Thank you for showing the complexity of what you do and the choices you make about the equipment and placement. I enjoy your work very much; your talent but also the fact that you seem to be independent and making for yourself and your friends on your own terms. Inspiring and satisfying to see....and I think you're pretty good at videography as well.
Josh, your patients, trial and error and great talents are appreciated more than I can express. I can comfortably predict you have a very successful future ahead of you in which ever profession you chose.
I've always been fascinated with your videos, and I'm SO glad you did this. Thanks for being so detailed too! I'm an equipment geek too, so hearing every aspect down to the string and pick choices was quite interesting. Hearing all about the audio and video recording equipment and process was equalling interessting. I can't believe how long all this takes! Thank you thank you thank you for sharing so much great music with us. I hope to catch you and Carson live sometime!
I like to think of myself as an OK musician, but I don't know shit about recording. Seeing you run through all the recording equipment and techniques and stuff makes my head spin.
Well done Josh. Really appreciate the fact that you break down the tracks in order to seek authenticity in terms of production and arrangement. Bouncing to cassette and back?! Impressive... One would assume there'd be an analog plug-in suitable for the authentic sound you desire - but suspect you explored that route and opted to stay with the tried-and-true cassette bounce. Good stuff.
I always loved the Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars album, everything on it. On my vinyl album, there's a note on the back that says, "TO BE PLAYED AT MAXIMUM VOLUME." And it sounds killer at full volume. I could never do that with any of my other vinyl albums, it's the way it was produced. I can't say exactly what that is because I don't know enough about production, but it does sound great at full volume.
Josh you are a great Technologist. Amazing & way over my head. If you ever do a record with a major record company you should handle all the engineering of the cuts. You probably would be better than anyone they could come up with. Especially since you know exactly what you are looking for in the recording.
Thanks for this overview. Lots of hard work cut down to an almost insultingly short summary. The effort to show how you did this was an additional effort. All of which deserves applause.
Kudos to the late Mick Ronson for creating such a cool sound vibe for the "Ziggy Stardust" album--- also for the atring arrangements, soulful guitar parts, and classic guitar tones.. The album still sounds progressive almost 50 years later: RIP to Mick and Davi
Very, Very, Interesting. I got a wack of recording and effects equipment that I've never even figured out how to use. So I applaud your talent and the fact that you alway seem to have fun doing it. Thanks.
Glad you touched on WHY you might make a cover. When I painstakingly do one I often sit there and ask myself why the hell I'm even doing it. You're right, it's a learning experience. I often compare it to doing a jigsaw puzzle. Why do people do such things? You know what the final version is going to look like. The picture is right there on the box! But, somehow, piecing it all together is creatively satisfying. Perhaps it's a little too personal but, would love to know about your living arrangements that you can bang on de drum all day!
Awesome! Loved to see what mics you use, where you put them, what gear you use, how you organize each day, everything from the music production side of the video. Thanks for sharing!
That cover was fantastic thank you for it. Also thank for the hard work you did to edit it and get it perfect. Not only that but you show us what you did too which is awesome!
With risk of sounding creepy, a video tour of your apt/set-up would be awesome! I'm building out a similar vibe in my prospect heights apt and (obviously) have to be pretty smart with space, reflections, storage, etc. Would love some DIY thought starters to get a sense of where I should start. Cheers! Great video!
I really appreciate the detailed and thorough but straightforward walkthrough of your setup. You're incredibly skilled and I am quite envious, haha. Cheers!
Thanks Josh. Excellent as usual. I am old guy that used to record on a fast text A8 quarter inch back in the 70s and 80s. It is interesting to see how you merge your cassette recording in with your ProTools. Keep up the good work. I hope you and your friends take a tour of Texas someday come by Austin Tyler DENTON you will be well received
Nice seeing some behind the scenes stuff. I do videos like this as well so I can relate on the video editing front. Lots of trial and error and incredibly time consuming. But worth it!
Uh... oKAY! Josh makes TEA while just watching this has crossed my eyes & given me a headache of enormous proportions, I feel like I need alcohol and a dang NAP!
This gives me so much more appreciation for what you do, and I already was a big fan ! You are a big inspiration. I also make music alone at home and I hope to get as good as you.
That was a awesome!! Super interesting. Still struggling how to record guitar and vocals on the zoom h and make the Recording synchronize with a separate Video of me playing 😅
Incredible process! I love that approach! Hats off to you! Ps: if I would be able to play a single instrument like you play drums... well that would be enough for me 🤗
Thank you Josh, I’ve been waiting for this video for a long time. You are a real pro my man. I can’t believe you ran it into and out of a cassette, that was really killer. I was hoping you did the strings remotely like you did so much in The Weight (A Thank You). I still can’t seem to figure that out.
Awesome work dude. Absolutely love your videos. Really like your behind the scenes style videos they're really interesting and great to see how you handle each stage of the recording. It'd be really cool to see a little of your writing process too. Like what part you approach first and how you build a song you've written. Anyway, keep it up man!
Josh, nice to see all you’re vids. You’re a great guitar player. I record with Cubase 10 and a lot VST instruments exept for my guitars. With this video you inspire me to use more real instruments also. Great Job. Best regards from the Netherlands.
This is the peek behind the curtain I've been waiting for since I subscribed. Great work, man.
totally agree
@geehump The Wiz lives!

