After hearing it, at the request of his manager, Louis Armstrong made a demonstration-recording of "Hello, Dolly!" used to promote the show. MANY of Jerry Herman's show-tunes became pop great standards including "Hello, Dolly!" which became a #1 hit in the United States (covered by Louis Armstrong), knocking The Beatles from #1 in 1964 after a 14-week run at the top ("I Want to Hold Your Hand", "She Loves You", and "Can't Buy Me Love."). A French recording by Petula Clark charted in the Top Ten in both Canada and France. Many great actresses including Carol Channing, Ethel Merman, Mary Martin, Ginger Rogers, Madeline Kahn, Barbra Streisand, Bette Midler and Bernadette Peters all have performed the role in it's original context.
