The basic science behind the cryogenics of Captain America is that his enhanced human body was able to lower its own freezing temperature, which prevented Rogers from dying in the ice and Steve Rogers does age. Much underappreciated element of TWS: the genius of getting Robert Redford to play Alexander Pierce. Literally, America's goldenboy, as smooth and charismatic and charming as ever, but this time as an actual villain. You wonder how Hydra infiltrates SHIELD so successfully? Put a face like Redford's at the forefront. And, it's worth noting that Redford starred as the hero of an iconic paranoia thriller, THREE DAYS OF THE CONDOR, with the late great Max von Sydow that remains the model for this sort of movie.
And, of course, Redford was a HUUUUUUGE get for Marvel. His casting was the signal to other High Profile Actors who'd otherwise have avoided this sort of thing to get into the mix. Sure, Marvel had got Tony Hopkins and Tommy Lee Jones and William Hurt before, but they all had long histories of doing smaller parts in genre movies of this sort. You likely don't get other major stars coming into the MCU if Redford hadn't given it a kind of legitimacy, people like Michael Douglas, Michelle Pfeiffer, Glenn Close, Tilda Swinton, Cate Blanchett, Rachel McAdams and so forth. It's a bit like when Sir Alec Guinness did Star Wars: suddenly all of the heavy-hitters were willing to jump into the sci-fi fray they otherwise would've run screaming from before.

I think most of the movies have a bit of grounding. Guardians of the Galaxy and aspects of Thor have very out there ideas but when it comes to the psychology of the characters, who are heavily traumatized people, there’s very grounded. Rocket’s story does remind me of a lot of real life stories of discrimination, etc.
MCU does sorta handle the grounded, mundane, and the cosmic aspects very well.

  • @jp3813
    @jp3813 3 роки тому +17

I personally loved the theme of soldiers vs spies in this film. Steve, Bucky, & Sam are former soldiers living in the modern world of spies where compartmentalization is the foundation of national security (Natasha, Fury, Agent 13, Rumlow, Pierce, etc... are all either hiding a secret or lying), which Steve openly detests. That is until he's forced to honor a dying man's warning to not trust anyone by hiding evidence and mustering up the best lie he could: "I don't know". Which both Natasha and Pierce easily pick up on, further cementing that such a method just doesn't suit him. Hence, Steve decides to simply tell the truth that he can't reveal what he knows, leading Pierce to turn him into a fugitive and Natasha to show him the ways of a spy in order to stay one step ahead of SHIELD. Even though her methods prove to be more effective than his in the modern world, he still questions how she could live such a dishonest life. Especially since the only person they can trust who's not under SHIELD's radar is a former pararescueman, and another acquaintance of Steve's that they could've trusted turns out to be literally brainwashed by Pierce. Ultimately, the turning point of their predicament comes not through the ways of a spy but by Steve using something that spies can never have: integrity. After breaking into SHIELD, he confidently gets on a mic and tells this far-fetched story of a supposedly defunct Nazi organization infiltrating the agency for the past several decades via compartmentalization. With this claim, he gives the agents an ultimatum on which side to believe: Captain America's words or each other's. While the modern world has made way for better alternatives to sacrificing soldiers on the battlefield, Cap proves that some traditional ways are best not forgotten. For no other Avenger could've turned the tide twice w/ just his truthful words.

What I feel this movie really excels at, and some other later movies definitely lack, is character. You really get a sense of who these characters are and how they relate to one another. There's Steve and Natasha building their relationship, which was up to this point almost purely professional, into a real friendship. Sam gets introduced, and it is apparent that, despite knowing Steve is Captain America, he treats him just like he would any guy he met from the start. Then, of course, there's Bucky, whose relationship to Steve defines the climax of the movie - Steve literally dropping his shield and being willing to die rather than hurt his old friend.
And I think that carries over into the fight scenes. You see them working together, each having their own unique style of dealing with different obstacles. The set pieces are awesome, but they wouldn't be so memorable if the fights themselves weren't so "in character", for lack of a better phrasing.
While it is of course epic to see so many people come together in later movies, if you have a smaller cast you can dive into these characters way better and this movie is a prime example of that.

One of the reasons why I think this film is top tier in the MCU (or just action films in general) is that when it comes to action films, especially those of the spy sub genre, there is rarely, if ever, attention given to character development-- its just all fighting and explosion and often a plot that isn't really long lasting beyond that film-- but this film has it all in spades: intense AMAZINGLY choreographed fights, character development and not just witty banter (as if often mistaken for character development) and a impactful narrative.

Well... I'd argue it's having something to fight for. He needs the fight.
Bucky and Peggy are remnants of that old life. Ofc it had its share of problems like getting beat up in alleys, looked down on, war, and having to earn his place in the military etc, but he loved his life back then.
Fighting represented his old life. He was fighting all his life for what he wanted and to protect the people he loved. They fought to protect him too.
So suddenly not having a reason to fight (especially after the alien invasion from Avengers ended) just didn't feel right. It was like an artist not being able to make art.
But yeah, it was a form of depression and I def agree it goes overlooked.

Being a super soldier brings them to the peak of human condition and makes toxins practically useless and also gives them increased stamina but gives them an increase in metabolism (faster healing too). Cap does age like a normal person. He survived his deep freeze because of the regenerative properties of the serum otherwise he would have gone through freezer burn.
Widow has a variant of the super soldier formula in her. like cap, increased stamina among others and immunity to most toxins, but not to the degree of cap.
for bucky, he was likely experimented on with a version of the super soldier serum too during WWII when Zola was experimenting on him before cap saved him. it's likely why he too survived his fall. Just like Cap though, to get to the present day, he was kept on ice and thawed out for missions.

First he is the innocent young soldier off to WW2, next he is the tortured Winter Soldier, next he is Bucky again but not the same as that young dashing soldier, now a tired PTSD still brainwashed assassin. Then the Bucky freed of the brainwashing but left adrift in a world with no best friend, no family, and haunted by all the memories of those he killed over the years. He now faces a fifth Bucky going forward, one that has faced his demons and realizes he can use his power for good as a Super Hero and he can trust people and build healthy relationships. Also, it proves how to make a sympathetic hero with a dark world around him, not compromising his morals and values and that you don't need a five movies's arc to get the definitive Captain America. Yes, I'm talking how Steve Rogers is a better Clark Kent than what Snyder tried to pull. He's a guy who came from a world who always put him down and still didn't let the people around him stopping him from being a hero, not like someone who can't stand criticism and throws away his superhero job cause "SOME people are mean" and "not everyone loves me".

In some of the comics (not sure if all but all the ones I read), Steve actually doesn't age at all. In one of them they figure this out because he spends 12 years in another dimension, and hasn't aged a day when he gets home, so sheild is like "wait a damn second". I totally get why they didnt include this in the movies, they would've had to recast Cap every 2 movies to keep him looking the right age, but it was part of what made him seem so "super" and almost "godly" in the comics.
