I just had a similar problem trying to figure out how to make a floating shelf that I could hang my ~35lb e-bike about 14 inches away from the wall. It just felt like the pressure treated wood I used was not handling things and trying to cantilever itself off. So I wound up just driving a big lag screw through the top cleat from the inside into the stud behind, anchoring it hard in place. since it's not going to be a movable piece of furniture, it really wound up making sense to hard mount it to the wall, and the cleat was just a super simple way of getting it nice and square in the right spot. After a single 3 inch lag bolt and washer went into the back cleat it locked down hard to the wall. Nice and sturdy.
Oh nice! Yeah, the problem here was the distance from the wall when the door was full opened far exceeded the height, so like you said it was cantilever central. Just needed to screw the cleat of the nightstand into the wall as well once installed.
Saw a short on Facebook and had to look you up on youtube. Big fan! Love your work and your videos. Lots of food for thought for this aspiring woodworker.
Sweet build Keith!! The Lamello is interesting in how it pulls the joint tightly together. I feel like its one and only issue (besides the price tag) is that it leaves a visible hole. It's certainly nice to not need clamps though. Also, that intro is solid gold
As long as you plan ahead so the access hole will never be visible, then it's not a problem. Just like any other hidden fastener. And yes, it really pulls that miter together nice and tight. 💪
Add a nice threaded insert and bolt underneath the nightstand that bumps into the french cleat on the wall. This keeps it from accidently falling off by getting bumped. That said, beautiful build! I love the brass powder inlay design!!

Yeah, I'm just glad I figured out the issue before the client. 😂 French cleats are amazing in so many situation, but not where there is so little height in the piece and so much extension horizontally.

You do amazing work man! This is the exact style nightstands I'm planning to build. Did you ever get around to building the bed you mentioned at the end of the video?? Would love to see it!
Nice project and video. Not sure I'm quite ready to break out the Clamex for drawer box construction but... on second thought.... Also, you can have as much CNC time as you want for free down here but you do have to come to Texas...
The Clamex are just internal clamps until the glue dries! And with the Shaper Origin, I have a personal CNC at my fingertips 😜, but thanks for the offer to come alllllll the way to Texas! 😜😂
seems like lamello would be great for builds which might be assembled/disassembled. I don’t see the point if it’s all going to get glued anyway. Why incur the fastener cost?
Really nice work, Keith. I must admit, I was surprised to see that you decided to attach the pocket holes from the inside. I know they are not visible unless the drawer is removed but since they are going to be hanging from a cleat, why not have them facing the cleat? Also would have been easier to fasten them from the outside, no need for the right angle drill attachment. Anyway, they look great! 👍
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking I agree with you, pocket holes are not meant to be "celebrated", (hence my initial comment lol) they are ugly AF, but also practical (at times). What I'm saying is, the pocket holes are less likely to be seen if they were to face the mating wall cleat. I might even take it a step further and attach a back to the "box" and hide the cleat all together.
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking That's probably what you should have said in the first place. You not wanting to do it that way makes more sense than your first reply 🤣😂

