Once while hiking miles into the deep woods I came across a log hunting cabin on top of a small hill, good size like 10x20, but a little slumpy in the back, had a huge critter hole inside like 5gal bucket sized, mattress complete gone with just the rusty springs remaining -- oh and I was just guessing that it was hunting cabin because the stone fireplace had Joe and Fred 1929 inscribed into the stone mantle, heh it was teh gay20's. snort Anyway the best part was the builders didn't anticipate the river changing course over time - where it had now been digging into the hillside, you walk out the front door and there's like 3 to 4ft of earth before a 25ft nearly vertical drop to the stream. cool spot
The device on the left side of the old carb is a decel valve. There is a diaphragm under the cover that closes an idle circuit air passage when you shut the throttle at high speed. The purpose is to richen the mixture and reduce popping in the exhaust system under decel. The brass electrical device on the bowl is probably a heater that warms a fuel passage in cold weather. You could test that by applying 12v to it and see if it gets hot.
@@comethiburs2326 Such wear would introduce a vacuum leak and go a bit lean? because I was thinking that the original jets might have EPA influence where the aftermarket jets might not. He mentioned reading the jets but I never saw him do it. Anyway, if you combine a bit of wear induced vacuum leak with EPA influenced jets, then it might be a lean condition, most easily fixed by either drilling out the main jet a hair or richening the idle mixture screw a hair, which I never saw, or greasing the slide to seal leaks. But I would rather drill out the jet than install a new carb with no vacuum port for the fuel shutoff and other fitment issues.
As someone that has done my share of brake work, I'm telling you that if you want any longevity out of those brakes, you MUST put some kind of lube on the pins of the caliper. Sil-glyde is cheap and usually will stand up even if you submerge in water.
It's a yearly job on my motorbike ...the winter, rain and salt pretty much seize the pins solid come spring. I've used silicon grease, heavy duty grease and red rubber grease. They all work but I can only imagine the carnage if I used non at all.
I think for 36 bucks, SHIPPED, that was probably one of the best buys you could've made. You had a serious come up that one free pile with all the antique stuff (had that light box and other awesome stuff) but man that little 4x4 does the trick with that carb it sounded SO much better when you first started it on the stand, I was extremely impressed!! Great video, thing rides pretty nice at the end!
I did this on my four wheeler. It was a no brainer the whole carb was less than the carb rebuild kit from the dealer. works great. Mustie1 they do have low speed screws that have an extended shaft and a thumbwheel. Still not as easy as a side screw but ten times easier than stock.
Looks like the exact China carb I got for my Kawi 300, in that application, that little round plug you found in the bowl is a carb preheater. Thanks for the video as always!
@@MostlyInteresting it definitely could be! Everything I've seen says it's a pre heater, only meant to warm up the fuel bowl for cold starting. I ran the original on my quad for a year and roughly 50 hours, while cleaning the carb I found it but it had galvanically corroded to the aluminum carb and the spade sticking out of it snapped off. I disconnected the wiring harness and ran it even in the dead of winter in northeast PA and didn't really notice a difference. I keep it in a partially insulated garage so it's not usually less than 45° at it's coldest. I got a china replacement that looks identical to Mustie's a few years later and simply plugged it back in to the new carb but I had no reason to except to keep everything factory. 🤷♂️

