Such an intimate evening of Japanese culture made even more captivating thanks to the academic historical perspective of food culture and the evolution of Japanese dining habits. It was great watching John and Kanae enjoying their experience and John having fun with the nuances of traditional fine dining. An awesome first effort John!
What a privilege to see ancient Kanazawa traditions in this light. Beautifully shot and edited with perfect musical accompaniment. Kanae is quite the percussionist and co-presenter! A highly enjoyable experience.
I loved every second of this ..i give it a 100 out of 10!! it has the comfort of the old content but with a fresh new style.. this was really great!! i loved that Kanae was such a big part of it :) and she looked very elegant and beautiful i must add :) i am looking forward to all the new content on your channel:D awesome work John and thank you soo soo much for all your hard work !!
Wow, that was 20 minutes?!? I could've sworn I've only been watching for 5... Fantastic video. The shots and editing were great, seriously well done. I'm super excited about the future of this channel! Congrats, John.
Wow! What an episode. One of the best episodes I have ever watched about the Japanese culture and hospitality. Arigato Goziamashta dear John and Kanae!
Thank you for this video and introducing the phrase gochisousama deshita! I visited Japan last year at Kurama, Kyoto and was able to use that phrase to our server and chef as we left. The look of their pleasant surprise really made me grateful to know those words to show our appreciation for the meal.
That was awesome. Kanae looked shocked at the bird 👀 but beautiful of course in the Kimono. And John you did look distinguished in the traditional wear. Great video ♥️
The intro was so fun, the animations is just so fitting. I also throughly enjoyed each part of the video from the scenery to the clothing and most importantly the meal :p.
This has been amazing to watch. Rich in history. After spending 3 weeks in shinjuku, shibuya, Kyoto and Osaka. Japan just makes you want to keep going back to dive more into the endless cultural fascinations, that are foreign to our western world way of life today
John you look so youthful and are glowing, Kanae has become a natural behind the camera too! I hope to see her more on your main channel. This was such a peaceful and beautiful video. The b roll was super tight and clean too. Keep up the great work John! We’re all excited to see more episodes.
I don't think it's possible to drink tea in a more breathtakingly beautiful setting anywhere on planet earth. I loved the greenery with the sound of the rain, and you just sitting there relaxing. Heaven. Absolutely stunning.
I love this channel. Thankyou very much John for teaching me all about Japan for the past 5-ish years. Without your videos with Wao Ryu Japan i would of never found my love for this country! ありがとうございます !
Not the whole experience but a meal like this one with the music and dancers. My real first experience and taste of Japanese food. I was in the navy and it was March of 1968, a group of us traveled up to Tokyo for a full day of being tourists which finished up with a scene much like this. Thanks for the memories!
Loving that the format of your Only in Japan videos haven't changed much in tone! I've always loved how calming yet informative they are, and I'm really glad that despite the move they've retained those qualities.
I'm very fussy when it comes to audio and yours is the best I've heard on UA-cam. You don't over-compress and everything sounds natural. Thanks for such a high production value.
Watching elegant Kanae playing the drum, and dashing John dancing, brought me such joy, I cannot thank you enough for producing this phenomenal video! Stay blessed and safe, everyone.
Every episode on this channel just gets better and better. Gorgeous filmography and great writing! Loving the animated intro, definitely worth the wait.
A well produced video John. Japanese culture is beautiful to the eyes and wonderful to learn. You and Kanae were really handsome in your kimonos! Looking forward for the next video! Great work!
That's what I'm talking about John. That is a great program with great content. Your live feeds are sometimes fun, and I know these edited programs are much more work, but a lot better viewing. Bravo!
Kanae and John. Excellent presentation. I hope the people of Japan never lose their old traditions ! This is like stepping back in time. Kanae is absolute beautiful in traditional Japanese dress.
What an experience!!! I would love to see Geisha live. I have immense respect the performers and the art form. All while eating historical food! As an anthropologist, I love the cultural experiences you document. I live learning how Japan came to be!
Liked! Love your videos, John! Every time I get a notification and see it's you I have something to look forward to. You give some of us experiences that we couldn't dream of seeing ourselves. No one makes content quiet like you. Wish you could put out videos daily. But, with the quality of videos you put out, it's understandable.
"Nagamachi samurai town" *Hire a samurai!* Seriously, I can't stop replaying the intro. It's so good. Love the comic book editing at 6:37. Another great episode.
