Saw Amythyst Kiah in Charleston,SC along with Rhiannon Giddens.Amythyst was the opener for Rhiannon. If you get a chance to see her....take it...she's great!!
I have never heard Cori played like this, I reckon she either transposed this version herself or learned from someone who did. There's so many great things going on here, the precise driving syncopation of the drop thumb, the smooth back-phrasing, when she hangs on a measure like that it makes chills run down my spine. Amythyst Klah is that new old time sound. 🔥
Damn! Bringing more than a touch of the blues to this mountain banjo tune. I love the way the lyrics are phrased, and that voice... that voice. Incredible range! Inspiring stuff for a banjo player :)
I had the great pleasure of seeing her live this past Sunday-she blew the audience (and me) away! A standing ovation-not bad for an "opening act"-and well deserved. Fantastic vocalist and musician!
Amythyst you're amazing!! I absolutely ADORE your album Dig. Your rendition of Aragon Mill absolutely touches the soul and brings tears to my eyes. I wish you the best!
I just now blundered across this singer/musician by accident. WOW! What a voice! I don't know what "genre" this falls into-- it sounds like Appalachian "mountain music" to me-- but to hell with classifications, it's terrific no matter what it's called.
Black folk played "country" music long ago, but the machinations of the recording industry erased that part of the Country heritage. This revivalist is presenting an update of how it might have sounded then, and how it sounds now that it's being rescued. Genres are mystifications of the origins of musical styles.
Holy fuck.. You are the reacarnation.... Powerful, strong, that what everything Holy that may follow you. 😱👏👏👏👏👏👏👏Hats off massively 👌🙏no more words shall describe x
My ears are trippin. I hear her and Lenny Kravits with Marshall amps on 10 rockin out to Black myself. Im hearing Funkadelic and Richie Havens and Odetta and Tracy and harmonica the honesty of folk country and blues......awsome
In only a matter of days I have become a huge fan. Her voice puts me in mind of Tracy Chapman but her style is all Amythyst! Powerful, Unique, pure.
The beauty of this.....Appalachian music with a truly modern twist.....mix of African, Irish, Scottish....go girl!
Love the wingtips!

Seems to me she's doing something similar to what Jimmie Rogers did in 20's and 30's albeit somewhat more modern. Pretty interesting stuff.
