Dude as a former Sega Genesis kid, it's criminal how many people sleep on Shining Force when it comes to "best Genesis games" I was so happy to see it as high as it was on your list. The original Shining Force was my first turn based strategy game and is still one of my all time favorites in the genre. Definitely solidified my decision to sub to the channel.
It's not criminal bro it's a turn based rpg, not everyone likes slow paced games
I remember renting Gunstar at a video star my brother and I used to go to as kids. We both decided on it because we pretty much tried everything else, and we said 'heck lets give it a try.' We went home expecting nothing special, probably some mediocre side scroller. Man, were we wrong. We were completely blown away. It is to this day the best game we've played on genesis. We still talk about it from time to time.
You can't forget about Rocket Knight Adventures. That was an amazing game.

Sonic 2 was half of my childhood! My parents divorced and I had a SNES at home at my Moms and went to my Dads every weekend where we had a Genesis. My Dad and I played all the Sonic like crazy but Sonic 2 was the one we always got the furthest in, we would usually make it to Sky Chase every run which was basically 2 bosses from the end, not bad for a 7 year old and my Dad that really didn't game lol.
Had a Sega Genesis at my grandparents and an SNES at home.

One common theme among ALL of those games: the soundtracks are AWESOME
Genesis games have a reputation for cheap, tinny sound, and that's almost exclusively the fault of the infamous GEMS backend. When someone who knew what they were doing got a hold of the Genesis's sound chip, that baby could _sing_. Shout out to Gauntlet 4's soundtrack and having the best 16-bit drumroll I've ever heard.
@@lilwyvern4 I personally think even the worst Genesis soundtracks still sound better than SNES ones, but I am definetely a biased fanboy.
Some pretty mediocre games with horrible soundfonts that still sound good to me would be Heavy Nova, Risky Woods, and Sonic Spinball.
Worth noting is that two of those games are western developed. Unfortunately western developers are among the culprits who tend to misunderstand how to make the Genesis sound good.
But anyway, my point is, even those games soundtracks (which are considered bad by most people) still sound way better than a bad SNES game to me.
So, I personally don't understand this Genesis has bad sound meme when bad SNES games sound just as bad
@@lilwyvern4 GEMS is a powerful piece of software that only got its reputation from developers using it to make quick and dirty soundtracks with the default settings. There were good soundtracks made with it, like Earthworm Jim 1&2, X-Men 2, Comix Zone, and Toejam and Earl 2.
It doesn't help that poor quality emulation of the FM synthesizer has been making it all sound terrible until relatively recently.

I love the Genesis/Mega Drive sound chip at these games.. ...also at Mega Turrican, Batman, Aladdin - and many more games!
Completed Shining Force 2 over 20 times at the very least! Yet I'm still excited every single time I start a new game. It's truly brilliant.

SF 1 and 2 were both awesome , but don't forget SF cd. Why don't they make games like them anymore? 🙄
@@GTSN38 I think SF CD was a bit lacking in terms of exploration and great characters. I loved the characters from SF1 and I think SF2 did everything that SF 1 did and bettered it. SF3 was a great game but I've only managed to play part 1.
It was pretty hard to find a WORKING Saturn Emulator, but with Yabause you CAN play all three discs of Shining Force 3, though disc 2 and 3 you need English patched, and there are a few problems, like using summons in certain areas.
@@EsotericBibleSecrets all of have to do is get a Pseudo Saturn cart flashed with Action Replay and you can play all three Shining Force III scenarios in English on an actual Saturn console
Herzog Zwei was the first game that ever kept me up till 5 am. I remember EGM originally gave it a really bad score (like 2/10), then a year or two later changed it to 10/10. I guess they totally misunderstood it the first time. Absolute classic. Still fun to pick up and play almost 30 years later.
It's a pretty cool game but we were hoooked on the Genesis/Mega Drive Dune 2 port for the (traditional) RTS fix.
I played it when I was in second grade. It was really a cool game!
I've always considered Herzog to be the best Sega Genesis game, even though I was always frustrated by the reloading vehicle not doing its job as well as it should.

