      i think it's coz he's his authentic self with coworkers, but with clients, he's only trying to make a sale.
      In a weirdly wholesome twist, Michael only acts silly at the office coz he sees his employees as trusted family/friends.

      I mean, he chose Chillis because he knew the client was down to earth, and looking to make cuts - it allowed him to present a sympathetic, folksy vibe. The entire thing was 5D chess. He's even pretending to be tipsy near the end - notice how he snaps in and out of his "drunkenness" to stop Jan, when she's making a mistake?

      I like to think that Dwight had a hand in things by barging in there and rambling on and ending with the misstep of mentioning the gay son. It probably wasn't a good look, but for sure Michael did have tremendously good salesmanship there

    Honestly if Michael was this smooth outside of sales he would be an amazing person. The way he says "Corporate is gonna go ballistic" is smooth af.

    Genuinely Michael is rather smart in the first one. Jan constantly talks about how hey provide great personal service and aren’t like the big chains, Jan says it, but Michael proves it

      Always start with the personal connection don’t start selling or throwing out offers before that! It’s easy to get into the sales mood which causes distrust between the potential client and salesperson just imagine a scenario where you are buying from a close friend or family member your trusting they won’t screw you over same thing make friends first then soft sell them hard close!

    The underlying joke of the office is that Michael is a fantastic salesman which is why he was able to be promoted to regional manager at age 24. Despite the promotion he's a horrible manager which is very common in corporate where you're promoted to the level you can't advance beyond.

      I always liked how they dealt with Michael as a salesman. Anytime he was in charge of a sale, he crushed it, aside for when he had that night time call center job. And it was constantly hinted at that Michael was one of the best salesmen, so it made sense why he was promoted to manager. He just had no idea what he was doing most of the time.

      I wouldn’t say Michael was a horrible manager. We were shown instances where he was actually competent, to say the most, like the moments where Kevin was smart.

    I love how he stops Jan from interrupting because he knows he has struck a chord with the client, sounds like he is just waffling but it's all a big plan

      notice how the first time he stops Jan he does this weird really long noise, but the second time when he's about to close it, he does a really subtle and quick "shush" because he's fully in the zone

    I love that he remembers the name of all the *insignificant* roles in our everyday life. When I say insignificant I don’t mean unimportant but the majority overlook them: waitress, receptionist, etc. he remembers Megan from Chill’s, Stephanie who is David’s assistant, and sherry who is Jan’s assistant. This tells a lot about Michael.

    The episode where Michael was negotiating with David Wallace was when I realized just how good of a businessman he is. "I don't need to wait out Dunder Mifflin, I just need to wait out you" that always gets me . They should have included the whole clip where he says his company means nothing to him which is why he doesn't care (or whatever the line was)

      that episode is more about how good of a guy david is...he paid mike back for not taking raises to help the company raising dwight to carry the legacy and for going against jan his lover for the company saying they never treated him poorly and david realized his mistake finally that he hurt mike personally...david knew mike was broke when he said i just have to wait you out he could of just delayed the inevitable which is to say he could of said no deal and by the end of the week mike would be broke and out of business....but he decided to buy mike out anyways in that moment cause of the desperation in his eyes to show he is a good friend and could hold his end up in the relationship which is good business ethics...it hurt the company which caused the sabre merger but so what he ended up saving it in the end in season 9 anyways so all is forgiven....

    I still love that Chilli's meeting where he continually takes back control from Alpha Jan. Then tops it off by shushing her and basically telling her to zip it and leave him be. Such a power play. She was speechless. Both parts played so well.

    Michael is a secret genius that really works well. The episode were stanley shouts at Michael, he drops the goofy act. He tells stanley that he wont put up with him disrespecting him in front of everyone. You can see that Stanley was put back in his place and realized michael isn't dumb. There's various instances were he does this.

      The whole season seemed to be about Michael’s strained relationship with the company and him realizing his feelings of betrayal. Mike is a guy that goes 120% for people, especially Dunder Mifflin and this season was the one where he started to realize the loyalty and dedication was only ever one way.

    I'm not going to lie, I'm not a huge office fan. BUT, when they showed Michael actually being good at his job, I really enjoyed watching the show. Not just them telling us that Michael is a good salesman, but the few times they actually showed it.

