I'm still angry that Klavan hates Zelda and probably isn't aware of Metroid. Super Metroid and at least a few other entries in the franchise are arguably top 20's, maybe even top 10's.
Way back in the day I remember EGM (back when they were still relevant) had Super Metroid as #1 on their Greatest Games of All Time List (this was probably ~2000). It's what made me check out the game. Great decision! Still among the best designed worlds ever, despite so many other games copying its template.
I've spent so many hours of my life playing the Sims franchise and the Batman Arkham games (especially Arkham City). Andrew said he played so much Tetris that he would walk around and put shapes together in his mind. After playing the Arkham games for so long, whenever I see a grate, I consider tearing it off the wall and climbing in.
I know what Klavan means about GTA. I wish it wasn’t so cynical and negative all the time. But I love the variety of activities you can do in a vast open world game. And in GTA V, I liked how they added activities in throughout the game so you wouldn’t complete all of them in the first half leaving nothing but the main storyline after that. Lastly I liked the things you had to do to prepare for heists, like scouting the area, choosing a strategy, choosing crew members, planting a getaway car in a nearby location, and getting needed materials or vehicles. As for The Last of Us, I wonder if Klavan was a player who rushed through it without hearing most of the conversations that characters had or reading notes that added depth to characters and the environment. Someone who plays like that can’t appreciate the nuances of the plot because they simply never hear most of it. I thought it was beautiful how Joel began by resenting Ellie and treating her with impatience, but by the end he cared about her so much that he was willing to risk the extinction of the human race rather than have her die.

Ratchet & Clank 2: Going Commando Still to this day one of the funniest games I ever played. Outstanding gameplay, outstanding creativity. Almost a perfect game. Up there in S+ tier along with God of War
Is Andrew a gamer? This is so weird to watch him actually know these games and talk like he is losing sleep every night grinding video games. This was mind blowing.
I used to consider World of Warcraft as the greatest game of all time at some point. It was the only game that actually got me addicted. But that was a long time ago, I played it during the Wrath, Cataclysm and Pandaria expansions. WoW definitely was one of the greatest too, but only until certain expansions. It changed too much over the decades.
Obviously personal taste, but Super Mario Sunshine is my favorite, games that come close that I have played are Super Metroid, Metroid Zero Mission, Chrono Trigger, Wreckfest, Eternal Darkness, Okami, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, Super Mario World, Pokemon Platinum, GTA San Andreas, GTA Online, NASCAR Thunder 03, Mario Golf Toadstool Tour, Super Smash Bros Melee and Brawl, Mario Kart Wii, Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword, and my first game, Luigi’s Mansion.
I still cannot believe there is another older, bald, conservative, born again Christian dude running around who knows and loves his video games! Hats off to you, brother!
Legend of Zelda is one of the greatest game series of all time. It does not have even one bad mainline game after 30 years. Though I would not necessarily argue with anyone who claims OOT is overrated. People loved GoldenEye because of the multiplayer. Fun fact, the multiplayer was not an approved part of the design and was hacked together by the devs just weeks before they finalized the game.
I think OoT is overrated, but I would argue with Klavan. The guy talks about Zelda like someone who just got into gaming circa GameCube and just parroted the "animation" complaint like that was the whole of the series.
I wouldn't say it's overrated (although it's not my favourite personally). I mean, it's basically the blueprint for so many games just in terms of gameplay mechanics. Target lock on, context sensitive buttons etc. The story and adventure for the time just blew people away.
There are a lot of differences between Diablo 1 and Diablo 2, but the difference that makes D1 unplayable today is not the graphics, it's not the cinematic, it's not the story, it's that you WALK SO SLOW, D2 introduced running and nobody could ever go back
The Sims (4) has become infected and certain man-made chest scars were added, Jen Dur stuff and they are about to add polyamory. This is a game played by millions of young children! I hope parents are aware of this.
Did I miss the award winning MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV? Somehow I didn’t hear any final fantasy on that list. I’ve been a gamer since I had to sit in the laundromat in the 80’s playing centipede while my mom washed the clothes, and there are no games I love quite as much as the final fantasy series, especially XIV.
