Just another tip that works for me when I feel I'm getting around it more than I want, I accentuate putting the weight of the ball on my pointer finger in my push away.
right and this is how i hurt my index finger lol
i learned how to bowl a little over a year ago and bowl in two casual leagues a week (i'm not that good, averaging 140-150 for a 21 year old guy). the kicker is that I'm 100% self taught, and accidentally taught myself how to throw a back-up ball, which i didn't know at the time. it felt natural to twist my wrist clockwise to get that left-to-right spin, as a righty. but after some research, i learned that back up bowlers are inconsistent, and it's an overall tough way to learn how to bowl. anyways, ill stop rambling to say that these vids really help me re-learn bowling in a way, to bowl more traditionally and consistently. everything from the approach, the rev, everything. it's basically a backwards version of what I taught myself, but watching these vids make it seem much more natural. feels weird, but ill be confident to throw a regular ball soon!
Literally me, but it's the only way I feel comfortable 😅
Being able to throw a back-up Ball is a real good tool though. It’s something not everyone can do. Hell Anthony Simonsen has done it for an entire Tournaments before, and on TV.
But obviously it’s not something he does all the time, just if the situation calls for it. You definitely should learn how to Bowl regularly. And when you get good enough, having that extra tool in your arsenal will just be an extra plus. 👍
If you average 140 you shouldn’t bowl in a league let alone 2 leagues…bozo
@@totalnv16 yeah you’re right, I shouldn’t bowl in 2 mixed, casual handicap sanctioned leagues, one on a family team and the other with my boys. But fr, imagine gatekeeping bowling? Must be a sad, sad life.
Dennis OMG! I went to middle, high school, and college with him. Good to see he’s doing well (:
Hey guys, I woke up this morning, watched this video, then went to league and, using this info, won the pot for the first time ever. So stoked! Great tip about splitting the ball. I never had such a consistent hook like that!
I got a 2nd ball and went from a 14lb Ocean Vibe to a 12lb Atomic but then realized that the steps you guys showed eliminates the need for feeling like I was carrying a ball that was too heavy. I think the proper drop and momentum on the takeaway and having the fingers in the right position takes away the feeling of the ball being too heavy and also having a heavier ball means you have more mass to help knock down the pins if thrown and released properly down the lane.
B&K have had some good videos in the past but this one is probably the all time best…..great tip. I’ve been trying to solve this problem for years! Thank you!!!
Very good video.. This lesson should help the young bowlers and us seniors as well.. I appreciate what you’re doing for our sport of bowling…
Good video Kyle and Dennis. It's been a minute since we have seen him in front of the camera. Great tip! There are definitely a lot of moving parts for proper bowling. Anyone can bowl, but it takes that little extra to be that person who bowls well.
Great lesson! I'm constantly challenged to keep my hand behind the ball as long as possible. I tend to lose it towards the bottom of my downswing. There's something in my mind that says "The ball won't hook unless you help it," and I end up on the side of the ball before the ball is even at my shoe. Or, worse, I release it too early and it just thuds onto the lane with no revs. I needed this today.
Everyone but a small percentage of super strong wristed people will lose it at the bottom of the swing. It’s unavoidable.
Yes, this is where they need to have another lesson
This is exactly my problem. Really appreciate the fixing the problem part by part.
And it starts with having a good starting position, everything dominoes off that and it's hard to correct an issue midswing that probably stemmed from starting position or push away. Much easier to try to adjust your starting position, to put your body in a better spot to correct or a least minimize, the issue...whatever issue that may be
Y’all are always posting the most helpful tips! Keep being amazing
Great video and great lessons. I am left-handed, and one habit that I just noticed with my game is that I am rotating my hand or wrist over the top of the ball at the point of release. I am not chicken winging it. I just need to stay behind the ball little bit longer.
I’m a lefty as well and I always felt like I had to twist my wrist to get my ball to spin. I could never hook my ball. It just glided into the pocket (1,3).
Same here as a lefty I do it as well!
Lol so funny . I just spent a 5 game block practicing this exact drill yesterday . It really does help for a guy with 350 Rev rate .
Hello Gentlemen and thank you.
This was a great tip at the right time. Been struggling and after watching this I was able to release the ball in a better hand position last night at league.
