I am binging all of your Japan videos!! I love both of your personalities and appreciate so much that you delve into history and explain what you are seeing so well! Other youtubers would just film themselves eating gold ice cream with no context to it, love how you explained the reason behind why gold is popular in this town. Love the plates that you made too!!
First time watching your channel, I’m going to Kanazawa in a few weeks! Loved the organic and warm feel of this video - thank you for sharing your experiences with us :)
I’m just back from beautiful Japan and my friend and I were so thankful that we stayed in Kanazawa! What an absolute gem of a city to visit. We had 2 days to sightsee and the hotel we stayed in was first class! We voted Kanazawa as our favourite place in Japan that we stayed in. No big crowds and just such a beautiful city. If you visit Japan, you should definitely visit this city.😍
My wife and I were also just there for the 6th or 7th time just to ride the new Shinkansen extension. We were actually there, on our way to Kurobe onsen, In January right after the big earthquake. Kanazawa is one of favorite stops.
@@Clorinda92 I’d definitely stay 2 full days if your itinerary allows. (On our last few trips we stayed one night because we had already been to all the sites and Kanazawa was our stopover to other places.)
There are numerous vlogs of Kanazawa out there but what sets this apart is you cover the have to gold ice creams etc but then go to the many other highlights to be found there that is often overlooked. It was so interesting to see the back streets as just about all I have seen is the main street and popular attractions therein. Thank you as always.
watching this and missing Kanazawa, I was there 2 months ago a, walking those streets, visiting that shrine. Barely saw tourists there and the people there was so nice
I spent three nights in Kanazawa and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was a really pleasant city. I could have easily spent a week. What I have found in these less-visited places is that they have some very good guides. I did two tours there that were very interesting. As an aside, a city that is close by is Takayama and on the way there, you can visit the historic village Shirakawa-go. Train travel to and from both cities was excellent. The best way I found to travel to Shirakawa-go was to hire a car and driver.
We visited Shirakawago and Takayama as well! (and both are in one video on our channel) We could have spent more time in Kanazawa, easily. What a fantastic area and gem of a city!
I was in Kanazawa over 30 years ago to visit my girlfriend at that time. Only site I can recognize from your video was the garden. Thank you for sharing your videos.
I recomend Ise shrine and Okage yokocho in Mie. The atmosphere of old merchant town and huge trees riverside are fantastic. Toba pearl Islands are beautiful, too.
Good to see your guys back to travel again. You can actually buy the gold leaf and make it your own. I bought a small bottle in Singapore and brought it to Glasgow Scotland and added some flakes of gold leaf to my butter cookies for aesthetic purpose :) Enjoy Japan and looking forward to more contents.
We have been to Kanazawa 5 times and have always loved it. We hosted 2 sisters from Kanazawa while they attended college here, they now have families. I love seeing our family there. Hope to be traveling there next year. Kanazawa train station is pretty cool also.
I love Kanazawa. Went there twice. My first visit to the city was before the Hokuriku shinkansen was built and I had to spend almost 5 hours to travel there from Tokyo. It was quieter before but it's still alright now, not overly crowded compared to Kyoto. There are many beautiful modern museums as there are traditional houses. Kenrouken is one of the top 3 gardens in Japan. Beautiful in autumn. Nodoguro (black throat fish) is its specialty and it's delicious! Recommend to rent kimono and walk around to take photos!
Beautiful city! Did you know that the city was spared during the WWII because several American scholars asked the US government not bombed due of the fine craft of the city!
I see. People visit Kanazawa instead of Kyoto. For me,Loving to eat food,I think better place than Kyoto. Ramen, curry, fishes, beef, roast tea etc… all food is unique and phenomena
this is bring me back memories! I loved Kanazawa! i had a similar experience in a very roots ramen place in Kyoto and not only was great as the owner was a sweetheart 9even not speaking much english, she was super happy when I said it was oichi desu) (and had a free sample Match with gold flakes in a shrine fair in Kyoto too... lol I just bought gold goodies in Kanazawa)
It is noteworthy that the fountain in the Kenrokuen Garden you visited and included in the video is the oldest in Japan and the water spouts upward without any mechanical assistance. Positioned below the main lake in the garden the water pressure forces the water upward to reach the level of the lake above.
7:10 You visited this ramen shop!? Why did not you visit the very best traditional cake shop in Kanazawa just over there? One of the great maccha tea master Ura-senke choose this shop as the favorite cake shop. The shop name is Mamehan. This shop style is irregular, reservation only. Shopping at the door is refused, you need to reserve cake the day before.
When eating udon, it is best to eat it without chewing the noodles. If you bite off the noodles with your teeth, you'll end up with a lot of short noodles left behind.
Lovely video, makes me wanna rethink our travel plans this November 😅 What are the main differences between Kanazawa and Takayama when it comes to overall vibe, which one feels less touristy?
Haha, we understand completely! Kanazawa had fewer foreign tourists; both had plenty of local tourists. We had the strangest problem in Takayama. We stayed in a central location and struggled to get dinner without a reservation (not even in the historic area). If you go there, we'd highly recommend dinner reservations! Kanazawa had a bit more local feel, and the river area was gorgeous. Takayama also has a river (not as nice as Kanazawa), and we really enjoyed our walk up in the hills. I'd choose the one that works best with your itinerary. If you'll be near Takayama, go there. If you're traveling from elsewhere, Kanazawa might be the easier option - and is just as nice. (we have a Takayama video, too, if you haven't stumbled across it yet!) 😁
We stayed there for three days towards the end of May and had a wonderful time. Compared to Kyoto, Kanazawa was so much more relaxing and pleasant. We pretty much had all tourists spots to ourselves.
Warriors were indeed wealthy. They were at the top of the hierarchical class of 4 ranks in the Edo period (17-19th century), which were, from the top, warriors, farmers, artisants, and tradesmen.
Hi, the price varies depending on what you choose to work with. I think the least expensive was a pair of chopsticks. We don't remember the prices being expensive. 😊
Yes, there was once a legendary elixir of eternal youth and longevity in Japan, which was water with a hint of gold mixed in it. And it still exists today.

This is such a great video. Thank you so much for sharing. You helped me lots navigating this city.

Kanazawa genuinely surprised us with how delightfully picturesque it is. One of our most favorite cities in Japan so far (along with Nagasaki).

Eating gold has many benefits for your health, it is just not for taste of gold!
It does?? I need to research this!
Yes, there was once a legendary elixir of eternal youth and longevity in Japan, which was water with a hint of gold mixed in it. And it still exists today.
Mmmmmm, pretty sure that’s just conspicuous consumption……
It doesn't do anything except look pretty. It just goes through you. But you are welcome to believe in health benefits if you want to.
Stop overtourism and advertisement!!!!!!
