Fun fact: the loin cloth is actually a goblin that has been mutilated. That's why you see the complete head still there, and behind the back of the troggoth you see he's tied together with his arms and legs. I painted my goblins' robes a specific purple theme so I painted the goblin around the waist of the troggoth the same theme as well.
It would be awesome if you did a video on doing 3 or 4 mini's with a more reasonable 10-15 min each and see how you improve over the 4 models with such a short time frame.
I second this! While it is nice to see what can be done in a longer timeframe, applying a paintjob such as this to 30, 60 or even 100+ miniatures (which isn't even that much for armies such as Tyranids or Orks) just isn't feasible if you want to be done with it in your own lifetime.
Would love to see a similar video, but in reverse. Start with spending the full "try-hard" time on the first mini, and then see how far you can strip it down as you have less time for each subsequent attempt.
This is a neat idea because I think it's how a lot of people paint squads. You kind know the look you want, you mess with one to figure out how to get the look, then the reat are quicker.
Yes. Someone needs to do this with the longest first. I remember this coming up in the discussion for another painter who did a similar video. Although, I think they painted the same exact mini.
I don't know if anyone else said this in a previous comment or not, but when all the models are shown together the 3 hour model somewhat elevates the 10 minute. It sort of looks like the 10 minute model is a subordinate of the 3 hour. Like a general standing next to a private.
I think both the 1 hour and 3 hour paintjob looks great. The 10 minute looks good for a quick paintjob, but I think I would go for maybe 1 hour for regular minis and 3 for more of the "character" figures. Hope to see more of this great army, as what we saw when you were at the shelf looked very impressive.
I feel like this video is a great example of how you get faster at painting things when you have a clear idea what to do and use and practice at it. Great job. :)
I love your videos, I’m re paining up the troll from the old battle for skull pass set which I first painted up when I was 10. Awesome to see how far I’ve come using the same techniques you used with the airbrush and contrast paints, so you posted this video at a funny time 😂
You need to do a video with ten minute increments, so new painters can measure our progress in squidmars. That is, from this video, I would estimate that I am an 80 minute suidmar painter. Now, it may take four hours to achieve that quality, but after four hours I can achieve the same quality as Squidmar would in 80 minutes. When mini painters meet, we would state our squidmar numbers. Respect from an 80 squidmar painter
Damned fine work! The ten minute guy really needed a blue-gray for the leather portions to pop against the skin, which I think would have helped elevate it, but that one hour model feels like such a good result-to-time product.
i subscribed to this channel 3 years ago because i enjoyed watching your approach to painting minis. sadly we don't really get painting videos anymore, so this video made me happy (despite the gimmicky nature of it). more painting, please! :D
I really enjoy people's "1 hr paint job" and it's funny how frequently people like that one the most given what I've seen other people post. I suspect it's bc talented painters know how to focus exclusively on the most critical parts of their 1hr job, the parts that will be most noticed and appreciated. Sure the 3 hr one is clearly more technically completed, but the 1 hr really focused on the highpoints that we notice. Great video and minis!
I'd like to see you reverse that. Paint one in 3, then 1, then in 10 minutes and see if the results are the same? Maybe it the reverse order would improve the 10 minute version?
I think the best way is to do all three! Stage the 3hr guy in the middle of the unit like in the reveal and the overall impression of them is fantastic. The other two provide background and colour contrast, and if people go for a closer look they can focus on the centrepiece.
After watching this video I tried out the the second /third colour on my Mollog but when I use the plague bearer flesh I comes out more yellow than green like in your video I then had to go over the top of it with akhelian green to get it to go that bright green as well as use it for the shadows
*_100minis, 1h a day, for 30days._* *_Or, 200 or 300, 1h a day for 30days._* *_This is what I prefer, I'm addicted to the feeling of suddenly having 100, 200 or 300 fully painted minis ready; 30 days later._* *_Now, granted, some minis are done before the rest, a general gets more TLC, but overall the entire group ends up looking so much better than just doing 10 and 10 minis this way._* *_What is comes down to really is 1h a day for 30days is 30h of painting a month, instead of a few 2-3h sessions here, a single 7h session there, and a couple of 1h over here...._*
I think it's good that this video brought up the fact that if you want better results you need to spend some time with your miniatures and i can understand somewhat why you probably need to rush things if like certain tournaments require you to have a painted army in order to play, but otherwise i don't understand why some are so hellbent on the principle that you should have pro level results in 5min or else it's a waste of time? I mean this is supposed to be your hobby so relax, enjoy it, take the time that you need and have fun and i would also say that don't compare your results with other painters that you see on the tube, there is only one person that you should compare to and that's yourself from yesterday.
