KJ delivers again!! Love seeing you have found love for posting here again :). By the way, for those who might be considering, the modern woodwork course is absolutely fantastic. So many tricks and tips! And a fantastic product at the end! Well done again KJ!!
Just found this video as I'm finishing up a very similar build for a customer! It's quite massive, too, with a 5" square column, but my braces aren't quite as thick. I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one building thick furniture.
Aged like a good wine :) Love it when beautiful wood, quality woodworking and great videography come together. Your commenting style is a joy. Truly a labor of love if I may say so!
Johnson does it again. Well done. Classic KJ production. Loved it. I have a stash of 8/4 walnut I bought green and I’m ITCHING to build a table, in two years :(
Very nice. Even though it was years ago, cannot say that I’m not envious of you getting that walnut for that price. I think I’m at 16+ a bf for walnut.
Ok Keith, I Do Not Have Man Crush, but you’re a pretty BADASS woodworker! I’ve been a subscriber for quite a while now and just want to learn more and more from you. Thank you Keith. I think I can become good at woodworking too, if I keep learning…
Right before getting in bed and watching this video, I did a glue up. At 4:00, you reminded me I didn't check for square. I went and checked wearing nothing but my underwear.
Great work! Off the wall question maybe, do you have a vid or links on how to set up the measurements for the domino with the X leg pieces? Small detail yes but confusing if you’re just learning the domino.
I always love how we always say "don't forget to check for square" haha. As a newer woodworker if it wasn't square at that point all I would know to do is curse haha. What are some mediation tricks if you come to that point and you're not square or are you just screwed?
In this case, I could cut a slightly larger groove and put in an angled wedge to get it back to square when I did the dry fit. However, I would have checked that my miter gauge was square to my blade after I made my first test cut before I cut all the joinery.
Ok KJ, awesome work but you’ve heard that enough, right? So, for us beginners who dream of some day doing this ourselves, how about a heads up or guesstimate what it takes (time & materials) and what you’d sell it for on the retail end? I’d love nothing more than to build one for the wife (my test piece) while building one for a paying (& excited) client. Any help? Thanks in advance. Kind Regards, John
Awesome table Keith. I have a bunch of 8/4 walnut acclimating for a round pub table. I love the look of this table. Do you have plans available? If not, I guess you'll get a few more views from me.
It varies. Sometimes it’s best to ask the client their budget and work backwards from there, so you don’t waste your time pricing something they can’t afford.
Did you do anything to make sure there weren’t any bugs and if so what did you do just curious cause I like to buy green sometimes and I got to some pretty crazy measure to heat it up seeing other options
I monitored it closely for two years in my basement and there were no sawdust piles or any signs of bugs. It should be pretty evident once a tree is milled up, if there’s a bug problem.
Love the (classic) video! How do you deal with squeeze out when using epoxy? I'm always nervous to use it for glue ups because it's so messy, even with the benefit of more open time
For epoxy squeeze out, I wipe the excess with acetone. Nowadays, I use TotalBoat THIXO which is a 2-part thickened epoxy which is much easier to control how much of a mess you make because it doesn't run all over the place. It comes in a tube, like caulk, and uses a mixing tip to combine the 2 parts as it comes out of the tube. I swear by that stuff. Gives you about 30-35 minutes of open time.
Nice build, sir! My wife loves round tables and wants one for our new home next year (construction delayed due to high current materials costs!), and I’ve been studying designs. The biggest problem I have seen with center-post designs is that they wobble. Your design seems robust enough that it might not wobble as much as most, or maybe even not at all. Can you comment on that?
Question: you out put in those C channels and I see other table builder do this also. But I have always wondered if the C channel is superior to putting in a sliding dovetail board. I get the C channel is easier but I don't think that easier is your style. Thanks in advance! It is a great looking table

Very cool! For tables like that, I definitely like 'em beefy! 💪
Beautiful table. Love that you pulled out some old footage.

I love the color of walnut. The table is amazing! No wonder it’s your favorite.
Thanks Patty! I would use walnut on every project if I could 😉
This table is gorgeous….WOW😮
Thanks man!
This table is absolutely gorgeous!! Incredible work and detailing!
Thanks y’all!! 🙏🏻🙌🏻
I would love to take the full course on that console table. Still watching the video. But that looks awesome.

Killer project, Morsels!
😜 Thanks bro! 👊🏻

Go for it! Thanks Mark! 👍
Wow so much walnut.
Walnuttiness!! 😁
Beautiful table! I'd definitely pay $4 BF even if I have to wait a couple of years.
Thanks for sharing your talents!
Thanks Carl! Yeah, you gotta have a lot of patience at that price 😂
Lots of great tips in this video/build. Nice
Thanks! Glad it was useful 👍🏻
Great handle on the order of operations!
Thanks Thom!
2018. No wonder how you got walnut that cheap. Even wet wood. Lol. Love the build and the table. Always a pleasure to see your videos
😂 well, 2018 is when I built it. I bought the lumber in 2016! The good old days…you know, back when gas was like $2/gallon. 😂
Ya really. Hilarious. I actually prefer to dry my own lumber to save on cost. It takes a while but I enjoy it
@@scottsevigny697 If you have the room, it's definitely a money saver!
Beautiful table
Thanks a lot! 👍🏻
Spectacular as always!! Even if it's a throw back!
Thanks Ted! Retro can be cool! 😂😎
I enjoy building this style table myself it keeps your room for error to a minimum
Thanks a lot! Very true!
Fantastic video, amazing table. Thanks for sharing!

