  • SEGA’S $600 GENESIS THAT I CAN’T PLAY, YET! | UNBOXING The Pioneer LaserActive PAC-S10 | Retro Renew
    In today's episode of Retro Renew, I unbox a brand new Sega Genesis for the Pioneer LaserActive LaserDisc Player. The Pioneer CLD-A100 was capable of playing Sega Genesis, Sega CD and Mega LD games if you have the PAC-S10 Control Pack (which I am unboxing in this video) as well as TurboGrafx HuCards, TurboCD, SuperCD, and LD-Rom2 games with the PAC-N10 Control Pack. The LaserDisc player retailed at over $900 and the Control Packs were $600 each when it was introduced in 1993! This is an uncommon Sega Genesis console that I won’t be able to play until I get my hands on a Pioneer CLD-A100 LaserActive LaserDisc Player! Enjoy the unboxing!
    So here's what you will find in this video:

    I can relate to what he is talking about. I actually brought the Pioneer Laser Active disc player for about $300 in one of those mail order catalog in 1995 and still have it around. Have the Genesis module and controller too. It is a great device and nice build.

    There are no videos with it actually being used on a dos pc which would be cool.

    I remember seeing the laser active with the genesis insert at the home theater store when I was a kid and thought it was so cool. I remember my dad was shopping for a prologic add on unit for his stereo. Didn’t realize it cost so much. There was also a turbo grafx unit too. I heard the one chip used in the genesis insert can go bad. It was in a discussion back in 2010 or something I came across a while back...

    Recap it, pull the battery asap.
    Also, you should be able to use it on it's own. It outputs RGB to the A100, which the player drops to composite to mix in with the native composite signal of the Laserdisc. You can't usually get RGB from the laseractive unless you tap these pins anyway as Laserdisc can't do anything higher than composite.

  • @meganpapa1
    @meganpapa1 3 роки тому

    I have had this and the laserdisc player since 1995. Used to play it a lot with Sega CD games but mostly used it a laserdisc player and to play the few laseractive games I had. The only downside was the the laserdisc player only had composite output and no S-video. I was always on the lookout for the NEC Turbografx-16 PAC , very rare and expensive now. I paid $100 for the Laserdisc player with the Genesis PAC. It was a floor-model at PC Richard electronics store.

    This is amazing! I've been trying to figure out what this thing was for years! I remember playing on one of these as a kid when the were new, parents were shopping for furniture and the store had one of these set up as a demo. My sister and I entertained ourselves playing on this while they shopped. I had played Genesis at friends' houses, but had never seen something like this an was pretty amazed. I also remember the whole setup being stupid expensive, I think about $2000 including the required LD player. Asked my parents if we could get it and they just laughed! But anyway, I'm excited to see this since I've never seen mention of it since nor met anyone who has heard of it. I was starting to think I just dreamt it or it was some retail demo station that didn't exist in the wild or something.
    Side note- Did you ever acquire the corresponding LD player? For what it's worth, the Japanese model will likely work fine on US voltage without a converter. I'm sure you know the power supply is an AC-to-DC converter, but there should be enough tolerance built in to handle 120v input on a 100v power supply (and more than likely if you meter an outlet the actual voltage in your house is probably closer to 110.) Where you really have to worry about using a converter on that small of a difference is with heating elements and motors where they're by nature more sensitive to small voltage differences. I have a Japanese Dreamcast from launch that has always been used on US voltage without conversion and still works great 20+ years later.

    Hey Tito, listed voltages like those listed on Japanese appliances are nominal voltages. if the voltage was to go down or up 10 to 20 volts it would still be safe. Usually, these tolerances are built into power products. Depending on where you live if you were to actually measure the voltage coming from your wall socket throughout different times of day it varies quite a lot. Hope this helpful

    • @MachoNachoProductions
      @MachoNachoProductions  3 роки тому +1

      That is great too know! Do you want know if it will affect the console long term?

    • @chewbaccasaurusrex692
      @chewbaccasaurusrex692 3 роки тому

      @@MachoNachoProductions if it was to affect anything it would usually affect the power supply only due to that being what is taking in the voltage and converting it to DC for the console. You can look at some forums on some similar power rated items and what people have said. But traditionally at least in my experience I’ve had a Japanese Wii where the power supply was rated nominally at 110 and I live in the US where it’s 120v and it’s been running fine for the last 3 years with pretty frequent use. Unless it’s like a 30 volt difference you should be pretty okay. I’m not an electrical engineer by any means but having taken electrical classes for my aircraft courses most circuits have pretty big tolerances built in and the listed voltage is nominal.

      Unfortunately both the X'eye and the LaserActive were doomed in the US from the start... a couple things I have yet to hear a youtuber talk about with these devices is that two of their biggest selling points were that they were also home karaoke and CDV players. Karaoke had yet to really catch on in the states and CDV (Video CD format) was huge in Asia but never really made it over to the states.