No Herzog Zwei, no Blizzard. Blizzard loves to copy games they love to play and develop a few more features and do a lot more marketing. They copied this game and made it into WarCraft, which eventually led to StarCraft.
I feel the Mega Drive is totally underrated these days. Thanks for giving it some much deserved cred.
Absolutely, and I don't know why. Anyone who played games during that era knew there were two systems and two systems only, the SNES and the Genesis/Mega Drive. Everyone I knew (including myself) had either one, or the other, or both. And it should be mentioned that these two systems defined the 16 bit era and therefore defined the height of 2d gaming, while also being the beginning of the consoles wars.
@@williamkoscielniak820 true. Kids acknowledge Nintendo because it’s Nintendo and it’s still around but it’d be like 30 years ago everyone talks about PlayStation 5 and no one even remembers Xbox series x even existed.
I feel like there's still a lot of love and nostalgia for megadrive - the Saturn and the Dreamcast however are still looked down on, despite having two of the best libraries of all time.

Hell yes Shining Force 2. An absolutely amazing game.
that hit the memory lane button hard. The animations for fights was pure art at the time.
Shining Force 1 was great too. I enjoyed all the shining games.
I've played through both 1 and 2 over and over. Most recently on the Switch. The combat makes it fun to replay.
Oh man. The Kraken battle was epic!

Good to see Phantasy Star 4 and Shining Force 2 on here. What I wouldn't give to see a new PS installment (main story with Dark Force, no Online or Universe) for today's consoles. And Shining Force, when the last time the Shining series had a new story?
A revival of these would be great!

Alien Soldier is one of my favourite games that not enough people talk about. I've beaten it so many times I've lost count, and I still come back to it over and over.
That's impressive. I made it to the final boss once, though damn that thing was tough!
@@FunkMastaMegaFlex Oh absolutely, the game kicked my ass many a time before I managed to beat it. That's one thing I love about it though - you can get better at it by practicing and learning the ins and outs of how everything works. You have to pay attention, and it's so rewarding when you do.
When Scooter uses the bazooka... funny every time!!
I remember it took like 7 hours and many continues before finally beating it the first time, part of the fun is getting better at it and making a joke out of bosses that used to feel impossible.
It's kind of sad the high difficulty and complexity of it makes it intimidating for new players, hard to watch when someone picks homing or spread shot (worst weapon) for 2 or more slots and gets frustrated.
Another thing the Sonic and Knuckles cart can do: you can plug in Sonic 2 and play the whole game as Knuckles.
When I was a kid and knew nothing about this and did it for my first time I thought I was the first kid in the world that knew about it. I ran to get my brother and my mom and called my best friend Greg to tell him about it.
I couldn't wait to play the entire game over again. There were some areas he couldn't get to because he couldn't jump that high and other areas he could take with his climbing it was almost as if the developers knew about Knuckles even when they made Sonic 2. Amazing games I love them even today
@Code Metal Monkey I think that there is a rom hack of Sonic 3 & Knuckles where Tails follows Knuckles but I have never played it... yet

@Code Metal Monkey There are hacks of Sonic 1 that have you play as Tails or Knuckles in that game, with their respective abilities. And there's also the mobile port.
It's fun playing as Knuckles in Sonic 2. His low jump does make it tough here and there though his climbing ability and ability to fly adds so much to the levels. Unlike Ugandan Knuckles he knows the way!
I would have put "rocket knight adventures" on that list as a def #1, but love the list. A few good hidden gems here I now gotta check out! Great video

NHL 94 took over my entire summer once. So many competitive arguments with my friends, and we knew ZERO players lol
It was (and still is) one of the best sports games ever. I was never into hockey, but I enjoyed the video games. Fun fact about me, I actually bought NHL 94 over Zombies Ate My Neighbors when I went to buy a new game...the employee tried to convince me to purchase ZAMN, but I was like "nah brah", and I ended up buying NHL 94.

