I am an engineer and watching you troubleshoot your problems helps me find new perspectives when I am working. Totally different issues but your mindset can be applied to many applications. Thanks!
I can't ever thanks enough you sir, just about 3 weeks watching your videos, I had fixed all my 3 walking lawnmowers, 1 Muray tractor, 1chainsaw and 2 trimmers. Now I just have 1 more kid bike rider to do. Thanks abunch pro Mustie1. And I love your kindness and joyful laugh!!!
@Mark Schaffer You mean 5 up, right? ;-) The Kawasaki 500 Triple (H2s) were 5 up. Easy to get in N. Sometimes too easy! I never had a problem with that, though. Never knew why they would do that with something ridden off road.
Who needs Peloton when you have an old kick start Suzuki? My favorite part of these videos is the Mustie laugh when an engine first fires up. Had to wait a long time to hear that this time. Second favorite part is playing with Lilly. Thanks for my new Sunday morning routine, Mustie...
Cool! Those winner laughs are always absolutely priceless. Fortunately they are not rare because usually Mustie1 brings everything back to live. Can't wait to watch him having even more fun driving than starting it. I simply love Lilly.
They ran when they were put away 5 years ago. Everything’s there. Just needs starter, battery, plastics, tires, chain, carb, and valve job. Also smokes and won’t stay running or go into 2nd gear. $800. No low ballers I know what I got. No tire kickers serious buyers only
yessssssssssssss! the maniacal cackle that is the MUSTIE TRADEMARK of a bike, car or motor COMING BACK to LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!! ITS ALIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Budget Buildz. Young Kid. No swearing and he laughs at himself like this guy. He's in N.C working on a Porsche he salvaged from a junkyard for 500bucks. Plus alot of stuff people don't want. The only one i've subscribed to, besides this guy.
I absolutely love both Mustie and Camarata. I will check out those other 2 while I am sitting at home like everyone else. These guys get me motivated and give me so many great ideas.
When you miss leg day at the gym ...." take 274 " , kick 11,597 and yes , M1 stands triumphant over his tea kettle on wheels ! You had to work for this one , nice work , you should be walking again in a few days lol.
Cool video my friend. I have the exact 86 lt 230!!! It was given to me not running. Gave her some TLC, and now its pretty much bullet/kid proof. Carbon build up on both valves, on mine was a major issue. Got rid of that.....now it smokes no more and starts with a half kik. Good job man.
Great video because of the challenge and adventure in getting that thing going again. I was really looking forward to it since you picked it up. Thanks and I hope to see more of it!
As I lurked outside the castle, from within I heard an engine come to life. Intermixed with the cacophony of gears and valves and spark induced explosions, I could just barely hear the mad chuckle of Dr. Mustie. Once again, a long dead creature had been brought back to life.
Also... That carb does NOT have a "choke". Instead it uses an 'enrichener' circuit. An enrichiner will ONLY work when the throttle is at idle position..... If you open the throttle-slide the vacuum is lost to the enrichener circuit hence reducing the additional fuel flow. (disabling the enrichener)
I just got my first quad, it was free don’t know much about them. After doing some research I found it’s a lt230. Found this video, it’s the first time iv ever watched any of your content. Watched the whole thing and I learned a lot. I can’t wait to check more of your stuff out!
Ahhh the old LT230s and LT80. I worked for one of the countries largest Suzuki dealers before the internet era. We had 22 phone lines and we sold parts and accessories over the phone (nationwide by ads in the back of dirt bike and atv magazines) by looking them up on hand micro fische parts breakdowns. I still have part numbers committed to memory for some common things...lol... left crankcase covers (axle and swing arm bearings start to go...chain flies off breaks the sprocket guard off), stators, gaskets, reverse lever and shifter seals.... you gave me flashbacks... hahah Best way to start these is stand on it like you are riding it, fold the right peg up and kick straight down.
one of my favorite people on youtube.... a must watch .... how he doesn't have millions of followers .... I don't know .... keep it up sir ... you educate and entertain
I told Mustie he is getting to old for kicking these bikes. Finally he admitted. He should have a younger assistant or only pick electric starter bikes. I admit that I am also too old for kicking.
