always liked your underwater videos to give some context for what the bottom looks like down there on a drop like this. they might be able to see a little but for us it's basically pitch black. it's like a different world
Nice work John! We were out there as well and noticed the same 'silted' up look of the Ocean and also had better success in the clearer waters (Cartright).. We were a bit more Sea Bass focused and limited on them, but shifted to Fluke and only ended with four keepers to 22". With the cooler water thought we might even bump into a Cod...no luck. Definitely a beautiful day on the water. On a side note, we never caught a single Porgy all day...strange when a few of the guys fishing with me were using squid and peanut bunker most of the day. First day I can ever remember at Montauk without a single Porgy harassing us.
Good to see them elsewhere besides Long Island sound lol, I was out surf fishing Saturday morning looking for bass on the south shore, went biteless 130am to about 6 and by than the sun was well up so I switched to fluke fishing and 20 mins later got my pb from the surf at 25.5” and 6.6 lbs , I kept fishing for another hour and a half but the wind started picking up quick and just killed all the current I had so I finally threw in the towel, a lot of hours for one bite but at least it was a decent fish when that one bit came lol
Bass bite north jersey surf slow also and fluke decent. I decided to take fluking more seriously, 7' rod hi lo rig with 6"gulp grub & 4"mullet & 2oz sinker. Or bucktail & mullet teaser. After 2 whole days only 1 short. Could you please elaborate on what you said about wind and current effect and please any tips greatly appreciated. Wind has been shifty but mostly se or sw with waves always moving nw. Thank you
Fluke much like bass like moving water, they sit on the bottom behind a piece of structure(drop offs in the sand, rocks, ledges) and out of the current and wait for the water to push baitfish over them and than pop out for an easy meal, while the current is moving at a good pace the fishing is the best, too fast and the bite slows, too slow and the bite slows and the right pace tends to b different for every spot lol. What I was saying in the original comment was that the wind blowing the opposite direction the current was running and the current slowed down too much to b productive anymore (wind against tide slows it down, wind with tide speeds it up) My advice would b to shrink the profile of the gulps ur using, biggest I tend to use from shore is 4” grubs, I’ll do a 3-4” mullet top hook and a 4” grub bottom, if I notice one is doing better than the other I’ll switch to that one for both, also if fishing ocean beach or back bays the 4” gulp shrimp can do great. I prefer plain jigheads to bucktails on bottom from shore just cuz if I snag it on something I feel slightly less bad about losing it lol, also try slightly lighter weight so it pushes in the water more naturally, I typically use 3/4-1oz jigheads, if the water is really pushing and I can’t find bottom I switch to a 1 oz sinker with a single dropper loop about 8-12” above with 1 hook and gulp, if u still can’t feel bottom than go heavier but I’d start light and slowly increase the weight
I have an 87” Terrova (manual deploy) on the bow of my Parker. One day I’ll be taking a swim… the southerly winds are killing us here in Jersey too. Water in mid 50s surface temp.
Hey john I've got 1 for ya. I moved from the east coast to California recently, so now im targeting halibut instead of fluke. Would you still stick with your bucktail jigs to target halibut on the west coast? My brain is telling me to try it, since the fish seem to act the same. Thanks! Ive got a few of your work!
I'm in South Jersey. I've tried salmon red and blue fuze and it wasn't as good as regular white. I wonder if there's a difference in the bait from the Atlantic City area to Skinner's area.
@@andrewgaroh9538 every so often chartreuse works better than white. We usually have 3 people on the boat so one of us starts with one chartreuse gulp on
Hey Skinnee- Noticed on the boat the new engines have a orange piece on the connector for flushing? Is that something aftermarket he put on to make it easier? Or is that a new thing Yamaha did? We have outboards of the new versions from 6 months ago and we have triples so it’s difficult to get a hose connected on the inside one and not loose the gasket? If you could shed some light I’d appreciate it!
Off topic question John, just wondering if you have ever/if not have the urge to go tuna fishing or any of the other species offshore. Or even sharking, just curious about your takes on that
Dont throw those ling back great eating fish fried fresh they are fantastic actually like them better then fluke have done trips to the west specifically for them👍
What’s the water temperature? Here in Jersey the constant south wind has us in mid/upper 50’s to low/mid sixties depending on the tide…. Putting keepers in the cooler to warm up!
When we first shut down the current was so strong (2.7-3mph) it didn't make sense to stay there. Then we had around 1.3mph, which was OK. That also went up to 1.8 and had us scoping. Had we stayed there we would have used the motor. Instead we moved back to the original spot because of the tide change. Perfect drift there the rest of the trip.
John long time follower … been tying my own bucktails, having difficulty finding natural hair. What’s your opinion on synthetic hair on a bucktail? Tying bucktails ranging from 3 to 6 ounces. Thanks Tom
Year of the wind. Never saw wind like this almost everyday it seems.
Nice to see Montauk is gonna start to heat up! great looking rig you guys were on.

