Ryan calling out Jim's 'questionable' job performance is hilarious with context considering Ryan never managed to make a single sale when he was still working at Scranton, lmao.
Same as how Jim made Michael work when he was manager even tho Jim never worked and Michael didn't call him out
I mean instead Ryan started the fire
Yes, but that wasn't from lack of trying. He just didn't have the people skills for being a salesman.
Accidentally disliked! Sorry!
He didn’t make a sale at the Michael Scott Paper Company, either.

It’s crazy how accurate this is to real life bosses from luring you in with sports related conversations and then dropping performance warnings/write ups at the end.
Yep, used to love this scene until I lived it. In my case, the director suddenly put a meeting on my calendar, without context or explanation, with the invite saying the only attendees were going to be me and her. Next day, the director and HR director walked through the door laughing and joking around, then wrote me up for some vague reason and warned me I was going to lose my job. I didn't sign the doc; instead I took a position elsewhere, cause that day confirmed what I had long suspected about what the director thought of me.
yup. Had a former supervisor who did that all the time. I had the last laugh though when I submitted my resignation. I went to go see him and proceeded to chat him up about his weekend and how he spent it and just lots of blah blah blah bullshit for probably 10 minutes. He was starting to visibly get angry because shock, he didn't like it when HIS time was being wasted despite doing the same thing to me and my coworkers numerous times. When I finally tell him "oh and btw, I've accepted a new position and my last day will be on this date" for once he was finally silent and you could see that his brain was processing that I finally pulled the same stunt that he played on me and others for years.

Ivan Jim does become a better salsman in later seasons.
Fair enough, but the fact remains he was just not a motivated person.

Ivan The show establishes him and dwight are the best salesman in the office and that branch is the most successful in the entire company, so he's obviously more motivated then most people who work in the company. And he still has time to prank dwight every day.

Big WHUPF 😂
The layers of Ryan's scumbaggery in this scene are just astonishing. He's not only using Jim's weaknesses, his affinity towards Pam and his apathy for his job (despite him doing very well at it) against him, but he also used Toby and his poor self-esteem and jealousy towards Jim re: Pam as a tool to get to Jim.
Truly disgusting, and also excellent writing.
Thank you. Your captured just how manipulative Ryan is in this scene. It seems to be going over a lot of people's heads here.
At least Ryan gets karma with his Closet Office.
I think B. J. Novak is a great writer. He didn't care about the perception of people towards him and his character. He wrote what would be the best for thw show, even if it meant to keep Ryan out of empathy!!

Ryan was cool in the first season then he completely changed, he became so arrogant and rude when he became boss and even when he came back after being fired he was still mostly the same.
he's arrogant since day one
I've seen this first-hand. I used to work at ShopRite years ago, and I was good friends with this one dude who managed the meat dept. He was pretty much cool with everybody. Then he got promoted to a store manager, and that very week, his attitude completely changed. He became a total dick, that everyone started to hate. It is, in fact, possible to make sure everybody is doing what they are supposed to, and occasionally light a fire under a few butts to get them motivated - AND also be genuine and fair towards everyone. Some people don't have that ability, and just allow their egos to over-inflate, and think that treating everyone like shit is a productive way to get things done.
I agree. I think Ryan character got tired of all the craziness at Scranton. He probably thought he was better than everyone else there. He allowed the power to go to his head and when his project was failing he tried to use fraud to save it. Even after he went to jail he still had this attitude. He even kept a list of people he would fire once he got back on top.
Cocaine changes people.
I thought his comments before he became VP were so funny. After he got promoted I was really sad that he wasn't there to make his comments aout the office.
Ryan is so perfectly douchey this season.

@@tiananman Exactly. The idea that people shouldn’t be allowed to “goof around” a little bit and just have fun in general at work, *even when they get all of their work done*, is silly. Most people, even good employees, aren’t weirdos who worship the company that they work for (like Dwight does).