    Let's be honest, Laserdisc was a high-end luxury video format. This would have been marketed toward people who already had thousands put into their home video/audio set up and probably didn't want to "cheapen" it or clog up space with a video game console

    • @MachoNachoProductions
      @MachoNachoProductions  3 роки тому +1

      It was definitely marketed as a high end video format for sure which is why it didn’t do so well in the US. I think in some Asian countries it did really well. Notably Japan’s and Hong Kong. I think they had a better rental infrastructure that made watching LDs more affordable. Cheers Michael!

    When you finally get around to servicing this, there are a couple areas you probably want to pay close attention to - namely the area around the Pioneer IC (which handles communication with the laser disc drive) and the 3-4 vias near C129. The PAC-S10 I just fixed had traces that were ruined by electrolytic fluid, which manifested itself by, first, freezing up every time the console booted and accessed the laser disc drive, and second, by sound missing on genesis games that the Z80 was responsible for. I've written up my experience here to help others who want to take on the PAC-S10 challenge:

      Please don't ever listen to the vids/people who say to twist the caps off the board. lol
      A very last resort might be to very carefully snip through the old caps with sharp snips, keeping the snips as parallel to the PCB as possible, but any mechanical stress on the pads could rip them (and the traces) up.
      A far safer method is to invest in some soldering "tweezers", so you can hit both pads/legs with heat at the same time...
      www.aliexpress.com/item/32888584421.html?spm=a2g0o.productlist.0.0.33e95dabp4xC1u&algo_pvid=1e20ea21-e45d-4dd9-98c7-d54124825b7d&algo_expid=1e20ea21-e45d-4dd9-98c7-d54124825b7d-11&btsid=2100bdcf16082460060182742e40a0&ws_ab_test=searchweb0_0,searchweb201602_,searchweb201603_
      A hot air station can also work, but be sure to wear safety glasses, as the caps will often "explode", and ping into your eyes otherwise. You just have to keep shuffling the heat between the two pads, then very carefully lift the cap off with tweezers, being sure not to put any real pressure on it until the solder is molten.
      Some SMD parts will have a tiny dot of glue under them, though, so will need a bit more gentle wiggling (and heating) to remove them. Too much heat for too long can "popcorn" the PCB, though. The hot air station should be set to no more than around 340C.
      (I've found the stations need to be set a fair bit hotter than the solder's melting point to work.)
      When using the soldering tweezers, it's also worth using a regular soldering iron to add a tiny bit of fresh solder to the old stuff. It generally makes it a lot easier to remove the caps.
      Also, adding a small dab of liquid "No Clean" flux to each pad can help a lot.

      @MachoNachoProductions  3 роки тому +1

      Wow thank you for all the advice and amazing comment! Really appreciate it! I also definitely don’t recommend twisting caps off, very likely to rip off the pads. @@MachoNachoProductions No problem. ;)
      I'm not officially qualified in soldering, but have been doing repairs since CRT / LCD / Plasma TVs, VCRs, and arcade boards, and I've learned enough to know that twisting components off boards isn't the best idea. hehe
      But, I will admit that on my own stuff, I did used to snip through the caps sometimes if I was rushing or being a bit lazy. It's definitely the lesser of the two evils.
      Good luck with the recap, and getting hold of a nice LaserActive. ;)
      You had me checking on eBay again earlier for prices on a LaserActive. They're actually not too bad at all for a Japanese version. Only around £400-500 for a "mostly working" one.
      I've not had a Laserdisc player in many years, but still have three discs here.
      When I repaired a player (Pioneer DVL-919) for somebody a few years ago, he sent about 30 discs with it too, and I ended up watching ALL of them. lol
      There's still something about watching classic movies on Laserdisc. It was just at that point where the quality was nice enough on a CRT, but still had a touch of "grit" about it that suited movies on celluloid quite well.
      It didn't look too badly on a modern TV either.

      @@MachoNachoProductions So despite the different voltages between the American and Japanese units, can they both play the same PACs?

      That is a really good question Finn! I honestly don’t know the answer to that one. I’m hoping someone who does know can chime in. Again great question and thank you for asking it! Cheers bud!

      I got a fantastic deal on it, I paid about $250 for it and they routinely go for around $500 and more. I feel very fortunate. Right place at the right time! I consider this my Christmas present to myself, haha! Hoping to get an equally good deal on the laser active player. Cheers Jim! Happy holidays!

    It has a genesis logo, but comes with asian controller. Japan and asian pal have those small controllers

      Yeah, it’s quite the unique combination. I really like the smaller Japanese controller, very comfortable. Cheers Victor!

    Use the ounce gold price for a inflation calculator. It’s more accurate.

      May have to do this in the future. I typically use consumer price index. Appreciate the heads up! Cheers dude and happy holidays!