I instantly felt like the ball was doing what I wanted instead of rolling out too soon and hitting the pins with no power.
This helped me get the ball further down the lane and stored more power until the ball took over and turned hard into the pins.
Tell Coach Daniel hello!!
Awesome. I’m re-learning how to bowl. Things have changed in the last 40 years.
Kyle, for bowlers with weak wrist like me, its impossible to cup the ball. My wrist breaks but I maintain my wrist behind and at the center of the ball.
Awesome job helping people to improve their game and supporting the sport., best of luck on the incoming season, we need to see you both on TV matches…God Bless 🙏🏻
I absolutely feel like my fingers are not under the ball. This tip helped me to visualize what I shoulf be doing.
Not to mention that the editing was so GREAT!
This happened to me last week started with a 128 then fixed the problem and threw back to back 220’s
Good job
Gonna try this at my next week off bowling to get increased and more consistent rev rate!
I was just finding out why I was doing same tuning. I found that starting my hand in a weaker position actually puts in a stronger position at the foul line
Great video on a topic that’s so common and something I do a ton myself. Anyone else have issues wondering if a ball change is a good idea or not?
I used to have a similar issue. I wrongly thought this was the best way to add more revs. I cured this with a tip you gave in another video. While I hold the ball in my hand in my initial stance, I rotate it inward slightly. This help me to stay behind the ball and increase my rate. If you could expand on that tip, I think it would help a lot of people as well.
Wouldn’t one rotate outward so you don’t get on the side right off the bat ? Just trying to understand as I have that problem.
Love watching your videos!! I wish I lived close by and get a lesson on proper release. I watch so many you tube videos not sure which way is best.
This is the content I’m loving!! 🥰 I love your how to bowl better videos! They’re so helpful! Also love you guys just bowling and showing the life in the PBA such great creators!
I used to spin it like most amateur bowlers but i practiced my ass off. Focusing on the feeling of having my arm behind the ball for several months. Now its second nature but whenever i have an issue i just concentrate on my arm when im throwing a shot. Ill almost always be dead behind it. The hardest issue is maintaining proper tilt
Love seeing you guy grow as coaches. Keep it up! Teach him the quiet bowling shoulder. It has done wonders for me since I referenced your video a couple weeks ago! I don’t pull the ball as much and the the ball reacts great on the lane!
I am glad I’m watching this video again because my problem is I always tend to sometimes curb it too much to my left and into the gutter. Also, my biggest problem is to get more power/rev rate, is that finishing motion when you put your arm up as you are releasing the bowling ball. I can never ever get my arm up, especially when releasing the ball if you can help me unlock that would be amazing thank you so much. Take care guys.
Hello gentlemen and thank you so much for a great video Kyle and Dennis. I've been bowling in leagues for years, and right now I'm in 6 leagues, I'm a 64 yr old female! All my leagues have different averages because I couldn't figure out exactly what I needed to do to keep getting the great scores that I get on some of my leagues, but watching your video I realized what I was doing wrong. I watch some of my other bowlers to see how they handle their bowling balls, and if I try to replicate them, well, sometimes it goes great and others it doesn't, and by the way, yes I have a hook ball, 3 of them. I have a Phaze 2, an Eternity and a Cyclone to which they are all great balls. I'm just having the worst ti,e ever picking up my ten pen when I used to use my Eternity as my pickup ball, and never missed. But now it's like I may get 3 out of 8 and I'm not happy with that. I'm definitely going to use the tips in your video. Again, thank you for showing an old lady how to let the ball roll off your hand instead of trying to make it hook...
You guys have helped my game so much ! Best of luck in 24!!
I still have these issues, especially staying under the ball. I have a tendency to be on the side of the ball at release. These were some very helpful tips that I will be thinking about next time I practice.
I enjoy watching your videos. Just trying to apply the tips doesn’t seem work to well since I am a no-thumb bowler. Possibly do a video with a no-thumb bowler to give some tips and tricks on timing, release, accuracy. which I feel accuracy is probably my biggest issue.
I love the explanation of splitting the ball with your forearm. It's a better visual to use. I thank you for the tip. My timing was screwed up for months. It was a push away issue. I'm back on track now. Thanks.