-10 points for putting Zelda at B +50 points for saying SMB3 is the better than SM64, but still recognizing that SM64 is an amazing game (my personal fave is SMW, but whatever)
Don't get me wrong Ocarina of Time is a great game, but I think Link to the Past beats it pretty easily. On another note there's a sad lack of 4th and 5th generation games. Chrono Trigger, Castlevania Symphony of the night, Final Fantasy VII, Metal Gear Solid, and of course the previously mentioned The Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past.

People loved Goldeneye not so much for the story mode but because of the multiplayer mode. It was almost endless fun for my brothers and me as kids, more so for my brothers who were older and better. Almost endless because then Super Smash Brothers came out and that was THE game until we grew up.
I would probably add Elden Ring and / or the first Dark Souls to this list. For a lot of years, I never understood the appeal of these kinds of games. Then I picked up Elden Ring, which let me to the original Souls trilogy. And it well and truly enthralled me.
Devil May Cry 3 is one of the few, if not the only game I finished, in all its difficulties. I never got bored of it. I highly recommend the Onimusha games if you are a fan of DMC and Resident Evil and like Japanese mythology and samurai combat.
Klavan’s analysis is quite good as long as you don’t include the RPG genre. Even though he’s a novelist, he really doesn’t like or appreciate the RPG genre (his opinion is it’s too story driven, has too many cut scenes, and isn’t action oriented).
Stop overthinking it internet. Tetris, Goldeneye, and GTA 3 (maybe San Andreas!!!) I want to put Street Fighter 2 in there but the fighting game genre is only a little less niche than those damn Madden players.
Bro does not understand that the grand theft auto games trumped every other game by miles the years they came out. You don’t have to kill or even interact with prostitutes in the game. I think it’s a little silly when people have this critique on video games but also enjoy other pieces of media like novels and movies that feature morally ambiguous protagonists
I know it’s still less than a year old, but it did just win 2023 game of the year… it’s Baldur’s Gate 3. Some people think it is the best game of the decade. I love it.
Enjoyable video. Regretfully, I haven't played most of these games so can't evaluate Klavan's judgements; got some recommendations to look into though, so that's good. While I don't see them being on a Greatest Games Ever list, I would like to hear what Klavan thinks of the Alan Wake games.
Gotta be honest, Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil Village are better than RE4 in my opinion. (Story felt more compelling, especially in Village). Love most of the series, but 7 and Village were something else because of the genuine emotional motivation and drive for Ethan in the game. (Also, criminal that Minecraft isn’t on here for what it has done to culture and open world games).
Klavan saying Ico is “maybe the best game ever made” was validating (not that I care about being validated) on a surreal level. It may make up for his disregard for Zelda.

Gow 2 is best game of all times!!
Anyone who dissagre will feel the Power of blade of Olympus!
I'm still angry that Klavan hates Zelda and probably isn't aware of Metroid. Super Metroid and at least a few other entries in the franchise are arguably top 20's, maybe even top 10's.
Ok but he likes Prince of Persia so maybe I'll forgive him.
@@educationalporpoises9592He thinks the "time travel" game is the second one in the series.
@@Sweetestsadist
As he stated when there are lots of games in a series it can blend together.
One time I blinked and for a split second my vision entered Detective Mode irl
Dang, no love for RDR or RDR 2?!
Doesn't like Zelda? I haven't seen an old man lose ALL credibility so quickly since... well, the debate last night.
I need the Klavan's take on Kingdom Come Deliverance and then see him play the 2nd one when it comes out later this year
Mario ( most of them)
Zelda (most of them)
Metroid (most of them)
Donkey Kong (most of them)
Diablo 1&2
Grand Tourismo 3,4,5
Halo series
Ninja Gaiden Xbox
Red Dead Redemption series
God of War series
You already broke my heart on triggernometry with answering my Zelda question 😢 but it's cool to see a conservative commentator actually talk about stuff like gaming
People get upset at your opinions but it’s refreshing to see a guy just say what’s in his mind instead of appeasing everyone.
