Can I make a Dollar Store Dragon look good? I scanned my home town for about half a year to find a shitty looking dragon. It took some time since all toy stores and dollar stores stopped selling these cheap, wonderfully derpy miniature dragons. However - While browsing a local flea market I did find one of those lost dragons that the dollar store used to sell before. 60 cents later I was a dragon richer, something that maybe could be painted and made look good enough to use in a game of Dungeons and Dragons / D&D. Maybe not the right scale for my Warhammer & Age of Sigmar games. But I'm not afraid to take on a challenge!

The wings look like they came off one of those Megabloks dragons, the ones that came in eggs with the rubber "slime" pouch.
Awesome video. Hopefully you do more of these.
Necron player here, always good to see painting skills, masterclass stuff
This was really impressive. This dragon literally went from zero to hero.
from schmole to whole
Just bought some plastic toys - dinosaurs, tanks and soldiers for practicing painting with oils.
I love to see you repaint some original He-Man figures! I grew up with He-Man and I have such great nostalgia for it.
I love your videos! You're so talented and have such a likeable video presence. Thank-you!!!
Costco currently has a set of six dragons that would be great for dragons like this.
Jennell you have to do it :D maybe paint one of every type of dragon for DND :D
I purchased the dragons. They aren’t quite as awful as the one used in the video. I have a personal painting challenge that involves using a limited palette for a set of adventurers and a monster. Adding the dragons feels like a good extension of the theme.
Derpy derpy derpy! This was great, there are so many painting channels now, but you continue to produce really watchable stuff, keep up the good work!
To me he/she seems like an old dragon that's maybe lost a few teeth in battles and is just tired of people coming to its cave. It just wants to rest and have a happy life.
Great video man. I'm going to be browsing dollar stores and flea markets now looking for stuff to repaint haha.
I just started this video and already love it! Haha, what a great idea!
I thought you had no chance when i saw that first pic. Boy was I wrong. Turned out amazing! Nice video bud.
Should’ve used green stuff to fill those gaps! It was great looking regardless though, and I understand you wanted to see what you could do with JUST paint. Very cool.
I feel like this color scheme is popping up everywhere I just did my D&D Trex with the Same color pattern and skin marking, because i saw another painter on UA-cam do a Dino in this color pattern lol
Emil, you're the best. I had much fun watching this! All the best, David
Painting an old He-man figure would be awesome
thats an awesome idea! Making a HE-MAN super realistic would be DOPE!
Looks like a mechanical golem dragon now, good job !
I would like to see more videos like this one.
Emil, you are truly inspiring. I'm totally going to do this myself.
My son bought a couple of $5 dragons from K-Mart last year that were detailed enough to be great for painting. He wont let me near them though haha.
I really love this video, it’s inspired me to try this myself. I’d like to see you try the monster mash challenge, I think this is something you would really enjoy and would certainly make for fantastic content!
What a neat Idea. I bet someone could make a whole youtube channel based on this premise. :)
Been done before.
Several times actually.
These dragons are fucking awesome xD. You can still get heaps of different types in Nz, best $2 shop buy I ever got
I really like the painting, however I think you should have atleast gotten rid of the mold lines. Maybe next time, you can try to fix the sculpture again, as a challenge. I would love to watch that, turning a dollar miniature into a one of a kind master piece. Anyway, great video. :D
Oh man, thats a whole other project! I'd love to do something like that, but its a time consuming project to say the least :)
Squidmar Miniatures that's true, but it would be really cool to see, and it would put your skills and patience to the test. ;)
Amazing stuff. Id like to see some old robots ore voltron era painted
Ive got a 90s GW zombie dragon, it’s a comparable sculpt to be fair ;)
I have just got the same dragon (actually a bunch of those) for the same purpose last august. I might try something up! thank you. I have got them here in Japan, I didn`t know they sold`em in europe as well!
You should redo a GI-Joe, Smurf or Mickey Mouse plastic figure. They’re mostly bland mono color figures. I would be interesting to see with highlighting and dry brush
Minor suggestion for a challenge,, Useing automotive spray paint for the base
Wow, really well done!
Also, you're not nervous, airbrushing so close to your tablet😉
YOLO :D
Cool! Thanks
Is my baby crying? Oh it's just Squidmar's
Silly question here: I just purchased a dragon from the same line. What did you use to clean it? Did you actually strip it of its old paint? Cheers, and know that your work is trully inspiring!
Generally to get the mold release off, soap and warm water will take care of that. That's what I use for my resin models.
and it looks great!
yeah. Subscribed
I would _totally_ play with that dragon on the table in my RPG's! Question: Did you strip the existing paint off that mini before you started? Or did you just prime over the existing colors?
I washed it with soap and primed it. Not sure how the plastic would react to stripping agents.
Whats the song around the 12 min mark i really like it.
Warcraft miniature figures repaint em
You should paint something with a “Dana Howl” inspired gradient
Dana does Dana great, she don't need me to try to be her :D
Squidmar Miniatures don’t try to be her, but something as an homage...