I used to have 3 of these mid 80s Suzuki LT230s every one of them broke that side cover at some point when the chain would come off. There was supposed to be another bold in that cover where you were digging but it gets ripped off by the chain. I ended up buying new covers and making guards out of 1/8x1 flat bar. Solved that problem. The decompression was operated by a hand lever that was on the left hand bar and pointed up above the clutch lever. It was like a bicycle hand brake lever. I never used it but all of mine had it. Those are awesome quads. They go forever and got a ton of power. Great find and good job getting it back to life.
Same experience here - my dad took the engine to his shop and had the bolt hole welded up, cover repaired, and retapped. My decompression lever never worked properly, spent a lot of time pulling it up hills to push start it. Ended up selling it after a top-end rebuild didn't fix other problems it had.
Search wide, if you find the right deal, a shipping co can have it brought your way, they will want it containing no oil or fuel, but it might be reasonable cost, after jan.1 the supply/ demand ratio is best for finding stuff, less people looking, less people riding, of course, deals are all about timing, finding them & pouncing on them
I've not long started following Mustie 1, great video's, I know this is an older video but when we were on the farms and playing around with old seized engines we put diesel down plug holes, that seemed to work really well. That worked with both diesel and petrol ( gas) engines.
You're right, you need one of us along when you go picking in those unlimited trash runs to help you get the things in the truck, and help get them out too. But you Really need your 16 yr. old self to come back and kick them over!(I do too, many times have said "getting to old for this") but man when they 1st start! It makes it all worth it. I do it a bit different, 1st take off the air cleaner assembly so I'm not dragging in half decicated mouse bodies and usually look into the intake, look into the combustion chamber, then the valves. Use a shot of PB Blaster, then some light sewing machine oil in the jug. Get them freed up, then check for spark etc.. All adds up to the same thing though, and glad to see it come back, those were good motors, especially if you find them quit on someone before they beat the crap out of them.
I got a brand new '85 Quadsport when Suzuki first released it back in '84. That one looks like an '86 model. I'm a 3-wheeler devotee, BUT...I like the LT230 Quadsport. Always have. Come to think of it, the only 4-wheelers I've ever owned (in a sea of 3-wheelers and dirt bikes) were Suzukis....that '85 Quadsport, an '88 LT250R Quadracer, and an '88 LT500R Quadzilla.
just started watching but i think at least one of them will work.. those old suzukis are pretty bullet proof. However, the young child who knows not of engine oil and usually rides said quad is often the suzukis only natural predetaor
I’ve been looking for a side kicker LT230s for awhile, the chain eating the stator cover is a very common problem with these, you can find a good one on eBay cheap. Please do a restoration video, get it running, clean, paint, redo the plastics, make it really nice, as soon as I find one, I’ll do the same thing.
I bolted 2 alum plates to my left side swingarm spar, then bolted a MX bike chain guide to the plates, using spacers & washers to line up guide with chain ( it's not parallel to swingarm ) - now I'm confident that a pebble or stick won't derail my chain; & replace a worn out chain, you will get better performance & no worries about snapping.even if you have to put a new chain on old sprockets, it's still better
I got one of these exept its a 160 and adopted the quadrunner name its a beautiful machine still runs nice and strong currently having a issue with my drum brake partially engaged at all times but other than that had it for a year now and only had to replace a cdi box and solinoid but thats primarily because the guy i bougbt it off of made a mess of the harness and hooked up my brake indicator directly to the solinoid
For an old man, you are a beast hahaha. I already start feeling aching pain right off the bat when you pull the atv onto the stand. Let alone from the recap video when you are loading them onto the truck. And I'm 27.......sad Haha.
