You’re a really insightful and intelligent guy. By far one of if not the best reactors ever. You really provide your personal experience listening to each song. I appreciate.
Every single person who grew up in the 80s, they hear this song and automatically they are doing the “sushi chop on the forearm”. It’s ingrained instinct for us.
"Burning Down The House", "Road to Nowhere", and "Psycho Killer" are all songs from them you have to check out. You don't really listen to The Talking Heads, you experience them.
I love what you took from this song. I think we're all guilty of just going with the flow and allowing things to happen to us rather than making conscious choices of what we want. I have a friend who has a shared love of this song and whenever I see her and ask how she is doing, she does that little karate chop motion down her arm from this video to indicate "same as it ever was". Lol
The moment I first heard this song/saw the video was around 1983, I must have been 14. It changed my WHOLE head around. Also this video was directed and choreographed by the great Toni Basil, who just turned 80 today!
Great take!! I've always thought about it the same way. Life goes by so fast, and sometimes people just do what's expected of them. All of a sudden it's like 'Who am I? I lived my life like a robot, just letting everyday pass me by. What have I done???' Could explain his robotic moves. I've actually met him a few times. He'd ride his bike to where I worked in NYC. He was always very sweet and polite and a little shy. Such a cool dude!!
Talking Heads was such a unique band and one of my all time favorites. David Byrne has a crazy energy all his own. Next I would try "Crosseyed and Painless".
I would highly recommend “Life during wartime” or “Slippery People” from the concert/movie called Stop Making Sense. It’s an amazing movie and features the full band. They are amazing live.
Good and sincere reaction Shon. If yo do new reactions to Talking Heads try with the ones in "Stop Making Sense". Do you remember your reaction when David Byrne was running all around the stage? That is one 😉 And if you do more reaction to Prince, try Play That Funky Music at Los Angeles Forum 2011. You won't regret it!
Welcome to the Talking Heads. I've seen a lot of Heads reactions and I think you're the first who got the message right away. Don't stop, there's plenty more to hear. A unique band.
I take this song to be partially about the Heideggerian concept of "thrownness" (geworfenheit); the feeling that you've been thrown into a world which you don't and cant understand, from which you feel somehow alienated or as the song asks "well; how did I get here?" and in the meantime your life is flowing by, whether or not your find out where that highway goes to.
I was 10 when this song came out and I remember loving it so much and as I grab, and the Talking Heads became more prominent, I was crazy about them! Such a freaking great band
You’re young, but I predict at some point you’re going to ask yourself “My god, how did I get here?” My friends & I always used to say “this is not my beautiful house!” and crack up laughing. Life, like the song, is absurd. Roll with it!!!
The lyrics and delivery of the verses are deliberately evocative of Southern Baptist preachers, who were huge on AM radio in the late 70s. So you called that correctly. it's catchier than you might thik, though. You say you won't listen to this song again, but it's not only an earworm - it's a damn banger. I DJ'd for years and it was a floor-filler in any context. And at the time of its release, it was played on R&B radio and spun by Hip-Hop DJ's. It was also sampled by a few Hip-Hop acts in the 80s and early 90s. I mean, think about it... That bassline and beat are totally inspired by the AfroPop of legends like Fela Kuti and Fema Kuti, and his rhythmic speech was lumped in with early Rap for many, because of its context, which was a polyglot brand of Art Rock that married the social commentary of Punk with the ass-shaking qualities of Funk. And speaking of Funk, Talking Heads would go on to collaboirate with Nona Hendryx and members of Parliament Funkadelic.
They are an interesting band. For a "continuation," listen to Tom Tom Club's "Genius of Love." That band was a split off from Talking Heads. "You may ask yourself, How did I get here?"
I was in the inaugural honors english 4 class in my high school. my favorite teacher worked with an up and coming teacher in the school to design a curriculum for the class. the big focus was on existentialism. I actually did my thesis project on this song. this is the quintessential existentialism song.
Hi Shon. I really like your reaction videos. You're like the friend everyone loves to show cool stuff to just to get that amazed reaction. I love all of the Talking Heads hits including 'BURNING DOWN THE HOUSE', 'AND SHE WAS', 'CROSS-EYED AND PAINLESS' and 'LIFE DURING WARTIME'. I put the Talking Heads in the same 'new wave' category with DEVO and The B-52s'. You should react to their big hits along with the CURE (Grinding Halt), Adam Ant (Stand & Deliver) and Blondie (Heart of Glass). I also suggest trying some offbeat 60s & 70s songs like FLASHLIGHT, DISCO DUCK, DOUBLE DUTCH BUS, AMOS MOSES, DOUBLE BARREL by Dave and Ansel Collins, Monkberry Moon Delight by Wings, OUTA SPACE by Billy Preston...and JUNK FOOD JUNKIE. Just a thought... All of the reaction videos I've seen sample a lot of the same novelty and big hit songs but no one has thought to try reacting to obscure song videos with views under 100. I've found some obscure stuff that virtually no one has seen plus really weird music videos from the strange side of UA-cam. Ask your viewers to send you some odd ducks and you'll find a wealth of crazy stuff to react to. There's some weirdies out there that honestly are fascinating but most people, ten seconds in, will go "OH HELL NAW!". 1. QUENTIN AND HIS BIRDBOX ORCHESTRA FEATURING HIS 18TH CENTURY HAND TEACHER. 2. ADAVI DONGA SONGS; Idhi Oda Nandanavandan 3. JUNGLE FEVER by the Chakachas. More later... Thanks for being there Shon.
I know I'm late to this party - you're one of the few to look past the visual dance aspect of David Byrne being a weird artist dude to actually listen to the message and 'get it'. Eff it, have a sub - you've earned it!
What is funny is that you will probably not listen to this for a long time and then one day you'll find yourself listening to it again out of the blue! Lol
Would love to hear a reaction to Erasure. Chains of love and A little respect are the most well known, but from a lyrics standpoint, Piano Song would be a good choice.
Also, u came at this band in a weird order - not that it matters, there's only one Dave Byrne. Burning down the house is requisite, obviously, that's where I'd have started u probably. Unless you're an al green fan - cause there River cover is nearly unparalleled...and quirky af ✌️
He specifically was influenced by old school preachers for this song, so you're on track. Generally, Talking Heads lyrics don't make much sense. It's more about the general sounds and the beat. David Byrne is very unusual. I think it's fairly safe to say he's not neurotypical. I say that with a lot of admiration.
I have seen so many reactors and people in general who just dont get this song. Bravo mate. You nailed it!!! But as to you not liking this song etc, i have to say, F^^k you 😊😊
When you watch the movie down and out in Beverly Hills the song will make dance sometimes things stop making since like the movie breakfast club the song at the end makes all eyes open think don’t reacted with out thinking
Cool you're being straight about not ever hearing this track again, but if you do hear it... you might just turn it up a bit saying, yep, ain't that the Truth
You’re a really insightful and intelligent guy. By far one of if not the best reactors ever. You really provide your personal experience listening to each song. I appreciate.

