This is a GREAT explanation on how to, in my opinion, one stick climb the safest possible way using your linemans rope. I know most don't use it, and I get it, but I feel its far safer to do it with the linemans belt on the climb up. Aiders are sketchy no matter how you use them. Having the linemans to help minimize the risk of a slack fall on your tether in the event of a aider kickout or even a stick failure is extremely important. Remember, we're using static rope and the saddle is not designed to be a fall arrest device. A slack fall of a foot or more is going to hurt! Again, this is just my opinion. Great video showing the use the linemans with one sticking!

Great video! Most one sticking videos say the same things and yours was fresh and easy to watch.
2 things I would recommend are to attach your pull rope to the bottom of the bow (the nock side of the quiver). I have pulled my bow up in wet/muddy conditions and broke a nock in the mud as I pulled the bow up. I would also set your bow away from the base of the tree in case of a fall. One of those arrows could pop out of the quiver.
I really like how you use your lineman belt not only as a safety device but as an aid. This makes it much easier

One thing I think would help you. If you offset your tether quick link of to the side you want to lean to grab your stick to start your next move, it will be less fighting with the tether.

I used a smaller rope and tied in my cleat so I can pull the rope out and they don’t clank and that really helps a lot. There is a few different ways to make that quieter if you haven’t done something by this time. Good video. I one stick myself. This past season was my first season doing so just like most people lol. I have been in the saddle for five seasons. I still enjoy watching these videos and supporting anyone I can. Support from Southern Indiana

Great video. Good job. If you hunt the same trees you might consider leaving a paracord pull line in the tree where you have a limb and DRT up. Just another tool without a lot of overhead.

The Resc Tech break strength is over 6,500 pounds actually.
Only reason a quick link sucks is they fall alot. I dont use it till.i use my repel rope
Man, we have a lot of the same gear lol, yeah I found that using my lineman makes for a smoother climb. I only really use it when I am moving the rope, but it makes it easier for sure, plus if I need to transverse a limb it is already out. You should look into an OHM tether locker, much easier to use than the gear tie imo. Nice video, very well explained for folks.

Excellent video. Lots of different variations you can make on this. I echo ChrisThomas1464 that you shouldn't unhook your linemens belt on the way up. You should always have at least two points of attachment to the tree. Relying solely on your tether when you are moving your stick is one failed part away (rope, madrock, harness loop etc) from the ER or morgue. Keep at it and stay safe!
Thanks for the feedback. If I use climbing sticks, I don’t take my lineman’s off. However, in one-sticking, that is not possible when you swing to get your stick below you.
If you have a way to do that or you fully keep your lineman’s on when you perform your stick-grab, please demonstrate!

What length is your EWO stick? I saw another video with the 15 inch and he said he wished he got the 18 inch for an easier climb transition from the lower step to top of the platform. Did you have that similar experience? I imagine your experience might be different since you use the lineman's rope through your climb. Great video of your process!
I have the 12” and wouldn’t change it. Super easy to hang on any bag and you’re exactly right: the linesman’s is super helpful to get up the tighter stick.

Is that a CRUZR dump pouch that you keep you rappel rope in? How big is it. What length of rope do you have?
Hi Paul, it is indeed. Same one found here: www.cruzr.shop/product/saddle-bag/
It is 8.x6, but the top half is a really soft and quiet material so if you don't have it filled, you can 'cave in' the top and it shrinks the size of the bag... they are really great.
I carry one on each hip. The left one has: spare figure 8, carabiner, Tethrd HYS strap, and lineman rope. Right hip has carabiner, Madrock SafeGuard, and 35' of resctech rope for rappel/tether.

Thanks for the feedback! It was expensive getting started, but this season so far, I have had to replace NOTHING after dozens and dozens upon dozens of climbs. I inspect my rope (all 32’ of tether/rappel and lineman’s), safeguard (hinge and lever), and webbing/straps on saddle.
It was around $250 for the custom EWO stick and around the same for the Cruzr XC package which included the saddle, lineman’s, 2 carabiners, 2 pouches. I still feel that is a great deal. I have had zero issues with the XC saddle and virtual no sign of wear. Great product.
I initially bought Hawk Helium climbing sticks, Predator platform/bag. Don’t use em. I use a Horn Hunter fanny pack and the EWO stick fits on that with ease since it’s not huge or bulky. I can walk in with my bow in hand and everything else small on my back. Can’t tell you how many times I got snagged with the helium sticks… never with the EWO. It hurt a bit to make the initial investment, but soooo worth it. Let me know what you’ve gotten since you left your comment!
That 8mm oplux and made for the repel device! It’s not in spec
It’s only off by .5mm. It works great even in rain with the safeguard. It’s the only thing I use that is not spec and it’s barely out of spec. There are videos of testing this scenario on UA-cam.

