My father's family perished in a concentration camp. A few years ago, I took a Mediterranean cruise which stopped in Corfu. I wandered the streets of the island. Signs led me to the historic synagogue. As I stood in front of the wall filled with the names of the Jews of Corfu who were sent to the camps, an old man standing next to me pointed up at the names and then pointed at his chest. He did not speak English and I did not speak Greek. He then took my hand and led me out the front door. Since he had a kind face and warm eyes, I let him lead me across the street from the temple to his shop. In front of the old wooden counters, he turned and opened a drawer. Out came an old, yellowed box. He opened the box and took out an old, worn set of striped clothes with a star of David sewn onto the front.I touched the shirt and felt a feeling of immense sadness that my family had also worn similar clothes as they were led to the "showers." This old man had no idea of my family's history. This is one of those moments in life that stay with you forever.
Thank you for sharing such a touching story. My parents were from Albania and during the war, Jews fled to Albania and the people hid them in their homes protecting them with their lives. It is said the Albanian people never gave up one Jew to the Germans. I wonder if there are any Albanians in Corfu?

I also visited the synagogue in Corfu town where a lady told me the history of the Jews of Corfu. In Rhodes there was a lady who was cleaning the synagogue who showed me her tattooed number on her arm. The era of the Nazis is not so long ago.

Yes of course. It was part of the Venetian Republic for many centuries and many venetians lived there. Actually many families still have the traditional venetian names like Barbarigos, Kornaros, Contarinis, Venieris etc.
@@dekenlst amazing, I know that the national hero of the first Indipendent Greece in XIX century was Mr. Kapodistrias from Corfu, which probably is of Venetian ancestry from the city of Capodistria in Istria (today under Slovenia border)

Now after 57 years I get to see beautiful Corfu via the Internet after reading and studying Gerald Durrell's book "My family and other animals " in 1964 for my GCE literature. Sadly I'm not young enough to travel there now, especiallywith covid19 everywhere. But you bring back literary memories of my teenage years. Thank you my lady.

@@koritsi56 I'm glad you visited the island. It must have been a most nostalgic and memorable trip. However right now many islands in Greece are ablaze. Hope corfu is not one of them.
By the way, I did my GCE in the old school at the junction of Bras Basah Rd and North Bridge Rd in Singapore. Where did you do yours?
@@buayarch at St Cuthberts RC school Bolton and a long way from Singapore. I’ve been back to Corfu a few times but it’s now very touristy because of the new channel 4 adaptation of The Durrells which is only loosely based on the book. It’s no longer my favourite island.

Travelled to Greece in 1967, landed in Athens the day of the military coup. I was rounded up with all the Greek male psssengers (many Ozzies), and separated from the others. When the military realised I was a Kiwi, I was released with sincere apologies. After a few days living in the Plaka, I joined a group of others sailing to Hydra where military rule was more relaxed. Greece, and later Italy, were absolutely fabulous. The history, people, food and scenery, timeless. I hv loved these two countries ever since. Kia ora!

what memories...we travelled through Corfu 40 year ago on our trip around Europe and Oh what an adventure it was. So many memories.

Greece is dope! A place for enjoyment.
Corfu is like all major holiday destinations, if you enjoy the nightlife and beaches it’s buzzin, if you leave the resorts and go exploring there are so many hidden surprises, small cafes, beautiful little villages by the sea, it’s a gorgeous island, cheap and easy to get to, so worth a visit.
" A living symbol . . . the incredible feeling even for us . . . to realize how many persons and how many generations before us did exactly the same thing to the same tree . . . with generosity of its own fruits, it's like a contract between humans and nature"
The poetry and appreciation of their surroundings of this paradise are palpable. These two young men should be a model for a lot of the younger generations that seem preoccupied with the foolishness of self-absorption.

I love all Greek islands but my hearts goes to Santorini, Crete & Rhodes, I can't decide but I will keep visiting these 3 islands :) I also love Rhodes because I can reach Rhodes by a 90 mins ferry from Marmaris Turkey. The only time I passed by Curfu was when I took the Minoan ship from Venice to Athens, a 12 hours journey & I love it. It's not a typical cruise ship, but it offer cabins with different pricing, 3 diff restaurants, a disco :) and lots of space to roam for sunrise/sunset. The bottom level was for cars, cargo trucks etc. European bring their cars, dogs, backpackers paid a low price to sleep on the deck. My German cabin mate got off at Corfu for a spa retreat for few days. I would take this ship again in the future, it's so relaxing to sail along the Adriatic Sea.

