A rocky ridge curves east and then south east from Calf Crag, passing over Gibson Knott and the depression of Bracken Hause, before ending at Helm Crag where it falls steeply on all sides. To the north and east of the ridge is the Greenburn valley
Despite its low height Helm Crag sits prominently at the end of a ridge, easily seen from the village of Grasmere and the A591, combined with the distinctive summit rocks which provide the alternative name 'The Lion and the Lamb', makes it one of the most recognised hills in the District.
The summit is unusual, having two short parallel ridges running north west to south east with a hollow in between, the western ridge being the higher. Some distance below the eastern ridge the scene is repeated as, still keeping parallel, a third ridge, ditch and parapet are crossed before the crags are reached. The whole complex initially appears man-made, but is entirely natural. The summit commands views of the Langdale Pikes, Coniston Fells and Eastern Fells.
At either end of the highest ridge are the rock outcrops that ensure Helm Crag's fame. Only one can be seen from any point in the surrounding valleys, and they have a variety of names depending upon the profile seen from the particular vantage point. The northwestern outcrop is the true summit of the fell, a tricky little scramble being needed to stand on the top. It is variously called "The old lady playing the organ" when seen from Mill Gill, "The howitzer" from the summit of Dunmail Raise and "The lion and the lamb" or "The lion couchant" from a point in between. The southern outcrop is prominent from Grasmere and this is the traditional "Lion and the lamb".
Between Calf Crag and Helm Crag the ridge narrows to perhaps a hundred yards in width, gradually curving to the south east on its one and a half mile course. There are several tops on this section, Gibson Knott being halfway along.
The southern face above Far Easedale is rocky, Horn Crag being the principal feature. The northern side drops more gradually to the upper gathering grounds of Greenburn Bottom. There is little loss of height going westward from the summit before the climb to Calf Crag begins on a broadening ridge.
Steel Fell stands away from the main spine of the Central Fells, forming the end of one of the many east ridges of High Raise. Intermediate between the two are Codale Head and Calf Crag. Steel Fell is bordered by Wythburndale to the north and the valley of Green Burn to the south-west. The eastern face looks down on Dunmail Raise.
Being triangular in plan, Steel Fell has three principal ridges. The northern ridge drops quickly to the head of Thirlmere at Steel End, while that to the south-east falls gradually toward Grasmere village, beginning down Cotra Breast. The eastern ridge connects to Calf Crag, the next fell in the popular circuit of the Greenburn valley, crossing a narrow depression with a scattering of small tarns.

Having watched the video Andy I agree with you to start at Helm Crag first. It's a cracking route. A lovely way to spend half an hour watching a smashing video. Cheers and give Billy a big hug from me. ATB David

Hi Andy, super video and a cracking round trip. I agree with you regarding Steel Fell its a killer walking straight up it. Last year we walked through Greenburn Valley for the first time, what a beltin route that is to calf crag and came back down Steel Fell. Lots of huffing and puffing from people ascending it. That was also the first time i realised there was that zig zag path going up to Helm Crag when we saw a few people heading up there. Cheers Andy ATB

The zig zag path saves the long trod up or down the pitched path on the front of Helm Grag and walking through the village.
First time I've done the route this way round...a definite winner for me 😉😊👍🏻

One advantage of winter walking.. No troublesome Bracken. Another great video (despite the weather) that had me digging my pics out from the archives.

Great reminder of a circuit I've not done for a while, although I remember that bracken fest going up Helm Crag from that side. The entire string section did well to get up there with their instruments! 🤣 I like doing it that way round as it avoids a long walk back into Grasmere village from the end of Steel Fell if you're parked in that layby. If you go up Helm Crag from the village up the 'usual' route up the nose, that feels like a long slog on tarmac at the end. Yes, you didn't have your usual good weather mojo but it did look atmospheric and I think I like Connolly's version of bad weather rather than Walfred Rainwrights...

Lol I've been lucky ain't I with the weather....i think it's more on account of how long I'm up the Hill making videos and flying the drone it's gonna dry up eventually 🤣🤣
These days I just love spending all day doing shorter walks and filming.

Excellent as always. My very first Lakeland walk, but did it the traditional way of Steel Fell first and boy talk about a lung blower of a climb. When we get around to doing this again, totally doing Helm Crag first. Absolutely love the route, well everything but the bog. When I did it, it was pretty atmospheric and rainy for bits of it. Stunning views down to Thirlmere, the Helveyln massive, and down Easdale valley. We even got RAF jets which scared the holy hell out of us as they came out of nowhere. And in early May we missed out on the waist high bracken, ha

Ey up Marra, ey up Billy. Cracking route, I love the Greenburn round. I’ll never get bored of exploring the summit of Helm Crag, it’s an amazing place. I need to get back up to Calf crag. The last time I was there you could see bugger all. 🤣
I’m hoping to be back in the Lakes on Sunday, not decided where yet though.
    All the best guys

Another great vid, Andy and Billy. When we did Steel Fell last year, we saw a couple going up that zig zag path to Helm Crag and thought we'd give that a go at some point. Each time we've done these fells, we've come down via Far Easedale so might give this horseshoe a go when we're up in a few weeks' time. Thanks for the inspiration. ATB Brian and Jill 😊😊

Hi Andy (and Billy). I seem to get ticks most times when I walk in Scotland. Can't recall ever finding one on me Lakes. Do you think it's becoming more of a problem?

    • @RockStar67
      @RockStar67  Місяць тому

Hiya Richard...I'd say the Tick problem is no worse in regards of numbers biggest problem is they carry Lyme disease in all the UKs national parks...I've only had three on me in probably thousands of miles over the years the thought of catching Lyme disease is scary.
Billy gets treated every month all year round he gets one or two but not many....some dogs get absolutely covered.
Thanks for watching Pal very much appreciated 😊