The difference in cost from the stock carb to the aftermarket is extreme! You could buy three of them and store them on the shelf if there's ever any problems in the future. Good video Sir.
Manufacturer parts are crazy prices. Recently needed to replace a part on my car, it was no more than a very rudimentary pressed piece of metal (no moving parts) for the rear brakes. The manufacturer price was 600 Bucks, while the 'third party' part was about one fifth of that. Not sure what manufacturers are playing at other than greed - they would rather people replaced repairable cars so they make parts as stupidly expensive as possible. At least that's what it seems like.
I agree, much more economical to spend $50 every 3 years versus $600, SMH. WHile the aftermarket cheaper version may have a cheaper casting, in reality the original wasnt all that much better in the long run as it continually was a headache with yearly fiddling every time you used it. I'll take the cheaper aftermarket any day, proves its value ever day I dont have to fiddle with the damn thing, lol.
$700 for a crappy little Mikuni carb is more than I paid for a specialized Holley 4-barrel carb for my truck. There's no reason they should be charging that much for a little motorcycle carb.
@@gb1613 well, let's see.. it's specialized for only a few applications with several extra gizmos (heater, fuel valve and whatever), check. it's been on stock for a while and probably isnt made anymore, check. if it's still made, then it's on special order and it's hand made in japan anyway, check. Yeah, i see why that mikuni carb is expensive. the holley carb is versatile because it's NOT specialized by design... that means it's made in large volumes, which drives prices down.

The external battery is genius!!! I have 2 Honda atc's that both need batteries, I have access to very cheap batteries but hard to get one to fit the bike, this is what I will do! Cheers mustie!
Like the burnt out wreck in the forest, that's about how they end up. They are ran hard, put away wet and then run again into the ground. It's amazing to me how nice equipment is routinely trashed. I visit a motorcycle salvage yard once in a while and the amount of trashed, ruined, neglected bikes is astounding.
I did the same carb swap on my Vinson about a year ago and it is still working fine. I ride it 3 or 4 times a week. Summer or winter, it starts easy and runs great.
Hey Mustie 1, nice machine. The plating difference is zinc plating with yellow chromate conversion vs zinc plating with clear chromate conversion. I bought a knock off carb for my Sthil weed wacker and to this day it has outlasted and ran BETTER than the Zama original ever did. I have a feeling the EPA gets involved and the manufactures have to set them up too lean etc to meet emissions, but that's just a theory. You've given me inspiration to do some maintenance to my Yellow Polaris Sportsman twin 700 this spring. First thing I ever Bought new (2004) Thanks
It is a theory shared by a lot of small engine enthusiasts and is actually written down and enforced to the best of my knowledge; these EPA regulations to "save the planet". Most newer carbs lack fine tuning and have fixed jets to discourage modifying them to run richer, etc., etc.
I am sure that is true, certainly in Scotland where I am. My Honda GCV160 lawnmower engine ran too lean when I bought it and I changed the jet a couple of sizes up - works great now.
I have a 2003 Suzuki Eiger that had carb problems, similar to your symptoms, I removed it and thoroughly cleaned it, I also moved the throttle needle up about .020 in. That was 5 yrs ago, it is now 2023 and I have had no problems since. This is a. 400cc and throttle roll-on will spin tires in 1st or 2nd gear. Top speed is around 50 mph.
The small electrical device is a low wattage heater 15 to 30 watts to help with cold weather starting. There is usually a thermistor in line with it and shuts off as the engine warms up. But all you you have to do is put an inline switch to shut off the heater after 10 or 15 minuets of run time. You got it running though cool!

New carb is set up to use an electric enrichener valve. It is controlled by a temperature sensor. If you have a manual valve you do not need the sensor. I put the stock jets in the aftermarket carbs. I just got a cheap aftermarket carb for my Honda 450 Foreman and popped it on. Works really good. Only thing that I had a problem with was the mixture screw. The spring was very weak and it was missing the tiny O-ring. It kept backing out. I replaced the spring with the one out of the original carb and I had to buy the tiny O-Ring because I lost the one out of the original carb.
Some of those mini chainsaws that use batteries would be a good addition to your "emergency" stowage. As long as you keep charged batteries in with it. The one I have (a fairly cheap Amazon unit) is amazing. I can easily trim large diameter brush with it. Could even take down a good small tree. I still use my Stihl for larger jobs, but this thing is really handy! Amazed at how well it works. Would probably be good for on the trail when you don't feel like working hard with a hand saw.
Folding Corona saw....I keep one in each of my machines, along with a hatchet, small shovel and a fixed blade knife....I've used all of them at one time or another. The corona saw is a gnarly little cutter. Much better than the old Sierra saw

The mouse problem. Is most definitely the result of not having enough granny gowns in the neighborhood. I'm talking about the blue dresses with white spots. You get the count of those blue dresses with white spots up to where they're about three-quarters of the people you see walking around every day or wearing a dress, and you will no longer have a mouse problem. One of the side effects is though if you go to work in your garden you'll find a lot of hidden surprises so gloves are recommended. Have you figured it out yet?

