Mike's boating life
United Kingdom
Приєднався 3 січ 2015
This channel is all about boating. From the very first steps into boating right up to more experienced stuff. From "how to" mechanical and maintenance videos, use of onboard navionics and electrics, to trips out on our boat. We will try to cover as much as we can and also answer as many viewers questions as we can.

Thanks for the nice comment Howard and for watching. :-)

Thanks for watching anyway.
Lovely boat hope to see you on the water now your south side I normally do between oulton broad beccles and Norwich il give u a shout if I see ya.all the best
Hi. Please do give us a wave. What is your boats name? Thanks for the nice comment and for watching.

Lovely upload, never been to Polkey's Mill moorings, looks gorgeous & very peaceful, definitely going next time I'm on the broads. Nice music too, thanks.👍
Hi. Unfortunately, since making this video Pokey's mill moorings have closed to the public. Don't know why or if they will open again but it looks like it has been taken back into private hands. Shame, nice moorings. Thanks for the comment and for watching.
Mike, might bump into you one day. we have recently moved our boat from the midlands to the broads and now are moored at broom boats marina with our boat Rhapsody. We cruise the southern broads regularly and will keep a look out for you, don't forget to wave if you spot us. We do have a few videos of our boating experiences in the Midlands on you tube, just type in my name (David Greatbatch) and you should find them.
Lovely video Mike. Is your boat a Birchwood TS37?
Hi Tommo. Close, it's a Birchwood TS31. I'm going to do an in depth boat walkthrough in the not to distant future (winter video) when the weather is to crappy for anything else. ;-) As always, thanks for the comment and of course for watching in the first place.
@boatermike my dad used to have a 37, I wondered if it could be his old boat, obviously not 🤣
Thanks for the video. Nice aerial footage too. But disappointed no footage of going under the bridge. I was hanging on waiting to see it 😊 Cheers.
Hi. We had every intention of filming the bridge but the clearance was so close that it kinda fell by the wayside. It took all of our concentration and effort just to get the boat under let alone film it all which I was a bit disappointed about :-(. Thanks for the comment and for watching in the first place :-).
Hi John. We moved from Stalham down to Brundall.
Hi Mike. Where did you move from and too?
We moved from Broadsedge marina in the north to Brundall bay marina in the south.
@@boatermike thanks for the reply mike. Will be moving onto the broads in the next couple of years. Funnily enough I was looking up ts31’s and stumbled upon your videos. Was it ludham bridge that was a key factor to move? Did you consider wroxham etc for a berth? How you finding brundall as been looking to moore there as closer to work. Kind regards. John. TS31 fan. (Can’t afford a 37)
Hi John. Yes it was Ludham bridge. We could fit under it but not often enough. I didn't really consider Wroxham as over the last 25 years we have been all over the northern broads so fancied a change. Also, there is only a handful of places to visit in the north, all of which are usually full up. The south has more places to go and they usually have lots of spaces, plus long distances in between so you can give the engines a good run. We love our TS31. For us it has the best balance of room for the size of boat. It's very easy to handle and has twin engines and a half decent turn of speed to make coastal cruising a possibility in the not to distant future ;-)
@@boatermike thanks for the info mike. Coastal cruising is definitely on my agenda. That’s why I haven’t been looking at a typical broads cruiser. Thanks for the info👍
Good bit of advise there I lost my mate on the broads up north cove on the south side last July we was on on his boat having a few beers playing some tune and al of a sudden his boat started sinking and rolled over he wasn’t found for 3 days I think your right that sludge that sits on the bottom of the river if you get your foot stuck in there your brown bread .stay safe out there al the best bud
Really sorry to hear that. When you are on a boat have a good time, absolutely have a good time. It's what we go boating for but always bear in mind where you are and some of the things that can go wrong. Be ready for anything. Thanks for the comment and for sharing your story.
Good advice. Sorry to hear about the deaths, mind you it does seem strange they were not on the national news. I swim lots but obviously I'm on the south coast, not on the broads
Unfortunately there are deaths most, if not every year. For some reason though they don't make national news. Thanks for the comment and for watching.
So sad this always happens, but fantastic advice! 👍
Thanks :-)
a brilliant video thank you so muck guys , mike may i ask what air draft you have as we were looking at broads edge to moor as looks fantastic , i even saw margeret and andy? with theri boat who were so helpful to me when we visited and asked so many questions - thank you so much
Hi. Our air draught is 8'8" with everything folded down. It's normally very tight but we managed. This year though, with the lack of a summer until the end of July it has been a problem getting out. Thanks for the comment and for watching.
@@boatermike ok thats great the boat i was looking at was 8 feet 6 so similar heaight i think with windows folded down, loving the videos so blooming helpful , just watched braydon water one and you are sooooo right if you watch something it imprint on your mind far far better than any book or chart thank you so much for taking time to do
@@LABTESTED Your welcome. Thanks for nice comments and don't forget to give us a shout and a wave if you see us out.
We haven't had a boat on the Broads for 20 odd years but don't remember any problems at Ludham bridge, seeing recent video's on here about the place has it got silted up or are a lot of things caused by holiday boaters? Good views of the Broads from the air thanks, it brought back great memories.
Hi Ray. Not a problem with the bridge as such, I just have the wrong boat for that stretch of water. I have just been getting under for the last few years but it's to much of a hassle so had to move. Thanks for the comment and for watching.
Hi nice episode and content, thank you. Can I please ask what make and year you boat is. She looks lovely. We moored at Brundell Bay way back in 2004 with our Princess 32. Unfortunately we left the biating scene in 2005. Looking to return again.
Hi Howard. Thanks for the comment and for watching. She is a Birchwood TS31 and she was built in 1989. Look forward to seeing you back on the water soon.
Hope you don’t mind me asking Mike but what is your air draught? Ours is 8’6 and heading north next week. By the way we are at St Olaves so may see you around, cheers 👍
Hi Joe. My air draught is 8'8". At 8'6" you should be OK for Ludham at low tides. Keep an eye on the weather if your the other side though. If there is any very wet storms coming, get back out. I know about that from first hand experience. Thanks for the comment and for watching and see you out on the water some time.