lol yeah, I got out of breath just watching him kick that engine over again and again. I'm 31 and I get out of breath sometimes kickstarting my old 2 stroke haha
i do hes a genius with small engines i know its not rocket science but still most people would have just junked it half way thru i started to watch him a few months ago when i was on a honda trail ct 70 kick a buddy of mine has 2 i wanna nab one off him
What you have there is a Suzuki LT230 Quad Sport. Possibly around a 1986 or earlier model. The manual version was the Quad Sport and the automatic was the Quad Runner which usually had an electric starter as well. There was also a 2 stroke version the Quad Racer. As long as you don't get the timing 180 degrees off you shouldn't have to much trouble getting it running providing the electrical system is ok. The one I had was identical to the one your working with and was an '86 model. It was near bullet proof mechanically and was reliable as can be. Seeing yours has brought back a lot of memories and if I could find another one I would snag it in an instant.
That video where he dropped a part inside the engine and was trying to fish it out - I found myself tilting my head from side to side, trying to see inside the engine.
I had an old girlfriend get mad at me at a movie when a girl with a low cut shirt appeared. I re-positioned myself about the same time and she thought I was trying to get a better look... My completely valid argument that it was physically impossible did not phase her.
Great motivation video you stuck through it till the end until that thing started running I was just as happy as you were. The anticipation at the end was great and for free you can't beat that
Man I loved this video. And wanted to help. I have this very 230 Quadsport got it when I was 12 years old I'm 36 now. Do your self a favor the next time you kick it throw a leg over stand on the left peg and kick straight down with your heal. Compression release goes upwards on the top left handlebar. As for the chain coming off and hitting the case there notorious for it. I still love mine. And I'll be honest I was laughing just a bit before you realized it was in reverse. But something was definitely causing it to bind up.
Peter here thanks for a great video ,just a word on the blue crate from past experience I’ve learnt if you Are going to stand on them it is best to put a piece of ply on top held down with a few Zippy ties makes them really strong keep safe thank you
I had a Suzuki LT230 Quad sport like that when I was a kid it was a fun machine the only issue I ever had with it was the rear axle bushings ware out and the chain pops off the sprocket destroying the cover right in front of the drive sprocket and I've learned that JB weld works real good to fix the busted cast aluminum cover
I have owned an 1986 Suzuki 230 Quadsport. I currently own 3 Suzuki 250 Quadsports. They have not changed much in 40 years. The following year after your bike was one of the firsts with electric start and reverse!
I Jesé what ever tape is available, if not twine or just let it bleed. A High school buddy made a big mistake, he used a vine, and leaf to create a clot ... poison Ivy!
@Mustie1, decompressor should be used just to move the piston past TDC. 1- use the kickstarter to bring the piston in compression 2- use decompressor and move piston slightly past TDC 3- kick it hard (without decompressor). This is a 230cc, so you might just kick it until it starts, (if you wear any sort of boot it would be much easier)
I really think mustie is the true definition of a handy man. he can fix anything from putting batteries in a tv remote, to fixing a fighter jet turbine engine
If there was ever a place that needs an electric starter that is the one! No wonder they shoved it to the curb. Still, just getting it to fire at all is more than most people are capable of today. Good job as usual.
realfoggy with everything I have done or broken multiple times, I think my family was wondering if I would live long enough to to get married... let a lone see my 52nd Birthday, but still going strong for now, and hopeful a long while more!

It wouldn’t be a Sunday afternoon without watching Mustie make something work again
afternoon already? I just woke up and its 7:42am sunday here lol
Somebody needs to check a clock, unless they live east of the USA... like Australia

Looks like Lilly the old girl still has some play in her. We will all miss her when she's gone but for now we get to enjoy watching you play with her.

This video made me smile twice. Once when it started and more so watching, Lilli play with that bottle. My black lab loves those things too.
My 230 was a two kick every time.. loved that thing should have never sold it.. Awesome video keep'em coming..
It's nice to see an old dog up and playing ! Oh and nice seeing lily play too ! Lol

Impressed with your perseverance in trying to get the 4 wheeler going, way to go!
