CNoelle Nancy Kerrigan wasn't a proper rich girl though. Her father worked two jobs to pay for her ice skating and they were a middle class family. But she had the face and look the skating association wanted. They definitely didn't think Tonya fit that model at all. Tonya came from a really broken home. She was one of the best jumpers ever, and we see signs of that here (though not everything she was capable of). But she just didn't skate with the same enthusiasm that she had earlier in her career. Very cautious and tentative.
It's a shame she couldn't hit that same triple lutz in the technical program. She looked so solid at Nationals, even landing the triple axle in practice sessions. She could have been so much more with the right people behind her, and allowing herself to be the athlete she wanted to be.
Tanya was late to arrive in Norway, which impacted her ability to adjust to the elevation and the time change. She didn't attend her practices even in the US ahead of the competition she was also a heavy smoker with asthma. @@jessicamcwilliams3346 I feel like she did better when she skated to Sleeping Bag and Europa (91-92 season) Everything went downhill after she changed her SP to Moon River. 4th at the Olympics is extremely amazing, people would wish to be in the top 10.
Even this skate, one of the worse of her career, still breathtaking. So talented, and such a presence on the ice. No one will ever be able to take that away from her, she was incredible. It's a shame we live in a world with the odds so stacked against her.
This is actually a pretty solid performance. Her opening triple cannot be matched. She just was suffering a lot of mental stress because of the media and backlash she was getting due to the Kerrigan scandal. She deserved better marks then this though- she didn't fall at all. Two footed a bit on one landing, but pretty much a clean skate. If only she had delivered at the 1992 Olympics. If she had skated the way she did at the 1991 US Championships, she would have taken the gold. 1992 was the first time that even the Gold Medalist (Yamaguchi) fell during their program. If Harding had landed that triple axel, given more gusto to her energy on the ice, she would have landed a medal. It's so sad that after all that hard work, she turned in two lackluster performances in Albertsville. In 1994 I think she actually skated better, but the competition was far more fierce.
Say what you will like the others but she was the first American to do a triple axel and I remember it live. It’s remarkable what she achieved given her background and upbringing. And say what you will about her mother, but with their social status, to fund and supprt an incredibly expensive sport and have her natural athletic talent is to be admired, just for technical merit and having the media against her. But I do remember Dick Byron and Peggy Fleming commentating some good words about her...um that is before that knee thing
Absolutely deserved to medal imo. Watching Tonya is always electrifying and she performed well after having a meltdown. If you watch I Tonya the narrative is that she was looked down on by judges and the figure skating establishment due to her poor upbringing, lack of expensive costumes and delicate gracefulness etc. She broke the mold and didn’t fit in with the high brow world of figure skating. She was certainly a rebel, for better or for worse. Incredible skater to this day.

I feel so bad for Tonya. I really wish she was able to do her planned Triple Axle here. Still, seeing her face at 5:53 just brightens me back up. You can tell skating at the olympics was dream come true for her. Seeing her father look on proudly is a nice moment too.
So she was skating to the theme of Jurassic Park when this happened? I find that oddly appropriate. Any way, if Tonya Harding skating to Jurassic Park doesn't send you back to the 90s I don't know what will.
tide32athlete It reminds me of that scene in Scream where Jaime Kennedy sees the guy in the video store "Oh, that's in bad taste if you were the only suspect in a viscous murder, would you want to be seen hanging around the horror movie section?"
***** Not necessarily true. She managed to return in a pro competition later on in the 1990s sponsored and aired by ESPN. She did not perform that well. She competed the Toe Loop and Salchow. When she landed the jumps, they were spot-on. But, she had too many pops and the choreography and music were awful -- worse than anything she had done prior.
Because she knew she didn't deserve to be there are conspiring to send a death threat against Nancy and later becoming aware that they were going into attack her. Guilt undermines people.
Not really her fault. She couldn’t choose what family she was born into. She did more born in shitty circumstances than most people born with a silver spoons in their mouth. She was a great talent surrounded by horrible people.
1besieged The adjective I would use about Scott Hamilton’s commentary is between “catty” and “bitchy”. It was obvious to me, with his little sideways comments about her lace issues, that he didn’t believe it and thought she was just trying to inject a delay. “This just never happens...except it’s happened to Tonya four times....”. Meee owwww!
"While preparing for Lillehammer, Tonya found herself not only under investigation by the FBI, but also the subject of two disciplinary proceedings by the sports authorities. This was a lovely routine!!! I don't quite understand why people are going after her for being allowed to skate last when that was a judgment call buy the judges not Tanya, if anything be mad at them not her. It's not Tanya's fault her lace broke, if her boot didn't feel right she could have injured herself and I'm hoping while some may not care for her the last thing people would want would be to wish her harm.
