I cannot tell you what it was like during one of the opening previews. It was the most spellbinding and magical evenings of my entire life. I saw a legend. I was stricken with heart palpitations because I could NOT comprehend what I was witnessing. I will never forget this revival.
Totally agree with you! The audience was on fire just filing in to see the show. Every song, every laugh, every everything had the audience crazy. It was an evening to remember --- forever...... Just thinking of the ovation when she made her entrance -- gives me goose bumps.
Agreed - we've been seeing Broadway shows for 30 years now, and have seen some great ones. This was the most enthralling evening of musical theatre either of us had ever seen. Bette always seems to be having such a ball and she brings the audience with her. PS - This MAY have been the actual performance we attended - I think I hear my own voice in the audience cheering!
My brother saw "Hello, Dolly" with Pearl Bailey. He said after the "Hello Dolly" number, the audience's response was so boisterous that they stopped the show, and Pearl did a brief stand up comedy before returning to the show. The audience loved it.
Bette Midler murdered the divine miss m by 1979 and has given us schlock since. I wasted $150 for this crap just to see how bad she was. She couldn’t be the divine miss m ever again. Barry, Bill Hennessy, jerry boat created a legend out of a mediocre performer. Watch her on David Frost before the guys created the phenomenon that was miss m.
Vicki Friend Me, too, Vicki! I saw Carol multiple times: On Broadway, on the summer musical circuit, and on a national tour. She never disappointed, and each performance was different.
I saw Hello Dolly twice in New York as a teenager, once with Ginger Rogers (my God, her energy was huge) and then I saw it with Pearl Baily and Cab Calloway with an all-Black cast. Pearl Bailey had such warmth and charm plus a great singing voice and comedic flair. After the show, she called on stage Loretta Young, the Hollywood actress, who was sitting one row behind me, to come on stage and join her in a song. Later I asked Ms. Young for her autograph. And around the same time, I saw Mame at the Palace Theater, with another famous actress, who is still performing to this day......Angela Landsberry. Around the same time I was grateful to see two other shows, both at the Palace Theater, one was an evening with Marlena Deitrich and the other was an unforgettable Judy Garland concert. So many legends! The one star I actually got to chat with for a few minutes was Marlena Deitrich. In her mid-60's at the time she was still very statuesque and radiant. Talk about charisma!!!! Her grandson and I attended the same college in the States, in the same year.
I have been blessed to have seen so many shows on Broadway, but this one will forever stand out in my mind. The opening scene when she first put her head up and everyone in the audience saw her for the first time was electrifying. I’ve never felt such energy in the audience.
When my daughter was little, she'd ask me to sing "Hello Dolly" to her before she went to sleep. So taking her to see this for her ninth birthday was an amazing experience for both of us. Plus, Bette Midler was my mother's all-time favorite performer and, sadly, never got to see her live before she died. I felt like she was sitting with the two of us. Thank you for capturing this wonderful moment.
One of the best nights of my life. Bette, Gavin, David Hyde Pierce, the sets, the costumes, the theatre....everything. With family and friends. Dinner in Times Square. Can't beat it. And the audience reaction? Priceless.
I know it's anathema to say this, but I never saw the point of Carol Channing. Yet Barbra Streisand, magnificent singer as she is, made no sense as Dolly, a gal who's been around the block and back --she was waaaaaaaaaaay too young. Bette is the sweet spot. She is, let's say, of a certain age; she can act, and, golly, can she SING!
I don’t know man, Carol Channing was dolly. Not just did she play her bit she was her. When she started in dolly she was 43. Bette is great no doubt but nothing beats carols og version
Agree Barbara Streisand was too young and not endearing in the part and I love Striesand in everything else she has done. Sadly I missed Bette Midler, but I did see Carol Channing in Detroit when she came back famous after her Broadway success. And Betty Buckley... fabulous in Chicago and fondly Tijuana Shepherd as Dolly senior year Cass Tech High School Detroit 1976❤

I recently showed my 2nd - 5th graders just this number from the movie with Barbra Streisand because we were talking about Louis Armstrong. They were mesmerized!