Hi Beau… that is the 12”. Great size for lashing onto bag… so easy in the morning in the dark and never snags on anything branches, etc

You didn’t mention anything about the Madrock not being rated for 8mm rope which is the size of your rappel line. The smallest it’s rated for is 8.9mm. I do know people use them but safety calls for a kong

I did not mention it and you are exactly correct. However in dry, wet, and icy conditions I’ve never come close to having slippage issues. That is the only gamble I take in my setup but it’s a very minor gamble based on the physics of the safeguard.
Thanks for bringing that up as everyone should know the ratings for their gear.
Edit: the kong is great, but itself imposes safety threat in that you have to transfer to a rappel device at hunting height. Yes it’s easy but you still have to move to another device. The unsung brilliance of the safeguard is the ability to immediately get out of a tree at any time during the climb. I love using short tether (with kong). I just don’t like the weird transfer and multiple clinking carabiners up top to get to my 8, setup my autoblock, then rappel. Too many steps.

That is the Madrock Safeguard. You can find them online in many places.
No issues slipping with the 8mm rope? I lost my 9 mm this fall and didn’t try my 8mm in the safeguard, looks like I should have tryed it
I wouldn't sell anything that was remotely dangerous... I have two kids I need to go home to... with that being said, NO issues at all. Wet/dry it works great with Safeguard. There is one caveat however. I sometimes like to use figure 8 to change it up and that doesn't work as well because it's harder to back up 8mm with prussik unless you have 6mm cord. With the safeguard or grigri, etc you will not have any issues with 8mm since those rely purely on gravity. I do not back up my safeguard minus an overhand bite on the tail end while i'm at hunting height and do not use a prussik for rappel with SG. The 8mm packs up nice and tight too.

How do you like it with the standard bottom step instead of the new ultimate lower step. Trying to decide if I'd rather have the weight savings or the bigger stepping platform. Thanks.
When I saw the new bottom step I almost ran right out and ordered it, but glad I didn’t. That step is very useful, but not necessary to go bigger than standard. There are many times where when getting in the tree for an actual hunt, I may have not gotten my stick in an optimal spot and have a branch at head height or something. I will have to stand on that step for a moment and clear the branch/obstacle or pause and re-asses where to move. With your hunting boots on, it’s not uncomfortable. Point being, having more material is not necessary. They are light and do exactly what they have to do. Once you are settled and hunting, they do not provide any strategic advantage for you as you will be able to leverage the top platform for all foot holds.
EDIT: I still stand behind the beauty of the Ultimate Platform design. If you stand straighter, the front edge angle provides a perfect way for you to stretch your calves. If you’re a leaner, it’s the perfect angle for your boot heels to catch and let it ride.
@@abwmedia22 Are you still happy with the 8mm Resc Tech rope? Any experience with Kong Duck vs Ropeman 1? Trying to decide between 9 mm & 8 mm rope and if a cheaper option like Sterling HTP which is cheaper will be just as good. Any issue with the Madrock with 8mm rope? Thanks!
@@michaellaura1231 rule number one…. Don’t go cheaper on rope. It’s what keeps you from being dead. Short answer to your question: LOVE the resc tech… I will almost definitely be using it 80-90% of the time this season. I have Canyon CIV that I use when I know I need more height (it’s 38’ as opposed to my 32’ Resc Tech.
I still stand by the 8mm with the Safeguard too. Wet and dry, it performs exactly how you want it to. Never any slips… never any unwanted travel… ever. When you climb, be deliberate and focused. You will be safe, but get good rope!

I can't grasp the whole "lineman belt is gonna save you if you fall". All it does is allow you to lean back(if you have stable footing), which you shouldn't be doing if you're climbing up anyways. If you fall, that lineman belt isn't gonna sintch down on anything. It's just gonna fall with you. I run two separate tether systems. A small one for transition work, and a my main repelling tether. IMO lineman belts are only good for spiked shoe tree climbing. Like all lineman use lol but to each their own
Hi there and thanks for the comment. The most important thing to keep in mind here is the lineman belt on the other side of the tree must be higher than your waist. If you lose footing it WILL arrest your fall. The lineman is not for leaning, that’s what the tether is for.
I think the lineman belt will stop a fall somewhat. If you have it positioned above your waist, if you were to fall, because you weigh more than the rope you will drop a little quicker. To me that will cause the backside of the lineman rope to catch the tree. Now, your gonna eat some bark for sure and you'll probably gonna be in a precarious situation. But at least you would be able to grab the tree with your arms in an emergency. I can't see a scenario where you would want only the lineman belt but It should do something.
8.9 mm to 11 mm rope for that mad rock your risking your life on that small diameter 8mm resteck rope be careful or your gonna slide straight to your death