I agree. Any competitor, yes, even Tonya Harding, is entitled to a reskate if they have an equipment failure. Skating on a boot with a loose blade or loose lacings is a one way trip to a broken ankle.
The opening triple lutz is probably the best I have ever seen. The triple flip and salchow are also good, the loop not so much. She seems to run out of steam in the second half of the program and looks slow.
The more I view this program, the more impressed I am with it. True, it isn't a gold-medal winning performance, but it's impressive. Oksana Baiul deserved the gold and I loved her program, but I think Baiul's long program overdid it a bit on the cutsey element. Tonya isn't the dainty little ice princess, but I always thought her artistry was far better than she was given credit for. I have fallen in love with the Jurassic Park theme song ever since I saw this performance. As you can tell, I'm on Tonya's side. OK, she had a rough around the edges personality, but that didn't mean she was a thug who would have someone maimed. What a shame that someone this talented couldn't make money from her skating after age 23.
She really is talented. Even with all the pressure. She still can handle it. Regardless everything, what she has done, the way she was raised, this and that. She couldnt skate anymore, the only thing that makes her alive. Lets just remember this woman for all the talent she got. And these footages are her legacy.
I'll admit, I don't know much about figure skating. But to me, Tonya Harding was much more fun to watch than the other girls. The "artistry" aspect is important to the sport itself, but idk her power and jumps were just more captivating.
One great triple Lutz doesn't make for a top score by itself. She missed two of her triple jumps (turning one into a single and two-foot-landing the other), and she ran out of gas toward the end so her footwork was sluggish. I couldn't "boo" the judging on this. I think it was fair.
She was doomed. I think her jumps were so much prettier than Kerrigan's, she was always straight up and high. Kerrigan seems lopsided and barely finished before the landing. Tonya's program didn't have the artistry but she was a great skater. I had forgotten she had asthma.
i cant believe they put yuka sato ahead of her after the short, when yuka did a single lutz , and then her free was not THAT much better than tonyas , tonya was way better than katarina in the long as well, the judges really let tonya have it because of the scandal
I really like the music, especially for her. I think it would have been better if she had attempted the triple axel. This program shows that she was prepared to contend for a medal at this Games. She needed a clean short and a successful 3-axel in the long, and she could have captured the bronze.
I understand it’s a competition but if she had an issue with her skate/laces then surely that’s a huge safety hazard. I don’t understand why people boo-ed. One wrong landing and that could have been her ankle completely gone and her career over. She skated very well despite the mishap beforehand and for that she should be applauded :)
Those boos from the crowed didn't make her nervous, they made her mad!! she was certainly an athlete for the ages! Good to hear life did turn around for her eventually.
She is really good from the way she threw herself up high and the flawless landing and she’s fast. She is better than the other one.. I wished she believed in herself and not engaged in that plot. She has the talent. If only she sticked to the right path..
Even ignoring the whole controversy around Tonya Harding I see visibly why Nancy Kerrigan won. Nancy had incredible grace and finesse in her skating and her overall style was very patient and beautiful. Tonya while she has grace chose a bad song, seemed repetitive and simplistic in comparison. She focused on spins in the air, skating backwards and waving her arms around which sort of lowered the quality of her performance. It also seemed a tad......improvised. Overall glad Nancy won.
Hamilton could afford to be snarky. He benefitted from the sport in ways Bonaly, Bobek, and Harding werent allowed to. Dick Button was also snide at times, but far more professional. Also Button was a double gold medalist while a student at Harvard back in the forties. Scotty has also whined that the Tonya scandal ruined the sport financially. Now the only babes winning gold medals are Russian adolescents.
Tonya's biggest problem was that she came from the wrong side of the tracks. Look at Nicole Bobek, similar background, similar outcome. In skating it is a crime to be poor. She wasn't supposed to have been there. How dare she have made as far as she did, to the Olympics, no less.
The biggest problem she had was her fuckwit wife-beating criminal husband and his moronic best friend supposed bodyguard. Basically, idiots surrounding her. Dumb and Dumber.
Stephen Fry The movie I,Tonya really nailed it on that point. They had to be the dumbest criminals ever, especially the fake bodyguard that hired the other two idiots to club Nancy.
Skaters like Nancy or Nicole Bobek's worst performances were spent with their asses on the ice multiple times, falling on spin combinations . She didn't have one fall here(probably why she avoided 3axel attempt) Pulled off some big triples, great spins. This performance wasn't as bad as it's been said to be
Dylvente Delay is the key in her jumps. Because of the height she got she was able to delay the rotation until the highest point in the jump and do all the rotation on he way down.
