- In this video we're looking at an Acer Swift with a busted cooling fan, but when dealing with a 'noisy fan' is very important to identify if the fan is busted, or just loud. I had another job after recording this video where the customer requested a replacement fan in their laptop, but when I inspected it, there was nothing wrong with the fan, the laptop was just running hot. Another simple one today folks, I've got bigger stuff in the works, it's just not quite ready! However, I'm also making time for these 'basics' videos because a lot of people ask me where to start with repairs - and this is it. This kind of work is what I call 'fundamentals', just simple parts replacement jobs. Identify damaged part, locate replacement, order, replace, done. Be it a fan, a hard drive, or an LCD panel, these kinds of jobs pay most of the bills.
That fan really is noisy
Why not replace the electrical tape? Seems like it could have a measurable effect on thermals (though probably not too high), especially when the heatsink inevitably gets full of dust again, as the air might prefer to escape through the slit and out the bottom vents.
Thinking about it, it could make for an interesting video to see how much of a difference forcing the air from a fan through the heatsink could make. It could potentially be useful for taming hot running laptops
Yea it won't make any significant difference. A little bit of air will go over the top f the heatpipe instead of under it - it's still hitting the heatpipe. Macbooks don't bother directing airflow at all, as long as it's all going past the heatpipe that's what matters. You'd probably see a bigger difference on a laptop with a bigger fin stack on it, mind you, but not this dinky thing.

remember to detach the battery's cable next time, even if the laptop is turned off, a small screw could cause a huge problem and can even break the whole motherboard if it falls somewhere there
I've always operated on my laptop with it turned on to trouble shoot and see live results

yes, but not everyone has the right knowledge to repair computer stuff by it self. Not every computer is the same, and you can destroy quite a lot when dissambling a laptop

@@FeelingShred This is the most common thing, they disassemble my laptop to clean my fans and upgrade my RAM. When I received my laptop back, it had overheating issues and I heard sounds in the laptop. I opened it and found they taped where it was supposed to have screws and my fans were not cleaned as they claimed. So yeah. This is one of the examples of a shit job that happened to me a lot actually.

It's fine. A little crease won't kill it, a proper bend and kink will. Wasn't ideal though I'll admit - the tape was a little stronger than expected.

I actually missed that... I always use a small pipette with alcohol or petrol to remove the tape (a q-tip would also do). Score the tape with a blade, a couple of drops of petrol, let it work, comes right off - no force no kinked pipe.
Also, briefly place piece of paper over the intake grill and see if it sticks 👍
My fan sounds completely fine, but every once in a while if I pick up my laptop, change position etc the fan can all of the sudden start to screech pretty loudly and it does so continuously for 10-15 seconds, then it goes back to normal. This can even happen if the laptop is stationary. I've noticed that giving the backside a "light" bang when it happens fixes it almost immediately. I don't know what the problem could be. I got an HP EliteBook 820.
I don't know much about all this stuff so here's my 2 cents. You might have a wobbly fan as described by the dude but it might not be dirty enough to be choked everytime. So it's better to take it for a quick check to an expert/professional.

I replace my broken fan on my dell inspiron and it works well
my older 2009 "gaming" laptop (that first generation of laptops with GPUs was so badass...) had a super convenient lid over the fan, you could access the entire thing from there and even disassemble it without having to take off the cover off the laptop... and another thing: I don't recall ever seeing any hint of "double sided tape" anywhere there... we reached new levels of low these days
@@FeelingShred my father's insprion 1545 also has the panels over the fan, HDD, the whole cooling system and ram and it's very convenient when he needs to clean it.
That noise was hilarious sounded like a whoopy cushion :)

The cheapest fan for my MSI GS65 was about 40 USD - and that was already from china. In the end the new fan broke after 1 week. This is a real pain!
this is a serious problem with these new crappy laptops that are being built out there... ALL the brands are basically using the same manufacturing process (did you notice all of them even use the same body shape and everything?? it's insane...) In these new laptops, a fan dying out can probably mean you're unable to keep using it. When I had an older laptop that worked just fine without fan for 4 entire years. I'm afraid that's not possible anymore with this new generation of CPUs

that's replacement not a fix.. I have old laptop with no spare parts available, this "fix" doesn't help.

