When i was doing my own automotive work, it was 1/2" and 9/16". Now it's 10mm and 14mm, and don't even get me started on Torx bits... I will say that Wiha makes amazing screwdrivers. My set is going strong after 15 years of abuse. The only ones i've had to replace were very small, and an idiot co-worker was using a flat blade on a phillips head screw. Not the fault of the tool.
I only D.I.Y. mechanic work, but so far I haven't had the 10 mill catastrophe I always here about. Heck, I even dumped a brand new socket set on the side of the road once and still recovered everything.
I kept a spare in the housing of my multi-tip screw driver. I later found most the tips but not the 10mm or the driver. I wonder if we flooded the national parks with 10mm's if the 411's would stop happening.
Fun fact AutoZone sells like a 10pc assortment of every 10mm socket type imaginable for like $15... While I was at Polk, we had a guy get locked out of their room and their roommate was on leave, so we scrounged some brass coat hangers, stretched them out and I used my door to figure out the length needed and the angle to hook the door handle. Spent about 40 minutes (and maybe some removal of rubber under the door) but I got the door open and felt very proud of myself :)

I've lost so many 10mm sockets I order them by the handful from Amazon. Somewhere there is a separate space time continuum where only 10mm sockets get sucked into.