Some games I love most are:
Old animal crossing
Mario Kart (pretty much any)
Yume Nikki
Super Metroid
Castlevania Aria of Sorrow Hollow Knight
Castle Crashers
Ocarina of Time
Dead Cells
Ico and Shadow of the Colossus are possibly the best games ever made. I’ve played a ton of games old and new, Zelda is the epitome to me. Super Metroid also is one of the best ever made, Metal Gear Solid, as well.
Where are these games at: Halo, Doom, Dark Souls, Elden Ring, Oblivion, Skyrim, PUBG, Bad Company 2, Borderlands 2
PUBG was A tier to me. The rest S, thought I haven’t played bad company 2 or Borderlands 2, but they seem to be up there
I can see BL2, but the rest of them games are meh
Except Halo. Halo's good
@@johnnythewalrus Halo is definitely S. I would put Elden Ring as S, Oblivion also. Skyrim was very good but maybe A+
Wow, LoL etc
I would just like to thank the editing team for the laughs I had while repeatedly watching Andrew say “Stick” and “Bob” and “Brick” and “Rod” as well as using a Goldeneye clip of someone being shot on the crotch. 😂
God of War- S
Sims-A

Half-Life - A
GTA- D
Gears of War- S
Super Mario 64-B

Games left off the list:

SimCity 2000
Dune 2000
Command & Conquer
Klaven: likes God of War
Also Klaven: "I hate playing bad guys."
What?
Also, thinks Kratos is Ares.
One is based in Greek mythology and one is based in reality
Kratos is an anti-hero. The gods are the bad guys. Educate yourself.
@@greygorygaming Do you think education would make me believe that "I needed a weight and he was there" is a good reason to burn someone alive? Kratos kills innocent people for no reason, without a second thought. I dunno where you got your morality from, but where I come from people who do that are villains, even if bigger villains exist elsewhere.
@@greygorygaming Anti-heroes usually fall into the "bad guy" category. That's why they're called "anti" heroes.
You're confusing "anti-hero" with "protagonist" and "bad guy" with "antagonist".
Educate yourself.
Metal gear solid Klavan....
I will never watch a Klavan video game review without requesting that Klavan play Hellblade
Red Dead Redemption 2. The greatest story in video games and one of, if not the best game of all time.
Who put this list together? There’s so many superb games missing: The Witcher 3, the Red Dead Redemption games, Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2, Half-Life 2, Portal 2, Disco: Elysium, the Mass Effect trilogy, Undertale, Earthbound, Chrono Trigger, Metal Gear Solid 1-3, most SOULSBORNE games, Sekiro, Elden Ring, Silent Hill 2, and so much more.
I haven’t played all of the games you listed, but Chrono Trigger is a certified banger and arguably the best soundtrack in gaming.
If a list of all-time great games doesn't have Portal 2, The Stanley Parable, or Zelda 3, the list is incomplete. I have half an argument for Pokemon 2 and for Paper Mario, but it's slightly different for RPGs, IMO.
@@461weavile I don't know a lot about the Pokemon or Paper Mario games but I do know some of them are very loved so I am interested in checking them out some day.
@AK-tw7uq Some of the best ones are hard to get right now. The one I would recommend is always extremely expensive; it's currently nearly $250 on amazon. There might be a better choice in the future, but instead of breaking the bank, I currently recommend buying Pokemon Sun or Pokemon Moon for the 3DS. (Edit: to be clear, my second choice is currently discontinued, so this is actually my third choice, but it's a really strong third choice; I bought four copies, and two additional systems, one copy for myself and three more to give as gifts after trying it.)
Undertale...
Making the last of us B tier is criminal. It is one of the best drama acting i have ever seen in any video games ever. Part 2 was crap, i agree but part 1 was dayum awesome. Try metal gear and witcher 3. You will love those.
Did he really put COD over Zelda?
He hates Zelda
I would
he hates open world games
Preferences
"I love puzzle games"
"I dont like Legend of Zelda"
Whut
Andrew you should play Battlefield 1 great ww1 game with an epic soundtrack the only down side is that you can play as Greece and Bulgaria
Mario 64, Mario Bros 3, Perfect Dark, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe with all dlc. Maybe throw in one rpg-ish style game like Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door.