You should paint a 1/144 scale HG Gundam kit.
What do you recommend? I'd love to check that out some time! :)
@@SquidmarMiniatures
Check out any website in your area that sells Gundam nodel kits, there are a ton of them. Just look for any HG 1/144 scale Gundam kit that you like the way it looks. The "Revive HGUC RX-78-2 Gundam" is a good place to start from.
How can he have Citadel Colors in bottles like Vallejo offers them? I want that too! :D
You transfer them to dropper bottles. Plenty of videos on it as the pot vs. dropper bottle war has been waged for a long time.
@@13Robzilla just found out myself the moment after. Thx for the headup :)

This Dragons it is from a toy store from my city. It is like a Reaper miniature but worst! LOL... I think now he's much better after I totally repainted him. Cheers!
I'm a simple woman. I see a dragon, I upvote.
hear hear!
and then, your kid of 4 start playing with it...
♥️
Dont you mean 'Euro Store'? xD
In Sweden they are called dollar store 😉
@@SquidmarMiniatures What?! xD
@@nozyspy4967 we don't have euro here, we have SEK. But the stores are called dollar stores.
@@SquidmarMiniatures Ohh sorry, i thought Sweden was in the Euro. Silly me its the Krona isn't it? It should be the Krona store then! :D That has a nice ring to it...
How to paint your dragon
haha spot on
it could represent a young dragon. Then when your players get over confident, you drop mamma painting in the same scheme on the table.
you persuaded me into painting a dino from my son's collection... best not tell him...
How'd it go?? And did he like?
This is so cool. To be honest it reminds me a bit of those doll repaints where people turn ugly Barbies into cool goth dolls or video game characters etc. This is like the wargaming version of doll repainting xD
not to get too toy story 6 on yall, but that dragon looks SO happy now: like all its dreams have come true and like destiny is real
This. This I like.
I need to make my own little monsters happy.
To the paint station!
Watching you paint the eyes, I am constantly amazed by the amount of detail you're able to get into the smallest of areas.
This is awesome...I literally just bought a dragon from my local craft store. This video is exactly what I want to do. I haven't ever painted a mini before so it will be a learning experience....haha and i just watched black magic craft video before this one. So I guess I'm keeping the chain going.
Did you complete your one?)
Derpy the fumble dragon, his breath inflicts a -5 penalty to all dexterity and combat roll.
I've been contemplating a Brachiosaurus that's 20 years old...
I once turned a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Troll into a Giant for Warhammer Fantasy. Really liked turning something completely different into a playable mini.
"Don't worry if it doesn't look perfect at this point" as I am staring in amazement in how gret it looks.
awesome.
for my d&d game I did a lot of this stuff.
personally I like d&d more than miniatures wargames because it has a lot more space for toy converting, trash finds or even sculpting in green stuff.
dm scotty's style
I like both types of minis. They both scratch that creative itch in different ways. So I do both 😁
You should check out a game called Dragon Rampart if you're into making your own fantasy monsters. Great light mini wargame that allows much more room for conversions.
Sees title:
You absolute mad Svensk!
Dollarstore has some great discounted models from time to time.
This one wasn't great, but it was a great amount of fun 😊
Yep, I’d definitely work that into a D&D session! Great idea on turning the wing clip into a saddle. Happy to be a supporter :-)
I remember megabloks made these when I was a kid, that one is a mix between their dragon and dinosaur egg lines. Great work man 👌
ive got two of the dragon egg ones, maybe i should get into painting lol
Love your work, definitely one of the best content creators in the painting sphere. Keep up the great work!
P.S. Really enjoyed the music in this one!
Question how come your citadel paints where in eye dropper bottles instead of the normal pots that we buy in the uk, did you buy them that way or did u pour the paint into them? Great video many thanks
He transferred them himself, I think! I recall him talking about doing so in an earlier video.
That dragon comes in a set you can purchase on Amazon: just search for "dragon eggs" or "12-pack Jurassic hatchling eggs".
These were sold in regular small blister packs for 1 dollar. There were two different versions of it in the store like a year back :) (btw just gogoled it, that other design is another one of those dragons in the eggs, i'm guessing the factory probably made different versions of it)
Well now I know what I'm doing for my niece and nephews this year.
I recently found a bunch of small dragons in a capsule toy machine.
Great video man, I have some old toys I've converted. Would like to share with you, where can I send you a picture of the figure?
Tag me on twitter or Instagram 😊
@@SquidmarMiniatures awesome
I love seeing how you mix paint. It's super professional and good to learn from! Great video, Emil
I recently got into painting minis. Started watching theses videos and practiced on dollar store toys and apple barrel paints. I am now on my 4th “real” mini and using better paints. Thank you for these videos. They have inspired me and helped me progress fairly quickly in a short time. Any tips for a newbie aspiring to be a youtube mini painter ? Thanks again
i would be fine if this model was brought out in a D&D Game i was playing it would look awesome on the table top in a dungeon game of D&D :)
Hey I really liked the dragon, I would have loved to see some gold highlights, something like the dragon was laying so long on a tone of gold and there was some sort of gold dust going on
Hahaha this is really a proof that sculpt counts as much as painting
I'd love to see you do some Lord of the Rings orcs and do like a whole sprue and give them all a different skin tone.
