Having holidayed on the broads for 50years we have only drifted twice and we only lower the mudweight gentlely. Once was we accidentally left two mudweights out at night (we were fishing and didn't want the boat spinning) and the second time we were on a short rope. We normally mudweight on a long rope and the only trouble we have had is when some goon in a sailing boat cut right in front of our moored boat and caught the rope with his keel , the larges thing we caught that week.

Yes, lowering gently will work if the bottom is soft enough. I just like to give it the best chance possible by dropping from a height. Even with dropping I've had the thing drag so always be aware when mud weighted.

Can’t believe you didn’t tie off the fag end before lowering the weight 🤦‍♂️ school boy error! Would of been worth mentioning not standing in a bight or coil before lowering!
I’d also suggest anchoring in the Lee to give sea room should your anchor fail.
    4/10 for effort! Try harder
Also, if you trust an iPad or any device in the broads as a navigation aid or especially anchor alarm! Best of luck with your gps accuracy and signal

Did you tie the rope(warp) to the three pronged wheel beside the anchor chain gypsy? This is for releasing the clutch to allow the anchor and chain to fall under gravity. You could cause the clutch to release unexpectedly. Suggest you use a mooring cleat instead or the cleat on top of the winch and tie the rope end off before lowering as the boat could rock necessetating you to move your foot to balance yourself.

I did, just as a temporary solution to demonstrate the mud weight as my boats cleats are off to each side. Thanks for watching 😀👍

Thanks, I needed this info. Newbie question....what knot do you use to tie the weight on please?

Hi, thanks for watching. If you watch the splicing video that was to clip onto my mud weight as I find it helpful to be able to take it off and use it for something else at short notice (dinghy painter).
If I were going to tie directly to the mud weight I would use the round turn and two half hitches ( shown in the three knots video).
      Happy boating 🙂

NEVER just lower it down like that in my experience if there is a breeze the boat will just drag, doesn't matter if there is no wind or is wind lob it in and let it stick well in the mud, if you struggle to get it out put your boat in reverse and slowly pull the weight out and then go and lift it

What’s the navigation app you’re using and is it any good for the broads?
Very helpful video by the way! Subscribed.

Hi Stuart. There is going to be a video on the apps I use coming soon and I will be covering it in detail with it's practical uses on the broads.
Thanks for the comment, subscribing and of course just watching in the first place.

And you wake up in the morning and the wind has changed which is normal on a broad.

I love being on the broads,I was there with my girlfriend early march,I’m hoping to move my boat from the great Ouse at some point in the not too distant future, there’s a job or two that needs doing on it too before it can go on the broads though but when I get her there I won’t need to hire a boat every year 🤘🏻😃🤘🏻
