  • Learn how to do use Large Spiral & Multi-Lane Roundabouts. We filmed a lot of this video using a Mavic Pro Drone and Go Pro Hero 5 Black.
    In this short video we try and make Spiral & Large Multi-Lane Roundabouts as simple as possible. Although the thought of large Multi-Lane Roundabouts seems scary. In a lot of cases they are very well laid out with signs and road marking. So, if you understand what to look for and what they mean. They can become much easier than you first thought.
    Example 1 - 00:08, Winchester road roundabout example 1 going tight third exIt from the ring road to Winchester road.
    Example 2 - 02:49, Again on the Winchester road roundabout, this time from Winchester road onto the ring road also going right third exit.
    Example 3 - 04:47, Again same roundabout but going ahead 2nd exit from the Winchester road across the ring road and staying on the Winchester road towards the town centre.
    With any junction, don’t be afraid of going the wrong way. You can always turn around and get back on course later. So, if for example you find yourself in a left only lane on the approach to a Large Multi-Lane Roundabout, but you want to go straight ahead but don’t feel like you have time or its not safe to change lanes. Just go left safely and then turn around later when it is safe. Even on a driving test it does not matter if you go the wrong way if what you do is safe.
    This video was filmed using roundabouts in the area of Basingstoke Driving Test Centre in Hampshire, on the Winchester Road Roundabout,
    If you have any questions about Large Multi-lane, please comment below and we will reply ASAP. We Are driving instructors that teach people to use Large Multi-Lane Runabouts every day, so we have great experience to answer your questions with, and are happy to help.

    ive had my licence for a while but cant do large roundabouts. these dont look too hard, try ones with more than 3 exits, busy so you cant see the road markings, the dotted lines to show your lane have rubbed off. those are the roundabouts i always find myself in the wrong lane

    I am new in UK and driving on my Intl. license, I found your videos really helpful. Before travelling on unfamiliar roads, I check my route on google maps and mark down large roundabouts, then use a google earth or street view to check markings, signs to learn what lane I should take. I know most of us don't have time for this, but this little education saves me from honking of impatient angry drivers :)

    Passed my driving test last year. Now planning a trip to the UK next year if covid doesn't get in the way, so I'm watching these videos so I know how to use the roundabouts in the UK. We have roundabouts where I am but nothing like this, the roundabouts in Australia are simple and easy to use.

      Well even skilled driving instructors with years of experience have complained about how confusing the spiral roundabouts is for them! I wasn't even taught about spiral roundabouts in my learner driver days nor was it included in the test or else very likely I would of failed it! hahaaa! It looks like as though some lanes would take you elsewhere! like the last time I could not take the exit I wanted cause a vehicle was on my left side so I had to use unnecessary extra fuel to go into a motorway that was not taking me to my destination which on that occasion was home which was frustrating to say the least! spiral roundabouts can be a pain!

    This video is great, with its overhead drone footage of one of these beasts. It’s good to actually see a live example as opposed to relying on the pictures of perfect Disneyesque 2 lane, 4 exits at 90° you get in the highway code.
    However at ground level there is limited perception of where the lanes go, especially if cars are covering the road number markings, as you recite A3427(W) over and over in your head. You then realise you’re on a roundabout with 4 lanes, where all the markings have worn away, large sections have no lane indicators at all, or there’s a massive yellow crosshatch section in front of you. You basically have to guess if where you are is even a lane at all, and hopefully your perception won’t differ too much from the drivers around you.
    If it’s at night and raining heavily…., the lights from the cars around you look so pretty through the raindrops on your mirror and side windows, twinkling as you contemplate if your will is up to date, and wish you arranged a good funeral plan and got that free pen.
    At this point, getting off the roundabout alive is the main priority. If you happen to exit at the right lane, that would be a miracle. But don’t worry if you do leave at the wrong exit, there will be another roundabout in 20 miles or so, where you can do a U turn and head back again, if you’re lucky. 🙂

    Great video. Very well explained. Only question is, no right signal when going past 12 o'clock? When I learnt many years ago, that was a golden rule. Is there really no right signal to be used on these roundabouts? You just follow the lane markings and hope all other drivers are paying full attention?

