In today’s episode of Retro Renew, I show you the latest progress on a mod I’ve been working on for some time now. My friends Kyle and Helder have combined forces to help make the last mod your Game Boy Advance will ever need! It has been dubbed The Thicc Boi SP, an incredible modification that incorporates everything you could ever want in your Game Boy Advance Console! Important! Please read! There are a number of peripherals that utilize the side holes for grip on the gba sp and original gba. Please consider revising the bottom shell to include those hole grooves for the peripherals. Things like the gba wireless connector or other japanese add ons won't work if you don't modify the case you made for the injection molding. Just an FYI.

Also, the Official GC to GBA cables need those holes that clip. As a Gen 3 Pokémon player, FF Crystal Chonicles and Zelda 4-Swords player, it will effectively remove a GBA/player from a session.

I personally don't have a use for all of the other features in the thicc boy, but just having an SP with a wireless rechargeable battery and headphone jack is already a game changer

@@MachoNachoProductions I wish could do this but I would have an extremely hard time with the precise soldering required....
@@dboymax1 its actually really easy in comparison to soldering single wires aslong as u get it right next to the solder point and heat the solder up you should get it to make contact im excited about these type of mods because it makes life easier the fear i always have is getting it way too hot and melting the ribbon but ive done a few and havent had an issue yet! seems kinda hard to melt them honestly gotta hold it directly on the ribbon for a second or 2 to make any damage happen
i would prefer to have a GBA SP with non rechargeable batteries. right now the only option is installing a brighter screen in a GBA regular model, but the design is simply not as good as the GBA SP clam shell design. if there was an attachment that took 4 AA batteries to power the GBA SP that would be perfection.
Both of which are entirely doable without increasing the size.
Super excited that you are going to make this a mod kit that will be available for purchase. it would be awesome if the final bottom shell piece could incorporate the two little notches of the original SP to allow for wireless link adaptor and Gamecube link cable functionality to be maintained. Can't wait to see this further develop. Keep up the good work!

Yes, GameCube link cable is a necessity, I get so much mileage from that with Pokémon, Sonic, the GBA Player...

This looks great, I hope you'll be offering different color choices for the shell, I have a transparent violet purple shell from retro game repair shop and it'd be cool if I could get a color that either matches or at least compliments it well -- Looking forward to the kickstarter ♥
Yep, we’re still trying to figure out colors. They may be limited due to the cost and the minimum order quantity we would need for each color. I will keep everyone posted on this

Yes I agree. Colours is my main question so it all matches us. Incredible work everyone involved. I imagine it feels a bit like a dmg in the hands.
Or maybe Boxy Pixel could get involved and make a cool aluminum shell.
My SP shell is shot anyway, I was just planning on doing a full paint job using what’s left over from my car’s touch up paint. A metallic black, should look cool

For me…I’d remove the headphone jack, usbc charging, give it a smaller battery & see you f I could cram it into a regular shell

@@coreyellis5281 you can actually do this. in one of the iterations we did we fit the bluetooth module (with some trimming) into the factory shell, but its a hog for power, and required some super creative wire routing

Check out my older videos on early versions of the thicc boi. I did on with just Bluetooth and wireless charging and it was thinner

As a quick note, it’s TRRS, not TRSS. Tip Ring Ring Sleeve. There can only be one tip and one sleeve; it’s the number of rings that’s variable (from 0 to 2, typically). Not sure of that was just a misspeak a misunderstanding.
Probably a misunderstanding. He says TRS has 2 rings, and "TRSS" has 3 rings. Obviously referring to the plastic isolators in-between each section, but it wouldn't make sense to call those "rings" when the standard already has a different component of that name.

I am 100% down to support you for the Thicc Boi! Whenever you have a Kickstarter I'll be there day one! Amazing work as always! I work a lot and I always have my handhelds with me, and to have a battery that'll last damn near 24 hours (I use my IPS screen on default to two notches darker) would be a life saver!