It was awesome i wasn't a sports game guy but that game was fun and when the fights broke out on the ice that was button mash time :) the only other sports game to grab me like that was Red card for the PS2 as it didn't take itself to seriously.

Cool list. Attaching the sonic 3 cartridge to sonic & knuckles was epic. Kid Chameleon for me is one of the best sega games.
Dude!! You include Pirate’s Gold! Nobody ever mentions that one (or Shadow Run). The entire list is good! Lots of fun to be had
Shining Force 2 and Phantasy Star 4 are my favorite on the Genesis, but I can't argue with Gunstar Heroes. I was first introduced to it in the Sega Channel, and I played it almost non-stop every time it came back to the channel.
I never played this Gunstar, but *Contra: the Hard Corps* is amazing.
Branching paths, different character with different powers and weapons.
I tried to play other Contra games, but I got bored in minutes. The Genesis one was the only one for me.
@@Dr4wfox I didnt have a Genesis so never played that version of Contra. i heard it was probably the best Contra game ever though. I just got the Contra Anniversary off steam, and its included along with all the other Contra games. so i am excited to play it on my PC.

@Justus Bowman No...it was always more figurative. He would occasionally do drunk streams where he would get drunk while playing a video game. He was a much better drunk than I ever was...My speech and my memory tend to get pretty terrible when I drink.
I remember being a kid and getting our Genesis along with Sonic and Cool Spot but Toejam & Earl was always my favorite. Like 3 months after we got our Genesis my idiot neighbor was having a yard sale and my parents picked us up a SNES from him for $50. It had only been out for less then a year lol

Sega had some interesting RPG games. Shining in the Darkness, and Phantasy Star 2, 3, and 4 being most noteable. Shadowrun was also a lot of fun. Rings of Power was rather different. Warriors of the Eternal Sun gave you a little old school D&D experience. The shining force games are worth a look too.
For those not familiar with the RPGs of the Genesis library, I suggest looking at Phantasy Star 2, 4, and Shining in the Darkness for more traditional turn based. If you want something a little more action involved, look at Shadowrun.
I was kind of lucky. I went Nintendo, and Snes. My friend went the Sega route, so I got familiar with both systems. :)
Shadowrun definitely my favorite genesis RPG. Too bad the Returns series was based on the inferior SNES version.
@@dereklathan I don't know about that. Returns did pull Jake Armitage, but it didn't feel like the Snes game. Dragonfall and Hong Kong were very enjoyable in my opinion. They may be turn based tactical, where Sega's game was more action, but I wouldn't compare them to the Snes.
I didn't even know there was a Sega Version of Shadowrun - how did I miss that ?
I have played the SNES one through several times though and really like that - so I guess I need to look into that - How did I miss that - I've never even heard it mentioned before. I looked it up and I don't think I've even seen it before either.
The PAL copy must be super rare then.
I tried more than once playing Sega version of Shadowrun.. i know it's a big game favored by many but i just don't like it.
I first played SNES version and loved it right away. the screen covers larger areas on SNES and gameplay is totally different from one version to another.
Yessss all of these I own and totally agree with! I recently beat Rings of Power (something that daunted me as a kid) and Might and Magic II (THAT was tough!). Two of my other favorite Sega games that felt RPGish but I suppose aren't are Landstalker and Crusader of Centy! Both fun as hell!

Well I think 'back in our day' you either had a Sega or nes (Genesis or SNES). It was really unheard of for a kid to have both!!