This is by far my favorite episode. Thank you John and Konai for this funny, adventurous, and learned experience. Additionally, I am so happy for you both. It fills my heart seeing you together. Arigatogosaimasu 🙏
Awesome, production level is much higher. Really interesting and a joy to watch. Thanks John & Kanae. (Loved the pheasant! - could your eyes be any wider🙀)
Glad to see you back in your element John. I love seeing Kanae being a part of your show. Maybe there will be an episode where she shares her knowledge in something she knows more than you? I can actually see this becoming a husband and wife thing. Love it all!
oh wow, i am speechless!! top video john, 10/10, awesome! the dance performance was my favourite part of the video! Looking forward to see more! love your work
I am not going to have to have any lunch, now. Your meal has filled me to the brim. You both looked very special. I do wish I was as naturally elegant as Kanae, but that would take so many years of practice for a clumsy Australian. I love the new intro. It was definitely worth the wait.
i really enjoy the longer format, JD. with the travel ban to japan i think people all around the world will enjoy your videos even more. we all can't wait to visit japan when it's safe to travel and now we will learn new places to visit thanks to you, JD.
You both looked amazing in this livestream. Loved how the food was presented. That's one of the most beautiful things that I loved about my visit to Japan last summer. The way food is treasured there is so wonderful! And of course... the taste! Heaven! ❤😊
I'm a big fan of historical food and recipes, so this was super interesting. I loved hearing about how first one was eaten for special occasions. I haven't seen any videos on historical Japanese food before , very cool.
If I had a little more time, I would have lived to dive deeper into Otomo-san's recipe book! I am sure I will be back for more in kanazawa. I loved this too much! A refreshing place to enjoy after months in the big city Tokyo.
@@onlyinjapan It looked so charming and relaxing. It's always really nice to go somewhere quieter when you've been in a big city for awhile, and I absolutely loved how you showed that in this video. :)
A beautiful video! I really appreciated the introduction to "Gochisousama deshita" at the end. In these times when we remember the importance of essential workers, it seems most appropriate to think about the plants and animals that we eat and the many, many humans who raise them, harvest them, process them, transport them, sell them, buy them, prepare them, serve them - all for my meal (be it simple or fancy). I don't speak Japanese but I will try to honor the spirit of "Gochisousama deshita" at the table this week. Thank you, John!
Kanae looked gorgeous. You looked good too. And that food. And the entertainment. What gracious hosts. What a wonderful experience. Thank you for sharing.

The way you present your videos really hits the spot that I've always missed in my soul, hopefully one day I can visit the places you went to in a more peaceful world
John, Thank you so much! Especially during the time like this, I have been staying at home and working at home day in day out for so long. Hope I can travel to Japan again soon. Please stay safe everybody.
The quality of this video is exceptional. Really learned so much about Kanazawa and definitely have bookmarked it for places to visit next time we travel to Japan! Great job!
John and Kanae: I literally bawled toward the end of this episode. Why did it move me so? The music? The beautiful scene and spirits of the ancestors flowing through the two of you, the performers and those who prepared the medieval meal? The history as explained by the chef? My Tokyo 2020 memorabilia I purchased last summer while vacationing in Japan? It was probably a culmination of all of this, August 6, and how much I admire the Japanese and their culture combined with how much my husband and I miss Japan so much (3 weeks was NOT enough) and traveling in general. Thank you always for sharing your insights. This American really needs to get away/ escape through your lens from time to time.
Wow! John, I love the new intro and this whole video is epic! I don't comment much, just hit all the Likes, but this time I had to come tell you how great this is. I love all the videos you put up, especially when it's you and Kanae, and in kimono! Keep up the fantastic work!! 💜
Hi, John! Just wanna say that I appreciate this new channel so much, the same way I loved the previous one. Only In Japan quickly became one of my favorite channels ever and it's one of the first things on UA-cam that really deepened my interest in all things Japan! Too bad I only discovered the channel after my Tokyo trip. Hoping to come back someday soon and hopefully bump into you along the way. Ha!
John you have completely sold me on Kanazawa. Last year at Nagano station, I was contemplating whether to go to Kanazawa or return to Tokyo and since it was already 2:30pm I regrettably went back to Tokyo.
Hey John! I must stay, the edits on this video are very good! I think the camera work was very thoughtful (I felt like I was there!) and the special effects are a really great touch. Great work John and Kanae! It must be hard working from scratch considering this virus, but I'm with you all the way buddy!
Another great episode John! Beautiful place. Another one to add to the list to visit once we are able to. The look on yours and Kanae’s faces during THAT scene though! Priceless 😂😂😂
I love the Kanazawa castle and it's Kenroku-en garden, which is a symbol to Wabi Sabi, a world view centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection, as it remains incomplete. Moreover thanks for such an amazing content and high quality images about Japan, I really appreciate knowing more about the 400 year old japanese cuisine.
I think somehow you seem happier and more energetic in your new videos. You seem to really enjoy what you do and it really shows. Thank you for teaching us new things constantly, you really do open my eyes to new concepts and culture. I would love to be able to go there and experience it in person.
Excellent vid, John. Thank you so much for your work. What an amazing trip back to previous Japanese history. I hope to visit someday and will make a point of stopping in that town.