I've been hoping someone would do something like this.
The only thing I can think of that would count as a major improvement instead of a minor one would be to figure out a custom top so a larger screen could fit, but there's not much space left for that. Maybe a custom metal shell for the top?
OMG, this video production rivals a lot of the 10 million sub channels, you gotta keep going, truly amazing, btw and I loved the mod.
I've said this once and I'll say it again: amazing to see how much your channel's grown since I first subbed. This is definitely something that appeals to me, even if I wouldn't be able to afford it at the moment. Oh well, there's always the future :P

YOO i've been lurking and following your content for a while now. Did your wireless charging mod and v2 screen installs and have been loving them. very interested in your kit and very excited for your release. Props to your 3d modeler for the shell. Learned solidworks in school and it makes me realize how much time you have to put towards fine tuning your dimensions.

Nearly because now I think the L & R button are too short with the thicc boi install 😅. It can be a good idea to custom the trigger and make them longer to fit the new case.
My SP need mod and I thinking to make it THICC BOI now 😅, so I'm going to wait the crowdfunding start 👍.

i am very interest in this. this is great!!!! i would love to see a hinge-less version in the future. This could help portability with moving the board to the top and keeping the battery and cart port in the bottom. size would be close to a GB pocket.

That's something I would really want! more battery and USB-C would help me a lot! (I made trips too long, and no place to recharge at all times, so, it could be a great economy of time, haha)
Yep, the usb-c makes the sp more versatile since it can be charged many different ways

Love helder's products! I've purchased every amp he's released for the Gameboy and DS and they work great! If you guys can get the Bluetooth lag fixed I'll definitely back the project.
We’re hoping to find one with less lag. The current module is actually pretty good but because it is converting analog to digital, there may be now way to completely eliminate it.

I love this, I wonder if you could do everything but the larger battery and fit it into a regular shell (or one a few mm thicker) with maybe a newer better battery that fits into old space, I think this is genius especially that board holding everything in one tidy package and gotta love a custom flat flex, Way to Go Tito!!

Awesome mod, it looks like what i always wanted! A way to play for extended times, not the poor 3 to 4 hours i can get with the stock battery. As a kind of critique, I think you should consider a circuit to be able to power off bluetooth, or at least a way to turn off that blinking light. I can imagine being in a plane with all lights off trying to play and then flashing everyone around with that bluetooth light. I think it would be nice if it can be turned off. otherwise, maybe some shell work to encase or direct the light in a specific direction, preferably downwards.

It's completely wild hearing you break down all the solder points you're attaching to. Makes me wonder just how much is going on in that motherboard that goes completely unused out of the box.

This looks awesome. I would love to see Helder do something similar for the Boxy Pixel Unhinged SP. The amount of wires routing through for the IPS screen, headphone jack, and USB-C port are a bit much.

This looks promising, I definitely will support it on whatever platform you choose to crowdsource. I’m usually weary of fine soldering, but the flat flex cables really look to make this mod more friendly.
I’ll be honest, I’d probably pay for just having the thicker base to have something more to grip onto! The other features are great though.
I LOVE that Zero is on the battery! The Megaman Zero games were by far my favorite games from the gba.
That battery is pretty much a dream come true. That's pretty crazy in terms of size compared to the original.

I love this, in all the possible ways, i surely buy your collab mod once it's finished, since i really love your videos i would love if you look up to ways of conserving the data on a cartridge for backup saves purposes and also transfer saves, since everyone i saw so far doesn't have your quality of info and obviously aesthethics.

Congrats on overcoming all the obstacles on this. I’d buy this if you made a thiccboy lite, with maybe a battery half that size and the back case thinned down accordingly.

I agree with some of the other comments. Even half of that enormous battery would be more than decent and if it helps to improve portability, I think I rather that trade off.

Rather interesting I was actually talking with him about this mod and that last part where you were trying to together the most power hungry combination possible I believe Tony hawk pro skater 2 for the GBA is actually notorious for draining the battery faster than almost any other GBA game I'd be interested to see how it handles
