- 3DO Optical Drive Emulator | MNEMO Installation Tutorial for a GoldStar 3DO | Retro Renew
In today's episode of Retro Renew, I take a closer look at the 3DO Home Console. More specifically the Goldstar variant. As these CD based consoles age, their mechanical CD drives will begin to inevitably fail. To remedy that, and ensure that this console has many years of life, I will be installing an Optical Drive Emulator, or ODE, inside the 3DO to replace the CD drive unit. This particular ODE is from a company named MNEMO. I will go over a brief history of the 3DO as well as the company Goldstar and show you how to install the ODE into the 3DO system. I am really excited to install this inside my broken Goldstar 3DO console, so sit back, relax, and let’s dive right in!
So here's what you will find in this video:
► 0:00 Intro
► 1:00 3DO and Goldstar History Lesson

The PVM Appears! I keep wanting to do this mod, but have procrastinated forever. I've got a soft spot for this wacky console.
Haha, it’s never too late bud! It definitely screams 90’s wackiness! And I love it! Thanks again for the PVM, loving every minute of it!
one of my favorite things about your channel is how thorough and educational your videos are. There's tons of work and time put into these videos and it shows.
Thank you itzmikie! That means a lot! I’m so glad you’re enjoying the channel and appreciate the comment! Cheers!
I remember playing the 3DO at a local video game store. I didn't know a single kid that had one. I didn't even think twice about asking my parents for it
Haha nice! Same here, don’t know anyone personally who owned one of these.
If I saw one at the game store, I’m sure I would’ve have wanted one too! Then when my parents saw the price tag, I would have been promptly turned down, haha! Cheers Tom!
Hey! Thanks for your videos they are great and really relaxing. I watch them mostly at night before bedtime. Keep up the good work!
You’re most welcome Darenn! So glad you are enjoying the channel and find it relaxing. I am very glad to hear that. Cheers buddy!
Mesmerized by your contents, editing and, hands down, the best intro on UA-cam! I recently turned my Gameboy DMG into a beast, thanks for the inspiration and tips Tito!
You are most welcome Fara! And thank you so much for the kind words! I really do appreciate it! I’m so glad your DMG came out awesome! Cheers Fara!!
Awesome video 👍🏻 This was my first opportunity to see a goldstar get done. I’m 41 and have had my FZ-1 since my mother bought it for me when I was 14. My mother passed away in 2011 and the laser in my FZ-1 failed recently. I purchased the MNEMO unit, and a RGB mod from Greece. The MNEMO ODE was waaay easier than the RGB mod, but in the end, all was a success. I really enjoy mine, and I’m happy to see people still creating videos on 3DO consoles. Keep up the good work man!
Just purchased the same 3DO and mod kit. Always liked the 3DO, so this was a no brainer for me.
Love this console. When I was at iniversity in the mid-nineties one of my neighbours let me borrower his Panasonic FZ-1 for about a year. Spent many hours playing Need for Speed, Return Fire and Wing Commander 3 with my friends. It was a seriously underrated console. When I have a bit more space I will definitely be adding one to my collection, this looks like an essential mod!
Didn't know this existed for turn 3do. Great way to preserve gaming history
Pretty cool, Tito. I’ve never seen this console and it’s good that you have options to enhance it. Love that PVM, beats consumer CRT big time! Cheers man
Thank you Jesus! Totally agree bud! Even though it’s a pretty niche console, I’m glad folks are making mods for it! Cheers dude!
Awesome run down of the install. Seems super simple. I have the FZ-1 so I'll probably grab that one. Now to figure out an RGB option.
It’s very simple, I’m sure the FZ-1 will install in a similar fashion. The s-video is pretty good, but RGb would be great! Cheers buddy!
Well I've never heard of this thing but I like your content so much, the guys website looks like it was made in the 90's
"that you've never heard of."
Wut. It's not like it's an Epoch Cassette Vision or a Nuon or something. These sold well.
