Mardale Ill Bell & High Street....Another fantastic Ridge Walk In't Far East (The Lake District)
GPX Download Of Route...
drive.google.com/file/d/1pAsPGEyZptL4_ebICiDyzxeiOmWRZqql/view?usp=drivesdk
Mardale Ill Bell sends out a short grass-topped spur, Lingmell End, which splits the head of the valley into two.
The north-eastern face of Mardale Ill Bell forms the craggy backdrop to Blea Water. This perfect corrie tarn is the deepest in the Lake District at 207 feet (63 m).
Its outflow feeds Haweswater, joining with that of a second tarn, Small Water. Between the two, Mardale Ill Bell throws out the rocky spur of Piot Crag.
Two tiers of crag drop down to the confluence at Mardale Waters.
South-east of the summit a rough narrowing ridge drops to Nan Bield Pass at 2,100 feet (640 m), before rising again over rocky steps to Harter Fell. Nan Bield was the ancient trading route between Kentmere and the now drowned village of Mardale Green, submerged by the raising of Haweswater in the 1940s. Near the shore of Small Water on the descending path are a number of stone shelters, pointers to the earlier importance of the pass. These each provide refuge for one person in extremis, entrance being via crawling.
North-west from Mardale Ill Bell the grassy ridge crosses a wet depression and then expands into a wide plateau, triangular in plan. High Street and Thornthwaite Crag are at the other two corners, with the Roman road crossing north to south.
The summit has two large cairns on grass, the northern one being the top. The view westwards is confined by higher fells but the Ill Bell ridge and Coniston range are seen to good effect.
Blea Water and Small Water can be brought into sight from the rim of the crags.
High Street is a fell at 828 metres (2,717 ft), its summit is the highest point in the far eastern part of the national park. The fell is named after the Roman road that ran over the summit.
High Street's eastern side is craggy and precipitous as it falls away towards Haweswater Reservoir. There are two tarns underneath the eastern crags - Blea Water and Small Water; Blea Water, in a classic mountain corrie at 200 feet (61 m) is the deepest tarn in the Lake District.
A wall follows the ridge over the flat summit, the highest point is marked by an Ordnance Survey triangulation column which has been painted white. The view stretches from the Pennines in the east to a great arc of Lakeland hills filling the western horizon. The Helvellyn range and Southern Fells are particularly striking.

We've had this on our list for a while now but just not got around to it. Hopefully we will get chance on our next trip in early November. Especially as it's had the rock star seal of approval 🌟 we will most likely go up rough crag and down either nan beild or gatescarth pass depending on how far along we get in the day. It will be our first dabble in that area

Another great vid, Andy and Billy. We love it out round Mardale. We've been up the Rough Crag way several times to High Street then back down over Harter Fell but never over Piot Crag so another one to try when we're up in a week or so. Billy is such a good boy, waiting for you to help him out. The last time we did Rough Crag, we still had our beloved Springer Dylan and we had to heave his bum up a couple of those scrambly bits. He's still with us on our walks - got his collar on our rucksacks so he doesn't miss out ❤❤❤ ATB Brian and Jill 😊😊

Aw you finally got to my favourite Andy. Furthest away from you, but much closer to me. I've spent so much time on these fells and there are so many different circular options. My usual route includes going UP the Rough Crag ridge. Definitely much easier than coming down. Lovely to see an aerial view of it all too. Another great video! Thank you 👏

Definitely 10/10 and such a good video and appreciation of very familiar ground for me, thank you. I probably know the Haweswater fells better than any of them, having spent so much time on them over the years. I'd agree that Rough Crag is a lot easier up than down. So many happy times on Rough Crag, some days just sitting up there overlooking Riggindale when the eagles were still in residence. I have been up and down Piot Crag and it's fine, as you say. A bit slippy sometimes on the grass coming down after wet weather. There are so many circuits possible using either way up onto the ridge and so quiet. Love the shot of Billy contemplating Blea Water... no doubt thinking how am I going to get all those stones out of there?! Look forward to more, Andy, thanks.

Smashing video again Andrew, one of my favourite areas and of course quite convenient for me. Such a great route with so much or interest, I love Blea Water and Small Water and love looking down on them. I went up Mardale Ill Bell by Piot Crag back in June, but accessed it from Small Water outflow and round the corrie - I find the valley route to Blea Water can be rather soggy. at times! Always look forward to your superb videos 👍

Fabulous footage, esp the drone, and the music is so fitting, esp the Catstye cam bit... Billy giving it some welly there on the big drum! And you always make even a familiar circuit seem fresh. Believe it or not, I've yet to do Castye cam. I keep meaning to rectify it! Fabulous sunrise. I love those early mornings too, when you can get ahead of the crowds and any hot weather. Billy might have been some time at Lanty's Tarn and the beck removing all those stones! And he's so surefooted on ground which is tricky for a dog, he's amazing, and it's great that he knows his limits and also goes slow and steady rather than rushing. Wish I was as fleet of foot! Good advice about the chimney and big dogs and thank you for showing where the traverse path goes off. I invariably miss it and my knees and short legs don't thank me on that downclimb!

Done that route a few times and had a fantastic one a couple of December's ago in perfect blue skies, frost and ice. Dunno why, but I always think Swirral Edge is more difficult than Striding Edge. Maybe it's because I've always come down it rather than up. Yep, steep and slippery. Keep up the good work. Cheers, Ozzy.

Another great video, Andy and Billy. Fab drone footage as ever and lovely to see that inversion. We've done both edges numerous times but going up - never fancied going down them so have not done the horseshoe. Might give it a go when we're up in a couple of weeks. ATB Brian and Jill 😊😊

Thanks Brian & Jill very much appreciated and yep descending Swirral Edge is equally (I'd say harder) than Striding Edge....even more so in winter when both ridges become a technical winter Mountain climb. Thanks as always for watching 😊 Tek care stay safe guys ATVB Andy and The ROCK STAR ⭐ 🙏🏻

Just watched this . Thank you for the link. Trained my horse over these fells for Long Distance Riding Competitions for over 15 years. Sadly the partnership came to an end after 25 years in 2022. But me and collie Mick are regularly up there. The drone shots were amazing. So lovely to see that angle. Thank you so much

Fantastic video Andy. Billy did a fantastic job of navigating those scrambles. He is brilliant especially as he is now 8 years old. Well done you for taking us over such hard looking terrain, it didn't look easy!!! I wasn't going to leave a comment as you don't normally acknowledge it but felt I had to do this one last time. Drone footage was great as usual . Thank you. ATB to you, Billy and not forgetting Tracey. X
