This is absolutely the best Takoyaki recipe I've ever seen, I'm actually going to buy a pan and try it. Thank you for inspiration and very descriptive steps. You make it look so easy.
I have bought pans and gadgets to make yummy food. They always end up in my cupboard! I try, I fail and to the back of the cupboard it goes! As much as I love Takoyaki, I know I will fail so I won't even attempt buying the pan! 🤣 Best of luck and lmk how it goes. 🤙
I've been cooking takoyaki for a year now, gotta say it's one of the best street food i've ever loved. I usually cook twice the batter to make it very round and creamy inside. Usually the cooking time is around 15 minutes until all of them are brown. It's a really fun and delicious dish
It seems in Japanese cuisine, one should have a large pitcher of kombu water in the kitchen or refrigerator ready to go because it's used everywhere and requires so much time beforehand to infuse.
You can add some more batter to the pan when you do the first turning, easy way to make them look pretty even if you mess up with the turning a bit. Very nice recipe!
Another great recipe chef Taku. I may need to invest in a Takoyaki pan after watching this. I have been craving these since we had them in Japan so I went and bought some prefrozen ones but my husband complained as there was not enough octopus in them so I was just thinking I will need to see if I can find out how to make them. You must have read my mind!
No worries Desii!! If you got your Takoyaki pan, you can also try to cook with different stuff!!! Adding cheese, using prawn instead, etc. Possibility is endless!!
I remember the first time i had takoyaki, I had ordered something else entirely, got the wrong order, said "eh" not knowing what it was, and was forever changed by how freaking amazing it was.
Thank you so much for the recipe! This is the most complete and easy to understand one of many I've watched! Especially the part of handling the takoyaki pan is the absolute best for the beginner! Very much appreciate it.
I did my first attempt at takoyaki today. Rolling and shaping the balls is tricky and I messed some of them up, but they still tasted great! I'm going to keep at it, practice makes perfect.
Awesome 👍👍. During a lockdown last year I watched 僕はまだ君を愛さないことができる (Boku wa Mada Kimi o Aisanai Koto ga Dekiru). In that drama they were making and eating this all the time. Now I can have a go too 👍👍 … have to get a pan first. It looks absolutely delicious … your neighbours must be in seventh heaven when you cook on the balcony 😃👍.
A very similar looking dish is prepared in Tamil Nadu ( A South Indian State) called Panniyaram which is made only from batter sweetened with a traditional natural sugar called Mandavalam ( or Gud in Hindi) and there is no use of any kind of meat. Even the oven used is exactly same. This could be because of a monk called Bodhi-Dharaman ( Daruma In Japanese ) travelled to China & Japan from India and had great impact in spreading of Buddhism and thus also might had some influence of Indian food culture. Thus toriyaki is very similar to panniyaram. I may or may not be accurate but I don't have intention of downplaying Japanese culture.

Great video again. Only one thing. It's bout the art of the food and helping us try this at home. The music was to up beat I felt like I should be driving or dance but I wanted to watch how chef work is done :) oh I love how a simple propane stove is all is needed. No excuses nice
I tried this recipe and forgot to put the eggs but end up with even more crispy outer skin with soft and more chewy interior.. I kinda like it. So now whenever I made this I divided the batter into 2, half with egg and the other half not. Just to have more fun and options 😁😁
Awesome recipe. I would have liked to see how to plate them with other sides or sauces. This is my favourite Japanese food channel. Cheers from Canader eh!
This looks delicious, thank you for sharing it! Do you happen to know if the recipe works with just rice flour? I have celiac disease, so I can't eat any wheat or some other grains.
I’d heard of takoyaki before but I really didn’t know what’s in it- now I can see that it’s kind of similar to clam cakes where I’m from! But with octopus instead of clams, and that perfect round shape instead of a bumpy lump :-)
Nice one . Felt the video ended before you took it off and plated it . Also can you substitute dashi powder instead of kombu and bonito since it's hard to get ?
Yes you can use dashi powder Elvis!! The reason that the video ended before plated was because most people skipped that part in the past videos. So I am trying to find a different type of ending 👍😉
Hey chef, I tried making this and so far it's going pretty well! However, I'm having a little trouble with the sauce. What kind of BBQ sauce would you recommend?
Totally not the chef but I feel like sweet baby rays would be good here, just because it has a really good amount of sweetness in it that would pair well with the batter

That pan is very similar to one I use for aebelskivers (pancake balls)
How do you know its the best recipe if u haven't tried it yet?
You got octopus laying around but not a pan?
@Fist Bump nope, staying steadfast on the nope.
"How many dish can you make using a kombu?"
Chef Labo : "Yes"
Chef Labo : "I'll show you the way of the kombu"

If you can find near your location, there is also liquid version of dashi soup stock sold in bottles. I use it since it is easier and more convenient.
Uncle Roger : MSG is the king of flavour
Chef Labo : Let me introduce my Kombu....
I mean, konbu is one of the strongest sources of naturally occuring sources of MSG. Both are correct.

Besides getting the octopus, my biggest problem is obtaining a takoyaki pan. Where is a good place to get one without being charged a lot?
A quick search on Amazon will give you plenty of results. If you have an Asian market, they may sale some, as well.
Go to the Asian market, trust me. It'll be cheaper.

can this be made with any other kind of seafood? my family won't eat octopus unfortunately but this looks delicious!
You can try shrimp or prawns. It will still taste similar.
By the way, the "tako" in takoyaki means "octopus" and "yaki" means "grilled".
I've seen the takoyaki first time in One piece 😍 and I really wanna try it

I don't know how I got here but I'm glad I did
I have a question. Isn't the batter undercooked on purpose? Or how else do you get the creamy center?
The batter will be gelatinised as you cook. It is different to undercook, so you’ll get creamy texture by following this recipe 👍
