I guess she was meaning by capturing Sonni's emotion it made it more real to us, but she probably didn't get the context of what she was trying to say during the short time given to do her acceptance speech. She probably cringes at it as much as we have.
It certainly upset me though watching the scenes of Sonni going through the pain, knowing that one mistake and he wasn't coming home, and the film captures that emotion so well.
I think seeing her go through hell does give the film a whole new dynamic rather than focusing solely on Alex who sees it as another day at the office and he doesn't show any emotional because he genuinely isn't afraid of his own mortality.
An truly incredible film and thanks to them all for bringing it to our screens so we can all be a part of the history made. And Alex will always be the star of the show, he free climbed El Cap without an inch of rope!! Respect..

It just shows the complete disconnect from reality. She doesn't understand that the film won the oscar and is incredible not because of the actual film making that took place but WHAT THEY WERE FILMING. I have no doubt all the crew did an 11/10 job but that's not what makes this film special. What makes it special was the subject matter. This could have been filmed with a single gopro with 0 editing and it would still have a far greater chance of winning the oscar than anything else these people decided to make. It's really absurd how many people fail to understand the achievement is what makes this film what it is a million times more than any other aspect.

The male shade is strong with this one. Yes as the music is playing them off the stage, she does manage say a nice thing about Alex, but it's an afterthought. Imagine if she started the speech recognizing the most important thing about the film -- Alex Honnold and his incredible climb, and then maybe said something about how honored she felt to be a small part of such an amazing achievement. And then said Alex come on we really need you say a few words. That would have shown grace, humility and sense of perspective, which her actual speech had absolutely none of.
Instead she thanks her kids but forgets her male son, barely acknowledges her husband, over celebrates Alex's girlfriend (who was directly responsible for Alex's worst accident that easily could have killed him), and perhaps way worst of all, completely disses Alex and his accomplishment by saying the film would have been "so boring" without his girlfriend in it. This director is the dictionary definition of a female chauvinist (noun, female who patronizes, disparages, or otherwise denigrates males in the belief that they are inferior to females and thus deserving of less than equal treatment or benefit).
Maybe even more cringe-worthy than everything she said was the seven seconds of silence after she grabbed the Oscar and soaked in the wild applause like it was all for her. Her time on the podium was easily the most cringe-worthy thing I've ever witnessed. Overall I think female empowerment is a good thing, but you can also have too much of anything. Anyone, male or female, can get lost in thinking too much of themselves and where they rank in the overall scheme of things. To combine the deluded sense of perspective with the chauvinistic shade enthusiastically thrown at important males in her life makes me wonder how much better the film would have been it was made by a co-director who didn't think everything outside the girlfriend was "so boring."
Alex Honnold and his accomplishments are jaw-dropping and inspiring, this film was pretty good and I really liked climber Jason Momoa getting all stoked as he announced the winner.
I've seen a few Alex Honnold interviews and my guess is he processed this dumpster fire of a speech as just another surreal moment during the brightest spotlight of his career, and was happy to get back to climbing.
I really hope the latest Blu-ray extras of this movie include a clip of the first time Alex and her were alone in a room after this speech. "So you spent 2 years documenting my free solo of El Capitan and your math comes up with: Me and my pursuit minus my girlfriend equals "so boring??" And you felt the need to share this Insight with millions of people? I'm not big on grudges but I promise you the next time I decide to do anything noteworthy you will be the last person I'd call to document it."

in defence of this speech, they were clearly flustered and shocked, I think the intention was to save Alex's praise to the end as it's the most important, but the flow of it was a bit off so rather than sounding like the end of a build up of 'thank yous' it sounded like a footnote, which I don't think was on purpose. Also, Alex is a climber, his moment was reaching the top, these guys are the amazing film makers who captured it, so this is their moment to cherish, this is the end of their long labour of love.
