Nice video mate. I've got a Weebil S with transmission system attached to my BMPCC4K, and am currently trying to get over my fear of using it in public and looking like I'm working for some corporation and not because I like making videos haha
Big fans of the handheld look here 🙌 Although every shot/project is of course different. In our commercials, we often use a dolly or crane to achieve smooth-looking but also dynamic shots, whereas on more doco type projects we love handheld.
Very very important video! Key element to creating the right atmosphere in a project comes down to the origin of the shot. Decision making in the types of camera movement!
Such an underrated creator. Loved this guide/ breakdown on why to use handheld v gimbal. I'm thinking about filming an intense, low lit, dramatic drink commercial of an athlete training, and this video definitely helped me out!
Hi James. I have been following you for a long time, and seeing you progress and the improvements to the quality is nothing but inspiring to me. I have learned so much from you in my journey to improve. You should be at 1 million + followers but im absolutely certain you'll be there sooner rather then later. Cheers from Denmark!
As a beginner filmmaker i am always thinking and struggling to make thing "seem" good. But actually this one made me see feeling side along each shot and video. Greate point thanks you alot maite.
This is a great video. As a new videographer myself, I often wonder if I need a gimbal or not and if I did have one, when I would use it and when I wouldn't etc. This has cleared a lot of doubts up for me so thanks!
I agree with you, i just spend 6 days at music festival here in Swiss Alps handheld only, i spend quality time with Solomun, Hot since 82 and etc. Great video im actualy going to do gym video, like u said to start gimbal but then handheld only
Dude, again I learned so much in your video! Also I use all the grading tricks yoúve reached to us, but this also helps a lot! Taking people with us= handheld, introducing and observing the scene= gimbal
This is super helpful information, I always wonder about what method I should use to shoot. It really depends on what I'm trying to implicate and I can choose that. Thank you for this awesome information
For the car part, it's actually depend on the story, for exemple, one of the best automotive video i(ve seen is pennzoil ad, and they use a lot of handheld movement
If you were crazy limited in space for exemple while traveling....would you sacrifice the gimbal (electronique / Glydecam) or would you sacrifice other things to make room for it ?? Cuz thinking about it... I rock a glydecam and whenever I am able to bring it, (car or at home) I do use it....but hiking...it get kinda heavy... Whats your thought on that James ??
Great thoughts. I've honestly always been a big fan of having the camera on sticks for a lot of more narrative type filmmaking. When the camera becomes a distraction to the audience understanding the story (too much shaky cam or too crazy of gimbal or crane shots) it's better to get back to basics. That said, I love me some handheld and shoulder rig as well in the right scenario. I've been subconsiously applying a lot of these methods for years in determining which type of camera movement is best, but it's interesting to hear it verbalized.
Mate, cheers for this one. Great to have an insight into your thoughts and experience with both handheld and smooth footage. And I had fun watching as always 😎
Yes mate! Great video, and extremely useful information. I think the fundamentals of motivated camera movements aren't nearly touched on enough by a lot of the bigger YT 'filmmakers, so your video is a diamond in the rough. Thank you!
Thank you James! Great advice. Are there certain techniques to doing camera movement? Or, do you just let the camera move naturally as you continuously position yourself during your shots?
Alo You Lot 😉

Absolutely mate 👌🏻 Easily overlooked when it comes to the language of the shot
"If you're a client, everything's a f'ing pan" 😂 AMEN!
Such an underrated creator. Loved this guide/ breakdown on why to use handheld v gimbal. I'm thinking about filming an intense, low lit, dramatic drink commercial of an athlete training, and this video definitely helped me out!
Glad to hear it mate 👌🏻 Hope the shoot goes well 👊🏻
This is an amazing video 10000x more important than what camera you use. THANK YOU for putting camera movement at the forefront. More of this plz!!!
I always use handheld on casting couch shoots to bring the viewer into the scene even more 🔥😁
Story is KING! Shot for your content bud. Always love it ✌🏼
thank you james i really like that you talk about how to use the camera movement to tell the story instead of technical stuff

Most accurate video about camera moves , Love it 👍❤
I love the reasons behind handheld and smooth shoots. Makes much sense and I'll definitely try it out
As a beginner filmmaker i am always thinking and struggling to make thing "seem" good. But actually this one made me see feeling side along each shot and video. Greate point thanks you alot maite.
Really helpful..Simple delineations...Thank you...
I keep on repeating this. There is a time and place for a gimbal as there is for handheld. Being consequential to the script is key.
Time and a place for drones as well.
Really true 👍🏻 camera movement is very important
Totally agree 👌🏻
So helpful James. Really helpful!
Very helpful and straight to the point. Thank you very much 😊
This is a great video. As a new videographer myself, I often wonder if I need a gimbal or not and if I did have one, when I would use it and when I wouldn't etc. This has cleared a lot of doubts up for me so thanks!

Totally makes sense what you say. Cheers!

Yes mate! Great video, and extremely useful information. I think the fundamentals of motivated camera movements aren't nearly touched on enough by a lot of the bigger YT 'filmmakers, so your video is a diamond in the rough. Thank you!
Yeah man. Totally agree. Such an important element for me. It’s not exciting and techy enough for people to want to talk about I don’t think

@@Jamesmatthews your welcome
looking like a filmmaking daddy in this video bro
Nice Jacket
When shooting those "intense" handheld styles of footage, if you're using a mirrorless camera do you keep image stabilization on or off?
For me, off. Especially if it has a good rolling shutter like the A7siii or Fx3. But for a wedding I would keep it on
