    The Largest Stolen Valor Fraud in United States History was discovered in February 2022, and the Story HOPEFULLY ends today. Sarah Cavanaugh, AKA Sarah Bregler of East Greenwich Rhode Island, claimed to have been a wounded Marine Veteran with tours in Iraq and Afghanistan where she was engaged in combat, wounded, and later awarded a Bronze Star with Valor. Over the course of several years Sarah used her false wounded Veteran status to scheme Veteran Charities, the VA, VFW and other organizations out of hundreds of thousands of dollars. Sarah's court dates ended with her sentencing this month. Join me as we break down what she was charged with.

    My wife was the executive director of guardians for heros. One time she asked me to vet a person who’s story just didn’t add up and I was in the army as well as this individual (or so they claimed) After this person told me their story, I asked who were you with and between what dates did you serve. I mean, don’t get me wrong, she couldn’t be giving out advice all willy-nilly now. There’d have to be oversight to make sure she’s not committing fraud through or upon those she’d be assisting but, if she can lie and obtain over $200,000 for her whole, healthy and selfish self then, imagine what she and others of her ilk could do for someone who actually qualified and needed it.

      Well, a big mistake people make is "Most don't do X, so anyone that does X should be shunned", but that's a lazy approach to take when plenty of people handle things differently. I'm not attacking you or your way of doing things, but it's unfair of people trying to use their own experiences or methods to decide what should be normal for others. It's not always that simple, and people that don't handle things the "normal" way are no less deserving of a fair chance and assistance.

Sorry about the douchebags in this profession, we don't like them either. The problem is that our "self-regulating" comes from the Bar Association, which, frankly, causes attorneys to care more about results than justice. And unfortunately our system has started to reward that. It's frustrating as hell but I'll do my part to make sure justice is done. It just sucks in the meantime.

      A defense attorney should be zealous and work to protect their client. It’s their purpose. Prosecutors don’t openly and fairly prosecute. They stack their deck to get the best chance to convict; which is why the defense does the same. Real trials are not like Hollywood.

    • @clouded_sycamore
      @clouded_sycamore Рік тому +7

      Yes, the whole purpose of a defense attorney is to hold the State accountable in their prosecution of an individual. Before the weight of the State comes down on a person, it's the job of a defense attorney to ensure the State did their job and conducted a proper investigation. A defense attorney can recommend their client take a plea deal if the State has plenty of evidence against a defendant, however, the decision to take it or not lies with the defendant. For me personally, every person is innocent until provent guilty. For the public, fewer and fewer people see it that way, which is troubling.

Their job isn't to determine whether she did it, their job is to defend her in any way they can. If she says she didn't do it, fight to prove that. If she did, fight to mitigate the damage. It’s very sad to hear this mess but Justice was finally served. As a disabled veteran myself knowing that I need a service dog but do not feel as if I’m worthy of getting one. Then hearing, this is crazy, for the people who really are in pain every day and enduring it to look and seem “normal”. The fact that she has been helped then anyone that I know scares me because people like myself are out there and need these services. To all the people who has served. Thank you. You are amazing people. Do not let the time you served this country devalue your time to keep pushing forward. Keep safe everyone.

    So, I'm a "service connected" Veteran that was Permanently disabled by the SSA. I was only at 50% per the VA. Went back to the VA for increase due to my Service Connection getting worse even requiring me to undergo 4 knee surgeries and a total hip replacement due to my disability. The VA, with a shit-ton of medical EVIDENCE says I'm "only" 90% disabled. They said that Social Security disability rating means dick.

    I have a funny (kind of) VA story. One time I threw my back out pretty good. Couldn't bend over, walk, sit, stand or lay down without extreme pain. Went to VA. They wanted me to got to x Ray or something. I wanted to walk to the clinic. They wouldn't let me. I explained save the wheelchair for someone who needs it. They basically said sit in the damn chair or we get security and you get tied to a bed. I sit In the chair and they wheel me out to the hallway. We come outside the door and wouldn't you know it there sitting in the waiting room is a vet with no legs. I exclaimed this is exactly why I don't need this f###### chair.
    I do know that VA she was working at, it's really podunk. I also have a story of a blind Vietnam brother who can hardly walk. That's a long one though and they now treat him a bit different since I made a stink.

Her lying and getting that much help is so frustrating to me. It's been 3 weeks btw and it still hasn't healed.

    I am actually a disabled veteran. I actually have a lot of health problems too from military service....... I don't want to say too much, but I don't understand how anyone can do what she did. It does make me angry to hear, but I am glad to see justice being served. I had to fight VA for 16 years before I got some of the help I get now. I spoke with another veteran who said it took him 40 years to get his help. I think what sarah did is very despicable; however, maybe she will learn from her bad choices while she is in prison.