Hey, man. It's nuthin' any 8 year old with a master's degree in music and 20 years experience couldn't handle.
Well done Josh. Really appreciate the fact that you break down the tracks in order to seek authenticity in terms of production and arrangement. Bouncing to cassette and back?! Impressive... Man how do you know all this about production, music and theory in such detail and nuances... genius jack of all trades keep rockin‘
This video is great but I'm genuinely disappointed you didn't show us how you did the clapping part. The people need to know...
Mobius Ace a musician never reveals his secrets

Please do more of this kind of bts video. Thank you so much for keeping the great music alive. You are one of a kind =)
As an amateur Home recording hack. You’re my hero!
OK, so now we know how you did it; how come the finished product still seems like magic and sends shivers up my spine? Brilliant!
This was thoroughly enlightening.... I look back at your videos and only can imagine the energies put out. You Josh are any musicians inspiration
The string parts are gorgeous!
Phenomenal - many, many thanks for making/posting this. Good luck for everything else you do.

My mind is blown!!!! To have superb talent is one thing, to produce and hear what is needed scientifically is another level. Soooooo f'n cool!!!

Very interesting! I've watched these videos and wondered how you do it. I see it takes a lot of work and dedication. I am impressed.
Just wanted to say thanks for making great vids! It's inspired to me to try my hand at recording a few full band videos myself!
...and here I am feeling fancy when I decide to actually plug a mic into my phone to record lol incredible amount of effort here, great stuff!
Josh, You are amazing! Keep on going, I hope to see more in the future! Thank You!
About what I expected, except for the Tascam, which was an interesting surprise. Sometimes old school just gives it that warmth.
that bit you had between 6:20 and 7:40 about listening to and emulating tones was so insanely interesting

Do you have any plans on covering a John Mayer song? I think almost any tune of „continuum“ would really fit your style of singing and playing...

Great stuff Josh
Ronson played a Les Paul on the entire album also an echoplex and composed the strings.
That’s so great josh you have great taste I have to rebuy that album
This video is awesome. I aspire to make videos like you.
Did you record this in an apartment in Brooklyn ? I bet your neighbors loved that !
You should look into multicam editing in Premiere for syncing your tracks. It’s a big time saver and works well.
Love your videos man...huge talent
And here I've been thinking that your main mic was an at2020. Look what can be done with a cheap mic and mim tele! Great to see your process.
Thanks! I was using an AT2050 for many years and I still own and love it, so you aren't far off!
THIS IS AWESOME!
Great video !
I watch this, cause i love ur efforts ;)