Reminded me of the old MFM and RLL Hard drives when, they where on the last legs & the odd Quantum IDE would make a similar sound. 👍

my god... even that is a thing these days... we are fucked being forced to give money to these crappy things, it's not like I could wait, I needed to upgrade for work... well, "upgrade" in theory... it's not even that much better performance that I'm getting compared to a core2duo CPU... this is insane to me

the bent heatsink can cause a few temperature differences. wont kill it but thought id point that out. i personally did the same mistake on my lenovo ideapad z370 (rare laptop) while i was upgrading the processor. bought a new heatsink and fan from china and temps are better. no more throttling

that dust build up is what sent the poor fan into working "overtime", and this is how it ends, $15 isnt that bad though to get a laptop working.

Meanwhile I'm here like the chip is configured at 15w, maybe 25w and both of these things really wouldn't be an issue. Once the pipe isn't broken and the fan spins, I assume it'll be fine
Basically this. There's a time and a place when a bent heatpipe and some tape might matter. A typical internet-browser laptop isn't it. Gaming and workstation laptops that are gasping for air all the time, yes this would be far more relevant, but for most cheap laptops that the majority of people own - massively overthinking it.
@@Adamant_IT Not sure if I am also overthinking it, but seeing as this computer has an i5-8250U, the customer has minecraft installed, as well as other gaming applications and on top of that coretemp, I myself would at least have run a stress test to check temps after a fan change.
Well I have the exact laptop, this thing will run hot, even only with 15W. Replacing paste dropped temps ~20c.
@@Tsiikki that seems like a huge gap for just replacing thermal paste. Are you sure it was making proper contact with the copper pipe before?

It makes basically zero difference, the fin stacks on heatsinks like these are so small that having a little air hit the back of the heatpipe is probably going to be just as effective anyway. Certainly no harm in it though.
@@Adamant_IT I'm sure you're more than correct for this laptop specifically but my Asus laptop had quite the gap between the stock fan and heatsink. So much so that the recommended fix was aluminium tape to help the airflow go through and not disperse. Made a 2-3°C difference, very noticeable when you're barely under thermal throttle on some of these smaller form factor laptops.
So for anyone else reading this, it's not a 1 size fits all solution to skip the tape.

Yea, bigger laptops are a different case, I'll agree with you on that point. The vast majority of repair jobs I see are typically low-voltage CPUs where these kinds of optimisations make zero difference - so some discretion required then!
Good stuff tape not necessary but you should have changed the thermal paste and i tell you why thermal paste has a shelf life.The fact that the fan had issues most likely The CPU/GPU or APU would have kept the paste at an above rated temperature and you would most likely find the paste crumbly therefore not transfer heat efficiency as it should anyway great video mate from Perth WA

Bought my laptop January of 2020 I use it 24/7. I took it apart clean the dust out and the fans not wobbling. Although it doesn't spin as freely as that brand new one you got. I assume I just need to lubricate the fan. But man this laptop basically lasted a year before I saw any problems with it. I wish they made these fans last longer for the price you pay for the laptops. I would recommend anyone watching this to save up for a pc. Laptops cannot be run as long as desktop computers without constant maintenance.

my lenovo ideapad too, exactly after 1 year of usage the fan started making noise, right on time for the warranty to be expired... pieces of shit bastards, criminals... I fucking hate them
and just to put in perspective, my 2009 laptop that lasted until 2020 lasted 6 years until the fan started to have problems, eventually dying out... and it was another 4 years of use after that without any fan at all, temps never above 70 C for watching videos.... we are really in a bad position these days, it all went downhill

My 2 year old hp pavilion gaming laptop suddenly started making 'Brrrrrr' noises occasionally while playing games.