I love your videos and hope to use them as inspiration for my own trip to Japan. I was meant to go in 2021 but I don't really want to go during olympics so I hope to go in 2022. Your videos are always amazing and I always look forward to seeing new ones! I hope everything is going well with the transition between company channel to your own. Japan is one of my all time hopeful vacation locations! Hello from Ottawa Canada! Stay healthy!
These places are so beautiful it’s hard to wrap your head around how these places really exist 😱 the food looks so good I hope so badly to go to Japan one day 🙏🏽 thank you for the great videos
Thank you for putting high quality English closed captions on this very interesting and well-produced film about the Japanese cuisine of 400 years ago! As a deaf person, you enabled me to access your content fully.
ONLY in JAPAN * John Daub Not only for me - a lot of speakers of foreign languages turn on the English captions because they often encounter difficulty to understand the accent of the English speaker and find it easier to read along. Another use case would be watching your video on a phone while in the subway train or in a noisy environment.
I had a wonderful experience in Kanazawa when I did a study abroad program back in 2018! It was a lovely city with many great people. The history and traditions of that city were breathtaking! There is so much more there for you to discover, present, and show to the world John, as I'm sure you know! I'm very happy that you and Kanae had what looks like a wonderful time there. Keep up the great content, and best wishes with the new channel!
It’s been my dream to visit Japan someday. As an English teacher to Japanese students online, my students also introduce me to their culture. I’m happy to discover this channel. I subscribe right away because I love Japan 🇯🇵 💖 Thank you very much for featuring the rich culture of Japan!
I think both Mr. John and Ms. Kanae did great as Daimyos. I mean, eating all 3 trays of food, that pheasant dish, the alcohol... i probably wouldn't be able to move let alone dance (or try to 🤣🤣🤣✌)

I have checked your videos after maybe 3-4 months, damn they have improved by leaps and bound..that intro is dope !!! Great stuff, John !!
Welcome to the new channel! It’s always gotten better little by little and I’m happy to restart ONLY in JAPAN here.
The only channel that you get such deep cultural experience of japan?? JD*Only in Japan 👌🎎🎏🎋
JDOIJ \(^_^)/
John, you and Kanae make wonderful hosts for these videos. Thanks so much for sharing this with all of us. Charles
Well done - interesting content, beautifully filmed. Kanea is the star.
Thanks! It’s a challenge but I’m up to it and so is our community! It’s great to be free and back at this ٩(^‿^)۶
Another great episode John!
This series is exceptional. Better than the previous. I’m looking forward to more!
I would agree with that :) give it time, I'm going to build an amazing library here!
@@onlyinjapan I agree... Now I begin to understand why you remain Hokutosei virgin for so long.
I think somehow you seem happier and more energetic in your new videos. You seem to really enjoy what you do and it really shows. Thank you for teaching us new things constantly, you really do open my eyes to new concepts and culture. I would love to be able to go there and experience it in person.
Well done john once again, I was eagerly waiting for your episode.
Another great video, John. I really enjoyed it and found it to be very informative. Still think that the animated opening is amazing.
Such a wonderful story about this lovely place. Cant wait to go back!
Quality content as always. You'll get to a million in no time.
Thank you for putting high quality English closed captions on this very interesting and well-produced film about the Japanese cuisine of 400 years ago! As a deaf person, you enabled me to access your content fully.
I’ll try my best to add them in and thank you so much for letting me know they’re useful! It definitely tells me the effort is worth it *\(^o^)/*
ONLY in JAPAN * John Daub Not only for me - a lot of speakers of foreign languages turn on the English captions because they often encounter difficulty to understand the accent of the English speaker and find it easier to read along.
Another use case would be watching your video on a phone while in the subway train or in a noisy environment.
congrats JD!!! my heart skipped a beat when i saw that anime intro!
Your production quality hasn't suffered in the slightest! Keep up the good work sir!
I’d hope not! I’ve always done it all myself and I can’t skip now ;) onward and upward!
What an amazing experience that meal must have been. The food looked amazing, and the private entertainment just for you two... such a privilege.
Favorite Japanese exploration channel on UA-cam! Thank you John!
I think both Mr. John and Ms. Kanae did great as Daimyos. I mean, eating all 3 trays of food, that pheasant dish, the alcohol... i probably wouldn't be able to move let alone dance (or try to 🤣🤣🤣✌)
Incredible quality video production 👍 plus a very interesting story and a super informative in every minutes, keep up the good work, John!
And i like how we can somehow know what’s John doing before and after this video, with the Go Channel, you gotta appreciated it a lot
Man, that ceremony with the flaming sake in a room with dried grass mats and paper walls is badass!
They have a lot of guts to do it too! The staff has done it many times and the place is still there :) I wish I could have turned off ALL THE LIGHTS! It's even more impressive in the dark. I'll post that on instagram stories tomorrow: http:/instagram.com/onlyinjapantv
That Was Very Enjoyable , Especially the Drumming Part and Dancing !! Thanks for Sharing with the World!!