Phantasy Star IV is definitely one of my top favorites with Chrono Trigger , Earthbound , and Mario RPG. I'm glad Gunstar Heroes was on the list. I think Ecco the Dolphin is extremely underrated.
Chrono Trigger was SNES only in 1995. A masterpiece in its own right.
Phantasy Star IV is the best JRPG I’ve ever played. The soundtrack when your moving through the desert still pops in my head from time to time 🔥

Alien Soldier is one of my favorite Genesis game and it pains me that we only got a Sega Channel release of it in America (other than modern digital releases)

im crossing my fingers that after the release of Zero Wing and upcoming Wily Wars, and with their deal with Sega to produce official Genesis/Saturn controllers, that RetroBit eventually gets the all-clear to do official Sega licensed carts for stuff like Alien Soldier, Pulseman and Monster World 4

i beat contra hard corps with every charactor every way including the secret area. fang was the hardest though. still have it to.

@@steventhompson1999 Same here. Brownie the robot was practically cheating with his double jump and overpowered ball + chain weapon. Fang had a decent A weapon (basically the machine gun slot) but that was it. Getting all the endings with him was tough but I did it.
Amazing game and one of my favorites of all time.
I had the Japanese version for some reason, so extra hitpoints but no idea what the story and choices were. Like a decade later of playing the game I found the fourth and last path I've never even checked and it blew my mind (it was the missile one, with one of the best bosses in the form of the three robots combining).
i always use the chick with that lazer spread weapon. i love the slide ability that makes you invincible. snesdrunk loves contra 3 but says hardcore is too hard, but it honestly feels easier to me once you master the sliding ability.
Would have thought Comix Zone would have been in that list. Definitely in mine...
i thought contra hardcore would be in there for sure too. this guy loves contra 3 on snes and hardcore is better in every way imo. i think i remember him saying it's too hard, but i actually found it easier than 3 once i got down the slide ability.

@@4713Caine robocop vs terminator is amazing. never did beat it though, it's a really hard game, for me at least. i remember being all excited to get it on snes as a kid just to find it was a completely different, much worse game than the genesis version.

I didn't know the name of this music, but when I saw your comment, I was sure I knew what song you were talking about. Really, I have rarely considered a "fight" in a game as personal as the rematch against Zio, avenging Alys' death. And when I finally killed that bastard, I was as thrilled as the characters in the Game. Truly, PSIV is a forgotten masterpiece. It could be an extraordinary Anime.

Man, Shinobi III was one of, possibly favorite, games on the Genesis. I remember beating it a ton. I got a Genesis mini, and I can’t get past the third level lol. Funny how we used to beat these games a lot, but now, they whoop our asses.
As for a shoot em up, my brother and I played Biohazard Battle a lot. It was fun as hell, had great boss fights, and the graphics were incredible for the time.

I was a SNES kid myself so I always enjoy learning about awesome games I missed on the Genesis. Great list. A lot of which I'd never heard of before.
Phantasy Star 4's battle theme 'Meet Them Head On' is one of the best battle themes ever made for an RPG. Always gets my blood pumping!
I enjoyed "laughter" , the zio/lashiec battle theme and that pimped PS1 dungeon music which plays in air castle/ladea tower.
But honestly it was all great.
@@Transgender-ProphetMohammed I liked the Space Castle (or Air Castle) theme used in, among others, Lashec dungeon. The vehicle combat theme is rockin' too. Laughter is also a great track... It and the main battle theme are great showcases of the 'bass' range of the genesis sound chip (which can too often sound like a fart generator).

Gunstar heroes was a hidden gem. I feel like not many people knew about it. Loved that game. The 2 player action was on point. Double homing stars all the way.
I was also an SNES guy with a cousin who had a Genesis. Weekend sleepovers renting games. Ahh, pure happiness.

It looks better than that over rated Gunstar Heroes anyway.
It was a huge surprise when I discovered this game way after its time since it never reached my country. But its the kind of game I feel it is a bit underdeveloped, since the game hit its deadline and had to be rushed into market. I still think it is one of the best genesis title, but it looks a little less awesome every time I look at it.

