Good video. You were carrying a linemen's belt and never used it. You worked your ass off getting up the tree. If you used the linemen belt on the way up you can get your tether up way easier and you have one more point of contact on the tree (much safer). Stay safe brother!

Yeah no doubt. When hunting early season I always carry one.
I always use my lineman's belt to adjust tether. It allows you to be hands free and get the tether higher for bigger bite for less transitions.
Ive done that a few times recently myself. It really does help keep you stable.

Nice climb. Doing my first this weekend.
Nice. It's so much fun climbing trees lol. Boy kids had it figured out back in the day lol. I'm just focusing on safety and process at the moment. I know speed will come with time.
I picked mine up last year hunted with it about 10 times and so far this year I’ve set up five practice climbs the difference from last year to this year is night and day the biggest thing is my level of comfort. But I recommend setting up that hollow block 2 And always taking advantage of your lineman’s rope as you’re moving your tether up the tree. Really removes a lot of the stress
I also use a sterling hollow block 2 as a back up to your mad rock give me a little extra peace of mind redundancy versus hitting the ground in the event of a failure. swap out the quick like you’re using for an oval QuickLink far less likely to slip out of the rope, And I also got rid of the fourth step on the ultimAider, I found it only helps you with your first move on the ground after that it’s more shit to get tangled up in your feet. I thought that was a good climb, recommend putting in your squirrel steps every time you practice
I had more problems getting that thing set up than I did learning to climb.

Great job. You do everything almost exactly like myself. Only 2 differences.
1. I pack my aider up before I remove the stick from the tree.
2. I clip my stick right to the carabiner that’s connected to my bridge.
I forgot to pack the aider up before I took it off the tree. As soon as I pull the rope from the cleat I though dang it. I edited that struggle out lol, but yeah that for sure makes it easier lol. I have a tx5 Quickdraw that I'll be attaching to my new saddle.
I respect all hunters ways and ideas. Some get super offended if you don't like their views. I don't get the whole one sticking. It seems like it takes more time going up and I lot more force. Coming down is a no Brainer.
My main reason for going with one sticking is just that my legs are short. 4 stickd with single aiders and im at like 15ft lol. I wanted to climb higher with less weight. Speed should never been the #1 goal. Staying attached at all times and making it home is my goal. Speed comes with practice.
Try hooking your dyna glide pull down rope on repel side of the quick link. By doing this the rope comes loose easier eliminating the need to walk out from the tree and spreading more scent and the rope if your climbing a shaggy tree will pull through the quick link. I've also pulled the repel rope loose from branches that I've had to climb over

Do you mean actually put the dynema glide clip on the D link itself ?
The downside to that would be if you forgot to unclip the rubber Y underneath the repel rope…. As a new one sticker I can see that happening in the dark especially after throwing an arrow on your heart’s pounding
I have yet to do this type of hunting but ordered everything, the one thing on your set up the scares me is the short tag end on the tether knot. I'm thinking a longer tag and a back up knot on the tag would make me feel safer
Whatever makes you feel the safest is best. Not a bad idea. When tied properly there is no need for the stopper or a long tag end. Hundreds of climbs the knot has never moved. Ive had to use a screwdriver to break it loose to change quicklinks. Best of luck this year.
Solid and detailed video, man! I'm in my saddle for my first season this year and I'm just rocking my 4 Hawk sticks and a few aiders. I definitely see the weight savings and honestly it's probably safer getting down by rappeling rather than doing the reverse with 4 sticks.
My second season in a saddle. I used the 4 stick method last year. Within like 3 climbs I knew I would end up one sticking. The weight savings isnt as much as you think. The savings is in the pack up time at the end of a hunt.
@@TheHunter46176 Yea, I could see that being true. I don't think you'd save much in weight, but mostly just packing like you said. I also think you'd end up saving time on the climb down.