Nice walk through. Really handy for when about to embark on the trip through Great Yarmouth 👍
Thanks for the nice comment and thanks for watching. Give us a wave if you see us out and about.

@@ChristianLawrence that's great. Aim for slack water and enjoy it.
Hi Mike - a great video which evidences the challenges of “that bloody bridge” and the need to get the right side of it. Needless to say, we are all missing you and Joy and the gap in the mooring is only matched by that in our hearts. Don’t be strangers - I’ll drop you a line when Lou, TOSHA and I do our next breakout from bloody-Ludham and head South. Until then - make sure you enjoy safe sailing and great weather Buddy. All The Best, The Broadsedge Neighbours!!
Hi Max. Yes it did us a bit of a favour holding us back like that at the end as it validated our very hard decision to move. We will be visiting Broadsedge on a regular basis and it will be great to see you again when you venture down. Thanks.
I could see it was rather tearful for you moving, Best of luck we have our narrowboat on the lancaster canal.
Thanks you and thanks for watching.
Good luck on your new adventures.
Thank you and thanks for watching.
Great new spot, definitely goid to get away from that dam bridge
We feel released. Thanks for watching.

@@fat_tommo_goes_boating Thanks Tommo. Keep watching ;-)
Heartbreaking to leave the beautiful northern broads, but southern broads have a lot to offer with access to sea and Breydon water for a thrash out
We are spoilt for choice now. So many adventures coming up.
See you soon great video
Hi Paul. Thanks. See you soon.
I had a mooring in brundall, for 4 years, very different down that end of the broads, but you know all about that, good luck and happy boating !😊
thanks :-)
Hi, great video. Love your channel. I'm a bit embarrassed to ask this because I'll probably just show my ignorance but having been on the broads many times since I was a teenager (I'm 58 now) but not for about 10 years now. I don't recall ever having to go under Ludham bridge in order to get from Stalham to the south. Am I misremembering?
yes you are misremembering, you would have to go under Ludham bridge to go south
Yes, unfortunately to get out of the river Ant you have pass under Ludham bridge. Thanks for watching.
Lovely calming video with some beautiful drone shots and editing, thank you.
Thanks for the nice comment and for watching.
The only trouble is most holidaymakers wont wait at Stracey arms or berny arms for correct tide before crossing Breydon. You also could have mentioned the Height posts at the bridges
You are quite right. Which is fine if that's what they choose to do. For those that would like a nice easy crossing then follow what it tells you in the book (which is what this video is trying to show) and you shouldn't even have to worry to much about height boards as there will be plenty of height at those tides. Having said that, always check the boards. Thanks for the comment and for watching.
@@boatermike Holidymakers wont wait most of the time, say low tide is 1pm they wont wait until 6/7 pm to go thru Yarmouth and thats why height boards are important for hirers
New to the channel and finding it most interesting! Would a vlog of the boat you have in a bit of detail, engine, sleeping arrangements etc and how easy it is to maintain and service etc with some rough costs? Looking at maybe getting something similar and would be interesting to know the costs involved with marina etc too 👍🏻
Hi Mathew. Yes, a more detailed boat tour and review is on the list along with the costs involved. As ever, thanks for the great comment and for watching in the first place of course.
Great video, local lad born and bred, live on Womack Water, been on and off boats all my life. Ive done Breydon a couple of times. Your advice is well sound, can be scary especially in fog or low visibility. The tidal flow pinches towards Vauxhall bridge and it can be scary
Hi Antony. Thanks for the great comment. Love Womack water but don't get to go very often.
Cheers appreciate your tips great vids keep up the good work
Thanks for the great comment, and for watching of course.
we just come back from doing broads for our first time covered all North all ready booked for 2025 and Breydon is on our plans just out of interest what height is your boat cheers for the vid
Hi Gary. My boat is 8'8" and when I go through at low water I have at least 2' clearance. Try and stick to slack water though (one hour after low water) as the tides and eddies will have stopped by then. Tidal flow through Great Yarmouth can be scary for the the uninitiated (and seasoned sailors as well).
i cross it quite often but at the opening as u go on from yarmouth can be a fight with the current if u catch it at the wrong time
i own a 44 foot 8ft air draft the lady lou and its a pain getting the tides right to get under both bridges
Hi Harvey. My boat is 8'8" and I go through at low water (not slack). I have around 2' clearance but the price you pay is strong currents and eddies. Slack water is one hour after low and all the tide and eddies have pretty much gone (mostly) but the water level can come up quite a bit in that hour though.