@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking Really? I always thought Chartreux cats had those like amber colored eyes. Well that's even more strange that they look so similar. Thanks for the reply!
Hey there Keith, I have not been able to stop thinking of this video and the drawer falling off. It may be obvious to everyone but I can’t seem to figure out why it came off the cleat and how that can be avoided or reinforced to prevent. I trying to do a similar project with the same installation using French cleat, but I’m afraid to now until I understand how to avoid the issue. Are you (or anyone) able to share more on how to resolve this please? Thanks!
The piece is only 7 inches tall, but is 27 inches long when extended, so it throws it way off balance and it creates an easy tipping point and it slides up and right off the cleat. Best fix is just screw the mating cleat that is attached to the nightstand directly to the wall once it is hung.
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking Thanks, Keith. That all makes sense to me now. I appreciate you taking the time. Thanks for all your amazing content, humor, projects, attention to detail, and over-the-top craftsmanship.
I linving in México, i descovered your channel, i love it, you’re an artist, your talent is fantastic.. i dont understand evething that you say, but your job speaks by itself..
Great video and production quality! How did you correct the issue with the cleats? For a future project I am considering adding a back panel to the cabinet inside of the cleat so it could be fastened to the wall cleat
I always like having the French clear there to make it level and temporarily hold it in place, but then still drive home a screw in a stud to prevent it coming off the cleat while using or accidentally bumping it.
Hey Glen! I actually had that 3D printed as a prototype, but it took forever to print and took a bunch of filament, so it's not economically feasible. And it's actually 2 pieces that need to be put together. We are working on a re-design to bring to market in 2022.
That is beautiful and way over the top for nightstands 🙂. I think for such a long but shallow box you have to screw the French cleat to the wall or each other.
So for your 1/4in “plywood”, you glued the 2 panels together with the grain running in the same direction and just offset the seams? No worries about strength or warping? Will that work with softwoods too? And those are beautiful. I really like the chamfer detail that insets the drawers.
With thin plywood and quartersawn thin hardwood that is a floating panel in a groove, I don't really worry about warping and it's strong like bull once glued. If you are trying to make a custom piece of "plywood" with just thin layers of wood, then grain should be alternated to keep panel flat.
They're gorgeous. All things considered, I think I'll stick with bedside tables actually sitting on the floor. Maybe not as glamorous, but they do have more storage space.
As always, nice build! Sucks it got messed up, but now you have a topic for your next video, "How to repair a damaged floating nightstand with epoxy inlay" 😃
I think we’ve all experienced dropping something we’ve worked on. Fittingly he doesn’t even try to pick it up, just “the hell with it”. Damage done. My dad used to say “unfortunately you’ll always stick the landing, no matter how you got there”.
Yes, but you need to purchase an additional 4mm cutter separately for standard biscuits. The blade the comes with the Zeta is specifically for the P-connectors.
Oh cool! For hardwoods, check out Middle Valley Lumber in Hampton, NJ. You will have to contact him (Travis) through his Facebook page as he is by appointment only. He is a sole proprietor and mills and dries all his lumber. Super high quality material.
Only issue was the color on the drawer front didn't match exactly to the rest of the case. Sanding that high closes the pores and doesn't let the oil penetrate. I will adjust the sanding routine if I do any more of these.
Like someone mentioned...the french cleat installed on the actual nightstand will have to be screwed into the wall as well. I will re-design for future, though.
what are you selling lamello wise? biscuits? dosicol? minicol? also what am I missing I keep seeing people using blum glides in videos, my wholesalers are looking at June for any blum hinges or slides. Where are they coming from there is a shortage
Lamello zeta and biscuit jointer and all connectors, but not glue systems. For the slides, i have some in inventory and not all sizes are out of stock.
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking I have a classic jointer, I love it, looked into the zeta didn't really see a need for it in my work, I don't use Blum undermounts, but I use their hinges they've been almost impossible to get, I was able to get ahold of 500 hinges and plates, back in June and I am almost out with jobs coming up, there is another company that I am able to get, they work as well and thankfully they will work with my minipress. This whole shortage has been a huge pain, I never keep inventory and I have been bogged down with materials because you have to buy it when you can get it, Hopefully it ends soon but all indicators is that its going to be a few more years of this insanity.
Hey KJ! Could you use your Lamello connectors to join the cleat to each other? Not necessarily using the 45 degree cleat but just two boards butted together? Can they handle the shear force?
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking all you would need is a secondary cleat that wasn’t a french cleat (just a small rectangular board) underneath the first so once it sat down on the top it basically hinges down on the lower and can’t cantilever up anymore, except for if you want to remove it the way you installed it, if that makes sense. No hardware necessary, just physics like the french cleat
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking Great thanks. They don't really sell epoxy in a tube like that in the UK. tends to be half tubes for securing concrete anchors. Don't like PU much unless you can clamp the hell out of it. Sorry that it got damaged. Must have been a bit galling

@@Mr.GucciClass1A You're very welcome! And thank you for the kind words and for watching!
I linving in México, i descovered your channel, i love it, you’re an artist, your talent is fantastic.. i dont understand evething that you say, but your job speaks by itself..
Gracias!!! 🙏🏻👍🏻
Great video and production quality!
How did you correct the issue with the cleats?
For a future project I am considering adding a back panel to the cabinet inside of the cleat so it could be fastened to the wall cleat
Thanks! I screwed it to the wall once hung on the cleat.
I always like having the French clear there to make it level and temporarily hold it in place, but then still drive home a screw in a stud to prevent it coming off the cleat while using or accidentally bumping it.
Yep! Smart move!
Looks nice keith. Whens the next one coming out?
Thanks! Not sure…
Fantastic build
Of course it's all because of shop cat Jerry!
Of course! 😹
KJ what is the set up you have on the edge of your table that holds the festool track? I want to add that flip track saw set up to my table.