I was the most popular kid back when I was a teenager, part of the school curriculum, I had to do a 2 week work experience. I came across a games store that had all the variants of the 3DO, and other gaming console. While working there I had the best time of my life, playing with all the new consoles and games. Before I knew it, the 2 weeks was up :( fast forward a few years I asked for a full time job there :) They were more than happy to take me onboard, I was young back in the mid 90's and this was my dream job, all my mates was so envy of me. I had the opportunity to play all the latest and greatest console and games.
That’s awesome dude! I’m glad you were able to get a job that you are passionate about! That’s fantastic! That would have been very cool to be able to play these back in the day! Cheers buddy, thank you for sharing your experience!!
And thanks for the great shot out.
You’re most welcome bud!
Never owned a 3DO console, find it very interesting platform.
Awesome way to play... 😎
Thank you dude! It’s definitely a unique console! Cheers and happy New Years
Always liked the look of the goldstar 3do, especially the controller. I heard that it had more compatibility problems than the others though
That’s true, I’ve heard that as well. I think it was only a few games. But totally agree, I think it looks pretty slick! Cheers Mark!
I like how there's a tutorial for purchasing lol. Very thorough. great video as always. was wondering what the L in LG stood for.
Haha, I thought that the purchase process was confusing enough to warrant its own tutorial😅.
Great question, the L stands for Lucky for when GoldStar merged with Lucky Chemical. Cheers buddy!
Good video. I have this board on my FZ-1. The board works flawlessly on single disc games but sometimes has issue with disc swaps on multi disc games.
That intro does not get old
Thanks Colby! I’m glad you are enjoying it! Cheers!
I owned an FZ1 3DO back in 1995 when its price got lowered to $400. I sold it in 1998. I regret doing so, 5 years ago about another one for only $80, and its CD drive still works! The most Rare 3DO is the LG 3DO Alive II, only released in South Korea.
Nice RGS! That’s awesome that you had one so early! Yeah the alive 2 is like the hold grail! I love how it looks like a smoother/rounder PlayStation. Cheers buddy!
I love my 3DO, and play it quite often. I own a Panasonic model.
I got mine second hand, and got it with a Goldstar controller, and a Panasonic controller.
That’s awesome! Thank you for sharing! Which controller do you prefer? The GoldStar or the Panasonic?
@@MachoNachoProductions I really prefer the Panasonic, it's smaller and more comfortable in the hands. The Goldstar feels awkward being so large in the hands, while as thin as it is. I also don't like the circular stop & play buttons of the Goldstar controller.
Got it! Thanks for letting me know! May need to pick up a Panasonic controller now!
WOW!! YOU HAVE A 3DO!!! YOU ARE THE BEST!! (and too Artemio Urbina lol XD)
Thank you dude!
I always want nachos after watching your intro lol
😁
Impresionante
Thank you Jesus Ojeda!
Es increíble. Una pena por el lector de discos pero era un cambio necesario para usar la consola.
BTW on your IG you should post pics of your computing station! Looks like two Thunderbolt displays on a tall pole but still want to see!
Great obscure mod, I'm surprised this was actually engineered due to the lack of popularity but fair play. Great content Tito, keep it up.
Thanks Ben! Will do!!
Totally agree! I’m so happy someone decided to design this. It was probably more of a passion project since, like you said, this was not a very popular console! Cheers buddy!!
This makes me think of that Panasonic laser disc player like in AVGN
Oh man! I really want a laserdisc player! Been eyeing the CLD-A100 which had an expansion port for a Sega Genesis and turbrgrafx modules. Is that that one AVGN looked at?
Great video! im still waiting for a good ps1 ode, but my favorite so far is the GCLoader for the GameCube. you should definitely check it out if you haven't already.
I definitely will! I really want the ps1 ode and hd mod! Will do it very soon! I hear great things about the GCLoader too! I’m glad all these are coming out! Cheers buddy!
@@MachoNachoProductions I got the XStation for the PS1 but I've missed both sales for the PS1Digital. They go super fast. Now to wait another 3-4 weeks for the next batch. =(
I’m waiting with you buddy! Hopefully we can get in the next batch! Best of luck to us both Ariel! Cheers!