I did the same thing...I picked up an 2012 Ariens riding mower that hadn't been used for years. It was $70 for carb kit, so I ordered an Amazon carb for $27 with filter, runs great so far!
I rebuilt the carb on my 2003 Yamaha Roadstar last year. It had the same problems and used a similar CV carb. I had gone thru it a couple of times over the last ten years with not real long lasting fix until last year when I replaced the decel valve which changed how it run completely. Now it starts and runs great and idles instantly . The brass electrical item you removed is a carb preheater unit.
Well that was fun! Now that you have a receiver, make yourself a Drop Down insert that can take a D Ring. Then you can run your winchline under and behind yourself and keep it centered to the machine if you ever need to winch yourself backwards. Thanks for sharing 🇨🇦
Just wanted to say thanks for all the small engine carb rebuild videos I've been watching many of your videos even a lot of your old videos from 5 & 6 years ago. I used to be really bad with carbs I'm slowly getting better with them thanks to your videos. Just like I'm currently working on a craftsman snow blower I got from the trash guy said the engine was locked up. I got it home pulled dipstick and it smelled of gas so right there I knew what happened to it. Pulled the spark plug and it was full of gas and pulled the cord and all the gas shot out of it. So I'm rebuilding the carb now and will change the oil and hopefully it will run on its own
With the exception of one bad fuel shutoff solenoid that I was planning to delete anyway, I have really good luck with aftermarket carbs. You may get a bad one here or there, and they may not last as long on some applications, but when the cost of the aftermarket is a fraction of the OEM, it really doesn't matter if you have to go through one or two of them. The money you save is well worth it. I will buy OEM if it is a show room machine, but there is no reason to on most applications, unless the OEM is inexpensive. The price of most OEM carbs is just unreasonable.
I have been watching your show for some time now and have learned more than I can put into words. Thank you for your hard work! BTW, I have an old used Kawasaki Bayou that has been sitting for years and this show has encouraged me to get it running.
i actually picked up a 2005 arcticcat 500m, which is the same engine as in your suzuki Mustie1. it had less than 300 miles and only about 75 hours on it! needed a new needle valve after running it for a couple hours, but it was my dream atv since high school and its basically brand new still! i absolutely love your videos and im sure this one will be no different. thank you for the awesome content!
Maybe it's been said, but I've found boiling a carb in vinegar gets out deposits nothing else can. I think the heat opens up passages just enough. I did it on an expensive carb for a john deere garden tractor. Found a hardened chuck of varnished gas in the pot when I was done. Worked great after.
Had a Vinson and actually loved the quad for a short time until it became perpetually problematic. I sold it and bought a honda foreman and it has been literally flawless for the past 10+ years I've owned. The Vinson's powerband is better but im old so the Foreman works just fine