Take Me To the River. And She Was
Talking Heads are the quirkiest band ever! I love 'em. Thanks for the reaction.
I would say Thomas Dolby.
Throw The B-52’s into that conversation too.
I was gonna say, B-52s are the quirky goats.
Thank You Hilly Kristal and CBGB's to giving the Talking Heads a stage to perform on when no one else would
Devo pretty quirky too. 😅
"There is water at the bottom of the ocean! " Hilarious. Love that line.
David Byrne and the Talking Heads were certainly one of a kind band. Absolute geniuses
I love what you took from this song. I think we're all guilty of just going with the flow and allowing things to happen to us rather than making conscious choices of what we want. Yes!! ❤
@@lem01ne Amazing shyit...

And She Was is another good one of theirs
Talking Heads "Burning down the house". 🔥🔥🔥
I saw this man on Broadway last year. As old as he is, he still moves and dances like he's a boy! His voice is the same as it ever was
Great take!! I've always thought about it the same way. Life goes by so fast, and sometimes people just do what's expected of them. All of a sudden it's like 'Who am I? Its a song about water. Every drop never gets lost, filtrated many years by rocks, plants, humans & animals.
Simple.
The Stop Making Sense concert video is the only one I own. What a performer! Any song live is an experience to watch.
Just saw that Stop Making Sense is being re-released in theaters for the 40th anniversary.
@@JJlovesPrince Saw it last night in IMAX, it’s definitely worth it! Such a great show!
I would highly recommend “Life during wartime” or “Slippery People” from the concert/movie called Stop Making Sense. It’s an amazing movie and features the full band. They are amazing live.
LOL! When you said "WTF is he doing?!" at the beginning, I couldn't help but think "yeah, you're going to be saying that a lot during this video". 🤣
Another good Talking Heads is "Take Me To The River" !! Great song...🎶🎸
All I can think of is that singing fish that was popular in like the 90’s or maybe 80’s 😂🤣
@@pennytipp LOL!! I believe that WAS an 80's song, their first "hit!" It's really catchy, kinda like fishies 😂
Good and sincere reaction Shon. If yo do new reactions to Talking Heads try with the ones in "Stop Making Sense". Do you remember your reaction when David Byrne was running all around the stage? That is one 😉

nice! David mentioned his movements in the vid were inspired by a preacher in a deep south revival tent type feeling the holy spirit.
You have GOT to check more of them out live, from their Stop Making Sense show, the energy they bring is insane! It's all so good!
I was 10 when this song came out and I remember loving it so much and as I grab, and the Talking Heads became more prominent, I was crazy about them! Such a freaking great band
Ferris Bueller had an expression that fits here "Life moves pretty fast. It you don't stop to look around once in a while you could miss it".
David Byrne is a great artist.
Talking Heads created some fantastic art in their day
Thank You Hilly Kristal and CBGB's for giving the Talking Heads a stage to perform on when no one else would 😎😎😎

Awesome channel. Really enjoy your insight!
The Talking Heads are a total vibe. Pretty much loved or hated, very little in between. David Byrne is a genius. The band is also tight AF.
The lyrics and delivery of the verses are deliberately evocative of Southern Baptist preachers, who were huge on AM radio in the late 70s. Most notably sampled in KC Flight's Planet E, also Chuck Chillout and Kool Chips Rhythm is the Master which also used Grace Jones Slave to the Rhythm.