These videos are great. Would love one where you go over a bunch of bowling terms. It would be helpful for us less skilled bowlers.
Just moved to a finger-tip ball and these videos are hugely helpful. Thank you guys for posting them.
Great video
I like the timing tips
Dennis, you are almost there, I've seen your swing improve greatly. That short clip right at the end as if we're watching you bowl from the lane to the right of you, your arm stayed straight the whole swing. That last part about being below the equator at the bottom of your swing, when your ball reaches it's peak in the backswing, start dropping the ball and bend your elbow just a little right before the ball is at hip level and then straighten your arm back out as you release and remember to try to make your arm move faster going from beside slide foot to finish, than it moved the rest of the swing. Norm Duke called it, accelerating through the release. But that slight elbow bend will help you stay below the equator, all the way to the point of release. It'll make it easier to be "under" the ball or "behind" the ball instead of being on top of the ball
Hmmm. Novice but not a new bowler, I recently got a ball recently and having a hard time. I understand what you're saying, but in trying to "get under the ball" I've been sort of curling the ball (bending from the elbow) and it causes a strain in the bicep. Wouldn't it be a better way to bend your wrist instead and keep your arm straight?
Shared this with my sophomore bowler! I think it's challenging for girls because their hands are smaller and it's physically harder to support the weight of a 14# ball on fingers. We work on strength exercises specifically for the hand and arm so she can position better.
Major problems for me & has always been. Looking forward to changing my focus in this way to see if it helps!
Thanks Kyle & Dennis .
Great tips! Especially, the timing step to get to the right position at release. This is something I struggle with and is becoming a physical queue to prevent myself from having too high of a backswing.
Thank you guys for everything you do. 😊💯👍🍻
great lesson, I hope to use it Monday on my league.
Yessssiiirrrr 🤙🏿 I needed that tip this explains my 7 pin stand imma have to practice this & post it on my Channel shout-out to Kyle for the hand gesture.
I'm a 67 year old 'beginner' bowler. Thank you for creating wonderfully informative video!
Just learning to bowl with a curve. Love the vibe of the videos. I’m trying this tonight!
Great tip I struggle a lot with these 3 exact problems
Thanks for these great tips. From one of your earlier videos I thought that when you release the ball that your hand should be directly behind it. I was under the impression that you were supposed to pull Thum out first and allow your fingers to flip the ball forward. I watched Dennis with great detail, and I saw that when he released the ball, his hand was on the side of it. Which is the correct method?
Great stuff guys… I’m fighting 2 of these problems right now. Thanks for the info.
Love these simple straight forward lessons for beginners like me 😎
Great video! Definitely a tip I can work on in my practice session.
You nailed everything I've been working on already.so this was a big boost for my confidence
If your swing is even a little late it’s so hard to keep fingers below ball. Loved watching Del Ballard and Holman with early timing.
One of my biggest issues is timing. I take a 6 step approach due to a broken ankle in 2013 and taking 7 years off bowling (2015-2022). I have been grinding and working on a lot but one thing I keep noticing constantly is my timing is way off at times. Also transition I am having trouble with and trouble seeing it ahead of time and being able to make the ball change as needed and not too late. I have a habit of just wanting to adjust my mark/feet instead of realizing I need to get out of the ball. These are two major issues for me I need to work on and I hope I can get the membership after the beginning of the year and hope to come to your guys clinics as well.
Great video, I like the instructional content not during the tour season or helps me a lot
love this tip!!! I have been taught "FF' = Forearm Forward!!
Thank you for that great lesson. I'm going to try to use it along with the lesson about the balance arm. Maybe it will help me enough to be able save the money that I was going to spend on training to invest in purchasing my first home. I really appreciate all of the videos that the two of you post. Have an amazing day
Love your videos and your channel keep up the amazing work you guys do
I find that if I control my elbow, it takes care of the forearm. I focus on keeping my elbow tight to my body and inside the ball and don't really think about the hand/forearm.
Kyle. Congratulations on your 3rd round draft pick into the 2024 PBA League season. You definitely deserve it. I am in New Jersey rooting for you guys! Go get'em!!!
I would love to hear more about the proper down swing. Is coming down inside your swing line initiated by shoulders, leading with inside of your palm? And how do you time the down swing, elbow bend and release all together.
