For lovers of books, old and new!
My name is Rosamunde Bott. I'm a writer, and like all writers I love books!
In this channel, I want to share some of the books from my bookshelf - sharing my memories of when I read them - or just reviewing the books I read, and discussing authors, whether it’s fiction, poetry or non-fiction. I’m also going to be giving you some themed book lists, selected from my book shelf.
So - if you love books and would like to share my - and your own memories of my book selections - then do subscribe and feel free to comment on my videos. I’ll always be happy to reply.
I will occasionally update you with information about my own works, past, present and upcoming. I write historical and multi-timeline historical novels, with themes of family history, and sometimes with a touch of the paranormal - and even time travel.

King certainly knows how to drive a narrative and keep you guessing... Here's my full review. Dickens' Chilling Ghost Story: The Signal-Man - Reading for Halloween
Переглядів 54121 день тому
The Signal-Man - Reading. For Halloween, I'm giving you my reading of Charles Dickens' short story, 'The Signal-Man' written in 1866. It was based on the Clayton Tunnel Crash of 1861, but also it was a year after Dickens was himself involved in the fatal Staplehurst rail crash in Kent. The story was originally published as one of his Christmas stories, but is definitely suitable for this time o...

Ten Books that Made Me... Me

This seems to be a theme on Booktube at present, so here is my take on 'Ten books that made me' - focusing on how the books I read before the age of 20 made me into the reader, writer and person I became. This was a really interesting exercise which gave me a deeper understanding of why I like the books I like, and the kind of books I like to write. I would encourage anyone to do the same! Get ...
Nick Hornby Book Review: "About a Boy"

Is "About a Boy" by Nick Hornby (1993) actually about a boy? I'm reviewing Hornby's novel, comparing it with the film, and discussing the themes and the writing: Why is Hornby so funny? So relatable? What is science fiction? And, to answer a recent question, what books classify as science fiction? Here, I'm taking a look at the definitions, history, sub-genres, books and authors of this popular genre - including the differences between science fiction and fantasy. Being 'Star Trek Day' on 8th September, it's also slightly topical... and logical. Get my FREE book here: www.rosamundebott.com/...
The Old Curiosity Shop: A Tale of Innocence and Corruption

Book Review alert! I've just finished reading Dickens' The Old Curiosity Shop for the second time, and I think it was worth the effort! Here's what I thought of it. Spoiler alert - there is a section where I talk about the ending (because it's one of those endings that are much discussed) - but I've given you a warning in the video and a place where you can skip to if you don't want to hear it....

Book Review: Making It So - Patrick Stewart's Autobiography
Переглядів 5953 місяці тому
It's book review time, and today's review is Sir Patrick Stewart's memoir, 'Making It So' (for those who don't watch Star Trek, this is a paraphrase of his catch phrase, 'Make It So'). This book tells the story of the man who came from very humble origins, to rise to a major position as lead actor in the Royal Shakespeare Company well before he was picked to play Captain Jean-Luc Picard and bec...