@@boatermike would you reccomed going through at slack or low tide i suppose slack so your no fighting the current trying to push you into them poles
@@harveyhellewell5134 Yes, slack every time. Unless you have height constraints like I do and need the maximum clearance. At low water, which is only an hour before slack you will be surprised how fast the current flows out of Great Yarmouth.
Great Video Thought for taking the time to do it. We are on the broads 1st week in Aug and plan on taking this route. Was i bit apprehensive about traversing breydon, but this bid has made it look easy😅
The secret (not really a secret) is getting there at or around slack water. Then there will be very little, if any, tidal ebbs or flows to worry about. Go through mid tide and it can be a very different place. Don't do that. :-) Get your time right and you'll enjoy it. Thanks for watching and for the comment.
Thanks for the video Mike, I'll be going across end of September 😬 What make of boat do you have?
Thanks Mike. The boat is a Birchwood. Thanks for watching and for the comment.
Good video sir, do you know the location of the markers for the depth/ height that you need to know to cross under the bridges as im on a 35ft, 7ft air draft in August...?
@chrisford3212 Thanks for the nice comment. There are two or three height boards along the stretch either side but with a 7 foot air draft you will have no problems getting under either bridge at slack water.
Thankyou Mike great video and advice, are traveling from Aus and doing this route January 25 and looking forward to the Broads.
Coo, you must be lucky with the tides during the week you have in January. We often find that the times of low water through Great Yarmouth during winter aren’t always helpful, even though we love going south. Be aware that during the last winter we had more episodes where wind conditions in the North Sea had a ‘locking’ effect on the rivers, causing raised water levels, which also caused problems with getting under the Yarmouth bridges. Hopefully none of that will happen when you have your holiday. There’s a web app called ‘Project Troll’ which tracks the height under the lowest Great Yarmouth bridges which you might find helpful.
Good info. That's what this channel is all about.
Well if your hiring a boat, most tend to be of lower air draught so you should be fine anyway around slack water. Thanks for watching and for the great comment. Let us know what boat you have and we'll give you a wave if we're about.
Great advice. So many people have problems with that crossing .
:-)
You were lucky with your boat that time :-o
@@boatermikewow! Definitely, something I will never forget !💯 😮
That is the best video of crossing Breydon I have seen. Thank you so much. We did the northern broads this year our first time but was too nervous to go further than the Windmill cate. Going back next April - my son wants to do the crossing (he drives the boat) so have sent him your video. Where did you stop on the Yare before the return crossing?
Hi. This is exactly what the video was intended to do. The two bases for crossing over are the Windmill cafe on the northern side (as in the video) and The old Berney arms on the southern tip of Breydon. Although you can start from where ever you like, just work the travel times out to get you to Gt Yarmouth at slack. Thanks for watching and for the great comment.
Did you do much travelling about on the southern side?
Hi. All over except Beccles. Saving the for next time.
Great blog mike cant wait to be back up in September for our 20th trip on the broads..
Hi. Don't blame you. Thanks for the comment and for watching.

Great to see you both up at Broadsedge, Mike. That impeller was a mare - thank God you cleared that up! We are back in the water and next to you, hopefully, in 10 days or so (after 5 months indoors, but the results are pretty bloody great!) Sailing to Norwich on 7th May for a week - catch up soon Mate. All the best from Tosha👍🥂
That's fantastic news Max. I bet Tosha looks amazing. Looking forward to seeing our neighbours again. Empty spot next door is not quite the same. :-)
So useful re bowline thank you
Glad you'll find it helpful. Thanks for the comment and for watching.
Is broadsedge a decent marina? Looking into moving my boat over to the broads from the great Ouse at some point
Hi Shane. Broadsedge is a lovely marina. The grounds are really nice. The toilet and shower blocks are only a few years old and are probably the best I've seen in a marina, certainly on the broads anyway and the staff are friendly and very accommodating. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching.
I use to work at Birchwood boats in the 70s fitting out 33 footers, Sadly Birchwood is no more.
Your obviously new to boating, who are you trying to kid.
Thanks for the comment and thanks for still watching.
And you wake up in the morning and the wind has changed which is normal on a broad.
It sure can. Thanks for watching.
I've been boating 50yrs Mike, that is not the correct spring line.
Hi Dennis. It's not meant to be all technically correct. It's to give newcomers and first time hirers something to use if they find the tide is pushing their boats around. Thanks for watching.
I love the drone footage.
Thanks and thanks for watching ;-)