Hello, Corfu has been a Greek island since the antiquity!!! It has always been Greek but unfortunatlly after a period of time it was conquered by foreiner rulers like the Venicias but the population was still Greek. The architecture of the island is far from Venician is actually Neoclassical which comes from ancinet Grecce and the Romans copied it as well. Venician architecture is actually a mixure of Byzantine/Constantinupole, Arabic and Gothic mixed together! Which is completlly diferent from the neoclassical paradise of corfu. Even some ionic/spiral features present in some churches that are influenced/presetn in the Italian renesesance churches they derived from ancient Greek features which you can see in our ceramics in our museums. one such example of the ionic use can be seen in the museum stoa of Attalos in Athens... other than that your Chios vlog with your mom was very toucking !

Gerald Durrell' wrote so magicaly about this place in two of his books, its almost impossible not to fall completely in love with each enchanting nuance of this charming video.

I’m Polynesian. My wife and I went there in May because of the British tv show “The Durell” oh it’s more beautiful being there in person. Now I want to go see that abandon village now.

So what? She's explaining about the most recent years under British and Italian domination. And the influence is clear. Nobody is saying that Corfu isn't Greek. But look at those buildings, totally North-Eastern Italian look-alike copies. Should we discuss that Sevilla has been Spanish for centuries and there's no sign of Islamic colonial time? The famous British family the Durrells lived on Corfu -Lawrence Durrell a famous novelist and Gerard Durrell an environmentalist.There already have been 2 separate TV series about this family on Corfu -in the last 3 decades.
Wow!! This entire video was spectacular in every way!! The people of Corfu are wonderfully appreciative of their lives & customs! The attribute the brothers gave to the 1,000’s of olive trees’ for lasting & continually contributing to the islands’ inhabitants was amazing!! I’ve always wanted to go to Corfu, now even more so!! I love Greece and I was a frequent visitor who always stayed at hotels in Greece, at least 60 days each year. But I will not visit Greece until the documents about Covid, and all the questions about vaccines and also all restrictions will be removed. See you in 1 year! Or 10 years? This new innovative way of collecting olives from the tree is what the rest of the Greeks have been doing for centuries!!! I feel happy that corfiots stopped being lazy and stopped waiting for the olives to fall down half rotten, but don't brag about Innovation!!! As we say in Greece, come grandpa to show you your vineyard... Kalamata here, the true homeland of olives 🤣🤣😜🤗❤️🇬🇷

We live in Corfu, and we know Katerina with the spices, Mark and Vassilis, the beekeeper, whose mother-in-law lives in our village. Nonetheless the film was fascinating, you can enjoy the mud therapy all up and down the west coast of the island.

Corfu was amongst the only parts of Greece unconquerable by the Turks. Ruled by the Venetians, Napoleonic France and Britain, and finally Greece.

It's funny the Greeks ruled over the Venetians and then the Venetians ruled over the Greeks. Although Venetians treatment of Greeks was better than the Ottomans, they did try hard to assimilate the local Greek populous by making Latin the official language and also establishing multiple Catholic missions on the islands. They failed miserably.
Maybe they were smelly and that was why they built baths...

I was there in 1979 vacationing with my parents and staying in Hilton .I wonder if it still there ? I t was the best vacation in my life.
It wasn't just the silk road that brought the spices - many of the spices came from Southeast Asia and would have likely gone through the Indian Ocean, through Yemen and Oman, etc.
The Silk Road was also by sea too.
Maybe the title should be "Me, me, me in Greece". Seriously, why some presenters think the film should be more about their precious selves than the topic?!

That's the whole idea behind a presenter... Other documentaries are made without presenter at all. It's a different approach for different tastes.

If they gave me a small modest place to live in I would work at doing every thing to renovate that old village for just enugh to pay for my cost of living there ! Wow that would be a dream to live and work there tell my passing it would be paradise. I don't need much and I have all the skills to do what ever was needed and I have most of the tools to do it.