Love the wires coming out from behind the dash trim! Lol. Seriously though, great vid, as always.

😂 Those were from my satellite radio, until the antenna got ripped off and it was useless after that. Ahhhh, the good old days. Thanks Joseph!!
I love your table! Great craftsmanship!
Thanks man! I greatly appreciate it! 👍🏻
Beautiful Table
Thanks a lot, Jim! 👍🏻
Got a great tip from Drew At Fischer woodworks. Put I little salt on the glue between the boards, it stops the sliding around.
Nah. Doesn't work.
That is gorgeous!
Thanks Josh! 👍🏻🙌🏻
Looks great Keith
Thanks Kaleb! Much appreciated bud. 👍
Gorgeous.
Thanks very much!
Thanks for the video
I'm on vacation in Maui, and combined with a few Starbucks K cups it almost made me feel normal....
😂 Glad I could help soften the misery of a vacation in Maui.
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking ha ha 😂 poor me I know.. I'm not good with with change or transition

Thanks very much! 🙏
Very nice. Even though it was years ago, cannot say that I’m not envious of you getting that walnut for that price. I think I’m at 16+ a bf for walnut.
Yeah, I definitely got a great deal and luckily had the space and the time to store it and let it dry. It was a long time to wait! 😂

But that mirror shine on the dado stack, though....oooooh weee

Yep, those suck 😂

😂😆 Hopefully it wasn't too late to make any adjustments, if necessary 😬
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking It was what I consider ''square enough''
I love your videos
Thanks very much!!
Excelente! 🇧🇷
Thank you!! 🙏😃
Thanks for sharing the build with us. Perhaps you'll consider chamfering the edges of the tabletop and framing, as they tend to need it.
Thanks for watching! Unfortunately, I’m not much of a chamfer guy in that situation.
if you sprinkle salt in the glue, it will keep it from sliding around during glue up, the salt wont make any gaps, it melts and crushes
No, that doesn’t work. It also gels up the glue.
Thank you. I am inspired. God bless from the Netherlands.
Ps; your hammerfist is a palmstrike ;-)
🙏🏻✊🏻
To stop boards from sliding when glued, sprinkle some sand. Pins provide better alignment however
Never had any luck with sand or salt.
nice!
Thank you! Cheers!
Bravo 👍👍!
Thank you, Tony!
This guy is hilarious.
Thank you!! 😃
Nice video as always.
Does not salt work to stop sliding? I saw this tip and it seams easy and does not leave any dowels to keep track of.
Thanks! Salt has never worked for me. And it can inhibit glue from drying if too much is used.
Amazing i admire the craftsmanship. To my taste it's a bit blocky but beautiful nonetheless.
Thanks!
If it didn't take 2 years, it's not a Keith Johnson piece.
There's 103% truth to that statement. 😂
First question that came to my mind was 'does Keith own any other clothes?' :P
😂 Valid question, but no. 😜
WOW!!!
Thanks so much!
Great work! Off the wall question maybe, do you have a vid or links on how to set up the measurements for the domino with the X leg pieces? Small detail yes but confusing if you’re just learning the domino.
Thanks man! Unfortunately, I don’t have anything more detailed than what’s in this video
Try the salt trick instead of the dowel trick for clamping work piece’s
Never had luck with that method, unfortunately.
I always love how we always say "don't forget to check for square" haha. As a newer woodworker if it wasn't square at that point all I would know to do is curse haha. What are some mediation tricks if you come to that point and you're not square or are you just screwed?

Love the dowel trick! Where did you get that diesel 4Runner😂
Haha. Thanks! #dieselpower
Great work, Keith! What kind of angle plate and setup blocks do you use / recommend?
Thanks man! Those are Woodpeckers Tools. I use the setup blocks every day - probably my most used layout tools.

How do you price your work?
It varies. Sometimes it’s best to ask the client their budget and work backwards from there, so you don’t waste your time pricing something they can’t afford.
Wow that's the first 4 runner I've seen that sounded just like a diesel. U should do a video on that motor swap!! Jk

@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking that was my guess, but thanks for confirming! 👍

It's weird seeing the same space look so different as time goes by. Any future shop plans? I've got a garage shop that I constantly rearrange.
That was my old shop when I lived in CT. But my current shop is in need of some reorganization as well 😂

The C-Channel is actually more work and more money to do, but also less noticeable than multiple sliding dovetail boards would be.