Philippa Gregory's "Tidelands" - Book Review
I have read a few of Stephen King’s books, avoiding the scary ones. My favourite is ‘Dolores Claiborne’
You have just popped up on my feed- so pleased! I retire in a few months, guess what I'll doing?! Really enjoy HF thank you
Have you read a series of historical novels based in America called the Kent Family chronicals. The First one is called 'The Bastard'. Very interesting . Written by John Jakes
No, I've not come across those. Thanks for the suggestion!
All the books look massive, definitely not a list for the lazy ones 😂😂😂
😂
My favorite historical novelist is Dorothy Dunnett, whose Lymond Chronicles series and her Nicolo Rising series are brilliant. She was a genius, able to weave historical events with fictional characters who are fascinating, complex, unpredictable, intelligent, and witty. The two series are interconnected. The Lymond Chronicles should be read first, although chronologically, it takes place 80 years after the Nicolo Rising series. Her language is rich, and her training as a portrait artist allows her to describe in vivid detail the events, characters, and settings of her novels. Her first novel, Game of Kings, was published in 1962. I highly recommend her.
i enjoyed your list and comments! my only comment is that Gone With the Wind is a very southern view of the history of the civil war. the story is very compelling, but perhaps not very accurate.
I get that. It's something I've discussed before in other videos 🙂
My dad and I loved Michener and often read his books in tandem. The Source isn’t perhaps as well-known as Hawaii or Centennial, but is my absolute favorite of his books.
I’ve read the majority of the books on your list, and could add many more. Love your channel - thank you.
Sharon Kay Penman’s Plantagenet series is very good. I prefer it over her Welsh books. Also Through a Glass Darkly by Koen is a fabulous book set in 18th century France and England.
New subscriber love your recommendations I read The Source MANY years ago first time i was totally lost in a book I love interacting with people who love literature as much as I do.
So glad your channel popped up in my recommendations - you now have a new subscriber. I recollect with pleasure reading some of the novels you mention - notably The Source, The Name of the Rose, Birdsong, and the Elizabeth Jane Howard series, others not yet read will join my TBR list. Among those I recall from my distant youth (when I was very much into ancient Greek and Roman history) include the Alexander trilogy by Mary Renault, Robert Graves' I, Claudius, and Lavinia by Ursula K. Le Guin (a non-fantasy novel by this marvellous writer).
I've read The Praise Singer by Mary Renault, and Le Guin's The Left Hand of Darkness (amazing book which I've talked about before). I definitely want to read more of her. I haven't read I, Claudius, but I remember the brilliant TV series in the 70s with Derek Jacobi.
Katherine by Anya Seaton is a fabulous book. Initially, a forbidden love story between Katherine and John of Gaunt from which our Monarchy directly descends. The real Katherine lived in Lincoln, UK, as I do now. A moving memorial to her can be found in Lincoln Cathedral.
Yes, that sounds interesting. I read a fascinating biography of Katherine Swynford by Alison Weir, which I also highly recommend.
As you mentioned Michener, Hawaii is high on my list. Extremely well written and though the story travels through time, always engaging. His characters are well drawn and sympathetic but history is the driver for all his writings I'm aware of.
Dorothy Dunnett. Also all the Patrick O’Brian books.
Remarkable Creatures was wonderful. I'd recommend!
Historical fiction is my favorite genre of books, and Edward Rutherford is one of my favorite authors. I've read most of his novels and enjoyed them all, I did find "China" to be a little cumbersome, though. Thank you for this list- its given me some new authors to try!
Thank you for your charming and winsome chat. I really enjoyed finding a lot of the books I’ve read and likewise relished in your list. Best Regards from North Carolina. Loved your cute munchkin dog.
Anything by Sharon Kaye Penman, Pauline Gedge's trilogy set in ancient Egypt, PF Chisholm's Robert Carey series, to name a very few!
M.M. Kaye’s novels: The Far Pavilions and Shadow of the Moon, set in India before, during, and after the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857. On my permanent reread list. Her mysteries are also well-crafted, and her 3-volume biography books are fascinating.
michener's books are all fantastic, except the mexico one was kinda dull.
i see so many in agreement w me about Hawaii by Michener 😂 Warms my heart. I gonna go to an extreme end of the "historical" fic spectrum and recommend the Earths Children series by Jean Auel. The amount of research she did to write the unique prehistoric series breathes life into a fantastical world. Thank for the list. Found some new novels to add to my TBR. 😊
Just subscribed. Thank you for your excellent video. Michener's Centennial is wonderful.
Don’t miss Conn Iggulden’s Genghis series.
I haven't read the Wolf Hall series yet but i bought a subscription of the TV series (which i otherwise never do) just so i could watch it many times. The way Hillary gave us possible reasoning for Thomas Cromwell's obvious retribution and his assistance in the downfall of Anne and her cohorts is brilliant!
Erik Larson. My all time favourite
I absolutely love the world Philip Pullman created! The original trilogy and Book of Dust (1-2). Can't wait till he releases the book 3!
I basically just came across this channel, and I'm absolutely in love. Great video, thank you for your recommendations, i made myself a huge list to read. I love Bernard Cornwell's The Last Kingdom series, I'm halfway through
Oh my…the UA-cam algorithm actually got it right by suggesting your channel! I love reading history and have been looking to break into historical fiction. Thank you for your insight (end of the video) and for these suggestions. Adding them to my TBR now and subscribing 🙌🏼
Oh I fell in love with Sanson's books this year and read, I think, 7 of them.