My personal top 5 (I have a bit of a Nintendo bias so keep that in mind)
1.) Mother (FC)
2.) Mega Man V (Gameboy)
3.) Donkey Kong Country (SNES)
4.) Fatal Labyrinth (Genesis)
5.) Tie between Final Fantasy 1 (NES) and Smash Melee (Gamecube)
Ratchet & Clank 2: Going Commando
Still to this day one of the funniest games I ever played. Outstanding gameplay, outstanding creativity. Almost a perfect game. Up there in S+ tier along with God of War
Halo 2 is the greatest game of all time.
This is objective btw, so don’t bother arguing.
Finally someone speaks the truth
1. Megamania
2. Galaga
3. Robotron 2084
4. Wizard of War
5. Kangaroo
6. Berzerk
7. Demons to Diamonds
8. Dig Dug
9. BurgerTime
10. Centipede
I thought Klaven was old?
Is Andrew a gamer? This is so weird to watch him actually know these games and talk like he is losing sleep every night grinding video games. This was mind blowing.
Bioshock is the goat imo
No RDR2, no Witcher 3, no Half Life 2. What kinda "greatest games" ranking is this?
Skyrim????
the list should be all _Zelda_ and _Donkey Kong Country…_ maybe some _Resident Evil_ or _Metal Gear Solid._
Klavan is a man of culture and sees that video games can purvey art. Love ya!
It’s good, great even. But many entries do come off as baby games for babies so I can see why some may not like them.
I like them though
I think OoT is overrated, but I would argue with Klavan. The guy talks about Zelda like someone who just got into gaming circa GameCube and just parroted the "animation" complaint like that was the whole of the series.
@@SweetestsadistI’d agree with you OoT is super overrated
I wouldn't say it's overrated (although it's not my favourite personally). I mean, it's basically the blueprint for so many games just in terms of gameplay mechanics. Target lock on, context sensitive buttons etc. The story and adventure for the time just blew people away.
@@JudoP_slinging Overrated by no means makes it a bad game. But so many call it the greatest game when it is not even the best Zelda game.
If Klavan was scared by Resident Evil, I wonder how he'd feel if he played Silent Hill 2.
There are a lot of differences between Diablo 1 and Diablo 2, but the difference that makes D1 unplayable today is not the graphics, it's not the cinematic, it's not the story, it's that you WALK SO SLOW, D2 introduced running and nobody could ever go back
Zelda take is awful man 😂 such a great game
The Sims (4) has become infected and certain man-made chest scars were added, Jen Dur stuff and they are about to add polyamory. This is a game played by millions of young children! I hope parents are aware of this.
Did I miss the award winning MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV? Somehow I didn’t hear any final fantasy on that list. I’ve been a gamer since I had to sit in the laundromat in the 80’s playing centipede while my mom washed the clothes, and there are no games I love quite as much as the final fantasy series, especially XIV.
-10 points for putting Zelda at B
+50 points for saying SMB3 is the better than SM64, but still recognizing that SM64 is an amazing game (my personal fave is SMW, but whatever)
My Top 10 Games From The Games I have Played till date,There are Many Games which I haven't Played so this list can be different after few years.
Assassin's Creed 2
X Men Origins Wolverine
Days Gone
Far Cry 4
The Evil Within 2
Alan Wake
Portal 2
Dying Light
Prototype
Batman Arkham Knight
Mario 64, NHL 94, Tecmo Bowl, Mortal Kombat 2
People loved Goldeneye not so much for the story mode but because of the multiplayer mode. It was almost endless fun for my brothers and me as kids, more so for my brothers who were older and better. Almost endless because then Super Smash Brothers came out and that was THE game until we grew up.
I would probably add Elden Ring and / or the first Dark Souls to this list. For a lot of years, I never understood the appeal of these kinds of games. Then I picked up Elden Ring, which let me to the original Souls trilogy. And it well and truly enthralled me.
