Great to see you call out QC issues. Manufacturers don't listen to individual customers, but they probably listen to hosts like you guys, which helps everybody, including them.

Yeah it's sad that even fairly expensive interior doors can still be junk. Manufacturers need to be called out because it should be unacceptable but they get away with it more and more now days. Hopefully quality will make a comeback for people like us who take pride in our work but the way it looks I wouldn't hold my breath, unfortunately.

Great video. Think about maybe making a shim jig for your table saw. I made one from a picture online and I haven't bought shims in years. I use all the scraps from my jobs. I do quite a few door and window installs in remodels and it's saved me a small fortune. Plus the quality of shims are much better than the ones at the big box stores. Just wanted to throw the idea out there. My favorite channel on UA-cam. Great work guys.

One more video in the vault guys!!! Always the pain, forgive me...don't all garage doors have to be self-closing? I know the first floor, yes, not sure about the second floor...
In my little shack in the woods...most all of my interior walls had knotty pine tongue-n-groove boards. I tried to give them away, but sadly no takers. I have a total of 13 interior doors, so I milled them down and fabricated 13 barn doors...9 standard hung, 1 sliding barn door, and 3 pocket doors. At Lowe's cost of about $300 per door...I saved quite a bit...enough to buy my cabinet plywood!!!
Anyways...watching your videos sure brings back memories of why my back hurts in the mornings!!!
Keep up the great works guys!!!

Stud pack at 18:30 you could correct some of the reveal by closing that 1/8 gap between the joint at top head jamb and strike side jamb. Then check the hinge side to see if the reveal is the same after closing the gap on strike side. Then set reveal on the rest of the jamb. Another little tip on a prehung if its pre bored and doesn't have the threaded plastic insert in the backset hole you can just tape a short piece 1 1/2" of 7/8 wood dowel through the backset hole into the jamb to keep the lock side of the door from swinging around while setting the jambs. After hinge side is nailed pull out plug or threaded plastic insert and set strike side jamb.

Get yourselves a corrugated nailer before you do all the trim in the main house. Use glue and your pinch clamps but then shoot a couple corrugated fasteners across your miters and now you don’t have to wait for the glue to dry. I have a Senco and it works great. I’m pretty sure I saw Tim Uhler from awesome framers using the same technique for all their exterior casings.

I've installed a few automatic door bottom Seal and the easiest way, I figure, is to rout out the grove in the bottom of the door using a full size hand router with edge guides on both sides of the door that you don't need to make. I have a Bosch 2.3 HP router and a Bosch edge guide that two edge guides can be mounted on the provided rails in the kit.
If you attempt this install, don't cut any of the extra length of the rubber seal on the button side of the door drop until the door is installed. I cut what I thought was the right length before install and now I have a small gap you can see light through.
These are great for bedroom doors to seal the door bottom from noise and light. Also used to seal the door to our media room for sound getting out. You can also use weather stripping around the rest of the door to completely seal. Automatic Door Bottom Seals can be found on Amazon for under $100.

My tip for planar floor surfaces... Lay your hardwood flooring first, then use your leveling clips for your tile after cutting a slot in the side of the hardwood to receive the clip. Thinset thickness can be adjusted to set the tile to the right height, just plan to get the finish surfaces close using what substrates you have at your disposal (cement board, ditra, etc.)

    • @MattBehling
      @MattBehling 20 хвилин тому

Forgot to mention, cutting the slot after the hardwood is installed, your biscuit cutter may not work depth wise, I've used a slot cutting bit in my router set at a depth equal to the thickness of my tile.

Door from the garage to the stair is backwards. If someone broke into the garage, they are (3) hinge pins away from getting upstairs. Also, the weatherseal/warranty on most threshold doors only applies on the threshold side. I would say there is a better chance of water spray from the garage side

Take a block of wood and a hammer and just smack the door stop in the direction it needs to be adjusted. Then brad nail it where it should be. If the now mangled staples hold it out from the jamb and cause a gap, take your block and just smack it with the hammer on the face of the stop until it closes up. It's pine, it will conform around the staple. You will never know it was adjusted except a few extra nail holes, and literally takes less than a minute per door.
If you hang a lot of off-the-shelf interior doors, adjusting the stop is a must. I go all the way around the door after hanging it. Though if you have pinched stop like you guys had, it should be addressed before hanging. Same method above works though, I just wouldn't nail it home until the door is installed.

Surprised on a couple code issues-- the double fire door setup makes it look like a separate rental unit. Normally you would just need one separating the garage from the stairs. Also surprised you didn't have spring loaded hinges on the fire doors. Last one... inspectors in California wouldn't allow an in-swinging door that goes into the panelboard working space. I know things are different in Texas though.

What about all that space between the door jam and the rough framing on the striker side for the closet under the stairs. Also, is it important that you use spray foam for windows and doors so it won't expand and bow the door jam in?

It's easier to make a fully flush floor with tile if you use real solid hardwood flooring, aka 3/4" thick hardwood flooring. Ditra-heat membrane with tile can flush out with 3/4" hardwood flooring. Ditra-XL membrane, if you're not using heated floors, can also flush out with 3/4" hardwood flooring. I did it.
Real solid hardwood flooring looks better too.