    The most dangerous thing about Michael is how he acts or being an big idiot for like 90% of the time. So when that 10% hits and he gets serious, nobody could see that coming and completely get caught unprepared and baffled at how crazy capable the guy really is.

    Fun fact: when they were making the US version, Ricky Gervais and Stephen Martin told them to make the manager actually good at his job as it is easier to get fired in the US than the UK. it would be less believable that someone awful at their job would still have the position over there.

    my favourite part of micheal is even though he consistently makes what you might call legendary sales, he never really brags about it, he knows and believes in his own natural talent and doesnt feel the need to make everyone else know about it

      the flip side of this was always interesting too, as he gets genuinely pretty upset when he loses sales. the episode where everyone partners up and andy blows his sale with michael always stood out to me.

    Jan’s newfound admiration for Michael in the way she looks and smiles at him when he makes the sale is one of the most satisfying scenes on television. Who doesn’t want someone looking at you like that?

      Though she's ultimately still Jan, and a terrible fit for Michael. Holly smiles at Michael from the get go and patiently accepts his foibles. I do however, agree, that everyone wants that kind of love/respect.

    As a former salesman and broker, I think Michael is an outstanding salesman. He puts the needs of the client or customer first above all. This translates to a longer more sustainable relationship of the two businesses.

    If you pay close attention to this show, Michael is actually the most loving, genuine guy with occassional strokes of genius especially when he feels supported and included.
    Its his insecurity, feeling of always being on the outside and lack of love that makes him act the way he does. Superb writing

    2:03 Michael mentions the schools & hospitals in the county, he knows how many there are of each.
    At the start of this episode(s2 e7), Jan tells him about 13 schools & 2 hospitals under the county while Michael acts like…well, Michael, but he actually listened. He actually is a genius at sales.

    That moment where David closes his eyes is the part where he remembers why he put up with Michael's comic unprofessionalism, and why he respected Michael so much

    2:40 that flooding smile was me earlier in the scene realizing that Michael was selling by NOT selling. One of the best sales “tactics” I’ve learned was just connecting with the customer as a person then closing when you’ve earned their trust.

    Jan's approach: Try to convince them to do business by offering a lower price, making it all about the bottom line.
    Michael's approach: Make them want to do business with you, then show how you can save them money, making it about the relationship first and the bottom line second.

    Michaels problem was that he tried too hard to be liked as manager. Nothing wrong with wanting to be close to your workers. His method was just either ridiculous or trying too hard.
    But when it came down to business, the nut-cutting, making sales, he did great. In short, whenever he stopped trying to impress people or be liked and just focused, he normally did great.

    I love how he works David Wallace over. Great lesson in how most executives are just looking at short term gains that make them look good. Human nature.
    Dunder Mifflin losing money and customers would be bad for him personally. Whereas a one-off buyout of Michael Scott Paper could be explained away.

    When he’s just being himself he’s really cool, charming and just an all around great guy. The problem is that he’s always trying so hard to be something he’s not. One of the best examples is when he’s around kids he goes into auto pilot normal mode and is really cool.

    I love The Client episode for this reason. And the writing is incredible. From the first minute he is already laying the groundwork. He calls the waitress by name showing that he cares about relationships which ends up being the way he wins then over.

    Some of my favorite moments is when they show how good Michael, Jim, and Dwight are at their jobs. They don’t just tell, they have incredibly well crafted scenes with subtle dialogue and facial expressions that shows exactly why they haven’t gone out of business.

    Michael was always at his best when he wasn’t trying, he was a people person and knew how to handle people in business, which goes to show how he acquired the most accounts in his work force and became manager, he had the biggest clients on his list.

    As worrying as Michael can be… he is actually extremely smart 😂 I like to think that he does silly things to make people smile and feel better about things, but in reality he knows exactly what he’s doing and when it comes down to business he shows exactly what he’s really doing.     I love that Dwight knows how good he is at sales, but as soon as Michael says he’s going to steal his biggest client with him listening, Dwight goes into extreme panic mode. He knows that if Michael wants it, there isn’t anything he can do to stop him.

    What I love about the writing is that Michael is ACTUALLY doing decent as a salesman and manager. There’s even that episode where his branch out-sells everyone else. This makes the show much more realistic and immersive. And it also makes Michaels silliness and outrageous antics even more funny and unpredictable 😂