I thought the same thing. There was the problem with her dress strap at 93 Nationals, the problem of the loose blade at 93 Skate America, and this. Was there another incident?
So she has bad luck or maybe their is,someone messing with her wardrobe?? I highly doubt she would do it to herself don't you think that would be dumb??? And you can clearly see that her skate was messed up in one of the videos when the judge was looking at it.
When you don't have the advantages other people do, things spiral. Of course she made poor choices, but she did such powerful jumps she broke boots and laces. And Scott Hamilton knows that while it doesn't happen very much at this level, it does happen and things would have been very different if she had been able to get a sponsor and some friggin' support from the Figure Skating Association (instead of them dissing her pink outfit and to stay married to nutjob Jeff).
I remember one of the reporters asking Nancy Kerrigan to comment on Tony's problem that evening and with kind of a snooty eye-roll she said "Well, it's always something; her costume, her skates, what can I say?"
Not to mention her eye roll and "Why bother, she'll just cry again," when eventual gold medallist Oksana Baiul wiped her eyes after weeping prior to the medal ceremony. Rather a mean-spirited comment and not a good reflection on her character
very good skate. If this program had reached it's full potential (from what i've seen she was training) it could've been the most technically packed program in that season in the ladies. the jumps she did here plus the triple axel and the days prior to the competition she was practicing 3Lo + 3Lo in practices and landing triple axels. a program with a triple axel and a triple loop triple loop combination would've been insane at the time and would still give competition to most ladies right now.
She had a lot going on in her life. Bad marriage, the incident involving Nancy Kerrigan. I think things could have been very different for her if not for the toxic people in her life at the time.
Isn't it odd that there's a character named Gerald Harding in Jurassic Park and that her last name is Harding and that she's skating to music from Jurassic Park?
The commentator says only one other woman had landed a triple axel in competition and Tonya had already landed the triple axel in competition two or three years prior to this.
She was incredibly talented and overcame a lot of disadvantages. She wasn’t from a typical background. Training to be good enough to compete at that level is expensive and she over came her lower class background. One of the best jumpers in the sport, though the commentary is spot on, she was a better athlete then an artist.
she deserved better place in these olympics , she landed all her jumps
I think she's both an athlete and an artist back then.

Why is Tonya Harding being condemned for her domestic background.... Tonya Harding is a lady of great courage she's trying to rise above it!
One great triple Lutz doesn't make for a top score by itself. She missed two of her triple jumps (turning one into a single and two-foot-landing the other), and she ran out of gas toward the end so her footwork was sluggish. I couldn't "boo" the judging on this. I think it was fair.
Well, she actually doubled one. The guy just can't count.
Kameron Coleman she doubled her triple toe, the single they are referring to is the single axel instead of the triple.
She was doomed. I think her jumps were so much prettier than Kerrigan's, she was always straight up and high. Kerrigan seems lopsided and barely finished before the landing. Tonya's program didn't have the artistry but she was a great skater. I had forgotten she had asthma.
cowsongs
The better skater won this Olympics, Oksana Baiul
I LOVE LOVE LOVE YOUR SKATING TONYA HARDING!!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️
Tonya deserved so much better ❤️
She was so incredibly talented & graceful. Breaks my heart that the world didn't let her be great💔
Idk anything about ice skating or this person. Why am i here?
This is a really famous person who happens to be in a more famous scandal
same
enien3inco watch the 30 for 30
enien3inco: Stay, you might learn something. 😉
dude same
i cant believe they put yuka sato ahead of her after the short, when yuka did a single lutz , and then her free was not THAT much better than tonyas , tonya was way better than katarina in the long as well, the judges really let tonya have it because of the scandal
I really like the music, especially for her. I think it would have been better if she had attempted the triple axel. This program shows that she was prepared to contend for a medal at this Games. She needed a clean short and a successful 3-axel in the long, and she could have captured the bronze.
I think you can call that a "delayed" triple lutz. Textbook perfect triple lutz. Incredibly gorgeous triple lutz I have ever seen.
She danced to Jurassic park. She deserved a GOLD for that alone!
I remember watching this when it aired.
Tonya Harding is the greates skater of all time, she's taking skating to a higher level!
This is outstanding, it's amazing
Those boos from the crowed didn't make her nervous, they made her mad!! she was certainly an athlete for the ages! Good to hear life did turn around for her eventually.
She is really good from the way she threw herself up high and the flawless landing and she’s fast. She is better than the other one.. I wished she believed in herself and not engaged in that plot. She has the talent. If only she sticked to the right path..
I ♥️ you! I love Tanya Harding! She’s still the very best!
Such a shame that Tonya backed out of that triple axel and missed another great opportunity for history at the Olympics.
I would have LOVED that!!