Dang, him playing with his dog at 1:02:50 is so wholesome

I had an old girlfriend get mad at me at a movie when a girl with a low cut shirt appeared. I re-positioned myself about the same time and she thought I was trying to get a better look... My completely valid argument that it was physically impossible did not phase her.
Sadly I did the same thing lol 😂😂😂
I had my nose against my phone looking at the timing chain. Lol
SAMS
Great motivation video you stuck through it till the end until that thing started running I was just as happy as you were. The anticipation at the end was great and for free you can't beat that
You always find the best stuff!! I’m jealous
It only becomes the best stuff when the patience pays off.
But something was definitely causing it to bind up.
hey man, i just bought a 230 s... able to help me out by answering some questions?
I'm pretty sure you ment to say if you sit for a minute then you'll come back alive lol
Peter here thanks for a great video ,just a word on the blue crate from past experience I’ve learnt if you Are going to stand on them it is best to put a piece of ply on top held down with a few Zippy ties makes them really strong keep safe thank you
Yay, Lily! I love it when she visits. If there is a Lily Fan Club, then I want to join!!
Hi Mustie1 great video i loved your determination to get that engine running you just did not give up. I can`t wait to see the next part on it :)
Johnny G I had the same exact thing happen to me 230 quad sport and that’s exactly how I fixed mine. Lol so weird.
I have owned an 1986 Suzuki 230 Quadsport. I currently own 3 Suzuki 250 Quadsports. They have not changed much in 40 years. The following year after your bike was one of the firsts with electric start and reverse!
Real men don't need no stinkin' Band-Aids when they have blue painter's tape.
That's a Man-d-Aid
Gaffer tape works when you really should be having a stitches.
Maybe they should sell it in Walgreen's, what with the cost of american medical care.
@@GemmaLB As an electrician I would always use leckey tape and bog roll .Steve in Thailand.
I Jesé what ever tape is available, if not twine or just let it bleed. A High school buddy made a big mistake, he used a vine, and leaf to create a clot ... poison Ivy!
Super glue has been used in the past!
That was... GLORIOUS! And your fur baby was by your side!
I could feel my back going out watching the first part of the video.
@Mustie1, decompressor should be used just to move the piston past TDC.
1- use the kickstarter to bring the piston in compression
2- use decompressor and move piston slightly past TDC
3- kick it hard (without decompressor).
This is a 230cc, so you might just kick it until it starts, (if you wear any sort of boot it would be much easier)
Man so many trys it's alive I love the videos and your patience
Best ever excitement moment in youtube history... Dog watched Mustie1... and she wasn't impressed.... lol I loved the video man....
Boy for a minute there thought that thing was gonna whip you. You taught it who's boss. Good job
If your Dr orders a stress test show him this video.
or your EKG???????????????????
Just got done watching this. Would like to see more videos of this four wheeler being fixed and seeing it run.
I really think mustie is the true definition of a handy man. he can fix anything from putting batteries in a tv remote, to fixing a fighter jet turbine engine
You are finding treasures and living the dream.
So many kicks. Respect. You da man, Mustie.
boring video..
If there was ever a place that needs an electric starter that is the one! No wonder they shoved it to the curb. Still, just getting it to fire at all is more than most people are capable of today. Good job as usual.
My Lab likes the crunch those bottles make.
our cat goes BONKERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Smells like Victory? One of Mustie's best videos. Much appreciated.
I would love to know what lily is thinking watching him. When are we going home?? Why is he kicking this thing? Who is he talking to?
"my human is old. he will never climb that thing but he's trying."
Great video. You always laughing makes it fun to watch
am I the only one who heard the "just like the over 50 exam" at 29:04 ?
Yup I heard it and laughed because I'm not 50 yet.
Don’t worry, you’ll there
@@gettintheresafelywithpatf2869 Not looking forward to the procedure but making it to 50+ is an achievement that I'm looking forward to.
realfoggy with everything I have done or broken multiple times, I think my family was wondering if I would live long enough to to get married... let a lone see my 52nd Birthday, but still going strong for now, and hopeful a long while more!
Man, I'm 65 and still riding motorcycles and quad's !