The electrical part on the new carb is a carb heater to prevent icing on cold days. My Vstar 650 has them and when the go out, you know it. Below 40-45 degrees the carbs ice up really bad. I chased this problem for a while on mine. I took the air filter housing off after it stranded me and looked inside the tube between the filter housing and carbs. There was frost inside there and the temps where low 40's. Summer time on the Blue Ridge Parkway after a cold front and rain passing over Mt. Pisgah. It sucked, but I nursed the old girl home and replaced those little heaters. I've talked to people about them but no one seems to know exactly what controls them. I assume it's the same little module that controls the electric fuel pump. The carbs are down draft and sit up under the tank so at half tank the bike quits if the fuel pump isn't running.
Where I was at college, you could tell how good a weekend the local joy-riders/car thieves had by counting the burnt out cars dumped outside the village on a Monday morning!
I noticed the needle in the new one was way shorter than the old carb, I wonder if it’s adjustable, otherwise it looks to short to work properly. Anyway it did. Nice work 👍
Your wrenching is always fun Mustie, but I really enjoyed the last several minutes of you out in the woods on this wheeler. Maybe change up from wrenching and do a trail clean-up vid, maybe drag out some tools and bone out anything useable off the old burnt wheeler, just a day inna woods kinda thing.....
That was great never seen a carburetor so cheap but it works so use it and new to you got it going on service it and ready for another year of use great job Mustie but if it works Mustie can fix it thank you can't wait for next video thank you for sharing and your time.
It is a common problem that the rubber seal from that choke piston is worn out (or too hard) or the cable is not properly adjusted. So the engine is always running with a little extra fuel from the choke. The result is that the mixture is a little too rich and the engine died when idling.
Thanks Mustie for now I know I can buy a new carb for my '87 Yamaha Motofour (out of production). I was skeptical because the price was so low.Hope it works as well for me....
I did the same thing to my 1987 YFM350ERT. Wound up rehabbing the original unit, there were enough fitment issues that it wasn't worth the extra effort. But I was out a grand total of $35, so didn't feel too bad. Your experience may vary. My old blue monster runs like a champ now, FWIW.
Mustie, the "blind plug" you removed might be a electric carburetor heater. If you google this you'll find parts exactly looking like that. Prevents icing of the carb. Not sure if you need this or if it's more a motorbike issue.
$36 dollar knock off carburetor vs $700 OEM one. You can buy a new 36 dollar Carburetor each year for 18 years and still save money over the OEM one. Happy you got it working better and now can enjoy it more.
I’ve been running one of those aftermarket carbs on my 06 Kodiak 400 for several years now. It was much more of a bolt on and go for me compared to this one. Mine was pretty much an exact copy of the OEM Mikuni carb.
i had same kind of problem with my bike and after messing with multi carbs single carbs etc i did a valve adjustment and it solved the problem right away they was no gap at all in the rockers
I'm surprised you just didn't buy a rebuild kit and give the old carb a good cleaning. I had a Honda Elite 80 scooter that would always get the carb gummy during winter storage, even with fuel stabilizer something would get clogged up. I was able to buy a spare factory carb for $80 giving me 2 carbs. Each spring I'd take the carb off the shelf and replace it on the bike then take the one I took off and give it a really good cleaning and put it on the shelf so next spring I could just swap them again. I could have done with one though and just removed it, cleaned it, and put it back on. The reason I bought the second was so I could do the cleaning at my leisure. In any case Mustie1 is a carb cleaning animal, though $35 is cheap if it works.
Interesting video. I’ve never seen a carb slide with those “59 Cadillac-style wings”. Every CV carb that I have had apart was simply a round cylinder bonded to a rubber diaphragm.
@@Phiyedough CV carbs are really close to fuel injection. Sort of mechanical fuel injection. So they lasted longer than all the other carbs. And the 2010's though they started fitting fuel injection. It became a lot more common.
Try sintered brake pads, I find they last a lot longer and have better holding power. Nice wheeler. By the way you upgraded the tires from 25” to 27”, perfect size for that quad.

Good video Mustie, Those enricheners can be a pain I've seen between the cable or the plunger sticking or ageing going out of adjustment idle speed and mixture can be trouble some or all of the up to four mixture jets on Suzuki's. Nice machine.
My Kawasaki KLR650 had the same style brake calipers. It always wore out the inside pad way quicker than the outside pad just like the one on this quad.
That eagle at the end was really cool, Musty! I didnt know we had any around here. I live in south central-ish Mass. I have heard that there are Bald eagles around the Quabbin reservoir, but I dont hang out in that area of Mass. Nice to know our national bird lives near by.
saw t he title and was confused... we got some old 4 wheelers and that one looks like a new one to me.. When I was a youngster in the 80s we rarely saw bald eagles and when we did it was quite the big deal.. So nice to see them all around now..
Wish you’d spoke about the Diaphragm needle and it’s length . I got a carb and it came with the needle down 3 notches I think it caused all my issues. Long makes it lean shorter makes it richer . Just wanted to see what spot your clips were in .
I've got a 03 arctic cat 400 that I put 27s on with spacers and my entire goal was to make it so I'd get sprayed with mud lol overall nice quad and great video