Looks like the order page has changed and instead of money values there are now Bitcoin (BTC) and ETH values? I have no idea what ETH stands for.
Awesome, I like what ODE can do for old system, I've got for my main Gamecube (the great GC Loader PnP) and my Dreamcast (a GD Emu Clone) and both work great, I hesitate to buy a MODE for my Japanese Sega Saturn V2 and I hope than a Playstation 2 Slim ODE is going to be sell one day !
I still fascinate by the 3DO project, even this don't work, the idea off not a single system but a franchise system was a thing to try. Of course this make both the system over price because company try to make money with the sell of the console and not with the sell of the game, but nice try 3DO, maybe one day I going to buy one and install this MNEMO ODE ^^ !
Great stuff, can't wait for the next video ^^ !
Thank you Ace Bunny! I can’t wait to get some ODEs for my other consoles! I like the idea of an ODE for the PS2 slim. That would be so cool! Cheers Ace!!
I've never been a big fan of odes. Using the actual disks is part of the experience for me. I can appreciate the practicalities of them though, especially with dying drives.
I have the same goldstar 3do as you do.. I dont see an internal usb version for the goldstar 3do on the website.
I think you have to request it during the ordering process.
Would love to see one of these done on a Saturn or Dreamcast, it’s something I really want to do some day
Hey Erik! I am planning on doing some awesome Dreamcast stuff soon! Stay tuned buddy! Cheers and happy new year!
There's a couple options for the Sega Saturn and Dreamcast. I currently have a TerraOnion MODE in both of mine. They're really easy to install and have pretty frequent firmware updates. Check them out if you get a chance. They're a little on the expensive side though, but they are really well made.
Totally! Been looking at them for a while. Love the Saturn and Dreamcast!
Hi there I got my 3DO usb loader recently and the acitivation code. However on my 3DO FZ-1 when I select iso it says 'UNKNOWN BIOS' ?? any ideas i'm totally confused. Help please
Know where I can fiind a 3D printed case for this mod?
7:29 seems like you don't wear pants when doing your mods, good video anyway haha
Haha, yeah I wear shorts.
Use to own a gold star brand crt back in the day. So LG is modern them. 😌👌
Yep! It’s a cool bit of history. Cheers!
Hello, where we can buy this mod? I m looking for a link to your webshop to buy it. Please help!
Will this mod work on Japanese 3DO’s as well? NTSC-J?
In my life of 33 years I've never seen a 3do or played one. But I have been researching recently how to install optical drive into PS1 I really want to get Dreamcast or Sega Saturn the same optical drive will work for either of them. The price for the OD for the 3Do seems great compared to the prices I've seen for other consoles
That’s very true. The terraonion is so expensive, but like you said it works for both the Dreamcast and the Saturn. When you put it that way the 3do ode does seem like a better deal, haha! Cheers buddy!!
Out of curiosity why is the Goldstar version your favorite? The two people I know who are really into the 3do don't seem to think too fondly of it, so I'm interested in hearing what appeals to you about it!
That’s a great question! I kinda like it since it’s the only one made by a Korean company. All the other ones are Japanese. I think it’s pretty cool that it’s a console from the Korean company Goldstar which is LG. As far as quality is concerned, I think it’s pretty good. It may not be as reliable as the Panasonic models but I still found to to be pretty good. I hope that answers your question. Cheers!
Ultra Street Fighter and Road Rash are brilliant ports.
So true! Cheers Yans!
Still one of my favorite systems. Still got my fz1 with mnemo's mod and blackdog's rgb mod.
Nice dude! I’m thinking of getting the RGB mod, would you say it’s worth it? Cheers!
Yes It is worth it. When I got mine I got it with the 9 pin sega megadrive socket, and the rad2x so It doubles the resolution. Also have a winter project in the works.....a cast aluminum case (we will see how that works out)
Whoa dude that sounds awesome! Will you be selling the aluminum case?