Love these vids! one prob i have is trying to become comfortable with sliding. Im a planter when i bowl. Im not sure if this is a bad thing or not, but a lot of people tell me both ways.
Very helpful for me as someone just learning to hook a reactive ball. Would be helpful to have the overall footwork covered as well and I'm guessing you already did a video for that.
Hello Kyle,
What about the elbow bend and straightening? That seems to be the most important way to generate rev rate.
Right on time! I needed this reminder!
Great lesson, Kyle.
Good video ! I tried to avoid the chicken wing swing . Can you give any advices on how should the position of the shoulders be at the release of the ball ? I noticed that if I keep my shoulders straight up instead of tilting over the release , I get more leverage of rolling the ball on the lanes . Any thoughts on the position of the shoulders be at ? Thank you .
Been a long-time viewer of your content as well as many other bowlers on UA-cam. I loved a lot of your tips and tricks videos to improve my game. It has helped me a lot with starting to fine-tune my game. So much so that on this past week of league I shot my first 299. I sadly choked on the 12th shot and left a solid 10-pin. What tips do you have for someone in my situation?
Dennis is a good "test" subject. Thanks for the tips!
The drop step Kyle forgot to mention in this case was for a 4 step approach. Sometimes on a 5, if timing is an issue. 3 steps is in a transition move.
Love your videos!! Jealous! I wish I could get coaching you’re soooo lucky Dennis!!
thank you so much , i feel better after see ur video.
Lol, everytime I see one of your videos, It's like you guys know what I'm having trouble with. 😅😅😂. Great video.
This technique really works. There are some things you need to do to make it work.
1. You need to have your ball drilled or beveled so you can get out of cleanly it in that position. The ball may hang on your hand forcing you to over-rotate it.
2. Take videos so you can see you are doing it correctly. It does not feel like it looks.
Really liked the video very informative
Cool video talk tech bowling bowling
GREAT TIPS!!!!
Does a big back swing create more power and rev rate?
Thank you
Good insight 👍🏼
You guys should put a video up of a full game with him and all your tips!
Great info!!
I had a Marshall Holman VHS growing up, I think his trick was “lead with ring finger” to mitigate chicken wing.
Really helped.
Zen Soul!!!! Love mine! But it needs a resurface...
Great tips.
gonna try these at league..sounds like where my problems are
Haha yup been doing the side thing for a long time. Guess it's time to work on it :)
Good stuff thanks
Great video
Those were some great tips! But how do I stop myself from gripping the ball with my thumb on my back swing? Cuz I tend to get bowlers thumb and a lot of soreness due to this bad habit!
In taking a lesson, the coach told me to uncock to the point of breaking my wrist at address.
I didn’t think to ask why or what that would accomplish but maybe it was similar to what this guy was doing ? I know at times when I first drop the ball into the swing my thumb goes down & I get on the side.
i been have an issue to stay underneath the ball thanks for the tip. any tips of walking straight i been having an issue of drifting left
Nice corrections Dennis. Add Taking faster steps to use your legs to create way more power from the momentum and those little pesky pins will drop
Kyle, I took a lesson from a USBC Silver certified coach a few years back & he had me break/uncock my wrist at address. Why would he advise that ? I am left handed & get on the side a fair amount.
Thanks
No cheese 😅😂😂 great vid, thanks for the tips fellas ✌️
Please explain where to stand . forwards or behind the dot's
Quick question, sometimes when I get under the ball and actually unload. I for some reason just can not keep it going to the right on line.
Does anyone have a video on how to get steps for the approach set up to make sure you are close to the foul line in real release? I always seem to be 2-3 feet from the foul line on release even if I move up 2-4 feet on the approach
There may be some around on UA-cam, but i believe that issue just takes you going to the center and practicing just that. It seems like you may have a fear of fouling that you have to overcome. Hope this helps.
Most people say stand at the foul line with your back to the lanes and take 4-5 normal size steps forward. I (2H) adjust my approach from about a quarter step in front of the second set of dots all the way up to in front of the 2nd set of dots. I use a 5 step approach and my step length is adjusted based on how close I am to the approach.
I would like to get out of a full roller to a new solid release staying under the ball with proper pin placement not at 7:30 please help
