    I'm old AF, and was around for the original WH40K Rogue Trader release. One day whilst mooching around the city center of Manchester, I came across a hobby shop that had mispriced the the rhino and land raider kits for waaaaaaay cheaper than they should have been. I borrowed all my friends pocket money and bought 6 rhinos and 4 land raiders for the same price as as one box of land raiders at the time. I was so nervouse at the till in case the staff realised there was a mistake. Thank the maker such things were possible back then. Best day of my young hobby life.

    The weapons on that deodorant hover tank came from a Zoid, which were wind up model kit toys that were robot animals and insects. There's a video here on youtube where someone attempted to recreate the deodorant tank using modern Zoids parts, but due upscaling on the Zoids, they had to use a larger, similarly shaped bottle.
    This was an informative video, thanks for putting it up.

    One of the things I love about 3D printing is that there are plenty of artists out there who have made STLs based off the original rhino not only that but they've also made conversion kits for some of those interesting kit bashes and conversions you saw in magazines.

    7:34 - Back in the early 1990s, I built a Rhino for my Imperial Guard, and it's painted up specifically as an ambulance; it's camouflaged, but it's got the huge white panels and red crosses and everything. And I always used it as a mission-based vehicle, for special scenarios. 😆

      Wow man, that's an adventure! We used to pedal, maybe 12 miles round trip to our hobby shops, but that was mid 70's. We were after plastic WWII airplanes and tank kits. By the time 40k was being released, I was out of the Air Force and back at model building and gaming.

    I have three Rhinos and two Predators of the original "Mk I" variety, none of the later iterations. (also two of the first Land Raiders). I`ve been playing since Rogue Trader era and see no reason to "upgrade" my vehicle park. Appreciate your content, thank you! B

    A tenner for THREE Rhinos? Absolute madness. When I first got into 40k I'm pretty sure they went for between £15 and £20 for just one

    • @peterclarke7240
      @peterclarke7240 Рік тому +3

      Yep. This was the glory days of 1st edn. Plastic was seen as somehow inferior or less desirable than the old white lead models, so plastic kits cost a LOT less- you could pick up boxes of Orks, Squats or Guards for about a tenner for 36 models, or 30 space marines.
      Even with inflation, that's absurd. £10 in 1988 is still only £27 today.
      Imagine being able to get 36 GW infantry models for £27 today. It's why I've gravitated to Wargames Atlantic's miniatures, because they make interesting Guard proxies and I don't feel like I'm being bent over and violently shafted. 😂

      @Peter Clarke recently I painted some Nurgle Space Marines I had lying about, and last year I painted some Lizardmen skinks. I would have been 11/12 at the time and bought them with pocket money, must have been between £5 and £10 a box. And my lead Nurgle Champion blister pack cost me £5, I remember that well! For a character model!! Great time to be playing the game.
      I also have a lead Chaos Lord from around the same time, but in my infinite wisdom I "kitbashed" it with a Catachan Jungle Fighter head and Glamdring off a spare Gandalf model I had. Couldn't quite tell you the logic behind that tbh, but I still have the mini!

    The muted colors and historic camo patterns on most of the early rhinos are quite different from the bright chapter colors that are now standard on vehicles. I have a number of the original rhinos I picked up when they were cheap - It’s rare to see one with all 4 original curved exhaust pipe tips still intact!

    I've got three of these sitting in a box, should really pull those out and fix them up. Guy who gave them to me paid $30 US for the set back in '89. One of them was battle damaged with the intent to be used as terrain, but I think I can fix it up with a bit of love.

    The set of three Rhinos was one of the first 40k sets I got. Now I have quite a few of them as well as some of the other vehicles based on the same hull. The Land Raider model that was shown in the Rogue Trader rulebook was very different to the eventual kit that included two vehicles for about £13.

    Still got my 3 rhinos from the original box finished in three colour camo,they go in my 150 plus squat rogue tradder army with landraider and predator from them,the beaky marines I used as crew in a plaster of Paris hovercraft that was made as well as an eldar falon that I got from games day 88 I think,wish I'd bought some of the armourfast models that were for sale as well.

    Rogue Trader had a wonderfully confusing statline for vehicles. For infanty "W" meant wounds. "D" might be shorthand for weapon Damage. On a vehicle, "W" meant weapon capacity and "D" also meant damage, but in this case it means Wounds not Damage. I cannot fathom why Priestley did this.

    I didn't have a marine army until just before the mkII was released and that was a chaos army at that. I foolishly bought a couple of the new ones and and planned to buy a mk1 to represent chaos not having new design but the crossover period where the old stock was available passed and I never managed to get one.

    i bought a rhino during 3rd edition in maybe 2002. the instruction sheet at 3:14 is the exact one in the box. seeing how it is an older instruction sheet, maybe they put it in there for the sake of finishing off any extra old printed instructions they had left over

      Don't forget you got 3 rhinos for your £9.99 :) I might be misremembering but I think Landraiders came as a set of 2 for about £6.

    • @peterclarke7240
      @peterclarke7240 Рік тому +1

      Nope, you're dead right. £6 for two landraiders. Absolutely mental when you consider what GW have done to their prices since then.
      Obviously the casts and materials are better and more "realistic," but I do miss the glory days of 1st edn, when £50 could set you up with a fairly impressive 1500pt army.
      I used to run a guard army that consisted of 3 boxes of 36 guards: 108 infantry for £30. Utter madness. I had a 40 tactical platoon, a support platoon of 20, a command squad and a frankly ridiculous 40 man assault platoon with jetpacks and twin plasma pistols. £30 for all the carnage you could wish for!

    Adjusted for Inflation this Kit would cost 34.31GBP. 3 Rhinos today cost 97,5GBP, so roughly 3 times of what they are worth, and they are one of the more fairly priced Kits GW offers. So we know GW could sell us a Rhino for about 15 GBP a pop (adjusted for higher ressource prices) and still would turn a profit, the other 17GBP probably go directly into the pockets of rich investors. Welcome to 2023 wage slave, now shut up and get back to work!
