When my daughter and granddaughter were wearing holes in socks, I read I should make them smaller, snugger so they wouldn't move around in their shoes. It seems to be working without changing yarns -- I generally buy 75% superwash merino, 25% nylon. "Experts" have told me to tighten my gauge as well, but so far I' haven't done that. I like a 2.5mm needle for socks.

So true, gauge makes a big difference as well! Thanks for sharing!

Have you considered changing brands instead? I found that regia, opal and wys are like kevlar whereas drops fabel and cygnet show wear very quickly

@@aliciacb8284747274 I almost always use Regia.

Are you in "Nordeast?" Knit & Bolt has a great selection of Regia and my favorite in their line: Perfect.

Wow. excellent tips Carol. I am finding I am a tight knitter. I love merino wool and since I am now starting to knit socks, I am finding knitting with a real wool content portion is much easier on my hands and back as I have only really knit with acrylic for scarves, caps and fingerless gloves. Thanks for your tips and Am enjoying Kendra’s tips too!

My new endeavor in life is going to be knitting socks for me and my loved ones. I am just learning to knit. Socks look daunting but I intend to master it. I can't say I know what sort of yarn to use after watching this video but I do think I want a wool blend if they're not itchy. I'm way ahead of myself here but all info is good. I like the fish lip heels on your socks. I will have to try that when I finally get the nerve, skill and understanding to knit a pair of socks. I have learned from crocheting booties that when you make a pair of something, they need to match!! lol. I'm also learning to make espadrilles and I couldn't help but wonder why you don't sew some soles to those worn socks and make some nice house slippers out of them. Something to consider.
This has been an informative & helpful video. Thank you.

Good luck with your socks!! Wool blend is definitely the way to go, imo. Sewing a sole would work. I don’t always wear socks around the house but really love them to keep my toes warm in my winter boots!!

I have been knitting socks for 20+ years . I love 6ply or a heavier wool worsted weight. 75%real wool. Opal brand and comfort sock yarn is my favourite. The real wool is expensive but worth it . Collect left overs and make scrappy socks . My 6 ply socks last 10 years.

Wow, nice Sabine. Okay, 6 ply...

The first time someone mentioned sock knitting to me I thought it was a colossal waste of time, but a friend assured me that it would take me to another level of knitting addiction. Wow, was she right. My first pair was on double pointed and they fit okay. Then I went to 2 circulars and liked that even more. My friend was knitting hers 2 at a time on 2 circulars and that was it for me. I am sooooo addicted to making socks that there is always a pair on my needles. It took me quite a while to get to 2aat, but for me there is no other way.
I want to wish you the best in learning sock knitting. Don't give up. Stay with it because the end result is so satisfying!!!

Wow, Kendra, love the opening to this video! The spinning so cool, and your dying process, so neat, loved your little girl? Hand on the yarn, so adorable! That is so nice that your Dad made the sock blockers! A band saw? Really nice! And your Mom knitting you a pair and handed down her gift for knitting to you! I have a grown daughter who loves painting but not knitting or sewing like myself 😜 but I love painting too, just am addicted to knitting now:) I am subscribing and one of these days I would like to knit sweaters, would love to dye one of these days, also would love to spin too.. thanks again, you are so smart! Thanks for sharing! Mary 🤗💗🤗🧣🧦🧦🧦

Thanks for your comment Mary! Yes the sock blockers were made on a band saw. And I am so lucky to have been taught all sorts of crafts growing up 😊😊

I love your socks. I just recently picked my needles up again and have embarked on my sock mission. I crochet a lot of the time, but the socks kept calling my name. My mission is to replace all my store-bought socks with homemade ones. Thanks for showing the different types of yarn blends. Very helpful. 👍.

Good luck with your mission! I should really do an update since most of these have a ton more wear now and I’ve added more!

Well, I already had Ravelry opened so I checked on most of the yarns you mentioned. Lion Brand Sock Ease is 75/25 wool and nylon, Red Heart Sock Yarn with Aloe is 70/30, Plain red heart sock yarn is 73/27. I haven't seen anyone else with that division! Bernat Berella Sock/Fingering yarn is 60% acrylic and 40 nylon. All the Kroy sock yarns I saw listed were 75/25. I have seen some cotton wool sock mixes but haven't tried them yet. I know that Rebecca from Chem Knits started dying with sock ease. She is about ready to start using acid dyes. She has done all sorts of food coloring, wine, orange soda, Easter egg tablets, etc.
I know that you can buy the reinforcing nylon fiber by itself but you end up knitting it all the way around your foot. EZ addressed this in one of her books. She designed socks with a replaceable bottom of the foot. I think she called them moccasin socks? I found several little moth holes in the ribbing of my socks this year. I have no idea how to fix that. I knit about a 7 inch leg in all rib since I absolutely hate for my shins to get cold.
Just found some of those square needles in my haul from Marketplace on FaceBook.! Kollage Yarns circular needle - size 7 and 24 inches long. I am knitting mitts for myself so I am thrilled to try them out. So far so good. I know that when they get to be a smaller size people have not enjoyed trying to move their stitches onto the square part. Keep knitting! We are having a warm break from fierce cold - last night was my first night sleeping without my heavy duty wool socks.

Thank you for all the info on fibre content! The moccasin socks sound interesting, I'll have to look into it. Good luck with the new needles, sounds like fun!

Thank you! Yes, I definitely need some tips on needles so absolutely I'll be happy to look that up to view. :) I never even knew till now that special sock needles existed! I am getting back into knitting for the first time in about 15 years and discovering brand new territory! UA-cam has opened up this whole, new world that didn't exist back when I was a very young girl just learning to knit and crochet.

well done . I would use reinforcements on heels and toes . I read people's socks last yrs and yrs . but maybe your shoes are slippery in the sole or are a little big ? I am afraid to wear my handknit socks very much cuz they do take such a long time to make and I wonder if I dont deserve them or something ? u know ? they are soo luxurious . I hate store bought socks not being wool and not fitting right so I need to get on with knitting myself sox and more sox. yarnhoarder amber was kntting 32 pairs ea for her family wow. now she has a knitting machine for the most part of them . nice . God bless

That is an amazing amount of socks! Yes, as much as I love looking at them I make them to wear so feel more sad if the work is not used. I have more in rotation this year and that seems to be helping too.

You should frog the worn out socks and use yarn for cuffs heels toes.

I wouldn't be concerned about the staining on the bottom. I think that comes from the inside of the boots and shoes we wear. It's not as colorfast as your own dye work!

Buy down breed wool- naturally felt resistant and machine washable, also good for environment. I love Southdown & horned Dorset & Tuni. Don’t need nylon. Also try to get long staple that will cover for 4 stitches, they last much much longer.

That’s great advice, I’m really interested in learning more about types of wool and their uses.