    • @ThinkDriving
      @ThinkDriving  2 роки тому

      Hi depends on the roundabout,
      The most important thing with your signals is that they don’t mislead, so as long as they don’t.
      Roundabouts are all so different it ups to you to work out the best way for each one

    Had my license for years now but these junctions still give me a lot of anxiety. If I am doing a journey where these are unavoidable, I will literally use street view to work out the rules of that roundabout, write down instructions for it and learn it off by heart. Learn what lane I need to be in, what exit I need to take, where the lights are, etc.
    About a year ago I was on one of these roundabouts (it was a motorway junction) and I'd learned the whole thing, it was a REALLY complex junction with four lanes and loads of exits. While I was just going through the motions of what I'd learned, nailing the roundabout with pure book smarts, a dude in the lane to my right cut across 2 lanes - cutting me up bigtime - and dived into the exit they were about to miss.

      Hi sorry for the slow reply,
      So the problem with driving is that there a very few hard and fast rules.
      If you need to change lanes and feel a signal is going to be more helpful than misleading, then it’s probably a good idea but keep us short, 2/3 flashes. And if someone does pull out in front of you because of it don’t be annoyed as you understand why they did it.
      If you are following the lanes correctly then it should be safe to be moving lanes with the correct observations
      Hope this helps

    @2:31 if you were to use the orange lane here, would you still indicate left to come off the roundabout, as this may look like you wish to change lane? so if for example you were planning a right turn after the roundabout and wanted to stay in the right lane, would you still signal left in that lane to leave the round about and then cancel quickly, or would this confuse people.

      Thomas Hayward great question,
      If the roundabout was not traffic light controlled then definitely yes, as the help it would give to the the people coming on would our way the the misleading it may cause the people to your left, but keep it short and snappy. Hope that makes sense.

    Hi.
    If you have a multi lane spiral roundabout which isn’t traffic light controlled. You’re turning right. The spiral moves you from the centre of the roundabout out to the middle lane, would you let your signal cancel even though you haven’t yet passed the penultimate exit and still pass 2 exits before you are in the left lane ready to leave the roundabout.

    • @ThinkDriving
      @ThinkDriving  2 роки тому

      Let’s look at the positives and negatives about it.
      So if we let it cancel, will it effect anyone? Probably not, anyone following you probably have a pretty good idea of where you are heading if you are following the lines well. Anyone coming into the roundabout that can see you will be thinking you are coming off soon as you are in the middle lane and not the right, so if anything the signal still being on may confuse those people, they may think you are trying to move back to the right lane, making you look like you are doing further round than you are.
      So negatives, anyone that is following you might now be confused if you are going right anymore or not.
      So I’d say the positives out way the negatives of letting it cancel. What do you think?

    Do I understand correctly that if the exit has 2 lanes, then no indicator is necessary on the outer lane [ which has no further continuation on spiral roundabound anyway ]...but indicator is necessary when exiting from inside lane which gives 2 offers- an exit...or continuing further down the roundabound? I understand that indicating is needed when one finds himself in wrong lane and needs to do last moment correction if it is safe to do so.

    • @ThinkDriving
      @ThinkDriving  3 роки тому

      Hi, When considering a signal, consider if it will be more helpful or more misleading. As long as its not misleading then it probably a good idea. Remember your signal can be for lots of people not just the cars around you. there may be pedestrians near by the it may help, there could be people coming onto the roundabout that you cant see very well but they can see you and they need to know. ( if they are not from the area they may not know your lane is for only coming off the roundabout.)
      On this particular roundabout being traffic light controlled on most of the entrances your signal off is not going to help the people coming on so much, so consider who else it may help or mislead by doing it.
      Hope this helps? Its probably worth asking your instructor for a chat in more detail and with some pictures of some examples.