I kinda had the same question. Someone mentioned wore out 😳. I don't really think so... Maybe a jet or a rubber diagram or the seal(maybe sucking a little air) All I can do is guess, but worn out is far fetched. On the other hand.... Mustie said he's messed with it numerous times without any luck... So I'm guessing there's something messed up bad or he overlooked something - unlikely. I am curious to see him figure it out. Once he dives into it, there are typically a lot of good comments. Some even make you want to slap your forehead and say Why didn't I think of that?
I don't think it's a matter of whether M1 could actually rebuild the oem carb. I think it's a question of time investment. Price of aftermarket carb vs time required to diagnose and repair oem carb, especially when you've already failed three times to find the problem.

That make sense, that the brass thing is a heater plug.
Wonder what the failure mode of the diaphragm is? Could it be the cause of Mustie's idle issue?

Pre-heater? Could be more for ice up prevention which is an issue in some extreme cases.

I agree, much more economical to spend $50 every 3 years versus $600, SMH. WHile the aftermarket cheaper version may have a cheaper casting, in reality the original wasnt all that much better in the long run as it continually was a headache with yearly fiddling every time you used it. I'll take the cheaper aftermarket any day, proves its value ever day I dont have to fiddle with the damn thing, lol.
$700 for a crappy little Mikuni carb is more than I paid for a specialized Holley 4-barrel carb for my truck. There's no reason they should be charging that much for a little motorcycle carb.
@@gb1613 well, let's see.. it's specialized for only a few applications with several extra gizmos (heater, fuel valve and whatever), check. it's been on stock for a while and probably isnt made anymore, check. if it's still made, then it's on special order and it's hand made in japan anyway, check.
Yeah, i see why that mikuni carb is expensive. the holley carb is versatile because it's NOT specialized by design... that means it's made in large volumes, which drives prices down.
This video is perfect timing! I started getting my 2000 Honda Rubicon back up and running 2 years ago this month. It had been sitting in the shop maybe 8 years. Heading out to the shop now to gather up the remaining parts and get back on her. Thanks Mustie!!! 😊

The external battery is genius!!! I have 2 Honda atc's that both need batteries, I have access to very cheap batteries but hard to get one to fit the bike, this is what I will do! Cheers mustie!

Like the burnt out wreck in the forest, that's about how they end up. They are ran hard, put away wet and then run again into the ground. It's amazing to me how nice equipment is routinely trashed. I visit a motorcycle salvage yard once in a while and the amount of trashed, ruined, neglected bikes is astounding.

I did the same carb swap on my Vinson about a year ago and it is still working fine. I ride it 3 or 4 times a week. Summer or winter, it starts easy and runs great.
The thing screwed under the carb is an heating element to prevent it from freezing.
If you try to use it sometimes it use AC , like electric choke
Hey Mustie 1, nice machine. The plating difference is zinc plating with yellow chromate conversion vs zinc plating with clear chromate conversion. I bought a knock off carb for my Sthil weed wacker and to this day it has outlasted and ran BETTER than the Zama original ever did. I have a feeling the EPA gets involved and the manufactures have to set them up too lean etc to meet emissions, but that's just a theory. You've given me inspiration to do some maintenance to my Yellow Polaris Sportsman twin 700 this spring. First thing I ever Bought new (2004) Thanks
It is a theory shared by a lot of small engine enthusiasts and is actually written down and enforced to the best of my knowledge; these EPA regulations to "save the planet". Most newer carbs lack fine tuning and have fixed jets to discourage modifying them to run richer, etc., etc.
I am sure that is true, certainly in Scotland where I am. My Honda GCV160 lawnmower engine ran too lean when I bought it and I changed the jet a couple of sizes up - works great now.
I have a 2003 Suzuki Eiger that had carb problems, similar to your symptoms, I removed it and thoroughly cleaned it, I also moved the throttle needle up about .020 in. That was 5 yrs ago, it is now 2023 and I have had no problems since. This is a. 400cc and throttle roll-on will spin tires in 1st or 2nd gear. Top speed is around 50 mph.
The small electrical device is a low wattage heater 15 to 30 watts to help with cold weather starting. There is usually a thermistor in line with it and shuts off as the engine warms up. But all you you have to do is put an inline switch to shut off the heater after 10 or 15 minuets of run time. You got it running though cool!