It is going to be a one off, but if there is enough intrest I might throw a couple on ebay. The bad part about it is ....It will be sand casted and getting to a mirror finish will be loads of work.
Ah got it. Sounds like a really cool project though!
' Lucky Chemical ' sounds like something a DC villain would be behind.
Or something out of "Breaking bad" :)
Mnemo...read it like the name of the movie johnny Mnemonic
Haha, true!
It would be interesting if you could 3d print some kind of hinge and hot glue it between the case and the DVD Door. Might make it easier to get to the usb stick. Without ruining the original look of the device.
Great video! I have one of his ODE's installed in my Panasonic FZ1. I went whole hog and got the Citrus3000psi RGB mod with a 240p/480i toggle switch. Full recap, custom Retro Access scart cable, 500gb USB HD... I may as well as lit all that money on fire. Truly an awful library of games. It's still pretty cool to explore them though. 3DO was a rich man's console and I didn't know a single kid who had one. I remember seeing demos of it in some stores and being pretty impressed. Angry Nintendo Nerd ignited my nostalgia for it several years ago and here we are. Now I too can play Plumbers Don't Wear Ties. In RGB at 240p! Is this winning?😭
Haha! Sounds like winning to me Gara! I agree, it’s library isn’t the best, but like you said it’s fun to explore and experience these old games. They definitely evoke nostalgia for the 90s. I really want to do an RGB mod. Would you say it’s worth It? Cheers!
@@MachoNachoProductions I'd say it's worth doing the mod. A heck of a lot went into the mod to get RGB and that toggle once only available on a few Japanese system variants. Being able to play games in 240p is much preferred. 240p also scales a heck of a lot better compared to the default 480i.
If I recall it was Citrus3000psi's worst selling mod by far. He moved so few units that he ultimately stopped offering them and open-sourced it. Another store is selling them now. I'll link it at the bottom. I'm sure there must be dozens of owners all over the world!
retrogamerstuff.com/collections/best-sellers/products/3do-rgb
Haha! Awesome, I’ll have to pick one up before it goes away forever! Thanks for the link!
Hmmm it seems it's time to buy a new console for my collection!
Haha do it dude!
can the 3D0 goldstar play burnt games
Another great video!
However, did you not think it was necessary, since you already had it open, to do a nice cleaning of all the interior PCBs and plastics? I am a bit biased b/c I love watching retro consoles get cleaned :)
Thanks TJ! I agree, I may have to open the whole thing up and give it a deep clean. It’s a little dusty in the inside but other than that a relatively nice and clean example of a 3DO! Cheers bud!
OK so Gold Star - I actually knew you were talking about 3DO immediately and LG/Gold Star as I found a cream colored CRT from at least the 80s (only VHF /UHF input) on the side of the road. Don't think it works but was gonna make a fish tank or something with it lol. Sadly, my house caught on fire 2 days ago, and I don't know what's left of that tiny piece of history (maybe 12 inch screen)
Very sorry to hear about your house. I hope things work out for you soon buddy!
That would be a really cool idea, to turn an old crt tv into a fish tank, very creative!
Will a controller from a real 3do work on the goldstar?
have you heard of the panasonic gamecube? its fricking awesome!
I have! It’s so cool! I love the way it looks and that it’s also a DVD player! Perhaps one day I can get my hands on one! Cheers buddy!
@@MachoNachoProductions yeah ive been keeping an eye out to get one!
We’ll get one, one day!
Mnemo web has no longer an active link to the How to buy section :(
Is there a particular reason you used the top USB slot? It just freaks me out that the USB drive is hanging like that... BTW, awesome video like always.
That’s a great question! You actually need to use the top one, it was by design since components on the pcb would interfere with the usb. Great observation, I should have mentioned that in the video. Cheers Erik!
Hot glue? I just used blu tac with mine lol
Mnemo is a strange guy but he is legit, if you pay as gift, he WILL send you the ode
P.s are you going to do the 3DORGB mod?
