Each and every one of P.G. Wodehouse's novels is a joy to read but especially in the Blandings Castle series the sun is forever shining down on the eccentric Lord Emsworth's stately pile. Confusions and misunderstandings often abound but the wonderful array of characters (not least the Earl's prize winning pig aka The Empress Of Blandings) never fail to leave the reader with a smile broad enough to last all Summer long!
Thank you for this. P. G. Wodehouse is one of those writers I've always wanted to read, and somehow never got round to - I really must! Definitely would make great holiday reads 🙂
Thank you for this really interesting vlog. I also studied 18th century literature for my degree. I love Tilly. She reminds ne of a Yorkie I used to have. 😊❤
The first line of Little Women is..."Christmas won't be Christmas without any presents" grumbled Jo, lying on the rug". Not the most Summer-y of openings but nevertheless a delight to read at any time of the year!
Thank you for these recommendations. I have more to add to my TBR list. This is such a nice variety. I always have a paper and pencil ready when I watch your videos. Hello to sweet Tillie.
I have that same copy of Little Women acquired maybe a decade ago in antiquarian bookshop. My childhood copy much smaller, plastic coated. While visiting Concord in winter, we peered into Alcott House, abashed it was Closed for the Season. A face met our startled ones. The caregiver allowed us in when told my guest was from England! Wasn' t that nice! Decades ago.
Lovely to know that someone out there has the same copy of Little Women! What a lovely person to allow you into the house - the same sort of kindness expressed by Louisa May Alcott through the March sisters 🙂
Thanks Rosamunde! I watched this one a bit late but of course got some great ideas! By coincidence I started reading Emma a few weeks ago for a rest from mysteries & Annie Proulx! 😊 Many of your suggestions are on my TBR, esp. Cold Comfort Farm & Crandford. I’ve read Little Women 🥰 & Robinson Crusoe (in grad school; not a fav…). Just ordered Under the Greenwood Tree. Thanks again!! 😊
Thank you Rosamunde - I took a couple of suggestions from your book list and will pick them up at my library. I thought “Under the Greenwood Tree” and “Three Men in a Boat” might be good summer reads. 📕
Thank you so much for this video Rosamunde! I haven't read all of these books so I will have to add some of them to my ever growing TBR pile!😀 Tilly's haircut looks great! She is as cute as ever!🥰 Oh and I love your earrings! They look lovely! Hope to see a new video again soon!
Serendipitously, I was thinking about both Cold Comfort Farm and Three Men in a Boat just last night. The reason being is I'm re-reading The Wind in the Willows (another excellent summer read) and the boat scene with Ratty and Mole made me think of Three Men. Then I recollected that I'd listened to a Kenneth Williams (Matron!) narration of Wind in the Willows as well as his narration of Cold Comfort Far. I've also read both books and loved them. They are both so funny. You've compiled an excellent list and Tilly's haircut is lovely.
Thank you for your wonderful holiday reading choices Rosamunde. I must get Three Men in a Boat and Cold Comfort Farm and perhaps Thomas Hardy‘s Under the Greenwood Tree.
Hi, Rosamunde, thank you for sharing! I always loved DADDY LONG LEGS. Do you know, there’s a second book? Her girl becomes the leader of the orphanage… Same with LITTLE WOMEN! I ordered THE COMFORT FARM as an e book, some fun for the summer in the garden… Your old editions of the books are lovely. I’ve to watch your video again to take some notes… wish you a wonderful summer, and, I’m curious: what do YOU plan to read this summer ? Love from Germany, Monika❣
I did not know there was a sequel to DLL! I think my reading this summer is a bit of a mix of light summer reads with a sprinkling of something more meaty! Stay tuned for the reviews 🙂
I have the 1966 copy of Daddy Long-Legs. I saw the movie in my teens and loved it. I have yet to read the book, but now it's on my mind, and I may get to it soon.
Jerome K Jerome's follow-up to Three Men In A Boat was entitled Three Men On The Bummel! Somewhat surprisingly it failed to achieve anything like the success of it's predecessor!
Another wonderful video! Thanks Rosamunde! Tilly looks pretty smart in her new haircut. Must check out Daddy Long Legs and a couple others you mentioned. Always look forward to seeing a new video from you!
How about Summer by Albert Camus. I have the tiny Penguin copy perfect for traveling. His writing is beautiful. Eight lyrical essays drawing on Greek mythology reads back cover.
Thanks for sharing Tilly! She’s adorable!
Three Men in a Boat was a delightful read!
I love your old copy if Cranford.

@booksfrommybookshelf Start with "Something Fresh", the first Blandings novel and I suspect you will soon be addicted!

Tilly has the cutest face and she has just cheered me up.

Cranford is charming. It was one of my Mother's favorites and I inherited her 19 thC. Copy, always on my bedstand.

Thank you so much of sharing your vast knowledge.
Thankyou, great list, we are in winter, but will put them on my tbr list. Tilly made me smile with her cheeky face
Your older copies are just LOVELY! I really enjoyed Daddy Long Legs, too. These are wonderful ideas! I’ve read many and loooove them.
I laughed when you said not to read Jude The Obscure on the beach! You are so right. That book deeply affected me.

I love those connections! I'd also love to hear Kenneth Williams narrating Cold Comfort Farm!

I read Silas Marner recently and absolutely loved it. A great read!
Thank you for this selection!

Brilliant !!!! So much joy in this selection - my favourites definately The Hobbit (JRRT fanatic) and Cold Comfort Farm 😊

Thank you - I like the sound of that 🙂
I'm convinced that Tom Jones was a role model for the poet Robert Burns.
Sounds feasible!