New carb is set up to use an electric enrichener valve. It is controlled by a temperature sensor. If you have a manual valve you do not need the sensor. I put the stock jets in the aftermarket carbs. I just got a cheap aftermarket carb for my Honda 450 Foreman and popped it on. Works really good. Only thing that I had a problem with was the mixture screw. The spring was very weak and it was missing the tiny O-ring. It kept backing out. I replaced the spring with the one out of the original carb and I had to buy the tiny O-Ring because I lost the one out of the original carb.
Some of those mini chainsaws that use batteries would be a good addition to your "emergency" stowage. As long as you keep charged batteries in with it. The one I have (a fairly cheap Amazon unit) is amazing. I can easily trim large diameter brush with it. Could even take down a good small tree. I still use my Stihl for larger jobs, but this thing is really handy! Amazed at how well it works. Would probably be good for on the trail when you don't feel like working hard with a hand saw.
Folding Corona saw....I keep one in each of my machines, along with a hatchet, small shovel and a fixed blade knife....I've used all of them at one time or another. The corona saw is a gnarly little cutter. Much better than the old Sierra saw

The mouse problem. Is most definitely the result of not having enough granny gowns in the neighborhood. I'm talking about the blue dresses with white spots. You get the count of those blue dresses with white spots up to where they're about three-quarters of the people you see walking around every day or wearing a dress, and you will no longer have a mouse problem. One of the side effects is though if you go to work in your garden you'll find a lot of hidden surprises so gloves are recommended.

I had a prairie 360 that had similar issues, turned out to be the intake valve lash. Reset the valves back to spec and bam ran like new again.

I did the same thing...I picked up an 2012 Ariens riding mower that hadn't been used for years. It was $70 for carb kit, so I ordered an Amazon carb for $27 with filter, runs great so far!

Worked on one of these last summer. Replaced a few small parts in the carb, the throttle cable, and adjusted it all and it was fine.
I rebuilt the carb on my 2003 Yamaha Roadstar last year. It had the same problems and used a similar CV carb. I had gone thru it a couple of times over the last ten years with not real long lasting fix until last year when I replaced the decel valve which changed how it run completely. Now it starts and runs great and idles instantly . The brass electrical item you removed is a carb preheater unit.
Well that was fun!
Now that you have a receiver, make yourself a Drop Down insert that can take a D Ring. Then you can run your winchline under and behind yourself and keep it centered to the machine if you ever need to winch yourself backwards.

Just wanted to say thanks for all the small engine carb rebuild videos I've been watching many of your videos even a lot of your old videos from 5 & 6 years ago. I used to be really bad with carbs I'm slowly getting better with them thanks to your videos. Just like I'm currently working on a craftsman snow blower I got from the trash guy said the engine was locked up. I got it home pulled dipstick and it smelled of gas so right there I knew what happened to it. Pulled the spark plug and it was full of gas and pulled the cord and all the gas shot out of it. So I'm rebuilding the carb now and will change the oil and hopefully it will run on its own
With the exception of one bad fuel shutoff solenoid that I was planning to delete anyway, I have really good luck with aftermarket carbs. You may get a bad one here or there, and they may not last as long on some applications, but when the cost of the aftermarket is a fraction of the OEM, it really doesn't matter if you have to go through one or two of them. The money you save is well worth it. I will buy OEM if it is a show room machine, but there is no reason to on most applications, unless the OEM is inexpensive. The price of most OEM carbs is just unreasonable.
I have been watching your show for some time now and have learned more than I can put into words. Thank you for your hard work! BTW, I have an old used Kawasaki Bayou that has been sitting for years and this show has encouraged me to get it running.

