      @@Jj-gi2uv The most difficult sections were shown in the film and discussed in depth (Freeblast, Monster Offwidth, The Boulder Problem, Enduro Corner, The Traverse etc). They didn't want an overly long film and they didn't want a film just for hard core rock climbers. Also, many sections of the climb are relatively easy and would have lessened the drama of the main hard sections so no need to show those parts. Plus, Alex took breaks to eat and go to the bathroom and take his shoes off etc. They did a great job making a film with jaw dropping climbing footage as well as a film non climbers can enjoy. Can't make everyone totally happy but they came close and as a result got an Oscar, 7 Emmy's, and numerous other awards! I enjoyed seeing the French trailer but there's nothing significantly new. The film is fine as is and the editor won major awards too for a great job. So overall I don't totally agree with you but as a climber myself if they had squeezed in a few more clips I wouldn't have minded. In an interview with Rich Roll Chai and Jimmy mentioned a rockfall incident in Morocco that they kind of wanted to include but couldn't find a smooth way to do it and it wasn't that important overall. Not easy making a movie!

      I don’t - I actually believe dawn wall is a way better movie. And I mean movie, not climbing feat.... dawn wall is amazing

    • @AMM1998
      @AMM1998 6 років тому +10

      @@davidgoldstein7149 yeah, the dawn wall and free soloing el cap aren't comparable. They both are tied along with ondra's silence for the greatest climbing achievement. There's no way to say which is #1 but I believe none of them deserve to not be in the #1 spot.
      Judging the movies alone, not influenced by the climbing feat, I also agree the dawn wall was a much better film.
      I feel free solo focused immensely too much on Alex's girl. I understand it was supposed to be a biopic from the start, but once soloing el cap became a legit option, they should've ditched most of the girlfriend drama and focused on the actual climb.
      The dawn wall covered Tommy's incredible background story, but at the same time it was fairly brief and straight forward. The majority of the film was pure climbing.
      Free solo only brushed on Alex's upbringing which I thought was awful. This man has done so much in yosemite alone previous to soloing el cap they could've filled up half of the film. His childhood was covered for 30 seconds. The rest of the film was about the girl.
      Overall, I left the theater in awe after seeing both films, but after seeing free solo for a 3rd time I really wish they took it in a different route.
      If it's the "greatest human athletic achivement in history, why is half of the film focused on his girlfriend?

    Even though he seems like he would rather be elsewhere climbing than in a suit on the stage, he seems to be the one giving The most accurate and precise answers to the questions than everyone else. Funny too. The guy is super intelligent evidenced by the fact that the climbing seems like a puzzle of the mind and body skills together.

  • @summitsparrow
    @summitsparrow 6 років тому +105

    It's pretty crazy how you can clearly see Alex is not doing it for money or fame or any reason other than he just loves climbing. Not a lot of athletes have that pure love for the sport these days, and it's awesome that he hasn't really let fame effect him very much. I mean, he's obviously the best in the world, and he must know it, but I get the sense he's the kind of dude who would just be down to grab a beer with you on a Tuesday evening as if he's just a regular guy.

    • @AMM1998
      @AMM1998 6 років тому +8

      Well he doesn't drink so you won't be going out with him for a beer, and he's definitely the best free soloist in the world, as well as top 1% of climbers, but he himself has admitted he is not the best in the world.

    • @freitag314
      @freitag314 5 років тому +2

      I don't know what his financial goals are, in relation to climbing, but we can be sure he's making plenty of money on this film and the attendant media opportunities. When Peter Croft soloed Astroman, which relative to the progress of climbing at the time, was a HUGE milestone, only a small handful of climbers understood the significance of this accomplishment, and Peter Croft made no effort to earn a dollar for his effort. I believe Alex is capable of calculating all of the variables associated with climbing and documenting his landmark achievement, and I wish him well and hope he retires before the inevitable occurs.

    • @daedalron
      @daedalron 5 років тому +1

      There's an easy way to get the "Director's cut" version. I mean, it's easy, and impossible at the same time (impossible since you can't forget what you already know...). All you have to do is watch the movie without knowing if he succeeded, or if he fell and die, and it's a commemorative movie. Because that was what they felt back then. And it had to be absolutely horrific for them...

    Alex Honnold is one of the bravest innovators in the world of climbing. He's a purist of the highest order. He does all but a couple of his climbs without any announcement, fanfare, or anyone really knowing about it. The guy is doing this for the pure love of it, and he's in the top 5 guys doing Rock Climbing in the world today.
    Several of the old climbers from the 60's-80's have declared him the best big wall climber alive today, and in the top 3 all time at what he does.
    There is one Czech Man who climbs harder stuff, but he does ropes and doesn't free solo (to my knowledge). But he does the hardest stuff ever seen in the history of climbing. The film "silence" is about the guy

I was left with the idea that Sanni caused him to fall and injure himself and jeopardize/delay the climb, but at the same time helped Alex grow as a person and gives him more of reason to not die and realize what is most important. Please, rope climb going forward. Relationships trump accomplishments in the end, but what an accomplishment and what a girlfriend!

    You get the feeling that Alex has worn a suit a total of two other times. I wish he would use the word "thought" instead of "was like" but I'll cut Alex some slack since he completed what is probably the greatest athletic achievement in the history of mankind. Jimmy is so well spoken, but it's way beyond an olympic achievement. If you get silver in the olympics, you don't die.

    • @100mphFastball
      @100mphFastball 6 років тому +13

      Greatest athletic achievement is so limiting. It's more than athletic. I don't know the term but, it's greater than athletic.

    • @pahwraith
      @pahwraith 6 років тому +3

      Maybe the modern Olympics. People used to the die I'm the ancient Olympics all the time. They used to box with leather handwraps and they also fought MMA with kicks and chokes too..they called it pankration.
      One guy managed to win gold and also die in pankration. His opponent submitted but he died before the match ended.

      I would just say something like "the greatest four hours of human mental and physical focus, skill, and courage, in recorded history." Once you get beyond that time frame, you're stepping into territory with some truly unbelievable accomplishments such as Shackletons rescue of the crew of the Endurance.
      But for four hours, it's probably unparalleled.

    • @robertgallacher7214

    I’m thinking, if one is climbing solo and the path up is no longer possible shouldn’t we have something to make it easy to get past a few hurdles. Something like a tube of rapid drying cement that sticks to the face, a gun that shoots an arrow into the face or a parachute that is lighter and smaller than any other yet. It will make the sport easier to watch although I’m not complaining. Thanks