Seriously, if any of you haven't played these games yet, do so. These games are every bit as fun today as they were in the 90s. And there are so many on the Genesis that could've been included but weren't.
Thanks for this man, the Genesis is my favorite console ever so I totally agree.
Gunstar Heroes, the Streets of Rage series are also all availible on Switch and 3ds, and the ports are super good, they aren't just lazy emulation, but we're instead remade to be high res by Sega AM2.
Oh and also, I feel the Genesis game Ranger X is worth mentioning, here. It's my favorite Genesis game of all time
@@auralunaprettycure if you haven't played yet, try the 3DS version of Shinobi 3! The 3D effects look really cool on that game! And it's a darn good game too!

Gunstar Heroes is the best! Great review but I'd also shout out its awesome soundtrack, humour, cool story and superb ending. I love the bosses, the Dice Maze, the hyperkinetic shooting and brawling through waves of enemies... I want to go play it again now too :-)
Shining Force 2 is easily my number one. Fond memories of that one include getting stuck for six months and being able to progress only when I was stuck at home with the shingles.
Let me guess: Talos? How did the devs thought a child would figure out that you need to put a wooden slab into a random hole in a tree using A instead of C to open a menu while being next to an interactable object is way beyond me. Not to mention you can actually bypass Yeel on your first visit of the region without even realizing it.

Both Shining forces are Really really good, id love a Remake of these games with good graphics and music.
Same here man, took me literally months to figure out you had to press a different button to get the menu and "use" the plank instead of inspecting the hole. That should have been automatic.
X-men 2 clone wars and the Punisher were two of my favorites not mentioned here otherwise this is a good list

Genesis version is still fun as heck for a cartridge game in a time where they didn't release all the arcade games or gave us watered down versions but yeah mame is better overall. X-Men arcade is fun as well but the other 2 X-Men games on Sega are awesome. Had em as a kid and they got that nostalgia" hard as nails but rewarding" factor. Now that X-Men and spiderman: arcades revenge is complete trash. Forever stay away from that one.

Phantasy Star iv is a personal favorite of mine. Still play it. But as a kid it was the game i was always looking for.
Shining Force 1 and 2 are amazing too.
Shining Force 2 is one of the most under appreciated games from the rpg genre ever. Great art battle animations, plenty of hours of great fun and variety of skills/classes. End game rewards for the grinders to go after if they want to(The Mithril Weapons). And a very well balanced difficulty. It's a great game on it's own, and was definitely one of the best major pre cursors to what we got with Final Fantasy Tactics. Unfortunately was just mostly over shadowed by the RPG supremacy that Snes held during that era after it's release with FF6 hitting 6 months later.
Great list! Wonder Boy in Monster World is my personal favorite Genesis game.

It’s a great list. Some of my favorites missing include:
1. Disney’s Aladdin (Sega version more fun)
2. Cool Spot (Sega version great music)
3. Road Rash III (beating people on bikes soo fun)
4. Vectorman (I + II late in the game masterpieces)
5. Ecco the Dolphin (beautiful game that might be my #1 if it weren’t so blasted difficult. Tides of Time was supposedly a worthy sequel that picks off where it leaves off but I’d never know since I never beat 1).
I’d also sub S&K lock on w/sonic 3 for sonic 3 because on its on sonic 2 is a better game than each individually and S3 is better than S&K but incomplete but I guess he figured that’d be cheating.
When I played streets of rage 2 with my brother I finally gave up my envy of arcades, this game was just better than arcade beat em ups. Man o man the ending theme was just heavenly.
only arcade game compare to this is Vendetta by Konami.

Mega Turrican is an underrated gem. Great soundtrack and one of the best run and gunners on the Genesis. Contra HardCorp is excellent too, and I have a soft spot for Truxton: an early, but excellent SHMUP. Great list.