Fallout: New Vegas, Planescape: Torment and Disco Elysium are up there for me from a narrative perspective
Devil May Cry 3 is one of the few, if not the only game I finished, in all its difficulties. I never got bored of it. I highly recommend the Onimusha games if you are a fan of DMC and Resident Evil and like Japanese mythology and samurai combat.
Yooooooo whatttt???? Klavan is a gamer????
Klavan’s analysis is quite good as long as you don’t include the RPG genre. Even though he’s a novelist, he really doesn’t like or appreciate the RPG genre (his opinion is it’s too story driven, has too many cut scenes, and isn’t action oriented).
Stop overthinking it internet. Tetris, Goldeneye, and GTA 3 (maybe San Andreas!!!)
I want to put Street Fighter 2 in there but the fighting game genre is only a little less niche than those damn Madden players.
Sid Meier’s Civilization should’ve been on the list. Points taken off for level of addictiveness.
The fact that Andrew Klavan has played ICO shocks me. What a game.
Realms the haunting, the last game to give me a genuine jump scare.
Damn near fell out my seat.
I know it’s still less than a year old, but it did just win 2023 game of the year…
it’s Baldur’s Gate 3. Some people think it is the best game of the decade. I love it.
7:36 I think you mean SUPA MARIO BRUDDAS 2 BABYYYYY
ITS STILL DA KING!
Seeing a Dunkey reference here makes me happy.
Knack is better.
@@Sweetestsadist Gex is better, actually.
WHERE IS MASS EFFECT?!1?
Klavan saying Ico is “maybe the best game ever made” was validating (not that I care about being validated) on a surreal level. It may make up for his disregard for Zelda.
I played more computer games than console games, so my list would include none of those on the list. Rather, I would include games like ...
-- Fallout: New Vegas
-- Elder Scrolls: Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim
-- Mass Effect series
-- Baldur's Gate series
-- MMOs like World of Warcraft and Everquest
-- Warcraft 3
-- Civilization II --- all the games in this series were great, but II was the one that I got addicted to the most.
-- Syberia and Syberia II (awesome games nobody has ever heard of)
-- The Longest Journey
-- and going wayyyy back ..... Space Quest the series
Mgs
Mgs sons of liberty
Mgs snake eater
Warriors
Rdr 1&2
Elder scrolls; morrowind, oblivion, Skyrim
Fallout 3
Prince of persia sands of time
Eternal darkness
Conquers bad fur day

Man, when Klavan talks games, I both clap with applause and cringe in disgust. On one hand, he gives shoutouts to games like Ico. On the other hand, he hates Zelda. And did he get confused between OOT and BotW? Also, he hates playing as bad guys and likes old Kratos?? Uh, what?
I’m fine with his opinions. Even if I don’t agree it’s refreshing just seeing a guy not bothered to like something just because it’s generally considered great
Being a real life criminal is a lot different from being a fallen god hack and slashing other mythological characters
Doom
Civilization
Myst
X-Com
Dwarf Fortress
Zork
This is why Klavan is the best DW host. Also, the fact that the stands for what is true regardless of the detractors.
Okay, I like Zelda, but I’m not gonna seethe and foam at the mouth when someone says they don’t like Zelda.
Fantasy Adventure games aren’t for everyone.
Who knew?? Andrew Klavan plays video games??? The high-cultured genius?? Just...Wow!
I’d love to see Klaven give Earthbound a try. Still my all-time favorite.
There is no cow level.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is a must play. Somebody make him play it all the way through.
How could Skyrim not be on this list.. if you can put in hundreds, or even thousands of hours on a game and not fully complete it then it belongs among the tippy toppiest of tiers.
Granted, I've been gaming since the mid 80s, but I would have picked Link to the Past over Ocarina of Time. Half Life is an S tier. RE 4 S tier. Last of Us, S tier. And Curse of Monkey Island is the best MI game.
I know I can't be the only one who wants Klavan to do a gaming series
Witcher 3….
Didn’t know Klavan played games at all. Impressed.
Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Space Invaders, Dragon’s Lair, Star Wars, Asteroids, Mr. Do, Zork, and countless others. The internet craps on history older than yesterday.