Gotta check them out live. Life During Wartime from their Stop Making Sense show is a must!
Hey SHON- you haven't lived until you have seen them do "life during lifetime" live. It regularly blows reactors away.
Talking Heads are a bit of a quirky band, but another big hit they had in the 80s you may want to check out is "Burning Down The House".
“Burning Down The House” should be the next song of theirs that you should react to. You will really like it! It was so popular!
This song will grow on you brother !
Thanks, Shon - David was a genius.. lol - appreciate your reactions...
"My God, what have I done" is what the pilot who dropped the nucear bomb on Japan said.
My favorite song by them is Road to Nowhere, and Wild wild life
Road to Nowhere is SENSATIONAL - a work of genius.
Looooove The Talking Heads! Their song 'Burning Down the House" is in my top 20 favorite songs of all time. A must listen!
Thank you for your honesty!! ❤
Awesome, dude! You really analyzed this song well!
I don't think I go 3 business days without quoting this song into daily conversation. Some get it sone don't...it's perfection.
Great reaction 👏👏👏
Must check out the entire concert “Stop making sense”
This is a fantastic analysis, thanks. I used to listen to the Talking Heads as a teen and I didn't really take in that message.
These guys aim to entertain, and they do.
One more of theirs for you: 'Burning Down the House". ( Live, from around the same time.) Killer!
Check out “Born Under Punches”, “Crosseyed and Painless” and “Heaven” live versions. You need to SEE them perform!
OMG You got all the major points that us art-nerds discuss within the first minute-and-a-half! Rock on, my man! (
you got it - you might be the only one out of all the reactors
When you see a live video of them... you are getting the real deal I promise haha
I heard this aged 9 and immediately recognised it as me.
Diagnosed 5 years ago.
This is about autism 100%.
Tina from the group wrote and sang genius of love...everyone knows that song

Thanks for being there Shon.
Shon you are always very insightful to be so young!
Great reaction to a great song! ✌❤
David Byrne was inspired by radio preachers while on tour in the south
"This is not my beautiful house! This is not my beautiful wife!!" ... early incarnation of Imposter Syndrome
Singing? It’s the “talking” heads. LOL
I'm not sure if anyone would say a talking heads tune is a banger, but some of them are catchy and fun.
Now you just have to react to the entire Stop Making Sense live concert :-)
I know I'm late to this party - you're one of the few to look past the visual dance aspect of David Byrne being a weird artist dude to actually listen to the message and 'get it'.
Eff it, have a sub - you've earned it!
Talking Heads cover ‘Memories Can’t Wait’ by Living Colour. ☮️❤️
What is funny is that you will probably not listen to this for a long time and then one day you'll find yourself listening to it again out of the blue! Lol
Check out Tears for Fears. Great band. Everybody wants To Rule The World. Just Died In Your Arms. Two good ones✌️
How David didn’t need a chiropractor after this video is a miracle.:
Would love to hear a reaction to Erasure. Chains of love and A little respect are the most well known, but from a lyrics standpoint, Piano Song would be a good choice.
A fucking classic!
Hello from Cody Wyoming 😊you're awesome keep it up
Scrollin along and saw ya boy in the foreground of a talking heads vid still, and i gotta say

Or naive melody.
Like I said, it really doesn't matter. It's all fire.
You should react to the song “mapa”by yeahs yeahs yeahs, thanks for the reaction

by talking heads its a good one
Same song live...big white suit is worth checking out
The 80s was a wierd time 😅
"Psycho Killer" next please
I always thought the singer sounds like Robin Williams in parts of this song.
Unique tune 👍🏽
THIS IS THE LIFE by LIVING COLOR is another great song w/ a similar theme-not sure if this channel has done a reaction to them but highly recommended
While I love the band they went so mainstream around this time and got overplayed. It took me decades to go back and enjoy this album .
I always thought maybe his movements were meant to mimic a marionette...
College Band Music in the 1980s
Memphis bleek and jaY z did a song its alright. Listen to that one its the sample of this song but slowed down
Preaching is a great word - in a way he’s doing the opposite!
Very perceptive
you need to do "family Tree" by Wheeler Walker Jr.
Please react to some Richard Marx. Angelia, Hazard, Endless Summer Nights....
Try diggin' on some Type O Negative
master

David Byrne was a strange dude. Made some great songs, tho.
Check out "wild wild life"!!!!
When you watch the movie down and out in Beverly Hills the song will make dance sometimes things stop making since like the movie breakfast club the song at the end makes all eyes open think don’t reacted with out thinking
Such a strange band...but so gd talented...
This was the core of the "New Wave" Sound of the early 80s. All so forgettable.
Cool you're being straight about not ever hearing this track again, but if you do hear it... you might just turn it up a bit saying, yep, ain't that the Truth