That pack and play was a pain in my butt. I always had trouble getting the aider back in it without falling out the sides. I had my wife sew it shut on the sides. So much better now
They offer one like that now as well too. That was everyones biggest complaint.
I just started one stick climbing this year also. The one thing I do different is with every other step I take up the stick and aider I move my tether so I dont have slack in it at any time. This is just me but I always want the feeling of the tight tether makes me feel safer. But liked the video for sure good stuff.
Yeah keeping slack out of the system is pretty big in my eyes. I do alot of fall protection training at work. You would be shocked at the force a 3ft fall creates.

I got an Ultimaider its fully adjustable plus you can add or remove steps as you see fit. But to answer your question 15in.
Very cool, I would like to try it out, these pine trees out here are a pain to deal with let me tell ya. I may take the saddle out this weekend for the 100+ yard shots, working on some paint on the targets Delta McKenzie just sent me, a speed bag and a Mo' Go Mo' Foam. Trying to use glowing in the dark with neon pink. 🎯👀👍

Noticed what looked like something yellow on the cam cleat. Did you put something there to silence it?
Yes its a 12 in nite ize gear tie. Paracord works too. The gear tie just seems more sturdy and does not flatten after use like cord. Just make sure if you put something in the cleat. Steath strips, cord, gear ties, or whatever make sure it does not affect the function of the cleat. Common sense i know. Just be careful. Happy hunting.

I do. I use my brake hand to control my speed. Always use a brake hand.

Nice video, really liked it. I agree, it's mostly just a learning curve and learning to trust your gear. I think the "most freaky" part is when your moving your tether up and then when you first start to rappel. After the second move I usually break out the lineman belt just for some added safety when adjusting the tether. Starting your decent can be a bit nerve wracking until you get a feel for the friction, but it's really not that bad. Other than the tether adjustment, it's really no different than using multiple sticks tbh and you don't have to carry all the extra stuff. It's way safer going down though.

What pouch were you using for your rappel rope in this video?
It was just a tethrd pouch. The TX5 KYSS pouch is where its at though.

Im using 40ft canyon camo elite. It packs tight in the KYSS pouch, but I have a storage technique that allows me to pull out 8ft or so of the rope the rest just stays there till im ready to come down.
I want to like this method I just can't see using in the types of areas I hunt. It's usually super thick and nasty with real gnarly trees.

I really like your video, but i think you should back up your madrock device. It is the only thing holding your entire weight. If it fails you would hit the ground. Redundancy is key in climbing.

How much did the whole setup cost? I’m pricey out at $1000. So: $300 saddle, $300 stick, 300 for (rope, rappelling device, carabiners, pouches, etc), then tax. Feedback is welcome.
Depending on brands you choose anywhere from 800 to 1200. So yeah about 1k. Its an aweaome way to hunt from an elevates position anywhere anytime without carrying all the weight.
How many feet are you getting with each move?
With the experience I have now id say close to 6

It’s a cam cleat that can be added to any stick, muddy was just the first company to have their own on their sticks but cam cleats were around long before muddy.
I believe its meant for like docking boats or something
I like this method but i just cant do it. Too much slack in my tether at times for me to feel safe. I have fallen from 22 feet so i may be a little more weird than most about that kind of stuff.
Its not for everyone thats for sure. As a community we have been working on ways to minimize or eliminate slack. Safety is #1 after all.

I have only use this item no more than 20 times up in the tree. It could be retainer ring issue or the shaft and it makes me worry abt it. Madrock agrees that my safeguard's plate rest farther down than the new one, and all they suggested is to retire it. Not sure how their warranty works, but i would consider buying petzl Rig as the alternative to Safeguard.
Yeah mine does not wobble like that at all. I have hundreds of rappels on mine.
Too much work.. imagine doing all this in the dark. I use tree gaffs.
Its not as hard as it seems, and it can be a very safe option for those that can not penitrate the tree.
This is 5 times slower than just carrying sticks... Not only is not not advantageous, this is slower and mo0re of a pain in the ass. All for what, because you are too weak to carry an extra 2 sticks?
For me its way faster than multiple sticks. I carry more weight with this setup after ropes and such. Its not for everyone.
