Wow I’m a mixed black trans woman and it made me cry watching this. I’ve never seen a someone who looks like me playing music like this it’s a revelation and the start of something beautiful for me.
❤ I'm a 70 year old white man that grew up in the Mississippi Delta, during segregation in a family of Tennant farmers on various cotton plantations. I have never been so moved by a song. I cry every time I listen to it. Such a POWERFUL song, and I GET exactly what she's saying. We didn't have to "check" ourselves before entering any businesses, or drinking from a water fountain ect. We were seen as trash because of our social/economic status but, at least we were free. The black people had it way worse. We are all of the same blood, created EQUALLY. Anyone that needs a few more lifetimes of evolution!
truly awesome defiance & joy, my favourite performance of this anthem - even sat in my room watching still can't help but spontaneously applaud at the end!!
Often I've been mistaken. I'd love to record this. but I'm not black, nor could I grasp the full scope of the cultural richness. This performance is a 10!!! AWESOME SONG. I'd like to see a Blues cover. eh?
This group advertises itself with photos featuring the hottest woman looking like the leader and all of them holding banjos. The live show features the woman (?) on the periphery of the frame in the promo photos running the entire show, while the other three backup sing unremarkably and dance in front of a mostly white backing band...and zero banjos, despite banjo playing being referenced in the song itself. Can you imagine putting together a group wholly based on black identity, whose hit song is about black identity, and then hiring older white dudes to play key instrumental roles? Also, how does this song come out sounding Nashville? Based on the chord progressions it sounds like an empowerment song about messing up your boyfriend's car after he cheats on you
It is likely this is a house band for the event that backs up every performer presenting at an honors or awards show. I have seen Our Native Daughters live and the band is made up of the players from Rhiannon Giddens's performing band, notably her husband, multi-instrumentalist Francisco Turissi. These women are all multi-instrumentalists and have successful individual careers. Their collaboration was commissioned by Smithsonian Folkways and the accompanying documentary details their work and the fact that African Culture and Black talent have been written out of Americana and Folk Music history. Every time I've seen Allison Russel her band is all female. But I have to say there is something very powerful about these four women leading a white male band and singing Black Myself. My how the tables have turned. I love it.
I'm not black myself but I know great music when I hear it. Whew!!!

I’d like to hear this on Kroger radio please.
Fucking amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Just caught her performance on CBS Sessions. Wow, just, WOW!! Musical find of the year so far!!
She can frigging PLAY too. Her banjo work is sick. Check out Carolina chocolate drops too, they have some bangers
Is that Dirk Powell on the squeeze box?
Yes. He produced and performed on their CD that includes this song.
Pick up that bsnjo and jsm with me anytime you want 🙂👍
SHIVERS.
Is that Keith Richard on lead guitar?
This ancient hippy likes.
WHY wasn't Amythyst listed FIRST in this video??? It's HER song.
Not sure this is the reason, but it does reflect the way you see them on the screen going left to right.
Anyone know who the drummer is?
I think it's Brady Blade. He and Buddy Miller (guitar and bandleader in this) were in Emmylou Harris' Spyboy .
@@jeffreyday2414 Thank you!
Is this Country Soul ?