''For a competition piece I'd spend around 8 to 15 hours on it.'' Wait what? That's usually about as much time as most people would spend painting a competition piece every week for like a month or two.
Watched your video and painted 6 trolls tonight. Took about 4-5 hours definitely quicker batch painted. Sorta around the 1 hour each quality but your basing game is much better!
Great work as always! I noticed the "thinning guide" in the background at about 8 minutes in, is that available anywhere?? Would really need that in my life to know what ball park im in when thinning 😅
Great experiment, but you should try it the other way. Start at 3 hours, set a standard you are happy with and then try to condense it down to 10 minutes. Army Painting Pro+
I actually feel like the amount of time and detail fits each model well. The 10 min troll is rough and bestial, the 1 hour troll looks a bit more outfitted and equipped, more cunning. And the 3 hour one is the most coordinated and intelligent, with the most gear. I think it gives them a good visual hierarchy.
Amazing work bro, can i ask which paints did you used for the 3hrs troll pls? im trying to get something like you with some proxy river trolls that i just printed (im new into painting miniatures)
i gotta ask. do you use a respirator when you airbrush for longer periods or do you keep the room well ventilated? i notice you dont use a respirator but i cant tell if the room has airflow to suck out all the little particles
What kind of light do I need to not cause the brush to put a shadow over whatever I am highlighting? currently using an adjustable office lamp with one of those white light bulbs
Please could you provide advice. Most of my painting is 40k but my son is collecting diecast aircraft. He has just been given one that is bright red diecast. What could I do to dull the colour to be realistically weathered? I will use nulnoil to provide panel lines but he wants the whole immaculate red to be slightly dulled, not shiny red. Thanks for any help, know it's not the normal stuff but you have fine painting skills so I'm hoping you have bright ideas. Cheers,
As always your work is amazing, on reflection though. I would have liked to see all three with the same colours. This would have shown how a little extra time and effort really make a model stand out and why.
They look so great could you pls do a video where you paint live and do it in 10 min sections like cut to a 30 min vid when you rly paint 3 or more hours to compare for the newbs? :D
love your videos. Im always kind of sad when u use airbrush in most of your videos because many beginners dont use that tool. I know it helps to pump out the videos and your work. but its sometimes hard to relate
Bought myself an Infinity with a good Compressor for like 400€ a year ago, that. You shouldnt do, couldve gone quite a bit cheaper and have the same good result, saw of Video from I think Miniac that had a 50-70€ 30 PSI Mini Compressor with an Airbrush included that apparently worked great. Better to throw out one expensive model for a month or two and get the Airbrush, such a useful tool. Edit : Its was Ninjon
Yo anyone know the name of the song at the end, also, these miniatures looked really good! I can't count how many times I've watched this, I have a set of these as well as a FEC starter box arriving soon, so I hope this will help me for when it's time to paint. Edit: as a video idea, was wondering if you'd be able to do some painting of any mantic games miniatures, would be cool to see, especially their greater earth elemental
This would be cool to see with different sized models, say nagash 3-5-10 hour or space marine 30min-1-2 hour. What you feel would be an appropriate amount of time. It would be nice to compare model sizes, since I feel like maybe a lower amount would be fine for a smaller unit
I often get bored of a mini after spending more than an hour with it, that’s when I put it away. I have noticed my quality getting better ever so slightly in that one hour window 😁
This evening, it's time for me to paint my very first miniatures. I know I'm not being nice to myself, cuz it will be the miniatures for the board game DungeonsQuest. And those are kinda small in scale. But I'll do as they say in Swedish: Skynda långsamt 👍
If you can handle an airbrush well, you can do in 10 minutes what normally would take 8 hours. So, practice more and watch NJM for tips and tricks. Also, oil paints can also save loads of time.
Adding basing after your painting time really distorts this as effective basing makes a big difference to the look of the model. The reality is you could probably get away with 30 minute models without a problem if you got the order of painting down a bit tighter rather than just having a go in that time frame. Then spend your 3 hours on your hero models to make them pop out from the rest of the models.
Feels like somewhere between 10min - 1hr is good for tabletop standard. 10 min for fodder and closer to an hour for the heroes, anything more seems kinda pointless unless you're going for a competition or just really enjoy painting.
I got to say I'm jealous that you have Time to do this for a living. I got to bust my ass to live and the couple hours a week I get to paint my figures is precious. 4 kids makes little time. Anyway thanks for the videos, I get alot of ideas and skill development from them
Just a jealous you are, I'm thankful. And it's thanks to people like you watching it's possible:) i know the struggle though, i have 3 kids myself and know how little time i have outside work to paint and play.