Hey Keith I have a lammello but I've never seen the 45⁰ piece you have on the front (at 2:45) in Australia do you know where I can get one?
Hey Glen! I actually had that 3D printed as a prototype, but it took forever to print and took a bunch of filament, so it's not economically feasible. And it's actually 2 pieces that need to be put together. We are working on a re-design to bring to market in 2022.
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking cheers mate, looks like a great addition
@@glen7380 Thanks Glen. Definitely gives a more stable base for those 45’s.
That intro! 😆
😜😂👍🏻
That is beautiful and way over the top for nightstands 🙂. I think for such a long but shallow box you have to screw the French cleat to the wall or each other.
It would appear so! 👍
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking Thanks for replying. 👍🤗
@@karenmitchell6814 Thanks for watching!
quick recovery to everyone!
👍🙌
love the intro hahah
Thanks Dave!! 😜😂
Hi Keith, where do you get the combo core / multi core? I often see you using?
Atlantic Plywood or Roberts Plywood
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking thank you!
They're gorgeous.
All things considered, I think I'll stick with bedside tables actually sitting on the floor. Maybe not as glamorous, but they do have more storage space.
hey, great work. How do you work with cat. do you get him out of shop before turning table saw?
Cats come and go as they please. They are trained to stay away from running power tools.
Looks awesome! Did you do anything to ‘fix’ them in place on the cleats after the wee oopsy?
It literally happened hours before video release, so I haven’t fully come to grips with the damage yet 😂
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking well if it’s any consolation it made the video pretty funny 😂
@@jmwoodcraft7842 Works for me!
Love it
Thanks so much!!
As always, nice build! Sucks it got messed up, but now you have a topic for your next video, "How to repair a damaged floating nightstand with epoxy inlay" 😃
😂🤣 that’s a pretty niche video!
I think we’ve all experienced dropping something we’ve worked on. Fittingly he doesn’t even try to pick it up, just “the hell with it”. Damage done. My dad used to say “unfortunately you’ll always stick the landing, no matter how you got there”.
😂 I was afraid to look...I knew it had to be bad...
Can a person use the zeta as a normal biscuit joiner as well?
Yes, but you need to purchase an additional 4mm cutter separately for standard biscuits. The blade the comes with the Zeta is specifically for the P-connectors.
Beautiful work. What type is this wood?
Thank you! It's walnut. My favorite!
Hey Keith, I live in Jersey where do you buy your wood.
Oh cool! For hardwoods, check out Middle Valley Lumber in Hampton, NJ. You will have to contact him (Travis) through his Facebook page as he is by appointment only. He is a sole proprietor and mills and dries all his lumber. Super high quality material.
You didn't run into any issues with the Rubio after sanding that finely?
Only issue was the color on the drawer front didn't match exactly to the rest of the case. Sanding that high closes the pores and doesn't let the oil penetrate. I will adjust the sanding routine if I do any more of these.
How are you going to anchor it to the wall so it doesn't flip off the French cleat in the final install? Cheers
Oh man. Sorry about the "non" floater. I have to admit that it hurt me to watch. Thanks, as always, for taking the time to show us your craftsmanship.
Thanks David! Laughter is my only therapy right now...😂
Where did you get the wood from? Is it 4x4x20 for $200? Thanks.
Middle Valley Lumber, NJ. I'm not sure what you mean by 4x4x20
Hey KJ! Could you use your Lamello connectors to join the cleat to each other? Not necessarily using the 45 degree cleat but just two boards butted together? Can they handle the shear force?
Hmmmm…interesting idea!! Would definitely be worth some experimenting 👍🏻
My heart broke when the drawer fell! They are still beautiful. Hopefully you found a way to fix it. It didn’t look too bad, but what do I know?
Thanks! It’s pretty bad and remains unfixed at the moment…🤦♂️🤣
Why epoxy to glue the cabinets, and wood glue to do the draws. Any particular reason?
Needed more open time on the cabinet
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking Great thanks. They don't really sell epoxy in a tube like that in the UK. tends to be half tubes for securing concrete anchors. Don't like PU much unless you can clamp the hell out of it. Sorry that it got damaged. Must have been a bit galling
@@planespeaking Yeah, I haven't fully recovered mentally just yet 😂
One more thing… my heart broke for you when that shelf fell. I have a piece fall off my paint table literally hours bf I had to deliver so I feel your pain
Thanks man! I appreciate the condolences 😜. It’s a horrible feeling.
Keith, any chance of sharing the inlay design file? Struggling to find something quite like it online
Sorry Andy, I spent hours upon hours creating that file. Just find a vector file of the Asanoha pattern and edit it to your liking.
Sorry Keith, just to be clear are you saying you’re not prepared to? I’d be willing to buy the file from you at a reasonable price. I’m over in the UK and not a UA-camr so it’s not as though I’m in any way “competition “!
@@andybrook-dobson726 Sorry, the files are not available for sale.