You're supposed to. Also BJ is also one of the writers on the show and I'm sure he makes his character unlikable on purpose lol
Natália Teixeira that's beauty of it though, a show isn't always complete without having a cast of people that shouldn't be liked, keeps the drama a bit more intense
I love how Pam notices small things related to Jim and she almost always guesses it correctly and also nudges him into the right direction. it's amazing how she says "because you're so important". she's not a fool to think that arrogant Ryan called Jim for anything good.
That is one of the most singularly uncomfortable moments in the entire series...and that's saying something.
Toby's beef with Jim was over Pam but Ryan used Toby against Jim because Jim wasn't working hard enough so Ryan could double check the inventory which was what got him arrested.
"Now i understand why Michael hates you so much"- Andy to Toby
Ryan really gives Jim a formal warning while he
1). Started a fire trying to cook a cheese pita
2). Never made a single sale while working at the Scranton Branch
ad hominem
That way Jim talks at the end is heartbreaking. He's now concerned about losing his career but has to keep positive for his new relationship with Pam. It sucks when you're worried about finances and you lie so only you have to worry and everyone else can be happy.
Ugh, I have had this conversation with a boss. First they try to disarm you with small talk, “how is the sports team, how was weekend, blah blah” then suddenly go serious mode of how you have been messing up. Formal warnings to try to intimidate you. “I thrive on constructive criticism” I can see right through that. Managers that get their egos all wrapped up and bruised by any sort of defiance so they have to try to crush you down.
Yes, Jim wastes a lot of time we see at work, but he is also second best salesman in the office after Dwight, who also wastes a bunch of time. A real leader would find a way to actually motivate their employee rather than try to prop up their ego by trying to stomp on them. Yes this scene triggered me.
The motivations beneath the surface there for Toby and Ryan are so true to life for sooo many people working for incompetent/unprofessional bosses.
that will result in a full disadulation.
What’s that?
@@casadilla111 You don't wanna know...
This was the perfect storm. Ryan now despised Jim for going over his head and had the perfect ally to back up his retaliation.
Toby is the perfect ally because we know he doesn't particularly like Jim because he's with Pam, and any complaint lodged against him about "hanging out too much at reception" is course going to strike a sympathetic nerve in him.
Thank you, someone finally gets it. Everyone saying Ryan chose Toby because they both liked Pam doesn’t make sense and they probably didnt understand the episode. The fact that Ryan did it out of retaliation made it so much more funnier
But you're forgetting that Ryan tried to build himself up as a big New York ladies man in front of Michael and Dwight, yet somehow he goes after and strikes out with every woman interested in Jim. He tried to get Katie's number when he thought Jim wasn't dating get anymore. Then he tried to email Karen and ask her out. Finally, he straight up asked Pam out to dinner, only to find out she's dating Jim. Every woman he goes after is more attracted to Jim, while Ryan's stuck with Kelly. That's subconsciously why he has this affinity with Toby in this scene, while using him at the same time. Which is incredibly low. It's really about the women and Jim's comments to Wallace too. Ryan is a skeeze who would resent Jim in both fronts.
Never trust a boss giving you a formal warning if his shirt’s unbuttoned and he just got rejected by your girlfriend earlier
I never noticed that from Pam's expression, she was able to tell Jim wasn't feeling go great but she didn't know what to say.

I always felt sorry for Toby for how Michael treated him...except for this scene.
Lol @ Toby living vicariously through Ryan.
Ryan acting like he cared about his job this season.... what a time
Even without sight, pam still knew something was up
Jim may not have been the most motivated, but in his own way, he was honest in what he thought of people. Ryan, on the other hand, was a passive-aggressive, insincere, snarky supervisor who used bureaucratic loopholes to find a way to get back at Jim. Unfortunately. this is the kind of supervisor that is all too common these days.
Haha! Toby's motive was jealousy. He was very very attracted to Pam. And Ryan never made a single sale in his time... Jim is the second best.
Don't let this let you forget that...................... Ryan started the fire !
This was the moment I decided Micheal,s hatred of Toby was not only justified but should respected and emulated. Death to Toby...NO..no let Toby live and suffer living as Toby
I agree. Toby is a complete piece of shit. Michael had it wrong about that gun with 2 bullets and Hitler, Bin Laden, and Toby in a room scenario. The only answer is shoot Toby in each knee cap and then pistol whip him to death!
That's pretty violent tho... just let him suffer in his passive aggressive silence.
Why in that moment? I mean he didn't even speak with Jim. Toby just has the bad luck of having to be there as the HR guy. This as all on Ryan.
And Ryan wasn't even wrong. Maybe he did out of the wrong reasons. Jim DID spend a lot of work time pranking Dwight and flirting with Pam.
@@guy_incognito___5480 jim still gets a lot of work done i think, i'm pretty sure he does this stuff in his free time (for the most part) also toby's a creep towards pam, he doesnt really back off once he knows theyre dating, he just gets passive aggressive and likes when stuff doesnt go their way because of his jealousy, pretty childish

Gaslighting, the quality of every good boss
I’ve actually had similar instances with bosses in my own career. It’s funny how true-to-life this scene actually is.
I love that 180c shift in tone the second he realized that they actually mean that warning. It's the last thing you'd expect to happen on this show, someone calling out another for not caring about anything but in fact, what it feels like is that this shift comes to show us how unfit Jim is to this environment, he's there for and because of Pam, and staying in a place you're not happy in for someone you love is exactly what I would do and I think it's very brave of Jim, but it also means giving up a part of yourself. Giving up a dream you once had but you just don't try and reach it anymore, and that's a side of Jim we rarely see so I think it was a very important reminder of Jim's loneliness and the sadness always hidden somewhere behind that smile. And it's fascinating to see so thank you for sharing.
Watching the clip where Jim puts Ryan in the closet after this is so satisfying.
Ryan was really letting the power get to his head.

I think Toby snitched on Jim to Ryan because he was dating Pam, also of cause Ryan knows what Jim gets up to as well and maybe on his own power trip, but a feeling based on Toby’s interview he sort of hinted why he got a warning, so it seems he snitched because he was jealous.
Toby said Pam 3 Times in the span of 9 sec.

A M It doesn’t really matter. A lot of stuff that goes on in the show would obviously never be tolerated in a real workplace (that’s one reason it’s funny). This was one of the few times we saw some realism. But yeah, there was also bias in Ryan’s character.
Ryan and Toby liked Pam, that's why they teamed up against Jim. Toby was being a snake, and Ryan was abusing his power as boss, based upon a personal grudge against Jim.
@A M even if that was the case ryan had every right to do what he did to jim, in the real world ambitous people will outdo lazy people like jim. no one cares if youre nice and smart or good looking in real world(though ryan himself isnt bad) its all about getting the job done. ur there to do stuff not make friends trust me.

The acting in this show feels ironically good
Ryan has too much to say for a person who begins his sale with: *"Hi, Hi, Hi, Hi, Hi..."*