Your 10 minute mini looks like something I would paint in 3 hours!
feel like thats in huge part to the airbrush
I'm in the same boat I feel

The 1 hour looks great I think with 1:30 per on a production line type painting you will end up with a very beautiful tabletop army

i love the 1 hour the most. the point is there. maybe a really good segway into teaching beginner techniques.

Thanks this will be good for slower painting any skaven I get
Awesome video. I really wish these
Types of creators would do a miniature tour and show all the stuff they have painted/made through out the years
Look at their instagram.
i love the comparisons on work and time.
Do you have a pre-set palette or paint scheme that you use for all goblins? Going of reference materials? Or just “wing” it?
I think it's good that this video brought up the fact that if you want better results you need to spend some time with your miniatures and i can understand somewhat why you probably need to rush things if like certain tournaments require you to have a painted army in order to play, but otherwise i don't understand why some are so hellbent on the principle that you should have pro level results in 5min or else it's a waste of time? I was thinking the exact same thing.
Base paint+dry brush+Wash
''For a competition piece I'd spend around 8 to 15 hours on it.''
Wait what? That's usually about as much time as most people would spend painting a competition piece every week for like a month or two.
Too cool! wondering if you had a playlist somewhere for your awesome music selection? Could paint to those jams all day
Awesome video. Grand reveal need more time and different angles. Keep up the good work.
Watched your video and painted 6 trolls tonight. Took about 4-5 hours definitely quicker batch painted. Sorta around the 1 hour each quality but your basing game is much better!
You are such a great painter. Love your videos ✊✊✊👊
Have you ever thought about painting a miniature only in greyscale? Might be a cool challenge in lighting and shading.
Is that Vallejo khaki grey you mention for the belly on the green troll? Looks quite different to the Vallejo colour charts
Great work as always!
I noticed the "thinning guide" in the background at about 8 minutes in, is that available anywhere?? Would really need that in my life to know what ball park im in when thinning 😅
Do you add anything to the contrast paints to run them through your airbrush? Or is it just straight out of the pot?
Your 10 minute paint job still looks far better than most commercial prepainted minis that are on the market today.
Awesome video!!! Thanks for your great work!
All three of the trolls came out looking great. You really set a high standard to aspire to.
Could you do a vid on what in your opinion are the most difficult 40k army's to paint? Cant find anything on this.
I love challenges, and even your 10 miniature models look superb.
Haha thx mate. But it's gonna need some work 😅
i would like to see how you do this with exactly the sane model of miniatures and the same colours to see exactly the differences
i gotta ask. do you use a respirator when you airbrush for longer periods or do you keep the room well ventilated? i notice you dont use a respirator but i cant tell if the room has airflow to suck out all the little particles
Both, when i just spray a little i don't mind. But when we spray for hours we have both a booth and respirators.
This is my absolute favourite squidmar vid. (Mostly cause of the troggs)
What kind of light do I need to not cause the brush to put a shadow over whatever I am highlighting? currently using an adjustable office lamp with one of those white light bulbs
You need another light to avoid shadows. Multiple lights from different angles will eliminate that.