Man, that’s way better than hot glue! Wish I thought of that! I am definitely planning on rgb modding it at some point! I really need to invest in a OSSC! Cheers Guyver!
I made the request for the page you recommended but I still haven't received any response and I already made the payment, it's already a week I could do
According to the website it takes 10-25 days to receive. I don’t think I ever got a email from him.
@@MachoNachoProductions ok well then I do not have to receive any mail confirming that my order is on its way that is my question since I only made the payment but they did not answer me that is what intrigues me thanks for the reply
it's now $280 for the FZ-1 version 😭
Went to go check this Mod out, and the guy is only accepting BTC as payment. Conversion rates applied, about 300 USD now. A little too sketch for my liking.
i think maybe just angry gmer and you have a 3DO jajajajaja XD
cheers Tito!!
Haha, yeah these things were not popular at all. Lol! Cheers bud!
only problem with this is you cant use the original game cds/dvds, someone needs to come up with a electronic mod device or software to read all game discs for use on a gaming pc instead of consols.
Another great video Tito, thanks for the consistent content!
While I understand this is the only true ODE for the 3DO, I do recommend you stay far away from MNEMO for your future projects. A major, major con that you overlooked in the video is that it *may* have a time bomb on it requiring you to make consistent firmware updates or it will brick. If bychance he stops releasing firmware before this is patched out, or he gets hit by a bus or something, it's only a matter of time before this thing is useless. Please take a look at www.retrorgb.com/usb-gdrom-self-brick-timer.html for info on this.
MNEMO has a history of problematic behavior beyond this as well. Take a look at www.thedreamcastjunkyard.co.uk/2016/03/stone-age-gamer-drops-usb-gdrom.html if you've got the time. Luckily, their other product is a Dreamcast ODE, and with the availability and compatibility of GDEMU clones and the Terraonion MODE, there's really no reason to consider MNEMO for that.
See ya next week!
You’re most welcome Gooch! Glad you’re enjoying the content!
Thank you for the heads up, I had no idea that it could be bricked in he future. If that happens I will definitely report it! Kinda weird to design that into the product.
Thanks again dude, and see you next week!
@@MachoNachoProductions It's hard to tell even from the conversation Bob posted, honestly. It could mean that there was never a time bomb implemented in the first place, but it could also mean that he's not willing to remove the time bomb from the firmware. Concise answers and a language barrier keep us from having a clear answer, but I'm thinking the 3DO ODE doesn't actually have this "function." I believe his initial goal with the time bomb was for antipiracy, which is understandable, but not mentioning this at all on his sales page is very anti-consumer. Definitely keep an eye on it though!
Thanks again for the heads up. It is very interesting. I’ll definitely be sure to report any issues with this kit if I run into any. Cheers Gooch!
the 3do iso loader doesn't have a time bomb
I think the 3DO is pretty cool, but the VCR/consumer electronics model doesn't work for video games.
To be competitive you need to subsidize the cost of the machine with software sales. Samsung, Sanyo, Panasonic, they wouldn't see another penny after you buy your 3DO. Hence the outrageous cost of the unit.
I do think the games are unfairly maligned, this is a console with some legitimate hidden gems. I personally really like Immercenary. It's a clunky but very interesting FPS/RPG with an open world.
Fantastic points justrtm! Totally agree! I think the 3DO has gotten a lot of flack, but as you stated it certainly does have some hidden gems!! Thank you for the comment dude! Cheers!
Never heard of? I owned one.
Awesome! Which variant do you have?
Mnemonic is pronounced "Knee Ma Nick" so Mnemo is probably supposed to be pronounced Nemo. :)
Haha, makes sense! Great movie reference too! Cheers buddy!
Wow! This EDO costs $350 bucks now WTH. Not worth it lol. He needs to adjust his prices as I think his BTC prices haven’t been adjusted in a long while.
Lol yeah, it like tripled in price. I’ll still bookmark if the price ever drops at least closer to what it was a year ago.
