. She basically came from the hood and worked her way up. I'll always remember Lillehammer and Tanya Harding.

Tonya nailed that triple. Good for her! I saw this performance on television in 1994, solid recovery after that lace issue. Good on you TH!

Her jumps were incredible here! Even when she wasn’t at her best, she was still pretty good.

I havent watched this video in a long time. Hard to believe this was 26 years ago. In spite of all the drama around the whole Nancy/Tanya thing and then all the drama around the first attempt at the free skate shown here, there is no denying 2 things: Tanya Harding was THE best jumper in the world in this sport in 1994, and the second attempt at the free skate was a super gutsy performance. No big surprise she bailed out of the triple axel. Super hard jump, especially under these conditions and a super hard landing when she still did not have 100% confidence in the stability of that skate. Most people would not have attempted that at that moment early in the program. But aside from that, her jumps are awesome in this program, she landed all of them abeit a little over-rotated on a couple of them and kind of 2 footed the triple loop...but still landed 4 triples in this program. Moves in the field and footwork were not terrible, solid spins...no doubt a terrific performance under VERY difficult circumstances. Amazing skater. The skater who got screwed the most in this whole episode was Josee Chouinard from Canada. She was Canada's national champion in 94 and a really terrific skater. To get called to the ice early during a competition is a very difficult situation. In reality, I have never seen it happen at any level of competition. The order is the order and you prepare with your coach based on that order and based on when you will be on the ice. To do it at the Olympics was a bad call by the referee in my opinion. Skating is probably 40% physical and 60% mental. The early call had to totally kill the mental game. If I were a judge, I do think I would have given Tanya a set amount of time to fix her equipment but I would not have changed the order.