i actually picked up a 2005 arcticcat 500m, which is the same engine as in your suzuki Mustie1. it had less than 300 miles and only about 75 hours on it! needed a new needle valve after running it for a couple hours, but it was my dream atv since high school and its basically brand new still! i absolutely love your videos and im sure this one will be no different. thank you for the awesome content!
I bought a carb for my 93 Honda 4 wheeler from Amazon, and it ran out great. It saved me a bunch of money, too.
Maybe it's been said, but I've found boiling a carb in vinegar gets out deposits nothing else can. I think the heat opens up passages just enough. I did it on an expensive carb for a john deere garden tractor. Found a hardened chuck of varnished gas in the pot when I was done. Worked great after.

Had a Vinson and actually loved the quad for a short time until it became perpetually problematic. I sold it and bought a honda foreman and it has been literally flawless for the past 10+ years I've owned. The Vinson's powerband is better but im old so the Foreman works just fine

The electrical part on the new carb is a carb heater to prevent icing on cold days. My Vstar 650 has them and when the go out, you know it. Below 40-45 degrees the carbs ice up really bad. I chased this problem for a while on mine. I took the air filter housing off after it stranded me and looked inside the tube between the filter housing and carbs. There was frost inside there and the temps where low 40's. Summer time on the Blue Ridge Parkway after a cold front and rain passing over Mt. Pisgah. It sucked, but I nursed the old girl home and replaced those little heaters. I've talked to people about them but no one seems to know exactly what controls them. I assume it's the same little module that controls the electric fuel pump. The carbs are down draft and sit up under the tank so at half tank the bike quits if the fuel pump isn't running.
The small round cover has a diaphragm operated valve that cuts air to the pilot circuit under engine braking to improve control during descents.
Where I was at college, you could tell how good a weekend the local joy-riders/car thieves had by counting the burnt out cars dumped outside the village on a Monday morning!
I noticed the needle in the new one was way shorter than the old carb, I wonder if it’s adjustable, otherwise it looks to short to work properly. Anyway it did. Nice work 👍

Your wrenching is always fun Mustie, but I really enjoyed the last several minutes of you out in the woods on this wheeler. Maybe change up from wrenching and do a trail clean-up vid, maybe drag out some tools and bone out anything useable off the old burnt wheeler, just a day inna woods kinda thing.....

That was great never seen a carburetor so cheap but it works so use it and new to you got it going on service it and ready for another year of use great job Mustie but if it works Mustie can fix it thank you can't wait for next video thank you for sharing and your time.

It is a common problem that the rubber seal from that choke piston is worn out (or too hard) or the cable is not properly adjusted. So the engine is always running with a little extra fuel from the choke. The result is that the mixture is a little too rich and the engine died when idling.

I did the same thing to my 1987 YFM350ERT. Wound up rehabbing the original unit, there were enough fitment issues that it wasn't worth the extra effort. But I was out a grand total of $35, so didn't feel too bad. Your experience may vary. My old blue monster runs like a champ now, FWIW.
Mustie, the "blind plug" you removed might be a electric carburetor heater. If you google this you'll find parts exactly looking like that. Prevents icing of the carb. Not sure if you need this or if it's more a motorbike issue.