WTF? I thought this was $90. He wants .007 Bitcoin for it. Over $400. What happened to the Paypal option?
이모델은 한국에서만 발매한 3DO제품입니다
Seller now only accepts Bitcoin as payment :-(
He now only accepts payments via Bitcoin and shipping is paid for with USD.
"Never heard of" if you are under 30...
Haha true, younger folks most definitely will not know what it is. That means I’m getting old, haha! Cheers Francisco!
@@MachoNachoProductions :D
Yeah never heard of it and I'm 26
Yep. I’m 34 and remember going into Best Buy and playing the 3DO Kiosk they had set up :D
Nice! I’m sure it would have been very tempting get one back then, although the price tag would have made it infeasible for me. Crazy how expensive they were. Cheers buddy, and thank you for sharing!
And I have the only non compatible model... great
Oh man, sorry to hear that bud. Luckily it’s only a few games that are non compatible. Most of the good one work on all 3DOs. Cheers Vincent!!
@@MachoNachoProductions Thank you! I read that it was not compatible with GDO-202 that I own. I hope they'll find a solution in the future, I definitely would play 3DO hidden gems. I only have Road Rash and Need for speed. Great games though.
Oh man, I didn’t realize you had a 202. Those are apparently pretty rare (UK Variant?). It’s really cool that you have one! I hope MNEMO can figure out a way to make it work for yours. Fingers crossed! Cheers Vincent!
@@MachoNachoProductions I live in France so maybe it's the same model as UK
Nice!
im 9 months late but you can only pay with btc now :(
Yeah, and over $400 in BTC he wants for one of these. Insanity.
Well, you can just shorten the title by just saying installing a mod kit inside the 3DO ,as the long title become a bit misleading.
Misleading, how so johneygd? Definitely appreciate the feedback. Cheers!
@@MachoNachoProductions well i guess it’s because i cannot read the full title untill i click on it ,haha.
Haha, no worries dude!
@@MachoNachoProductions Yes it is hard to tell this video is actually about an ODE mod because of the length of the title. I did not know until clicking.
Also, starting with the $700 is misleading as that is the current inflation rate. This will not be relevant when people find this video 5 years from now.
The title is very clickbaity, however given how the UA-cam algorithm works, I think the naysayers should give the title of this video (and any other possible clickbait titles) a pass as your content is absolutely fantastic and you deserve to have a large channel with many subs and likes because your quality is high and it’s a shame UA-cam algorithm punishes thoughtful content in favor of mass produced clickbait content.
You gotta do what you gotta do to get people in the front door and I respect that and I hope you continue to make such amazing content!!
Thanks hobblinharry!
I agree that I did try to make the title as enticing as possible (as much as one can for a 3DO console video), but I also tried not to mislead people. I want to make sure I convey all information that is in the title within the video. Also agree that $700 5 years from now will be quite different nominally as that is how inflation and time value of money works. I appreciate the feedback and constructive criticism deeply! And I am extremely happy you are enjoying the content! Again, thank you!! Cheers!
The fact that the engineer behind these now only accepts bitcoin, and those totals are going over 400$+ in USD is enough to stop me from doing this now, and it's very sad.
The 3DO and its load times are unbearable.
The memory storage was enough for one game alone Star Control II.
Totally agree! Using my working 3DO, the load times were quite lengthy! I feel like the ODE improves them slightly! And other plus for the kit! Cheers dude!
Now only accepts bitcoin - what a mistake on his part
Someone else needs to make these - hoipefully Terraonion will get on board because their dreamcast, saturn and PSX ODEs are awesome
Both of nmemo and 3doode parasitizes on users. Chinese guys will release own pcb for $5 and expensive trash will be forgotten
Who could pay 250 bucks for. this shit, when the pico based ode costo 40$ on aliexpress.
Clickbait titles suck. It's just a 3DO. Do you really think people who are interested in console mods don't know these things?
it's in the title you killjoy.
I’m sure there are some folks that might not. It’s not a very well known/common console. Thank you for the comment adilator! Cheers!
