She was incredibly talented and overcame a lot of disadvantages. She wasn’t from a typical background. Training to be good enough to compete at that level is expensive and she over came her lower class background. One of the best jumpers in the sport, though the commentary is spot on, she was a better athlete then an artist.

Tonya will always be the young woman who defied the odds. Grew up poor, natural ability, wasn't always the best, but fought hard. And she made her way to the Olympics. Some people will only focus on the bad, but she was an amazing inspiration.

Just goes to show you all how powerful of a skater Tonya really is to snap her skate laces!!!! Accept this.. seems they would have made laces with metal in them just for this Olympic skater..

Roland Cliffhanger I don’t think Lasna34 was being judgmental, she was just telling it like it is. Tanya didn’t come from a rich, wholesome family like all the other skaters at the time. She came from a poor, abusive family and everyone knew it and the judges didn’t like her for it because she didn’t fit it. They didn’t want her to be the face of women’s ice skating. They wanted some proper rich girl.

CNoelle Nancy Kerrigan wasn't a proper rich girl though. Her father worked two jobs to pay for her ice skating and they were a middle class family. But she had the face and look the skating association wanted. They definitely didn't think Tonya fit that model at all. Tonya came from a really broken home. Honestly, this could have been a rags to riches story for her but the US figure skating folks and judges were a bunch of snobs.

It's a shame she couldn't hit that same triple lutz in the technical program. She looked so solid at Nationals, even landing the triple axle in practice sessions. She could have been so much more with the right people behind her, and allowing herself to be the athlete she wanted to be.

Tanya was late to arrive in Norway, which impacted her ability to adjust to the elevation and the time change. She didn't attend her practices even in the US ahead of the competition she was also a heavy smoker with asthma. She also chose to skate to zztop, in a sport where most athletes perform to classical music. Tanya did a heck of alot to sabotaged herself.

@@jessicamcwilliams3346 she executed what others couldn't, where's the personal issue at? In terms of having an ounce of brains you understand she was the best because she did what no one could. What music she skated to and how they want her to behave is the problem of skating and other sports depending on grading performance. The problem of America is that while being THE most murderous nation in the world, you keep pushing the narrative of being a holly saint, the hero, the unmistakable etc. therefore your athletes have to be angels and you go on to accuse other Olympic nations of doping, while your athletes are ful through the roof, and even have the audacity to ban them from olympic sports. You'd probably rott if you can't to push the good vs evil story arc. The constant struggle to keep your lies a float to preserve the image. Tonya wasn't good image right? Same was with Ken Miles, Wilt Chamberlain, Bobby Fischer, McEnroe, Tyson, many more. Not everything in life revolves around stories.

This is actually a pretty solid performance. Her opening triple cannot be matched. She just was suffering a lot of mental stress because of the media and backlash she was getting due to the Kerrigan scandal. She deserved better marks then this though- she didn't fall at all. Two footed a bit on one landing, but pretty much a clean skate.
If only she had delivered at the 1992 Olympics. If she had skated the way she did at the 1991 US Championships, she would have taken the gold. 1992 was the first time that even the Gold Medalist (Yamaguchi) fell during their program. If Harding had landed that triple axel, given more gusto to her energy on the ice, she would have landed a medal. It's so sad that after all that hard work, she turned in two lackluster performances in Albertsville. In 1994 I think she actually skated better, but the competition was far more fierce.

  • @bettybleu12
    @bettybleu12 5 років тому +7

Say what you will like the others but she was the first American to do a triple axel and I remember it live. It’s remarkable what she achieved given her background and upbringing. And say what you will about her mother, but with their social status, to fund and supprt an incredibly expensive sport and have her natural athletic talent is to be admired, just for technical merit and having the media against her. But I do remember Dick Byron and Peggy Fleming commentating some good words about her...um that is before that knee thing

Absolutely deserved to medal imo. Watching Tonya is always electrifying and she performed well after having a meltdown. If you watch I Tonya the narrative is that she was looked down on by judges and the figure skating establishment due to her poor upbringing, lack of expensive costumes and delicate gracefulness etc. She broke the mold and didn’t fit in with the high brow world of figure skating. She was certainly a rebel, for better or for worse. Incredible skater to this day.