Loved SF2. Numerous play throughs to try different or challenging battle comps, the few hidden characters, specialty upgrade items and my favorite surprise as a kid, the hidden battle after beating the game 100%.

To be fair. The names on the list where all good. I was sad rocket knight didn't make it but seeing his choices I can understand why. I personally would have put Dune and Jungle Strike on here but thats just my opinion. Still a great list.
Ha that’s a weird hill to die on. I mean this list is what an average snes fan would like so you have to lower yr expectations of what they’re capable of understanding.
To this day I cannot get past the first stage of Alien Soldier. It's really strict on how much you can screw up before you're left defenseless against the bosses and has so many possible actions it has to be one of the hardest games to even begin playing. But from what I've seen once you get the gist of it it's amazing, and the whole game is basically a boss rush. Also it has 7 force which is undoubtably one of the best bosses to ever exist.
That track on shinobi 3 during the water board level triggers the good memories

@@waltersobchak7275 never walk thru. Pick ur own team do it your way. But range and movement are key. Love to hear any progress. (I mean maybe you could do well with three big tanks and a healer....i gotta get this game.)

The Shining Force/Darkness series was phenomenal. Herzog Zwei was super unique and fun. I also propose Master of Monsters.

i got this sega genesis mini for xmas and it’s so much fun. i’ve been playing this game Monster World IV and it’s just so good and leaves me absolutely impressed for a game from 1994. it’s an action-adventure platform game with an amazing world. i’d recommend checking it out if you haven’t already.
The Wonder Boy series is really great.
Try out Wonder Boy in Monsterland, Wonder Boy 3: The Dragon's Trap(there's a recent remake of this one), Wonder Boy in MonsterWorld and most recently Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom (which pays homage to all of the other games in the series), these all play similarly to Monster World IV.
There is also the original Wonder Boy which is more of a running/platformer (think Super Mario style play but simpler), and Monster Lair 3 which a platformer/shooter.
Phantasy star4 changed my idea of how Good non snes jrpgs could be in the 16 bit era. Its such a well programmed and thoughtful finale to the o.g. Series.
Good list. Another great game is Alisia Dragoon which never gets talked about. Sword of Vermillion is awesome, and both have the best video game music ever written. Ever.

Tails isn't a problem once you get the timings of your moves sorted.

I got quite a lot of these games as part of the SEGA Mega Drive & Genesis Classics collection on Steam- Gunstar Heroes, Shining Force II, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Shinobi III, Streets of Rage 2, Phantasy Star IV and Alien Soldier. Along with all the other games in that collection which weren't on this list, several of which are very good, it makes a good introduction to the Mega Drive & Genesis library that I missed out on as a child by also being a Nintendo kid like you.
That's a pretty good list. My list is different because I instantly got into the Genesis on the day it was released so my top five list consists of the system's earliest titles and mostly because I have MAJOR nostalgia invested in them.
1. Revenge Of Shinobi.
2. Golden Axe
3. Phantasy Star 2
4. Truxton
5. Splatter House 2
I didn't get to play the post Sonic era until emulation was available, but it doesn't change my top five. I'll have to think about making a top 10 list sometime.
Should've made this "15 best" instead. MUSHA and Contra: Hard Corps would've rounded out this list perfectly. Excellent picks, though!

Oh man, I remember Sega Channel. I was so upset when it was discontinued. Absolutely loved it and it blew my mind when I was younger. Won a couple contest prizes off of it too. Good stuff.
Sor2, phantasy star 4 and shining force 2 were 3 of my most favorite genesis games ever with phantasy star 4 being the rpg that got me hooked on rpg's. I was so thrilled when I saw they were included in the genesis collection on ps4. Currently running through phantasy star 4 again
I was so bummed when I found out the Road Rash series wasn't on the list. So many hours focusing on stealing a particular weapon then finally using it felt so good.

