I will be the first to admit that the current sculpts sold as minis by GW are arguably the best they've ever done, but there is something about the old 80s/90s stuff that has been lost over time, and that is character. They just ooze so much character that the modern stuff is almost sterile in comparison. Maybe im just too old and nostalgic
The new sculpts are just TOO perfect. Whereas the traditional sculpts of the 80s, 90s, and early 00s still have that imperfect hand sculpted charm to them. The technical proficiency and technology of today is phenomenal, but it can produce some sterile looking models.
No I agree, not only are the new sculpts often excessively detailed with fiddly bits of very limited value to the model and then everything ends up near perfect if not entirely perfect in symmetry and repeating shape across models - which just makes them less 'real'. Then there is the subject matter - some time in the 2000's maybe into 2010's all the whimsy and fun details go away in the quest for every more dull, repetitive legions. No halfling hotpot etc.
@@foldionepapyrus3441 The keys on the new Bretonnian duke come to mind. Nearly bent mine irreparably when I was putting together the damn Pegasus. I prefer 90s-80s sculpts because they have a few details here and there, but are a dream to paint once you get going.
Fun Fact: The Warp Spiders are the oldest (Both for the Eldar and Wh40k as a whole) that is still sold today (albeit in the finecast version mentioned)
They're perfect for it. Especially given that Colonel Schaeffer worked with the Inquisition, so they could easily have been made Imperial Agents available to work with any Imperial force (and, y'know, sell more minis). Shame that's probably not on the cards though.
@@Del_S old Games Workshop would have had articles on how to integrate them into Kill Team. Going back through old Citadel Journal and White Dwarf magazines it’s remarkable how soulless GW now is and how little they encourage creativity from the hobby.

Because the halfling hotpot got a made-to-order a few years ago I'm almost certain it'll be included in the Empire Arcane Journal. War wagon would also be very cool. There's a couple of the WH Quest characters I don't own models for. I'd love to get the wardancer and witch hunter to complete my collection. I have the cards, just not the minis.

Bringing back Inquisitor as a single purchase set-box game might not make Space Hulk money, but I think it would survive slightly longer than Imperialis, and probably show up actually being played in game stores more often.
This video brought joy to my heart. I never knew that eagle rider was a conversion. I would sneakily stare at the pure horror of the plague tower miniature, transfixed between the creeping feeling of evil and the mind cracking feeling of a world of secrets unlocking before me. One of the greats. Had I ever brought one home I would have been guaranteed a session with an exorcist.
The Slaanesh champion is a Jez Goodwin sculpt. I think they'll re-release a number of his chaos champions as made to order. They're iconic, nostalgic, still look good with more modern minis and are still in demand. I can't think of any other chaos minis that are better bets for re-release. Also: LE1 Motley Maniac the Death Jester. Also: Speciality Set 2: Dwarf Kings Court - Corbit Shortstuff, Gnome Jester (a Two Ronnies reference no doubt)...
That was super cool they brought that mini back. I have been loving the trips down memory lane that their MTO has given. I picked up a copy plus some of the other foot knights…most packs even came with 1992 plastic shields in addition to the metal ones. Hope they do bring the elf ranger when high elves come along
Man, I never quite appreciated how tall the Plague Tower actually was. Looks like it got right up there with the Warlord titan in some of those shots, so a modern, 40k scale one would have to be absolutely enormous.
They should re-release all of the old chaos champions; but I'd never be able to afford them since they're selling stuff on the made to order higher than the gouger prices on Ebay for the originals.
That two headed lord of change was an absolute masterpiece. Most of the choices are, but the lord of change was one of the first minis i ever got as a child. mmmm the nostalgia....
the orc warlord and orc shaman from warhammer quest lair of the orc lord have a proud place in my army. And i love all the other metal models produced for this game

Corbitt Shortstuff, wasn't it? Now that's going back to an age of myth, when your bismuth-rich miniatures looked like they'd been belched from the heart of an eldritch volcano.

I certainly hope we see all of the fantasy ones. Most of my Mordheim minis, including the knight, have made their way on to 25mm square bases and into a couple of free company units as they are too nice not to field.

I just love the old 80s and 90s models, maybe because that's when I started. The new ones while more detailed, are more like small painted statues meant for display than play. I think the new Aelves sculpts suffer the most from this, so many small fragile parts that I can barely move them on a shelf without them breaking.
I still field a good number of minis from that time. When minis didn't have a 400% markup, no fomo, each codex had new material and art, and WD wasn't just a 15 page ad book.
