An Army civilian in Texas is facing significant prison time for an alleged scheme in which prosecutors say she stole $100 million in military funds in order to fund a lavish lifestyle.Mello allegedly used the stolen funds to amass a real estate portfolio of 31 properties, a fleet of 78 vehicles, more than $18 million in various bank accounts linked to her, and a jewelry collection, according to court records. Some of the luxury listings include a roughly $3.1 million, eight-bedroom, 55-car garage, 58-acre estate in Maryland and an approximately $1.1 million home in San Antonio, Texas.

The Army shouldn't be able to donate money to any charity. The money is allocated from taxpayers to the Army. Not for the army to give away.
Excellent point.👍👍
They actually force troops to sign up and pay 1 dollar or more to a charity of their choosing out of their pay, this is what the Marines do.
@@CIAG4PNPThe Marines aren't the Army but yup the Army shouldn't be allowed to give away their money when they haven't even paid their own enlisted.

I was just thinking the same goddamn thing. How the fuck are you gonna just, donate taxpayer money? Not even to a legitimate charity, how do you fuck up so bad you end up giving ONE HUNDRED MILLION DOLLARS of tax payer money to some trashy broads' scam charity? You'd think they'd like, do a background check, drug test, finger print check, mouth swab, etcetera. Hundred Mill is an ungodly amount of CASH!

Two years in a row in the Reserves my Unit refused to pay any per diem for food, which meant we had to rely on DFAC food which didn't align with our training schedule and the DFACs were notoriously bad for being unreliable and closed all the time. As a result, we had to pay for basic food out of our own pockets (MRE food doesn't count.).
DTS? What?
I worked as a contractor in the command she worked in. The money she embezzled was supposed to support Army MWR programs, primarily meant for youth at Army installations - youth centers, child development centers, after school education, and so forth. The army doesn’t donate to charity, even though her company has charity in its name. Many non-profits do work on military bases, doing lawn mowing, building cleaning, recycling programs, and so forth. Two things bother me a lot about this case. One, she stole money that was meant for youth programs so she stole from the taxpayers and from children - double shameful. Two, how broke the internal accounting/audit protocols are. On our contract, we had to submit receipts for every expense when we traveled, even a dollar at a parking meter. Every nickel was accounted for. But, she rips off $100 million over 7 years and doesn’t get caught. Complete failure of internal controls.
No one will ever lose a job after the audit or OIG visit either. Thanks for clarifying some of the variables.
We are so over taxed, that it took them 6 years to figure out an idiot was embezzling 100 mil! Imagine how much the "smart" people are getting away with...

It wasn't the FBI, technically.
It was prohibition agents working in the Department of the Treasury who were on Al Capone's trail.

Yeah! Only a congressman should be able to do that!
As long as they filled out their taxes correctly and have legal explanations to where the money is coming from they don't care, they got there cut.

Why the hell is anyone paying taxes anymore. It doesn’t seem to matter at this point. They just keep printing
Exactly
Taxes are a way for the local, state and federal government to give back to the community.
-infrastructure
-construction
-import/export
-goods & services
-defense
-social welfare programs
-education
And so on. Imagine how can a government work tax free at a national level.
@@droman608 You do realize that the government takes more than they give right? The GAO estimates that less than 1/4 of the dollars the government takes in ever goes to what it is intended for.
Infrastructure is a slush fund. Example how California voted to raise gas prices to pay for roads and then we found out all the money was actually going to democrat campaigns because there actually wasn't a clause in the bill that mandated the spending had to be on roads.
Construction, Imports and exports and goods/services aren't done by the government, they are done by private companies. The government does not produce anything.
Welfare has lead to the increase in poverty because businesses now have to pay higher taxes so they can't afford to hire as many people, and those they do hire have a lot of regulations so they don't want to hire anyone without prior work history.
The more we have spent on education, the lower our education has gone. As an example, there is something like 60% of home schoolers who end up graduating from college, but less than 10% of public schoolers will, even though before the DOE that rate was closer to 30%
Defense is probably the most cost efficient part of the government, but it is still wildly overpriced as we are paying the defense bills of over 50 countries when they should be paying for their own defense.
@@droman608Oh but they can send billions of that to other countries in “aid” and lose 2.3 trillion dollars during 9/11….yeah.

To be fair Scotus has ruled the income tax is illegal, twice.
This actually did not happen.
@@mrtophat12 It in fact did happen for example: Pollock v. Farmers’ Loan and Trust Company, (1895), U.S. Supreme Court case in which the court voided portions of the Wilson-Gorman Tariff Act of 1894 that imposed a direct tax on the incomes of American citizens and corporations, thus declaring the federal income tax unconstitutional. The decision was mooted (unsettled) in 1913 by ratification of the Sixteenth Amendment to the federal Constitution, giving Congress the power “to lay and collect taxes on incomes.”
Moreover, the Sixteenth Amendment needs to be repelled, as it was allegedly brought into being due to it being a "more dependable" source of revenue than the previous tariffs the federal government depended on for revenue previously.
But now that every transaction is documented down to the penny and multiple transactions can be made at the touch of a button, evading paying tariffs and the time between transactions compared to 1913 has dramatically decreased, the need for a "more dependable" source of revenue has been rendered largely moot.
And lets be real we've seen on multiple occasions how the government flippantly spends that money with reckless abandon, its about time that their purse strings get tightened in order to force them to be more fiscally responsible.
