It is only a matter to getting used to see some brushtrokes. I try to do this kind of exercises often, and it is relaxing, inspiring and fun! great content!!
I have been binging Alfonso's videos for a few weeks now and started on my slaves to darkness models. I love the kind of cartoony look you get, or like an oil painting instead of a realistic miniature paintjob. It's also a lot more expressive!
It is amazing to see you not only giving really good advice but following it yourself. It might sound silly, but there is a lot of people out there that doesn't do it. Thanks for teaching us and let us be part of your evolution through the hobby!!
Awesome video Emil! I've enjoyed every second! Totally agree with Alfonso Giraldes (Banshee) approach. I've been a student from him in the past and he really changed the way I understand painting and sculpting, because honestly it's not all about technique and perfect smooth or blends, it's also a matter of comprehension and attitude. The attitue to not fear the mistakes because after all, mistakes are just a tool we can use in order to learn and improve. Thank you very much Emil! I'm so glad to see you had fun painting my model! That's something I really care when I sculpt my miniatures :)
Leonardo Escobar Quintero has that worn out line about how mistakes are a good thing ever helped anyone, except in making them feel less bad about them..?
@@cn.st.182 I think we usually tend to fear to make mistakes when we are painting all the time, and that's like a self-limit barrier. In the past I remember I was so focused on trying to make perfect gradients, smooth surfaces and stuff like that, but honestly now I think that's not that important anymore. I know this maybe sounds like a worn out line, but this is just the surface. If you scratch deeper the Alfonso Giraldes lessons I'm pretty sure you'll understand and improve a lot your painting!
@@poisonauta232 I agree, while it's often said it's true. When I started painting models I got too caught up in making them the best that I could and if I made a mistake I'd go back and spend a ton of time trying to fix it. Though when you first start you make lots of mistakes, such as getting a color somewhere it doesn't belong or being sloppier than you want to be with the brush. That made me take forever just to get a small handful of minis done, and I'm happy with the results but I still had piles of unpainted minis. Once I started painting a little bit faster and not worrying as much about reaching perfect results I've been able to paint a lot more minis and they look just as good if not better, and I'm learning faster too. I have better brush control now too because I'm a little more bold with my painting and I'm not spending 10 minutes or more just to put down a basecolor over a few spots on a small model. So I think it is good to not let the fear of making a mistake hold you back or keep you from painting more and attempting more challenging paintjobs or techniques. I still have a long way to go to reach even the kinds of things Emil can do, but I'm having more fun and painting a lot more now because I'm not letting the fear of making a mistake control me as much.

I’m stressing about the number of unpainted minis I have and was thinking of speed painting technique. Sam lenz did some sketch painting style where you can see the brush strokes. But as you say, it gives the minis character. Might give it a shot.
Can you please teach us the final ultra secret? How did you get your baby to stay still for long enough for you to paint like that? Mine just power squirms then attempts to eat every mini on the table.
Another awesome video! How do you stick down your Vallejo weathering powder? I find it comes off easily if you don’t varnish it, but loses its powder look if you do varnish it.
This is really cool, getting as much done as fast as possible is what I aim for most with my painting. Not really close to this level . though :D (And meanwhile, Marco painted 5 warcry warbands and a small Skaven army).

Hi Emil, Another pretty good video. That's clearly something I will do (as soon as my broken hand gets better, haha). The style you gave to this miniature makes me think about Nicolas Deze's style (French very good painter, also known under the name of Little Demon Studio). Especially when he painted its box art for aradia miniatures... if you don't know its work, I recommend it to you. For this kind of process how did you go exactly : you put brush strokes of final color the different part should be and then smooth transitions or you go kind of layer by layer, step by step from shade to highlight , but not smoothing anything?
literally just came back from the hobby store with a box of Squig hoppers. guess I know what I'm trying next now that the wife has let me dip my toe back in :P
I'm glad I have found this video even if a year later, it looks cool and it's very inspiring. I may try this kind of fastpaint now that I'm growing a bit as a painter 🤗 (I'm so slow now 🤣)
Have you seen some of James Wappel UA-cam videos, he slaps paint on working on the whole figure at once and has a better mini than me in first 10 minutes sometimes. Think you did a great job, now to challenge myself.
Hey Squidmar. I live in Japan and there are a lot of Gunpla hobbyists. They use totally different kinds of paints! Ever use a Mr. Hobby Lacquer paint? Would you be down to try?

I scoop out a little glob with the end of my brush, but I know that's probably not a great practice, and I wouldn't do it with nicer brushes. Some people do like to transfer them but I think they are fine in pots, just get a little metal stir stick to mix them and use the end to scoop out the paint. The pots can start drying out if you shake them to mix them, especially if any paint dries on the rims, as it may prevent the top from getting a full seal. Otherwise I think pots are fine, but that's just me. Do whatever you think suits you best.

I have a challenge idea for you - and a few of your UA-cam painting colleagues. But could you all complete it, and would it be worthwhile, or a waste of time ?
"Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is as follows. This message will destroy itself in the next 10 seconds."
There needs to be 5 of you.
There are 2 choices here - either 5 identical miniatures, or 5 different miniatures from a unit e.g. 5 space marines, 5 gene stealers, 5 pirates, 5 Romans, 5 Stormcast Eternals, etc.
Each week, a certain part on the model is painted (everyone paints the same part) before being passed along to the next painter.
WEEK 1. Head
WEEK 2. Torso
WEEK 3. Legs
WEEK 4. Arms
WEEK 5. Base
Each painter paints that section, on that week, then covers that section so no one else can see it until the final reveal.
The only information you all know is the 5 colours you can use to complete them :
1. Black
2. White
3 Three other colours that you all have, or will buy, from every paint range so Vallejo, P3, Games Workshop, AK Interactive, Foundry Miniatures, Ravel, Mr Hobby, Tamiya, Game, etc. are all available to be chosen, unless you all agree to limit the choice to 3, 4, or 5 brands. These colours are picked totally AT RANDOM !!! You have no control over what same 3 colours you all get, apart from Black & White.
You can all decide between you, if there are any other limitations imposed, but at the end of the 5 weeks, when the base is completed, all the masking tape or plastic covers you have used to hide the painted sections is removed for the final reveal to take place.
Will it be a cohesive unit, regardless of who has painted what on them, or will it be 5 individual models, despite all using the same colours ?
No chatting between yourselves on how you mixed things, blending techniques etc. Finally,
"If you are discovered, the authority will deny any knowledge of your existence, and it will be up to you to complete your mission and escape enemy territory. Good luck. Message ends".