Those Vinson's 500 were animals. Id have done valve lash vs a knock off carb. another one lives however!
$36 dollar knock off carburetor vs $700 OEM one. You can buy a new 36 dollar Carburetor each year for 18 years and still save money over the OEM one. Happy you got it working better and now can enjoy it more.
I’ve been running one of those aftermarket carbs on my 06 Kodiak 400 for several years now. It was much more of a bolt on and go for me compared to this one. Mine was pretty much an exact copy of the OEM Mikuni carb.
That looks like a nice toy / workhorse. Well appointed too, 4WD, auto, hi/lo ratios.
i had same kind of problem with my bike and after messing with multi carbs single carbs etc i did a valve adjustment and it solved the problem right away they was no gap at all in the rockers

I'm surprised you just didn't buy a rebuild kit and give the old carb a good cleaning. I had a Honda Elite 80 scooter that would always get the carb gummy during winter storage, even with fuel stabilizer something would get clogged up. I was able to buy a spare factory carb for $80 giving me 2 carbs. Each spring I'd take the carb off the shelf and replace it on the bike then take the one I took off and give it a really good cleaning and put it on the shelf so next spring I could just swap them again. I could have done with one though and just removed it, cleaned it, and put it back on. The reason I bought the second was so I could do the cleaning at my leisure. In any case Mustie1 is a carb cleaning animal, though $35 is cheap if it works.

Interesting video. I’ve never seen a carb slide with those “59 Cadillac-style wings”. Every CV carb that I have had apart was simply a round cylinder bonded to a rubber diaphragm.
It's a thing on late CV carbs.
To be honest I would have expected fuel injection on something that new but I don't know much about quad bikes.
@@Phiyedough CV carbs are really close to fuel injection. Sort of mechanical fuel injection. So they lasted longer than all the other carbs. And the 2010's though they started fitting fuel injection. It became a lot more common.

Try sintered brake pads, I find they last a lot longer and have better holding power. Nice wheeler. By the way you upgraded the tires from 25” to 27”, perfect size for that quad.

Good video Mustie, Those enricheners can be a pain I've seen between the cable or the plunger sticking or ageing going out of adjustment idle speed and mixture can be trouble some or all of the up to four mixture jets on Suzuki's. Nice machine.
My Kawasaki KLR650 had the same style brake calipers. It always wore out the inside pad way quicker than the outside pad just like the one on this quad.
That eagle at the end was really cool, Musty! I didnt know we had any around here. I live in south central-ish Mass. I have heard that there are Bald eagles around the Quabbin reservoir, but I dont hang out in that area of Mass. Nice to know our national bird lives near by.
saw t he title and was confused... we got some old 4 wheelers and that one looks like a new one to me.. When I was a youngster in the 80s we rarely saw bald eagles and when we did it was quite the big deal.. So nice to see them all around now..
Wish you’d spoke about the Diaphragm needle and it’s length . I got a carb and it came with the needle down 3 notches I think it caused all my issues. Long makes it lean shorter makes it richer . Just wanted to see what spot your clips were in .

Here is my question, Why not do a rebuild on the OEM carb? If M1 could not rebuild it, it must have been broken or damaged very badly. Excellent content!
I kinda had the same question. Someone mentioned wore out 😳. I don't really think so... Maybe a jet or a rubber diagram or the seal(maybe sucking a little air) All I can do is guess, but worn out is far fetched. On the other hand.... Mustie said he's messed with it numerous times without any luck... So I'm guessing there's something messed up bad or he overlooked something - unlikely. I am curious to see him figure it out. Once he dives into it, there are typically a lot of good comments. Some even make you want to slap your forehead and say Why didn't I think of that?

I don't think it's a matter of whether M1 could actually rebuild the oem carb. I think it's a question of time investment. Price of aftermarket carb vs time required to diagnose and repair oem carb, especially when you've already failed three times to find the problem.

Great video! but at 47:45 all you have to do after cutting the top shorter is add a large washer or spacer on the bottom where there is no thread.

Glad Carb cheaper price work out excellent so far and would say check on how much used burn in old carb per hour or miles and compare on new one does ! That might idea to compare on too and might surprise you too!