Contrast through the airbrush. Didn’t realize that would work so well
verly goud choice of music, mesmerizing results
his 10mins equal to my 10hrs with extra focus giving all my best.
I would love a full video "Grand revealing" your full collection of orks and goblins as it looks amazing.
When Eric paints in 10 Minutes to a higher standard than me in two hours… :D
Great work again!
As always your work is amazing, on reflection though. I would have liked to see all three with the same colours. This would have shown how a little extra time and effort really make a model stand out and why.
Beautiful work.

Love the painting challenges 🙂
Your 1h paint job is better than me painting for a week ... perfectly acceptable and I'd be happy with that lol
Great stuff friend 👏 👍
I'm new to tabletop games, what game are those trolls from?
Hey Emil and Squidmar team! Great vid as always, where can I get the mat you have under your palette? Or are the mixing amounts part of the desktop?
It's from red grass games

I mean of course the 3-hour model looks amazing but there's definitely a happy medium between 1 and 3 hours.
I often get bored of a mini after spending more than an hour with it, that’s when I put it away. I have noticed my quality getting better ever so slightly in that one hour window 😁
you should definitely paint Smaug in the future
i wanted to say how the hell you made it in 10 minutes :D and then i saw the fan ... didn't expect that
Great painting! Damn your fast🤯
How do you avoid the reactivation of the ap speedpaint?
Have never really had that issue
Would be really interesting to see this test run again but with the times the other way around
This evening, it's time for me to paint my very first miniatures. I know I'm not being nice to myself, cuz it will be the miniatures for the board game DungeonsQuest. And those are kinda small in scale. But I'll do as they say in Swedish: Skynda långsamt 👍
Your 10min looks better then anything i would do lol. But im just getting started, love your content! Wishes from fellow Swede^_^
Squidmar: painting things better in ten minutes than I can in 5 hours
Your "tabletop ready" is more than my max.....^^
how do you keep speedpaint from reactivating?
i dont do anything... but if you have issues with your painting style, maybe use ak interactive ultra matte varnish
I would be happy with the 10 minute one, despite taking me at least half a day to do.
last week I did my first mini after more than a year watching here.... This is addicting...
This dudes 10 min miniature looks better than my unlimited time miniatures. 😅
Going to be holding on to this when I paint my ArtisanGuild, Rock n' Troll trolls!
In some ways I prefer the 10 minute one. Sometimes simplicity works.
Your 10 min is my 5 hours… insane great job!
love your vids
Your 1 hour mini is better than my 2-week mini.
It is sad/fun to see that after 10 min, it is possible to get better quality than some has on their minis :P
His 1hour minis look better than my whole entire weekend's worth of painting a mini. wtf.
If you can handle an airbrush well, you can do in 10 minutes what normally would take 8 hours. So, practice more and watch NJM for tips and tricks. Also, oil paints can also save loads of time.
I would like to see same challenge but with only brushes (except for priming) no airbrush. Man sized 28mm modell!
you should have painted all three in the exact same color so we can really see the differences
Önskar ja hade haft pengar för o hålla på me detta som hobby :D
It usually takes me over an hour to pick out my paint colors. 😆
Alright, guess i need to go finish assembling my flesh-eaters, I'm feeling the urge to paint some ghouls
Love the fact that he can paint a model in 10 minutes and make it still look better then if I spent 5 hours painting
Hmm.. didn't think Ink over black would work so well to be honest....... i have Vallejo inks, you think that'd be okay too?
Feels like somewhere between 10min - 1hr is good for tabletop standard. 10 min for fodder and closer to an hour for the heroes, anything more seems kinda pointless unless you're going for a competition or just really enjoy painting.
So let’s see what an assembly line paint work looks like