Why does this dragon have the wings from the fast food mega bloks gifts
That is great. I have a very similar toy dragon and I think this has inspired me to think about actually repainting it. Thanks for that. (although I may be get the same result as you, I can't do any worse... I hope!)
Fiskformade ögon? Varför inte? Trodde inte att du skulle få ihop det här, men den blev ju snygg!
This looked like so much fun. I think Im going to buy some toys and try repainting them myself
Yeah man 😁 it was so much fun. Next time I'm doing some figure with a better sculpt
Sadly i threw all my old figures out just a week before starting mini painting. Regretted it right after i half-finished (washes didn't arrive yet) my first mini and was out of practice objects.^^
Got to Pound shop. Buy some crappy toys repaint and sell for profit.... now why didn't I think of that.
Here's a challenge for you mini painters. I recently purchased a tube of "fantasy creatures" from Amazon. In this tube, you get around 98 varied creatures of different types, including dwarves, fighters, wizards, skeletons, dragons, nagas, ettins, elf rangers, orcs and griffons...and maybe another one or two types. This tube of creatures costs about $10 US. They are sort of a rubbery type of material. Quality is similar to this dragon, and the scale is likely about 30-32mm I would estimate.
My first mini was just a heroforge of my first DnD character. Before that though, the first thing I actually painted to practice before doing that was a shitty little blind bag Jurassic World dinosaur that I picked up after watching Black Magic Crafts video whilst looking on how to start painting.
Even now, I really like that mini even though my skill level has improved since then. I just went to Games Workshop, picked up like 4 colours I wanted to use and painted it. I learned the basics using that mini and honestly, the only awful part about it when I bought it was the total ass mass production paint job. The detail of the model is far from awful, it just looks far worse off the shelf...which is a trend I've noticed with 'toys'.
I still have a look in the toy isles in stores to see if they have any little toys that could make cheap and unique little miniatures and most of the time, the paintjob is really the only unsalvageable part of them. Slap some green stuff in the joints, prime them, paint them and base them and most people won't realise it came from the toy isle at ASDA (unless they've seen the toy).
My favorite little project like this was Monster Hunter figures. I absolutely ADORE Monster Hunter but sadly, I've never been able to find many miniatures for it (until recently when I backed the boardgame on Kickstarter). I bought a load of those shitty Monster Hunter figure builder models (despite the name, they're pre made and painted figures, you may just have to slot the tail on). The paintwork was absolutely disgusting on them but the models? After repainting them they looked so fucking good.
I have a 35 year old Ibanez Guitar which has a shape like a Japanese or Chinese halberd, it has the ugliest pink / purple pokemon color that I would like to change. So I'm going to change pickups on it and get some active ones instead of the ones sitting there now. The ones I have a look at are some bone breaker (Kirk Hammett) which are matte black with a green EMG logo on.
I think those pickups would stand well for a poisoned hallebard, but I have no experience in painting that kind of weapons. However, I think I should stick to the matte black base color and then shade it up with something yellowish green over green and with a little bluish and purple flicker.
I would love to see you paint some poisoned weapons, daggers, swords or even a halberd.
I would use even original one in d&d, loved his green energy :D great job anyways, eyes 10/10 :D but man, that front legs looks still grotesque :D
you could have sanded/cut off the mold lines before you applied the primer, would have made it look more organic.
Here's a challenge, paint a Star Wars Sith figurine and make the light saber and Sith eyes glow actually stick out and also reflect red light on the Sith itself, I saw someone who painted energy colors on a vehicle bright blue and shaded it to look like it was legit glowing.
Wow would love to see a guide on how to do those eyes
I'd love to see you paint a larger action figure like a vintage heman. I personally paint many larger action figures and I would like to see how you would do you details at a larger scale
ive had an idea to make a squad of space ranger termenators for 40k out of some mini buzz lightyear toys lol
JESUS, I loved these as a kid, you could mix and match them into so many unholy abominations
I am planning to paint a Bulbasaur i have, in a kind of cartoon way i don't know. I am not decided yet haha
your paint job made it look far better then it had any right to..... quality
Know what I've seen Pez dispenser tops make great busts.
That looks like a professional mini. Awesome job!
Please do a 90s Wrestling Action Figure. ;-)
I have had that dragon toy since I was six and it went from dargrom to dragon
Fantastic video. Wow.
I would have filled it and cleaned it up and based it
That piece of plastic never looked as good!
I thought that was the "after" when he first showed it -_- Looks fine to me
Nobody can get the Derpy out of the Dragon