"While preparing for Lillehammer, Tonya found herself not only under
investigation by the FBI, but also the subject of two disciplinary
proceedings by the sports authorities. The USFSA gave her 30 days to
respond to the charges. In addition to the USFSA action, The USOC
planned to hold its own Hearing in Norway on the 15th of February to
discuss booting Tonya off the team. Tonya's coach, Diane Rawlinson said
in an affidavit, "To require Ms. Harding to appear at hearings several
hours from the site of her training within 10 days" of her first

This was a lovely routine!!! I don't quite understand why people are going after her for being allowed to skate last when that was a judgment call buy the judges not Tanya, if anything be mad at them not her. It's not Tanya's fault her lace broke, if her boot didn't feel right she could have injured herself and I'm hoping while some may not care for her the last thing people would want would be to wish her harm.

The more I view this program, the more impressed I am with it. True, it isn't a gold-medal winning performance, but it's impressive. Oksana Baiul deserved the gold and I loved her program, but I think Baiul's long program overdid it a bit on the cutsey element. Tonya isn't the dainty little ice princess, but I always thought her artistry was far better than she was given credit for. I have fallen in love with the Jurassic Park theme song ever since I saw this performance. As you can tell, I'm on Tonya's side. OK, she had a rough around the edges personality, but that didn't mean she was a thug who would have someone maimed. What a shame that someone this talented couldn't make money from her skating after age 23.

One great triple Lutz doesn't make for a top score by itself. She missed two of her triple jumps (turning one into a single and two-foot-landing the other), and she ran out of gas toward the end so her footwork was sluggish. I couldn't "boo" the judging on this. I think it was fair.

I really like the music, especially for her. I think it would have been better if she had attempted the triple axel. This program shows that she was prepared to contend for a medal at this Games. She needed a clean short and a successful 3-axel in the long, and she could have captured the bronze.

I think you can call that a "delayed" triple lutz. Textbook perfect triple lutz. Incredibly gorgeous triple lutz I have ever seen.

I understand it’s a competition but if she had an issue with her skate/laces then surely that’s a huge safety hazard. I don’t understand why people boo-ed. One wrong landing and that could have been her ankle completely gone and her career over. She skated very well despite the mishap beforehand and for that she should be applauded :)

Even ignoring the whole controversy around Tonya Harding I see visibly why Nancy Kerrigan won.
Nancy had incredible grace and finesse in her skating and her overall style was very patient and beautiful.
Tonya while she has grace chose a bad song, seemed repetitive and simplistic in comparison. She focused on spins in the air, skating backwards and waving her arms around which sort of lowered the quality of her performance. It also seemed a tad......improvised.
    Overall glad Nancy won.

Hamilton could afford to be snarky. He benefitted from the sport in ways Bonaly, Bobek, and Harding werent allowed to. Dick Button was also snide at times, but far more professional. Also Button was a double gold medalist while a student at Harvard back in the forties. Scotty has also whined that the Tonya scandal ruined the sport financially. Now the only babes winning gold medals are Russian adolescents.

Tonya's biggest problem was that she came from the wrong side of the tracks. Look at Nicole Bobek, similar background, similar outcome. In skating it is a crime to be poor. She wasn't supposed to have been there. How dare she have made as far as she did, to the Olympics, no less.

Skaters like Nancy or Nicole Bobek's worst performances were spent with their asses on the ice multiple times, falling on spin combinations . She didn't have one fall here(probably why she avoided 3axel attempt) Pulled off some big triples, great spins. This performance wasn't as bad as it's been said to be

When you don't have the advantages other people do, things spiral. Of course she made poor choices, but she did such powerful jumps she broke boots and laces. And Scott Hamilton knows that while it doesn't happen very much at this level, it does happen and things would have been very different if she had been able to get a sponsor and some friggin' support from the Figure Skating Association (instead of them dissing her pink outfit and to stay married to nutjob Jeff).

very good skate. If this program had reached it's full potential (from what i've seen she was training) it could've been the most technically packed program in that season in the ladies. the jumps she did here plus the triple axel and the days prior to the competition she was practicing 3Lo + 3Lo in practices and landing triple axels. a program with a triple axel and a triple loop triple loop combination would've been insane at the time and would still give competition to most ladies right now.