Gunstar Hero's was a really sweet game! I remember when we bought it, it just looked so cool and we hadn't heard or known anything about it before it was purchased. Was a huge sleeper type of a hit. The whole game was kinetically hyper and that made it hilarious and fun!

Yup, picked it up on a whim in late 1993 and it (along with Gunstar Heroes, Shinobi III, Secret of Mana, and Mario all-Stars took that year out with a bang! 1993, 1996, and 1998-01 were all are extremely good years for gaming for me in my younger years.

ROCKET KNIGHT ADVENTURES IS THE BEST SEGA GAME BY FAR. It's the Tupac of games. Literally have it on my phone emulated. This is one of the VERY few games I rented(by accident, hadn't heard of it), and later had my parents buy it. Remember going to toys"r"us and grabbing that little paper you turn in front desk for the game. Wow. Memories. I'm getting old...

Shadowrun, Starflight and to a lesser extent, Zombies Ate my Neighbors, would all make the list for me. Good ports of Pirates! Gold and Starflight that are actually worth playing even if you own the PC version already is quite impressive.
Wouldn't be difficult at all to turn a top 13 into a top 50 for the Genesis (making the list wouldn't be more difficult at least) and not have any of the titles of less than top tier quality padding out the list.

5:47 - Hey so heads up, you're planet wasn't really reduced to a desert in PS4. Motavia was the desert planet in Phantasy Star 1. The Palmarians (From Palma the earth-like planet) terraformed it before Phantasy Star 2 with the aid of a central computer named Mother Brain. Mother Brain is the main antagonist in the game and destroys Palma in that game. So after the destruction of Palma the Algol starsystem goes into decline, they lose a lot of tech and space travel, and Motavia starts becoming arid again without Mother Brain controlling the terraforming anymore.
Phantasy Star games are absolutely crazy in scope. Kinda wish Sega would abandon the PSO model and make proper PStar RPGs again

@@ChibiKami Agreed, I remember playing the original on the Master System, and after playing a good while on Palma was surprised that you not only had Motavia(desert planet) but Dezoris (ice planet) as well.
My favorite is actually Ristar. It isn't nostalgia, either, I'm younger than the SEGA Genesis

those weekends when my best friend and I would get to rent a video game and have a sleepover were so much fun. we would always get a 2 player simultaneous game. Gunstar Heroes and Streets of Rage 2 were all timers for us

Long ago I bought that game but I just couldn't like it (and I really tried). I'm glad some one out there has love for DnD: WoES.
I loved that game, played it as a little kid and replayed it as an adult, captivated by the gameplay as a kid.
Yes, WotES was a fun game. Another D&D gem on the TG16 with similar gameplay that came out around the same time was Order of the Griffon.
Same, that banging soundtrack by Frank Klepaki and the sense of adventure it gave me as a kid has made it my fave mega drive game of all time
@@lancercncs1822 I just downloaded Order Of The Griffon for TG16 and the game look messed up.. you can't see numbers when hitting enemies or when receiving damage.. a flashing bar appears where the numbers should be.

Revenge of Shinobi, that is the predecessor o Shinobi 3, also had a life bar.
The immediate precursor to Shinobi 3 was Shadow Dancer, which had one-hit kills.
It is also the best Shinobi game on Genesis.
Finally the Thunderforce series gets some love. I started with 3 and it was fun, but 4 was a great shoot em up!

It didn't have a big ad campaign that I remember, probably an ad in gamepro or something. Gunstar Heroes is easily the best Genesis game I ever played.

@@Mechakick SC1 AND 2 are both the bee's knees. They're is an open source SC2 project that's free to download and play and has been really well rounded out for about a decade or so. Go look for The Ur-Quan Masters!
Master of Monsters is a very underrated Genesis game. Some of the best music ever and an amazing strategy game. I still play it today to see all the monster upgrades. :)
i never liked the game, but mostly because i played dark wizard for sega cd first, and dark wizard is like master of monsters but like...improved in every single way