Written as contemporary novels in the 19th century but can now be seen as chronicles of the age, I suggest Anthony Trollope’s novels. My favorites are his two great series of novels, the Palliser novels (also known as the Political novels) and the Barsetshire novels. The first series is about the career and family life of a rising politician and his associates. The second series (which should actually be read first) deals with a fictional cathedral city and its denizens. Many characters crop up in multiple books and there is some crossover between the two series.
Yes, I like Trollope. Not strictly historical novels as they were contemporary at the time of writing - but I loved 'The Way we Live Now'.
The Shardlake novels by CJ Sansom are really engaging, I have them all. I do enjoy the detail of ordinary life that he includes. You might also like to try the Falco mysteries by Lindsey Davis and the Oxford Medieval Mysteries series by Ann Swinfen. Both are quite “gentle “ murder mystery series that have a great deal of detail about daily life in ancient Rome and Medieval Oxfordshire respectively. Thank you for your list I have read about half of them and just downloaded two more from my bookclubs. I cant seem to get hold of the “London” one unfortunately 😞
You should be able to get it on Amazon?
So glad you loved The Source. It was one of the formative books of my teenage years.
My favorite James Michener novel is “Centennial.” I read it about every 5 years. I have read “The Source” as well.
The Name of the Rose is one of my most favorite books-I am delighted that you have included it on your Top Ten Historical fiction books. My darling husband (who died this past February) introduced me to this delicious historical novel. He and I had so much in common, the most important being we were both bookworms. He also read most of Michener's books and raved about The Source. I read some of Michener, but somehow never got to The Source. Now I want to read Philippa Gregory's The Taming of the Queen and Cornwell's Fools and Mortals. I am thrilled that I stumbled onto your page. Have a wonderful Christmas and holiday season.
Thank you. I hope you have a lovely Christmas too - though I am sure it will not be the same this year without your husband, but I hope you have loving family around and lots of lovely memories to look back on.
Yes some really great books…I’m currently Y reading Conn Iggulden….
Lion Witch and the wardrobe was the first book I remember reading as a child that made me cry when Aslan was killed.
Me too!
i would highly recommend Dorothy Dunnett’s books as well! Her writing is exquisite! Her two series are The House of Niccolo and The Lymond Chronicles which take place in the 14th and 15th Centuries. Incomparable!
❤
Looking for my Penguin copy of "Fear and Trembling" today. I only scanned the beginning of it back in the 2005 days and kept thinking "Abraham Lincoln" at the time. A notorious Native American boy sacrificer?
I haven't read it.
I just watched this video and added every one that I hadn't already read to my TBR list. But I wanted to especially thank you for your praise of Birdsong. I read it about 3 years ago and it instantly became one of the best-and most moving-books I have ever read. And after a 74-year life as an avid reader, that's saying a lot! Your words made me decide to read it again.
I love The White Witch by Elizabeth Goudge!
Edith Pargeter's The Brothers of Gwynedd Quartet and The Heaven Tree Trilogy---glorious books! And Sigrid Unset's Kristin Lavransdatter trio--unmissable! Maybe these have been mentioned; there are too many comments to scroll through to check. Any such list must include Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey-Maturin novels--I've read them all seven times. And there's the best Civil War novel ever written, Michael Shaara's The Killer Angels.
Yes - I enjoyed the Heaven Tree Trilogy - thanks for reminding me of that!
I’m glad you mentioned The Source. I read it several years ago and loved it. I may read it again.
I LOVED the Angelique series by Sergeanne Golon (really Anne). The lurid covers didn’t do the series justice because the historical research was top notch. Desiree by Annemarie Selinko Lots and lots by Norah Lofts DuMaurier.
Thank you for this.. very helpful. Always like a good recommendation. I’ve read a couple of these already but the rest have gone on my reading list. As for my favourite novel ….that would be Precious Bane by Mary Webb. 😊
My favourite historical novel is ‘A Place Of Greater Safety’ By Hillary Mantel. It’s about The French Revolution. If you haven’t already read, you really must. Thank you for that list of historical novels. I really do recommend C.J Sanson also, he is extremely good.
Read all the Mary Stewart in my early teens. The first one was Airs Above the Ground. Loved the reserved English style.
All excellent recommendations! The Source also had a profound effect on me in my late teens. A fascinating read. Let me add James Clavell’s novels: King Rat, Taipan, Shogun… also the novel “Aztec”, another sweeping historical and sometimes grisly fiction tale. Pillars of the Earth gripped me so much I read it non-stop over a 3 day weekend. Happy reads to you all!
We traveled to Hawaii some years ago so in preparation I read Michener ‘s Hawaii. It was enthralling. I have read several others and have loved them all. Love you and Tillie! ❤
I loved Hilary Mantel's trilogy on Thomas Cromwell: Bring Up The Bodies, Wolf Hall, The Mirror and The Light. I read many James Michener books several years ago: Hawaii, The Source, Chesapeake Bay, etc. They were highly enjoyable. Also loved London and New York by Edward Rutherford. I must try all these other authors, thank you.
I worry about books, especially historical " fiction ", that an uneducated reader will take as gospel. You read two chapters of a novel, knew immediately that it was fraudulent, and stopped. How many people believe that it's fact?? Scares me!! Love all your recommendations. Thank you for taking the time to share your favorites.
It scares me too - that's why I get annoyed with writers who don't bother to get the facts right. I believe we writers have a responsibility of integrity for our readers, as much as we can.
