Right on! Mistakes on every project, so don't thing it all goes off without a hitch like it may appear on camera. A mis-drilled hole, a wrong measurement, not setting the saw back to 0 before making a final cut and ruining an expensive piece of lumber...they are all there in some degree when building furniture. They are all gut punches. 😂

I know this video has been out for awhile, but I just wanted to thank you again for this, I was looking for a nice walnut stain and brass accents for my newly built walnut built in tv stand with pullout drawers, I honestly thought about doing pocket holes and plugging them with a solid brass rod, going over to the band saw and flushing them up before sanding them down.

Here in the UK stack dado blades are not technically illegal, but the regulations here in the EU state all table saw arbors must be short to enable one blade only. This stops a stack dado from being fitted. The reason being that to fit dado set up you must remove the rive knife and dust cover. And that according to the regs is dangerous and not permitted. So for us it’s single blade and repeat

Absolute quality builds mate, love how your cats gegg in on the action....!! Here in England we use mostly millimeters and for good reason, its wayyy easier than imperial and i can use both...! :)

Great video!!! Again and Again appreciate all the details. I like all drawer jointing styles. Also suggest using a lite color wood with the dominos for the contrast against the walnut. The brass in lay was definitely top self / drawer.

Wonderful ideas! The Domino ones would be even easier to make considering that fact that you can actually use 3 screws for the glue-up and then remove and mortise over them with the Domino. Thank you for sharing!

Great video, thanks for sharing. I have done the Domino drawers also. What worked for me was to set the depth to 20 or even 25 or use a shim to get the domino further from the edge, but not out the back of the front. That makes the little cross piece stronger. And make the dominoes very slightly thinner as you did. Apparently I did not really like them because I have never done them again.
😂 Well, you can chalk that up as R & D. I haven't made another Domino drawer either. 😂

I just use two bits of wood screwed to the bench in a square to align pocket hole joints and clamp the wood to them. Or you could use tall bench dogs. Good video, metric ftw though.

New to the channel-- I am enjoying your content! Thanks for taking the time to create and share your videos.
I know it's common to cut the dado off of the back to allow the draw bottom to slide in after assembly and I know that makes things easier. However, I just don't think that the drawer is as strong without something supporting tieback edge of the bottom. if that drawer gets filled with random heavy junk, a couple of finish nails aren't going to cut it.
Thanks and welcome! Your point is well taken. I actually use screws to hold the back of the bottom in place and with everything glued and supported on 3 sides, unless you are storing books in there, I'm not worried about it coming apart. Never had one fail yet. 👍
What kind of adhesive are you using on the Locking Rabbit? I only recently go into woodworking. Retired from the Army after twenty-one years and rode the mid-life crisis struggle-bus, so I figured why not spend thousands of dollars on tools!?! Then turn to UA-cam and figure out what said tools are used for. I only recently found your channel and I sincerely appreciate the information/instruction. Lastly, I am totally not a cat person, but I oddly enjoy watching your cats do cat things in your shop.

Cheers Krap! Thanks for your service 🙏🏻. I generally use Titebond PVA glue for most joints, but I will use epoxy sometimes when I need more open time for complex and lengthy glue-ups.

A question, if I may. When sanding down the parts and components for the boxes for a customer (or even for yourself), to make sure the joinery doesn’t change, would you sand to a finished grit on the inside before doing the joinery, just in case it affects the fit during assembly by possibly creating gaps? Thanks as always 🙏
That is a great question! And I actually had a long explanation about this in the video, but took it out because it was too long. Since the finish coming off of my helical planer is pretty smooth, I lightly sand with 150 and I'm done before applying Rubio. However, if you have to go through multiple grits before achieving the surface needed for your finished, then I do suggest some sanding before any joinery because it can affect the fit of some joints if you go crazy with the sander.

So were the brass pins as fussy to sand and finish as the brass bars were? Or were you able to get by with less sanding since it's such a small surface area?
Yeah, it's all a bit fussy since the brass is softer than the wood around it. Almost best to leave the pins a little proud so you tape around them and give them a nice polishing and not affect the wood around them. It also give them a tactile feel.
I'm new to your channel and am liking your way of explaining. I'm new to all of this and I'm still buying some of the basic necessities. I noticed on your table saw that your dado adapter plate is wood. Did you make that? The table saw I'm planning on buying doesn't have one available and I know I will need it.

I think those dominos are also overconstrained; Ideally, you would only have one tight fitting domino, and then would cut the other two using a wider setting, so they are only constraining one rotational axis and one linear axis.
Then you would see gaps on the other 2?

@@rlockwood2 I think if you mortise everything after it’s glued up, it’s the best way and you don’t have to worry about changing any settings.
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking ya, doing them after avoids the issue as well, but loses the ability to use it for position/alignment. Adjusting while doing a bunch of drawers sucks, easy spot to make a mistake that's difficult to recover from..

Super cool stuff! The accents are all great (referring to the cats, but the drawer stuff was cool, too. Ha!). I cried a little when the board split on the dominos.
When you did your pre-assembly sanding, did you avoid sanding the edges of the boards where the joinery was cut, so as to avoid changing all the tolerances? I recently made that mistake (different joinery than drawers, but joinery nonetheless) and was wondering how you cope with it. :-)
I only need to sand up to 150 with Rubio and the finish I get off my jointer and planer only requires a light sanding and I'm done. If you need to stomp through a bunch of grits to get to your finished surface, then the sanding process will definitely have an effect on certain types of joinery.
@Keith, did you just sand away that 1/8" of brass sticking up on the locking rabbet drawer side?
I used a file to take off as much as possible and then hit it with the sander

Fantastic video! Is there an less expensive option to Blum slides the 18” which are now $39.99 a pair or an increase of $3.59 or about 10%. In addition, you can’t get them.
I’m sure there are less expensive undermounts (like the garbage ones they put in my kitchen cabinets 😂), but I’ve never actually looked around. Some shops they strictly make custom drawers generally have less expensive options.
What pin are you using? I haven’t found one I can see well on Maple.
Pin? You mean the brass round stock? Copper may show up better on maple.
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking You have marked on the Walnut what what you were cutting, it looked white, then you wrote on the side and front pieces, and could see it. I have yet to find a good making pen….. what do you use for marking the darker woods….

Keith-great content, as always. Quick question…what is the blue plate you have on your domino and what is its purpose? Is it similar to the Seneca domiplate?
Thanks! That is a TSO Bigfoot. It gives a much bigger reference surface when cutting dominos on the flat and on narrow surfaces. It’s a much better fence option than the plastic one that comes with the Domino. Its different than the Domiplate