Hopefully that water clears and warms up soon!
All I’m gonna say is that’s a normal for flounder fishing down here off of Delaware and ocean city, 8-12oz sinkers, flounder love that current!

Great beach fluke!
Great video, did the current play a role in knowing how big the fish was and what kind of?
I think the cold water depressed the fight of the biggest one.
How often do you utilize a drift sock? Do you ever use one on your boat? With the current and wind in LIS it’s often hard to stay on bottom.
I have one for my boat that I use sometimes, but not as much since getting a trolling motor.
I have an 87” Terrova (manual deploy) on the bow of my Parker. One day I’ll be taking a swim… the southerly winds are killing us here in Jersey too. Water in mid 50s surface temp.
Wow that's cold!
how heavy are the bucktails
Another excellent video. Perhaps, during a doldrum period, you could describe the differences, if any, of inshore versus offshore fluke fishing.
The difference for Skinner is the weight of the bucktail and the stiffness of the rod.
Best fisherman 🎉
John, have you tried fluke spoons for those high-speed drift conditions? They work quite well.
The wind this year is terrible, every day it’s borderline too windy to go, conditions are terrible
Hi John. How deep is the water?
60-90'

Absolutely! I've had many positive reports on fishing California Halibut exactly as we fish for fluke - bucktail and teaser and Gulp.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing perfect thank you!
What was the size of the big one you caught ?
hi john, how do you decide your color gulp when fishing in the ocean for fluke? any certain specifics?
I like salmon red in the ocean, although it's never impressed me elsewhere. Besides that I want glow white and blue fuze.

How do you cook your catch?
Dip in egg, roll in panko bread crumbs, fry in peanut oil.

Nothing against offshore, except that it's something I don't have the means to do on my own. Plus I'm so busy with the other stuff.

Why didn’t u Use the trolling motor to slow the drift ?
My thought as well. I assumed early on they didn’t have one when they used a drift sock.

You looked like you were ready for a night out on the town in the intro lol. Not a bad look.
All of this wind gave me time to go to the barber shop!

Do you lose a lot of fluke if you don't use a net?
The bigger ones definitely are more prone to shaking off when you swing them.
wish we had it like this in NJ right now 😂
Great viedo
Nice fish
Hi, John, excellent content as always. Any similarity on sonar - did you see bait balls of sand eels similar to LI?
We don't have sandeels here like in the Sound.

Synthetic hair is absolutely fine for fluke. I'm not sold on it for bass.
Thanks .. what size swing hook are you using on jigs .. 3-6 oz ?
5/0 and 6/0 depending on hook model.
keep a pair of good snippers in your car and cut tails off roadkill deer. Any good tackle shop that has fly fishing gear will sell deer tails as well.
These regulations are terrible 😢
Fluke are doing terrible in general in the last 4,5 years. Overfishing and keeping large females has caught up
plenty of fluke in the north east.
Where are these spots?😊