Тоня Ты умничка😚
Even ignoring the whole controversy around Tonya Harding I see visibly why Nancy Kerrigan won.
Nancy had incredible grace and finesse in her skating and her overall style was very patient and beautiful.
Tonya while she has grace chose a bad song, seemed repetitive and simplistic in comparison. She focused on spins in the air, skating backwards and waving her arms around which sort of lowered the quality of her performance. It also seemed a tad......improvised.
Overall glad Nancy won.
Umm..she didn't won lol
Oksana Baiul won, off night for tonya. Just compare their lifetime performances, tonya is still superior.
Er, Kerrigan didn't win 😂😂😂
Err, Nancy didn't win . . .😂😂😂
oh scott, you are the premiere snarky commentator of the 90s and of all times.
Yeah, he's a sourpuss, especially towards Tonya.
How dare she have made as far as she did, to the Olympics, no less.
in life, it's a crime to be poor
The biggest problem she had was her fuckwit wife-beating criminal husband and his moronic best friend supposed bodyguard. Basically, idiots surrounding her. Dumb and Dumber.
Elizabeth Owens Both Tonya and Nicole are 2 of the best skaters the world will ever see. Love them both.
Stephen Fry The movie I,Tonya really nailed it on that point. They had to be the dumbest criminals ever, especially the fake bodyguard that hired the other two idiots to club Nancy.
She should have been a gymnast. She would have KILLED!
The last turn was surreal
WOW. I love figure skating.
2018
30+ years later and this incident never gets old.
The movie I, Tonya brought me here
Skaters like Nancy or Nicole Bobek's worst performances were spent with their asses on the ice multiple times, falling on spin combinations . She didn't have one fall here(probably why she avoided 3axel attempt) Pulled off some big triples, great spins. This performance wasn't as bad as it's been said to be
She was awesome.
I love Tonya Harding she is my idol!
💜💜💜!!!
I really love her ♥️
💝!
Ain’t no weakeness in her artistry sorry she not boring!
How figure skating has changed during 24 years since then!!!
At Nationals Dick Button commented on her lutz that "the delay in that jump is breathtaking."
Was there another incident?
some issue with her laces. I'm not sure about the specifics.
So she has bad luck or maybe their is,someone messing with her wardrobe?? I highly doubt she would do it to herself don't you think that would be dumb??? And you can clearly see that her skate was messed up in one of the videos when the judge was looking at it.
She was poor and probably didn't have quality equipment like the other skaters
When you don't have the advantages other people do, things spiral. Of course she made poor choices, but she did such powerful jumps she broke boots and laces. And Scott Hamilton knows that while it doesn't happen very much at this level, it does happen and things would have been very different if she had been able to get a sponsor and some friggin' support from the Figure Skating Association (instead of them dissing her pink outfit and to stay married to nutjob Jeff).
Love the music
I remember one of the reporters asking Nancy Kerrigan to comment on Tony's problem that evening and with kind of a snooty eye-roll she said "Well, it's always something; her costume, her skates, what can I say?"
Not to mention her eye roll and "Why bother, she'll just cry again," when eventual gold medallist Oksana Baiul wiped her eyes after weeping prior to the medal ceremony. Rather a mean-spirited comment and not a good reflection on her character
Kehrigen strikes me as being a "poor loser".
She had amazing talent and she threw it all away......so sad
Nancy was all like "shit!! Her performance was good" even thou nancys performance was superior, I think this one is really good
Tonya Harding I will always be on your side
I loved her spins.
the background music though!😂😂😂out of any songs they have to choose Jurassic Park😂😂i cant-😂😂
What are you saying? It was a beautiful score before it became a meme.
very good skate.
1:42 what is the name of that music piece?
I think it's from the movie, "Jurassic Park."
She like I AM A DINOSAUR! Imma skate like a brachiosaurus dammit! 😎😂😁
I love Jurassic Park theme song❤️
She was very artistic. Much better performance than Nancy's. However, she could do much better.
The best skater the world has ever known.
She had a lot going on in her life. Bad marriage, the incident involving Nancy Kerrigan. I think things could have been very different for her if not for the toxic people in her life at the time.
I love Tonya Harding the most beautiful lady to watch... and the best ice skater the world has ever seen!
One judge was shaking his head.
Isn't it odd that there's a character named Gerald Harding in Jurassic Park and that her last name is Harding and that she's skating to music from Jurassic Park?
I loved her!
Bless her heart she was such a hot mess.
I can't believe that she in 8th place that's bad
her clean jumps are textbook
The commentator says only one other woman had landed a triple axel in competition and Tonya had already landed the triple axel in competition two or three years prior to this.
Midori landed hers in 1988, 3 years prior to Tonya’s, however Midori already moved on to pros.