My fan was wobbling around. I took it apart, squeezed it together and gave it some hits. Put my laptop back together and it works again like a charm. Is this what’s called ‘hardware-repair’?

My advise for you would be, in future disassemble the whole cooling unit and not just remove the fan.(I did recheck and you have caused damage to a customers cooling assembly) Cleaning and applying fresh thermal paste would have been nice to see and also reapplying some tape (Alu' tape is max £5 a roll of 20m approx') between the fan and heat fin stack.
You mean the aluminium tape? Would it cause any problem with the motherboard because it transmitts the electricty?
Can you specify what damage he did? Because it seems I'm gonna have to do the same with my laptop and it's just replacing the fan and I don't want to damage anything in the process

@@nazibkhan775 Hi Nazib, at 4 minutes 35 seconds, he unscrews just the fan and this results in bending the heat pipe upwards when he removes the fan. You should remove the whole cooling assembly and then remove the tape from the fan/heatsink assembly. When every you do work to any area of cooling, you should always clean and place fresh thermal compound to CPU or GPU.

one of my old HP laptops had a noisy fan, but rather than anything serious, the fan grills were so large that debree got into it and paper got in and made an annoying racket.
computer was really slow because of the bad HDD so i replaced it.

The MacBook air when you have fault sensor or not connected it pumps the fan. Also could be the current sensor resistors that goes bad
Was going to comment something similar :) I suppose if they could get it to boot it would be worth checking if everything runs slow as hell, if it does it's almost certainly a sensor issue

If a fan is so dusty that it fails, there's no doubt that the machine has been running hot for an extended period of time and this often cooks the CPU thermal paste. I will thoroughly blow out the machine and will change the thermal paste EVERY TIME in this situation. No exceptions.

hi there I have brand new acer swift 3 2020 model ,with a similar issue but not caused by the fan .I hear static noise coming from the air vents even when the fan is turned off .like electric crackling noise ,can you pls explain why this is happening.
I opened the lid of the laptop and cleaned it of dust, but another minute and the sound of the mixer came back
you should have re-taped that fan... You fixed it, but reduced performance by not re-taping.

Hello, I would like your help. Where I could get Acer sf314-55 cooling fan? Because I have same issue.
First time I opened any laptop was my only laptop ever and it was for fan noise. I opened and put mineral oil in fan to stop the noise created by dying out of its own oil. Which also was causing overheating obviously. I used that Dell vostro 500 over 5 years and most of its life it was always on. And it is still can work but I dont use it anymore.
I have a Dell laptop and noticed every 15 minutes, the fan kicks in for about 4 to 5 seconds and everything freezes on my laptop of that same 4 to 5 seconds. Is it time time for a replacement? Thanks in advance for any input given.

I got a new laptop a month ago, and now when I start the laptop there's a buzzing noise for 2-3 sec from left side of speaker.

looks like very similar fan thats in my razer blade 15, ive had it for probably about 3 years now great laptop but charger wears out and they aint cheap and my fan did exactly what this one did it would start vibrating when fan speed would ramp up and would stop and re start several times and be fine, i replaced them already but still waiting on new battery to come because mine was super swollen cant believe it didnt burn my house down

MacBook system not saying there is a problem, it's saying that it's getting hot and cooling needs to run at full rpm.
For my old dell laptop I bought a new fan which sounds like a small chainsaw. It clearly has a lower quality than the original one. Do you have any tips if I could reduce that noise by e.g. adding a super small drop of oil or WD40?

I had a similar issue with the fan in my old thinkpad. I was about to purchase a new fan. However, a dip of hot glue holding the center of the fan in place did. the job. It actually looked like it was glued in in the factory as well. so far no more issues with it

I have the same laptop and I am planning to reapply thermal paste. That means I'll remove the heatsink, clean the old paste, IPA and apply new paste. Should be fine, just take care when lifting the cooler - I was a little rough on this one. Got away just fine (no problems afterwards) but it wasn't ideal.

100c is way too hot, send it back or get it repaired.
